Thomas Haden Church began his acting career as the lovable airplane mechanic Lowell Mather on the beloved ‘90s NBC sitcom Wings. As Phil on Netflix comedy Tires season two, he’s the one (gently) bossing the grease monkeys around, including his on-screen son Shane Gillis.
Church is happy to talk about being on both ends of the socket wrench, though really he’s at his happiest relaying the cattle count on his Texas ranch. It’s all good — I mostly wanted to talk about Tombstone (1993).
How aware of Tires season one were you?
Not at all. Valerie Mahaffey has sadly passed away at the age of 71 after a battle with cancer. She will be remembered for her work in Young Sheldon and Jack and Jill, and also for starring alongside Tim Allen in Jungle 2 Jungle. We send our condolences to Mahaffey’s friends and family during this difficult time.
It’s unclear how long she had been battling cancer. Mahaffey was born on June 16, 1953, in Sumatra, Indonesia. Hailing from an American family, her father was a petroleum worker, which led to their family moving around during her childhood. She spent many of her early years in Indonesia, Nigeria, and the U.K. It wasn’t until she was 16 that her family relocated to Austin, Texas, and she ultimately graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Fine Arts before beginning her Broadway and Hollywood careers.

The entertainment world lost a true treasure when Valerie Mahaffey passed away on May 30, 2025, just one day shy of her 72nd birthday. You probably know her as the delightfully neurotic Eve from Northern Exposure (which earned her an Emmy!) or maybe from her memorable turns in Desperate Housewives and Dead to Me.
But here’s the thing about Mahaffey – she was one of those rare character actresses who could completely transform a scene with just a raised eyebrow or perfectly timed line delivery.
Her career spanned over four decades, from soap operas to blockbuster films, and she had this incredible knack for making even the smallest roles unforgettable. While most of us remember her greatest hits, there are some pretty amazing stories about her life and career that might surprise you.

"Heeh! Heeh! Heeh!" With a wheezy laugh and goofy grins, "Revenge of the Nerds" took 1984 by storm. In a theatrical year dominated by Axel Foley, Indiana Jones, Gizmo, the Ghostbusters, and Mr. Miyagi, it was a raunchy college comedy for the older kids, promoting the triumph of the intelligent and the uncool over the strong and the sexy.
Beloved at the time, it has aged poorly in some respects, as it treats sorority girls as prizes to be won, and depicts some decidedly non-consensual intimate moments exploited and played for pranks. For the sequel, which helped launch Bradley Whitford's career, the nerds' hijinks were toned down to a PG-13, and two subsequent films, made for TV, had to deal with even stricter network censorship. There's still occasional talk of a reboot at some point though.

The Sopranos blew the doors off what TV could be. It set the standard for prestige drama, something that, in all honesty, has been quite hard to beat, or even match. Before The Sopranos, networks enjoyed their safety, comfort, and the tried and tested formula for success. Why fix what’s not broke? Things could have very well remained the same – a good ol’ mix of happy endings, clean-cut heroes, and nobody rocking the boat.
The medium would eventually get its breakout anti-hero, with a fair bit of agita. Tony Soprano kicked the door open for every great show that followed: Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Game of Thrones, all of it. The Peabody Awards took notice early, awarding its first two seasons back-to-back – an honor shared only by Northern Exposure and The West Wing.

Christine Elise has shared the screen with Chucky the killer doll several times over the decades, first appearing as the heroine Kyle in Child’s Play 2 back in 1990, then reprising the role for Cult of Chucky (the seventh film in the series) in 2017 and multiple episodes of the Chucky TV show, which ran for three seasons, from 2021 to 2024. JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera was able to catch up with Elise at the Ve Neill’s Vampire Weekend convention in California last month and talked with her about her experiences working with Chucky and interacting with the horror community – and you can find out what she had to say by checking out the interview video embedded above.

Mad Men star Christina Hendricks thinks audiences have “learned a little bit of manners” since the days she was playing Joan Holloway in the AMC smash.
Reflecting on a decade having passed since the end of Mad Men, Hendricks told Deadline society has improved for the better in terms of the way in which men in particular discuss female actors.
“I think people have learned a little bit of manners now and know you don’t ask about physicality and bodies straight up when you have never met them,” said Hendricks, who was six-times Emmy nominated for Mad Men. “It’s really none of their business. I think there has been a big change since then.”
Hendricks, who has spoken in the past about the difference in audience reaction to Mad Men’s male and female breakouts, noted that the show “was aesthetically accentuated, which was a thrill and a highlight,...

