‘Batman Forever’ and ‘Batman Begins’ share an anniversary week — and a surprising Oscar connection
Image
Holy double anniversary, Batman! Two Dark Knight features are celebrating milestone dates this week, as 1995’s Batman Forever hits the big 3-0, while 2005’s Batman Begins turns one year shy of legal drinking age.

At first glance, it’s tough to see what thses two very different Bat-movies might have in common apart from their summertime release dates and, of course, that masked vigilante with a lot of wonderful toys. But zoom out for a minute and the riddle of how the films connect becomes less difficult to solve.

For starters, each movie famously placed a new actor under the cowl. Val Kilmer proved that Michael Keaton wouldn’t be Batman forever, while Christian Bale provided the character with a new beginning after George Clooney botched his big Bat moment.

Both films are also odd-numbered entries designed to undo the real and/or perceived errors of their even-numbered predecessors. Joel Schumacher...

The Worst Video Game Of All Time Brought A Beloved Superhero To A New Low
Image
The 1990s really was one of the best times for kids' animation, especially when it came to superheroes. From "X-Men: The Animated Series" and "Spider-Man: The Animated Series" on the Marvel side to "Batman: The Animated Series" on the DC side, kids were spoiled for choice when it came to quality animated superhero programming. Part of what bound these shows together was a mature sensibility that treated their young audiences as if they were not just able to understand more adult storylines and themes but actually wanted those things in their shows (even if toy sales did dictate the first season of "Spider-Man: The Animated Series").

Naturally, after "Batman: The Animated Series" proved to be the definitive depiction of the Dark Knight for an entire generation, Warner Bros. was keen to repeat that success. So, the company quickly put "Superman: The Animated Series" into production, with "Batman: Tas" co-creator Bruce Timm overseeing the show.

Greg Cannom, the masterful prosthetics and makeup specialist who received Oscars for his work on Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Mrs. Doubtfire, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Vice, has died. He was 73.

Cannom worked often with makeup maestro Rick Baker early in his career, and Baker on Friday reported his death in an Instagram post. “His work will be remembered long after his passing,” he wrote. No details were immediately available.

In March 2023, a GoFundMe page was set up to help Cannom with expenses as he battled diabetes and a staph infection that led to one of his legs being amputated below his knee.

In addition to his four wins, Cannom received six other Oscar makeup noms: for Hook (1991), Hoffa (1992), Roommates (1995), Titanic (1997), Bicentennial Man (1999) and A Beautiful Mind (2001).

Al Pacino movies: 25 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Al Pacino is the Oscar-winning actor who has starred in dozens of classics throughout his nearly 50 year career, from his star-making breakthrough in "The Godfather" (1972) to his late-career triumph in "The Irishman" (2019). Tour through our photo gallery of Pacino's 25 greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Though an acting legend, it took Pacino 20 years and eight nominations to finally cash in his Oscar I.O.U. for "Scent of a Woman". Prior to that he competed for "The Godfather", "Serpico", "The Godfather, Part II", "Dog Day Afternoon", "... And Justice for All", "Dick Tracy" and "Glengarry Glen Ross", but he didn't win any of those bids.

Surprisingly, his 1992 noms for "Scent of a Woman" and "Glengarry Glen Ross" were followed by a long Academy drought, despite additional critically acclaimed performances in "Heat" (1995), "Donnie Brasco" (1997), "The Insider" (1999) and "Insomnia" (2002). During that time, he became a TV favorite with Emmy-winning turns in "Angels in America...

Madonna Regrets Passing On An Iconic Batman Role
Image
During her heyday as one of the biggest musical icons in the world, Madonna seemingly had it all. In the 21st century, Madonna has become something of a legacy act, with bigger names like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift taking over as female pop icons. In the mid-1980s and early 1990s, however, Madonna had the world gripped by her every move. And like Beyoncé and Swift, she confidently jumped from one medium to another, appearing in films like "Desperately Seeking Susan" and "Dick Tracy," the latter of which paired her opposite Hollywood legend Warren Beatty as a riff on the classic femme fatale archetype in Beatty's comic strip adaptation.

