In the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Initiations", Chakotay (Robert Beltran) undertakes a personal mission on a shuttlecraft only to be attacked by a Kazon teenager named Kar (Aron Eisenberg), an adolescent out on his first mission. In the brief battle, Chakotay accidentally destroys Kar's ship, but takes the time to rescue him. Kar explains that the Kazon are an honor-bound species and that Chkotay, in rescuing him, robbed him of his ability to prove his worth to his elders. Kar is furious and embarrassed. Kar's superiors find Chakotay and explain that the only way to restore Kar's honor is for Chakotay to kill him or for Kar to kill Chakotay. The Starfleet officer and the Kazon go on the lam, trying to find a solution to their plight that doesn't involve murder.

Actress/writer/stand-up comedian Jenny Slate, whose credits include Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All at Once, the Marvel Comics adaptation Venom, and Saturday Night Live, has signed on to star in the horror film Mindful, which Deadline describes as being about “a possessed meditation app that begins to kill its followers.”
Perry Blackshear (They Look Like People) will be directing the film from a screenplay by Leslie Bohem, who got his start writing House III: The Horror Show and A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child. In the decades since, Bohem has worked on the likes of Nowhere to Run, Daylight, Dante’s Peak, The Darkest Hour, The Alamo, and the mini-series Taken. The story he has crafted for Mindful has the following synopsis: When her husband shockingly dies while meditating on the Mindful app, Angela (Slate), deeply suspicious of the new wellness craze, uncovers supernatural forces that have fused with the technology.

For over two decades, author Brian Keene has given fans stories filled with zombies (The Rising series), massive man-eating earthworms (the Earthworm Gods series), an occult detective (the Levi Stotzfus series), a well-meaning serial killer, and numerous other tales of horror, dark fantasy and crime fiction.

Despite lacking a cool older relative or friend to show me the ropes, my early exposure to the horror genre was fairly conventional. I started with the big slasher franchises then worked my way through other genre classics before seeking out increasingly obscure titles — a journey that continues to this day. After binging through Halloween, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street, I soon discovered Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead trilogy.
Well before the remake or Ash vs. Evil Dead, I distinctly recall reading about unofficial Evil Dead installments on web forums to sate my appetite while waiting for the franchise’s long-gestating fourth entry. There’s the La Casa series in Italy, wherein unrelated movies were marketed as Evil Dead sequels, and Japan’s Evil Dead Trap, whose similarities to Raimi’s work begin and end with the title. But the one movie that always eluded me was The Japanese Evil Dead.

With the worst ratings in years plaguing the show’s overnight figures and fans criticizing showrunner Chris Chibnall’s take on the series, the BBC’s Doctor Who is currently in a bad spot.
The long-running sci-fi program came back this year with Jodie Whittaker’s second run as the first female Doctor. But in spite of an overhaul in the show’s production values and many unexpected twists in the narrative, fans are not happy with how Chibnall is handling things. While some criticize this season for suddenly becoming too politically charged, many just don’t appreciate the new stories and their resolutions.
Suffice it to say, if this negative backlash continues to grow, Chibnall’s tenure as the executive producer will be short-lived. Though considering the fact that he doesn’t care about reviews, and Jodie already confirming she’ll return for another season, the BBC might decide to not intervene after all.

“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” actor Aron Eisenberg, who played Nog in the 1990s series, died Saturday. He was 50.
His character Nog, who appeared for all seven seasons, was a member of the alien race Ferengi, and joined Starfleet after a recommendation from Captain Sisko. Eisenberg returned for a guest spot on “Star Trek: Voyager” and appeared in the “Star Trek” fan film “Renegades.”
His widow Malissa Longo wrote on Facebook, “He was so driven to put the best he had into whatever work was put before him. He lived his life with such vigor and passion.”
Eisenberg, who was born with one kidney, had received two kidney transplants. The kidney trouble had stunted his growth, and he stood at 5 feet tall.
He had been married for nine months. “We didn’t officially announce that we had eloped on December 28th, 2018. We were hoping to have a big shindig in celebration of our nuptials,...

The cause of death was not revealed, but Eisenberg had received two kidney transplants, most recently in 2015. He was 50 years old.
“He was an intelligent, humble, funny, emphatic soul,” Eisenberg’s wife, Malíssa Longo, said in the post. “There will never be another light like Aron’s. The concept of “copying” has become demonized to the point of criticism in film these days, and for good reason. The concept of copying story points and aesthetics or visual flourishes from other films is cheating if there’s nothing else brought to the table. However, once in awhile, there’s actually a movie that comes along that isn’t exactly it’s own, isn’t exactly original, but has enough to create an entertaining movie. Drifter surprisingly fits right into that category. There are moments of the film that call back to so many films including, Mad Max, The Rover, the works of David Lynch and a variety of cannibal movies, but the overall stellar direction, editing, and acting make Drifter a film that continues to surprise and shock.
What allows this film to better occupy the range in which it’s inherent unoriginality doesn...

Hate the idea of a new Ghostbusters film? That's fair enough. Attacking another human being? It might be time to draw the line...
I believe it to be Empire magazine that works on an editorial policy of treating the approach to every movie as if it’s Christmas Eve. That, until you’ve seen the final cut of something, go in with optimism, and a wish for something to be good, be it Big Momma’s House 3 or Captain America: Civil War. Hate must be saved until you've seen the final cut of a film.
I like that ethos a lot. I think in an era when great films can have terrible trailers, and terrible films can have great trailers, that reserving judgement for a movie until the whole thing has been seen is something to cherish.
So then: you don’t need me to tell...