In the 1990s, Nickelodeon was home to some of the most inventive and boundary-pushing children's programming in television history. Shows like Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Rocko's Modern Life, Clarissa Explains It All, and Hey Arnold! didn't shy away from exploring complex emotions, surreal humor, or even darker themes, treating young audiences with a level of respect. But among the network’s standout programming, The Adventures of Pete & Pete remains one of the most bizarre, creative, and unexpectedly poignant series of the decade. With its dreamlike atmosphere, quirky small-town setting, and offbeat characters, the show was basically Twin Peaks for kids — offering an accessible surreal, magical realism-laced viewing experience that still holds up today.
Both Twin Peaks and Pete & Pete exist within towns that operate on their own strange internal logic, full of eccentric characters who often feel like they’ve wandered in from another dimension. While...

With the passing of David Lynch and the re-release (or re-re-re-re-release) of Twin Peaksin a new box set, now is a perfect time to revisit its 'sister show' of sorts, which has traditionally been hard to find. Twin Peaks aired on ABC in 1990 and 1991, while Northern Exposure aired its first two (of six) seasons on CBS during that time. The two shows weren't treated well by executives, and they hopped around, sometimes airing Monday nights, sometimes Thursdays, and eventually they were both in primetime on Saturday night. They share thematic similarities, settings, actors, dream logic, and surrealism, and one show even directly merged with the other.
Like Twin Peaks, Northern Exposure was about a city-slicker outsider called into a weird community in the Pacific Northwest in order to heal them. In the latter series, this is meant quite literally — Dr. Joel Fleischman is stuck in Cicely, Alaska, repaying his college...

Some shows get canceled. Life happens. Even the ones we love. Just look at the brilliance that was Northern Exposure, which has only recently been available via streaming. It was a quirky series that surprisingly never got made. It would be better if released now than it was in the 1990s.
But Santa Clarita Diet? It was a bit ahead of its time. Sort of. Zombie comedies work mostly when they are films instead of series. The show starred Drew Barrymore and she is great in nearly anything, and she was good in this Netflix show, too. But just because Barrymore has a cult following and the series had a cult following does not mean Netflix was going to keep it on.
Look, as great as Tom Waits is as a musician and artist, record companies are not going to pay him a higher amount than lesser artists like Nickelback to stay on their dime.

It’s been over a decade since Tom Selleck embodied the role of the New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan in the CBS crime drama Blue Bloods. However, the long-running show might not have existed today had it not been for the surprising twist of fate involving the hit HBO drama The Sopranos.

Dr. Phlox, as played by John Billingsley on "Star Trek: Enterprise," may be one of the best characters in the franchise. Phlox was on board the Enterprise as part of a species exchange program, and he was eager to serve among humans, tickled by their optimism and amused by their prudishness. He was a Denobulan, a species with its own set of medical ethics (the will of the patient supersedes an Earth doctor's pledge to first do no harm), leading to some principled discussions of right and wrong. His species also married into vast, complex polycules where each man takes three wives and each woman takes three husbands. When asked if that made things complicated on his homeworld, Phlox smiled impishly and replied, "Yes."
Phlox was always upbeat, however, and was eager to explain cultural differences to curious human seekers. Phlox also practiced weird, but scientifically proven, medical techniques, often...

Wilford Brimley's Yellowstone dedication, in the form of a title card honoring his death, confused many fans who wondered if the character actor appeared on the show. Yellowstone is Taylor Sheridan's wildly popular neo-Western series that follows the Dutton ranching family as they try to protect their land and legacy as it is attacked from all sides. With its modern-yet-timeless stories set against the backdrop of the American West, Yellowstone and its abundance of spinoffs have helped to put the genre back on the map for the first time in decades with a fresh take.

Directly after setting a new comedy series record for most simultaneous Emmy nominations (23), FX’s “The Bear” emerged from last weekend’s Creative Arts Awards with seven wins, constituting an event record for a non-sketch comedy program. Its reception of both possible guest acting trophies (for Jon Bernthal and Jamie Lee Curtis) is by no means unprecedented, but it will be the first show to ever enter the main primetime ceremony with the ability to accomplish a six-for-six acting sweep.
“The Bear’s” potential to make history by concurrently collecting all half dozen comedy performance prizes hinges on a mixed group of reigning champions and first-time nominees. Its male and female lead candidates are Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri, who respectively achieved lead and supporting wins for season one last winter. John Corbett recently appeared on the “Fly on the Wall” podcast (via Entertainment Weekly) and expressed regret over limiting his career in Hollywood to strictly being an actor. Corbett’s acting career spans hit television series such as “Northern Exposure” and “Sex and the City” and movies like the “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” franchise. However, all the money he’s made from acting hasn’t prevented him from feeling like he’s missed out on other creative roles in Hollywood.
“Look, I’m in the fourth quarter of the football game now, in life and in showbiz. It’s just a fact,” Corbett said. “So I can reveal now I picked the fucking wrong thing to do with my life.”
“Have you ever sat in a fucking waiting room of a doctor’s office for like an hour and been like, ‘What the fuck?'” Corbett added about his career regret.
