Smells like trouble

Delitti e profumi or "Crimes and Perfumes" is a comedy/thriller that largely fails at both.

Director, Vittorio De Sisti, attempts to mix the amateur detective giallo story line with funny characters and situations. This idea was executed successfully by Sergio Corbucci with "Atrocious Tales of Love and Death" in 1979. However, De Sisti fails to strike the right balance.

Part of the problem is the impossibly stupid premise of a killer perfume that catches fire under bright lights. Also, there is no real mystery about the killer's identity. I figured it out half way through the film.

The other problem is that De Sisti lets his leads, Jerry Calà and Umberto Smaila, both behave like imbeciles. There is no straight man or foil. There is a great deal of slapstick humor that simply doesn't land if you've made it out of kindergarten. Also, it wasn't funny.