This past year has been one of the most memorable of my life for many reasons, one of them being the abundance of amazing entertainment in the horror genre. Thanks to great movies, books, podcasts, performances and more, I'll always look back at 2015 fondly.
Archie vs. Predator: Riverdale is one of the last places in comic books that you’d expect to find a character’s decapitated head stuffed into a vending machine, but anything goes in Dark Horse’s four-part Archie vs. Predator series. Author Alex De Campi expertly intertwines humor with horror in this limited series about a teenaged Predator looking to add Archie and the gang to its kill list, making for one of my most enjoyable paneled-paged reading experiences of the year. A must-read for longtime fans of both the Archie and Predator franchises, this blood-splashed story is funny, fierce, and surprisingly heartfelt.

The last time Eli Roth worked in television was for Netflix’s Hemlock Grove, which lasted for three seasons. The horror show wasn’t one of the streaming service’s critical darlings, and it didn’t seem to be much of a hit with its customers either. Maybe his next effort will be better. Roth, partnering with Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity) […]

Undeterred by the recent BBFC ban of our first planned release Hate Crime, we’ve teamed up with our good friends at TheHorrorShow.TV to release another film by writer-director James Cullen Bressack: To Jennifer - the first film shot on an iPhone 5 (pre-dating the forthcoming Hooked Up by a number of months), To Jennifer stars Jessica Cameron, Chuck Pappas, Jody Barton and Bressack himself, and tells a story of love gone wrong shot in a cinema verité, as-it-happened format.
Joey suspects his girlfriend of two years, Jennifer, is cheating on him. He is so convinced that he enlists the help of his cousin Steven to create a video diary of his attempt to catch her in the act as well as to document the heartbreak she is putting him through. In an attempt to make her feel guilty, he intends to give this tape to her after catching her in the act.

The curtain has come down on another season of AMC’s hit show The Walking Dead, giving fans until October to mull over what they’ve witnessed during Season 5.
In the show’s new world created by the zombie apocalypse, there are only two guarantees: death and blood. And Season 5 offered more than enough of both.
The group took some big casualties over the last 16 episodes, but soldiered on, and were transformed from cattle ready for the slaughter into a battle-hardened unit, protected by their very own four walls.
Natural selection looks to be slowly weeding out the weakest members left in the world, as the physical and psychological effects of being in the wild so long have taken their toll, meaning that Rick and the gang’s enemies are becoming increasingly savage.
But the original group – plus some late additions – have also undergone the same process, with the...

If you’re a long time reader of my work, be it here on Nerdly, or the sites previous incarnation, Blogomatic3000, you’re probably aware of the my love for the work of a director called James Cullen Bressack. It was way back in 2011 when the young director emailed me out of the blue asking if I’d possibly like to review his first feature My Pure Joy – now the film was rough but showed a lot of promise for a first film. Bressack followed that film up with the (literally) stunning Hate Crime, a film which I’ve been championing since the first time I saw it…
So much so that when I sat down with a plan to release some of the many, many, films I’ve seen over the years that have not had the chance of an official UK debut, Hate Crime, along with Breassack’s...

Some films aren’t served very well by their titles. A name is just a name, but then again, first impressions can seal the deal. I didn’t see The Horror Show until about a week ago. Philadelphia's Awesome Fest sounds… well… awesome. To be clear, though, it appears this is an evolution of the already-existent event, which is now being called The Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival. As you would expect with a name like that, Bruce Campbell will indeed be there as part of the four-day event in Rosemont, Il, where they'll also be screening a slate of horror titles curated by Scott Weinberg, horror maven and the resident critic at the just-killed FEARnet. They'll also have panels, and they've got some great ones planned. Overall, it looks like a really cool chance to see a fistful of the best of what indie horror has going on right now with bonuses that simply make the weekend better. From August 21 to August 24, you'll be able to check out some great films. How? Well, here's how they put it: Tickets for All screenings are free to attend...

Lance Henriksen has been working steadily in the movies (and television) for decades now, and he has the elongated IMDb page to prove it. Even with nearly 200 titles to his name though he will most likely always be remembered for his work through the ’80s in films like The Terminator, Near Dark, Aliens, Pumpkinhead and more. Those films share something more than simple genre though — they’re also loaded with still memorable practical effects work. Granted, it was the ’80s, and CGI wasn’t exactly a known quantity, but the fact remains that nearly thirty years later we’re still impressed and affected by the scene in Aliens where Bishop (Henriksen) is grabbed by the alien queen, ripped in half and thrown along the floor. It’s accomplished with practical visual effects, and when the artists who crafted the scene (Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr. of StudioADI ) set out to make their own Kickstarter-funded movie this...

If there was one genre that spawned countless knock-offs (some better than the films they were imitating, others not so much) it was the slasher film. Even some films that were touted as the greats amongst the sub-genre would be still hidden in the shadows of the films they were emulating. There’s a waterfall effect to these films that start with Psycho and fall through Black Christmas onto Friday the 13th. But within the sub-genre, a splintering could be found as well, creating a mutated family hierarchy of slasherdom. Every slasher film had to find some sort of way of setting itself apart from the other, by creating some sort of different villain who was unstoppable and creative in ways that kept bodies in seats.