That 1990 film from Touchstone Pictures is worth keeping in mind for this story for a couple of reasons. While Dick Tracy was not a character or intellectual property that had been captivating audiences in the previous decade, it was chosen as...

Al Pacino Names 'Dick Tracy' and 'Scarface' as His Favorite Movies
Image
Oscar-winner Al Pacino (Scent of a Woman) has been nominated a total of nine times for Academy Awards over the course of his illustrious career. However, the beloved thespian recently revealed that he had the "most fun" acting in Dick Tracy, while his "favorite" role was playing the foul-mouthed Tony Montana in Scarface (1983) — despite the accolades he has garnered for his award-winning performances over the years. The Hollywood heavyweight made his selections while attending a special 50th anniversary screening of his must-see film, Dog Day Afternoon (1975) in Santa Monica, California. Pacino said during the film's Q&a at the American Cinematheque Aero Theatre afterward:

"Straight out, I just say nothing touches Scarface. And really the reason I feel that way is, I remember passing a movie house in Los Angeles, the Tiffany (West Hollywood) — it’s not there anymore — where they played all the old films, and they played Scarface...

Al Pacino's Iconic Gun Scene In 1983 Cult Classic Gets Some Compliments From Expert Despite Lack Of Realism
Image
There are few actors more recognizable and respected in Hollywood than Al Pacino, who has been a staple of the big screen since the 1970s. Pacino first became a star in 1972 with the release of Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, a crime epic that is now widely regarded as one of the best movies of all time. Pacino would reprise his role as Michael Corleone for the acclaimed The Godfather Part II (1974) and a 1990 threequel, but he also branched beyond this franchise, playing memorable characters in a range of films.

In 1975, for example, Pacino starred in Dog Day Afternoon, and the following decades would see him star in projects like Dick Tracy (1990), Glengarry Glen Ross (1992), Heat (1995), and Once Upon A Time... in Hollywood (2019). One of Pacino's most iconic roles, however, came in 1983 in the form of a collaboration with director Brian De Palma, with the pair ultimately making what...

Kevin Costner might be well known for his role as John Dutton in the Yellowstone universe. ‘Alter Ego’ Turns the Making of a Superhero Movie Into a Thriller
Image
A superhero movie shelved for tax reasons. A disgraced director attempting a comeback. And a shady company rebooting a classic comic book hero. It all sounds very Hollywood 2024 — and that was one of the goals for Alex Segura with his new novel, Alter Ego.

Alter Ego, which arrived Dec. 3 from publisher Flatiron, serves as what he calls a “standalone” sequel to his well-received 2022 novel Secret Identity, which focused on comic book culture of the 1970s and chronicled the creation of a hero known as The Lynx. The new novel takes place decades later in the same world as Secret Identity, but can be read on its own.

Alter Ego centers on Annie Bustamante, an acclaimed comic book artist and filmmaker who is sent into a tailspin when her new superhero movie gets shelved for tax reasons. She gets a lifeline when a mysterious company hires her to help reboot The...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Serpico
Image
Over 50 years ago, Sidney Lumet released "Serpico," a powerful indictment of NYPD police corruption that was based on a true story. Decades later, New York's "boys in blue" are still being consistently called out for corruption, but at the time of the film's release in 1973, "Serpico" felt like it might just cause a sea change in the way America — or at least Hollywood — saw its law enforcement systems. "Sidney Lumet's 'Serpico,' the first in what threatens to be an avalanche of movies about policemen, picks up the old cop film and brings it with lights flashing and sirens blaring into the middle of the Watergate era," Vincent Canby wrote in his original review for the New York Times.

"Serpico" may not have ended up changing the world, but the movie based on the book of the same name by Peter Maas was a box office and critical hit,...

Madonna's Biopic Could Become a TV Series
Image
You would think due to the longevity and incredible success of Madonna's legendary music career, it would be easy to get a movie about her life off the ground. When one hears the news that Britney Spears has a biopic in the works with a hot director attached to it, it seems like a head-scratcher that the Queen of Pop doesn't have one moving full speed ahead. As it turns out, it hasn't been for a lack of trying Madonna has revealed that the delays are due to producers and agents who want to "downsize" the scope of the project.

