Solid P.I. yarn from the 80's, excellent for a TV production..

I spied this little number while in the checkout line at BIG LOTS (can I say that?). For only $1.50, how could anyone lose? If you don't like it - turn it into a coaster :) Anyhow, since I never had much chance to catch 80's television (mostly by choice - so much of it was dreadful) I thought I'd take a chance on a slow Friday night.

In short, I was not disappointed by Street of Dreams; more like pleasantly surprised. It looks like some effort was made in writing, casting and producing this made-for-TV movie. I especially admire the contributions of David Marciano (Bando) the wise-cracking hood and Alan Autrey (Maurey Fields) without his "Heat of the Night" sou-than drawl in evidence.

Even John Hillerman's (Raymond Kepler) fake English accent is tolerable - it's much more polished and less hackneyed than when he starred in that HI P.I. show - yeah, you know which one. Diane Salinger plays his wife (Anne Kepler) and the only one who seems to know what's going on a-la Jane Hathaway (Nancy Kulp - The Beverly Hillbillies).

One of the other contributors has fairly described the plot of Street of Dreams in a nutshell - when (if) you watch this one various connections to Hollywood and the Mob also become evident. Besides the late model cars and Ms. Fairchild's (Laura Cassidy) 80's "big-hair" look this movie has not aged too badly. Video quality ranges from fair to quite good, depending on the light of each scene. It suffers at both extremes.

PS - I live just down the street from the HS that Ms. Fairchild attended and subsequently dropped-out of. To my eyes she looks even better today than back when they made Street of Dreams.

What can you expect from an 80's straight to TV movie?

When i got this movie free from my job, along with three other similar movies.. I watched then with very low expectations. Now this movie isn't bad per se. You get what you pay for. It is a tale of love, betrayal, lies, sex, scandal, everything you want in a movie. Definitely not a Hollywood blockbuster, but for cheap thrills it is not that bad. I would probably never watch this movie again. In a nutshell this is the kind of movie that you would see either very late at night on a local television station that is just wanting to take up some time, or you would see it on a Sunday afternoon on a local television station that is trying to take up some time. Despite the bad acting, cliché lines, and sub par camera work. I didn't have the desire to turn off the movie and pretend like it never popped into my DVD player. The story has been done many times in many movies. This one is no different, no better, no worse.

    Just your average movie.

    Sad TV Film from 1988

Ben Masters,(Kyd Thomas),"Dream Lover",'86 plays a sort of Mike Hammer character, a private eye who does any old job for a buck and never misses out on all the sexy curves of good looking gals. Kyd makes one big mistake when he stops Morgan Fairchild,(Laura Cassidy/Eva Bomberg),"Arizona Summer",'73 from getting beaten up and raped. Kyd takes Laura home to his pad and when he wakes up, she is out on his patio eating his eggs and orange juice and making herself right at home. By the way, Kyd sleep in his bed and Laura slept on the couch for this particular scene. Laura is mixed up with all kinds of hoods and there are some hot scenes between Kyd and Laura. All said and done, this is a lousy picture and I purchased the DVD for only $1.50 and I really got ripped OFF !