Madonna took to Instagram to tell her 19.8 million followers what's going on with her biopic after spending four years developing it, with an initial draft of the screenplay being handled by Oscar-winner Diablo Cody and further revisions made by Erin Cressida Wilson. Madonna halted development on the film, which...

Madonna teases on a social media post that her biopic is once again being rewritten
Image
Music icon Madonna is no stranger to the film side of entertainment. The singer would crossover into movies on many occasions, including starring in a variety of projects like Body of Evidence, A League of Their Own and Dick Tracy. For a time, she would even be married to director Guy Ritchie, who she made a film with called Swept Away. In the past few years, Madonna had been reportedly developing a biopic about herself in which she would be in the rare position to both write and direct. Early last year, the project would not come together and she scrapped the project just ahead of her world tour.

Deadline is now reporting that the 80s pop icon teased on her Instagram that the project is once again in development. Madonna posted a slideshow that featured a series of pictures of her working on a typewriter and her table is littered with screenplay pages.

Why Star Trek's Colm Meaney Tried To Get Rid Of O'Brien's Irish Accent
Image
The character of Chief Miles O'Brien first appeared in the pilot episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Encounter at Farpoint". Throughout the show's first season, Chief O'Brien would appear mostly in the Enterprise's transporter room, tasked with beaming the Enterprise crew up and down from dangerous away missions. As the show progressed, O'Brien was allowed to speak up more and more. By the show's fourth season, O'Brien would marry his sweetheart Keiko (Rosalind Chao), become possessed by an alien criminal, and reveal long-lasting Ptsd. All told, O'Brien was in 52 episodes of "Next Generation" before becoming a regular cast member of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," affording him 160 additional episodes.

O'Brien was played by reliable Irish actor Colm Meany, star of John Houston's "The Dead," "Dick Tracy," and "The Commitments" (and its sequels). He was a hard worker, and during his 12-year stint on "Star Trek," appeared in 23 feature films.

‘Desperately Seeking Susan’ Director Remembers Madonna’s ‘Naughty Sense of Humor’
Image
With prominent supporting roles in classics like “A League of Their Own” and “Dick Tracy,” as well as the lead in the screen adaptation of the musical “Evita,” Madonna’s film career is well-established, but might never have happened without her star turn in the 1985 cult comedy “Desperately Seeking Susan.” A modern farce set in the scuzzy beauty of ‘80s New York City, the film follows a straight-laced housewife and a bohemian drifter who become intertwined in a criminal plot involving a pair of stolen earrings. While the film is led by actress Roseanna Arquette, it quickly became known as the “Madonna movie,” with her character’s fashion sense — which mirrored Madonna’s own — and her free-spirit energy coming to define the popular culture of the era.

“Everyone’s concern was to find the right actor for the role of Susan,” wrote the film’s director, Susan Seidelman, in her memoir,...

How Total Recall Created Sci-Fi Mutant Kuato Without An Ounce Of CGI
Image
Paul Verhoeven's 1990 film "Total Recall" takes place in the distant future of 2084. Mars has not only been colonized, but it has also fallen under the rule of an evil governor named Vilos Cohaagen (Ronny Cox). The planet is rich with a rare, valuable ore called turbinium, but mining it has caused widespread pollution and radiation. Many of the Martian citizens have mutated as a result, their bodies sprouting extra body parts or sporting unusual growths. In many cases, mutants are also mildly psychic. To combat Cohaagen's corruption, a Mutant Resistance has formed, led by the mysterious and difficult-to-find Kuato (Marshall Bell).

The protagonist of "Total Recall" is Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a former agent for Cohaagen who had his memory erased and his identity changed. It takes a long while for Quaid to understand what happened to him, but he eventually discovers that he has to combat Cohaagen and help the Mutant Resistance.

Image
Spoiler Alert: This story discusses plot elements from “Captain America: Brave New World,” which is scheduled to open in theaters on Feb. 14, 2025.

As the preceding warning suggests, it is customary for any story that reveals significant plot elements of an upcoming movie to include a spoiler alert. But what about a toy line?

On April 17, a Brazilian Instagram account dedicated to toy collections from fast food chains posted a video showcasing McDonald’s newest Mappy Meal toy line of mini plush characters from Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Brave New World.” It didn’t take very long for fans online to notice one of these toys was the Red Hulk, the rage monster alter ego of Thaddeus Ross, played in “Brave New World” by Harrison Ford.

For nearly a year, Marvel fans have wondered whether Red Hulk would show up in “Brave New World.” Attempts by Ford and star Anthony Mackie...

90s Sci-Fi TV Shows With Awful Reviews That Are Actually Worth Watching
Image
We live in a golden era of sci-fi on TV, where "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" come in multiple flavors, "Stranger Things" is an event every season, and the CW recently wrapped up an entire universe of DC Comics superheroes on the small screen. Fortunately for all sci-fi fans, this is a time where the people who make such shows grew up loving them, and critics who review them were raised on the concepts and get it. This is all a relatively new phenomenon.

As recently as the '90s, TV critics weren't necessarily big on high-concept sci-fi, and the people making these shows didn't always know what they were doing either. Even if they did, producers over their heads weren't necessarily making the best decisions either. Superheroes on TV were entirely different three decades ago, and the weekly format was just discovering the notion of season-long arcs. There were growing pains to be sure,...

“He dated all of Hollywood basically”: Madonna Had to Plead the Fifth After a Risky Question From Howard Stern About Dating Warren Beatty
Image
If one thinks of pop music and its influence in the world, it is difficult to look past an artist like Madonna. In many ways, the iconic singer was a pioneer in the genre and is associated with some of the most evergreen songs that have become cult classics over the years. In addition to her charismatic personality, Madonna has also had a colorful personal life when it comes to her various romances.

Madonna in her hit single Vogue

The Vogue crooner has been married to A-list Hollywood celebrities like Sean Penn and Guy Ritchie, and has also been involved in a short relationship with Warren Beatty with whom she co-starred with in Dick Tracy. While the pop star was pretty open and candid when talking about Beatty in The Howard Stern Show, she refrained from getting too personal when pushed to comment on her s*x life with the actor.

The Crow Review
Image
The Crow opens on Devil's Night, an evening of mischief and mayhem in Detroit, Michigan. The evening before Halloween, the Motor City is awash in iridescent orange light as cars and buildings are set ablaze. If not for the endless rain, there would be no respite from the fire. Alt-rocker Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) and his fiancé, Shelly Webster (Sofia Shinas), are going to get married tomorrow. That is, until they're both horrifically murdered at the hands of Paradise Lost-quoting criminal named T-Bird (David Patrick Kelly) and his merry band of sadistic killers.

One year later, it's Devil's Night again. The city is burning once more -- if it ever stopped. A crow visits Eric Draven's grave, resurrecting and imbuing him with otherworldly powers that can take others' pain and withstand gunshots. The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Bonnie And Clyde
Image
The real Bonnie and Clyde may have died in 1933, but the legend of the couple's crime spree lives on in the form of songs, stories, and one groundbreaking movie. Arthur Penn's "Bonnie and Clyde" took Hollywood by storm when it hit theaters in 1967, generating controversy for its on-screen violence and sensuality -- and kick-starting nationwide conversations about who deserves to be the subject of a movie. While film fans still talk about these topics today, the movie's brutal final shootout feels mild compared to modern blood-soaked movie scenes.

Still, "Bonnie and Clyde" is a fantastic film, thanks in large part to its great cast. Warren Beatty plays cocky Clyde Barrow to Faye Dunaway's initially innocent Bonnie Parker, while actors Michael J. Pollard, Gene Hackman, and Estelle Parsons round out the Barrow gang. A young Gene Wilder made his big screen debut as one of Clyde's hostages, while Denver...

Greta Gerwig (‘Barbie’) will be 1st to go 3-for-3 in directing Best Picture Oscar nominees
Image
As she strolls comfortably toward multiple Oscar nominations for “Barbie,” Greta Gerwig is on track to set several Academy Awards records tied to her age, gender and the movie’s financial success. In terms of more general achievements, perhaps the most impressive one in her reach is becoming the first filmmaker to have all of her initial three solo features contend for Best Picture. Over the past 95 years, many directors have had shots at earning that distinction and a few have come remarkably close, but none of their chances have been quite as strong as hers.

Since Gerwig did not produce her first two independently-directed films – “Lady Bird” (2017) and “Little Women” (2019) – and, per academy rules, cannot officially share in a “Barbie” Best Picture nomination due to her screen credit of “executive producer” (rather than the qualifying “producer” or “produced by”), she does not and will not soon have any bids...

Did Madonna actually put her tongue in Al Pacino’s ear?!
Image
Pop queen Madonna had once allegedly stuck her tongue inside Hollywood actor Al Pacino’s ear when they first met back in the 1970’s according to her former roommate Whitley Hill. The ‘Material Girl’ hitmaker detailed the incident in her biography ‘Madonna: A Rebel Life’, which hit the bookshelves on October 12. In the book, Hill shared that her dad, Ed Setrakian, had introduced the ‘Godfather’ star to Madonna at dinner in New York City sometime between 1978 and 1979.

After Setrakian drove everyone home, Pacino allegedly said: “That friend of your daughter’s stuck her tongue in my ear. When we were driving home, she leaned over and stuck her tongue in my ear!”

According to Whitley, the actor also told her father Ed that Madonna called “attention to her mouth.” At that time, the ‘Papa Don’t Preach’ singer allegedly chewed gum in a “slow, deliberate manner,” in front of the actor,...

Who has starred in the most Best Picture Oscar nominees? [Photos]

What a thrill it must be as an actor to be in a film that becomes a contender for the Academy Award for Best Picture. A few even develop such an impressive resume that they have seven, eight, nine, or more of these credits to their names. Who are the actors who have starred in the most number of Best Picture nominees?

Many of the performers on this list are not a surprise, with multi-Oscar-winners such as Meryl Streep, Robert De Niro, Cate Blanchett and Bette Davis making the cut. But there are also some fine character actors who appeared in hundreds of films over careers that spanned decades, including Henry Travers (Clarence the angel from “It’s a Wonderful Life) and Thomas Mitchell (Scarlett O’Hara’s dad from “Gone with the Wind”). Mitchell was such a sought-after actor, he appeared in five of the Best Picture nominees in 1940 and 1941. Two...

Bo Goldman, Oscar-Winning Cowriter of ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,’ Dies at 90
Bo Goldman
Veteran screenwriter Bo Goldman, who won Oscars for “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and Jonathan Demme’s “Melvin and Howard,” died Tuesday at the age of 90, his son-in-law, director Todd Field told The New York Times on Wednesday.

Goldman landed the job of adapting Ken Kesey’s book (along with Lawrence Hauben) after his script for “Shoot the Moon” impressed “Cuckoo’s Nest” director Miloš Forman.

Danny DeVito, who had a small role in “Cuckoo’s Nest,” told TheWrap, “Working with Bo was a dream. It was an honor knowing him.”

After winning a second Oscar for “Melvin and Howard,” he became one of the few screenwriters — along with Francis Ford Coppola and Billy Wilder — to take home Academy Awards for both original and adapted screenplay. He was nominated a third time for his script for Martin Brest’s “Scent of a Woman.”

During his long career, he also...

These Madonna Films Still Hold Up Today
Image
To say the least, she's so much more than a singer. She's an influential cultural icon whose name is synonymous with female empowerment, innovative style, and, most of all, fearless ambition.

In the 1970s and early '80s, outside the local independent music scene in NYC where she was a backup singer and dancer, she was otherwise unknown to the world. A 5’4 singer and dancer with boundless dreams named Madonna Louise Ciccone from Bay City, Michigan, was determined to establish herself nationally. In 1983, she began doing so with the success of her music hits "Holiday" and "Borderline."

By 1984 Ciccone’s career skyrocketed further through the stratosphere with the release of her second album and single, "Like a Virgin," which remains one of the top-selling singles of all time for one of the most famous mononym-identifying celebrities ever, Madonna.

It was in 1985, however, when the world was also introduced to Madonna’s on-screen acting talent,...
