Pokémon Go Made More Money In 2019 Than Ever Before
While Game Freak’s recent announcement for Sword and Shield demands the lion’s share of attention from Pokémon fans, Pokémon Go has quietly been celebrating a massive achievement.

The mobile game became an overnight cultural phenomenon when it was released back in 2016, drawing in millions of current and lapsed fans alike to experience an all-new kind of Pokémon adventure. Boasting augmented reality features with an emphasis on physical activeness, developer Niantic found itself overwhelmed with soaring player numbers. Unable to roll out new, frequently demanded features due to combating rampant cheating and stability issues, initial success tapered off, leaving behind a core – much smaller – loyal player base.

Three years later, having had more than enough time to get its bearings in the mobile market, Niantic has since released a number of major gameplay updates. The last 12 months alone marked the introduction of Team Rocket, Gen V Pokémon and a plethora of limited-time events,...

10 Awesome Things You Didn't Know Your Google Home Could Do
The Google Home and its versions, such as the Google Home Mini, are one of the latest in a long line of Smart Home devices. Devs (2020)
‘Devs’ Creator & ‘Ex Machina’ Filmmaker Alex Garland Has Civil Disobedience TV Series In The Works At FX – TCA
Devs (2020)
As part of his overall deal with FX Productions, Ex Machina and Annihilation filmmaker Alex Garland is looking to continue his work with the network on another TV series following his upcoming spring series Devs.

“The next thing I’m going to try to do is another television show with FX. I’m in the process of writing it. I’ve written the first episode and am halfway through the second episode. They (FX) haven’t seen anything. When I deliver it, and if they want to make it, then that’s where we’ll be,” Garland told Deadline today at TCA.

While Devs feels like it’s in the extended universe of Garland’s man-vs.-technology near-future universe of Ex Machina, the next TV series he’s writing won’t be set in the sci-fi realm.

“It’s about civil obedience and it’s in the here and now,...

Pokemon Home Release Date Window Confirmed
Rob Leane Jan 9, 2020

It won't be long before a lot of your critters can be housed in Pokémon Home.

Pokémon Home now has a release date window, with Nintendo confirming that the service is planned to launch in February. The service is a cloud-based storage system to house your cute critters, and you'll be able to access it on Nintendo Switch, Android devices, and iOS devices.

As far as we know, Pokémon Home will allow players to bring together the creatures they've caught on Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee, Pokémon Sword and Shield, and Pokémon Go. It will also connect up with Pokémon Bank, a similar service that previously enabled connections between the 3Ds games of the franchise.

As well as transferring creatures into Pokémon Home from all of those sources, you'll also be able to move your pocket monsters out of Pokémon Home and into Pokémon Sword and Shield,...

Meg Whitman in Charlie Rose (1991)
Quibi Unveils New Trailer and Platform Details at CES: Here’s What We Know About the Mysterious Streamer
Meg Whitman in Charlie Rose (1991)
Quibi’s April 6 launch is inching closer, and the mobile short-form streaming service made an aggressive sales pitch Wednesday morning at CES in Las Vegas.

The upcoming platform, created by longtime Hollywood and Silicon Valley power players Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman, has raised plenty of eyebrows since its unveiling in 2018, and not just because the streaming service will only work on mobile devices. Episodes of each Quibi series will run under 10 minutes, and the platform, short for “quick bites,” has tapped a dizzying array of high-profile actors, content creators, and major companies to create or invest in the service. Katzenberg and Whitman told CES attendees during a keynote that the service will release roughly 175 series within its first year, which they say would equate to around three hours of new content every day. The service has already attracted $1.4 billion in investments, including from Disney and other studios

While Katzenberg...

New Star Trek: Picard Trailer Teases The Return Of Data
The latest TV spot for Star Trek: Picard has offered some brief flashes of new footage for the much-anticipated return of Starfleet’s greatest captain, and has also given us a tacit suggestion of the appearance of Data.

The Irving Berlin song “Blue Skies” was a deliberate choice for the trailer, as it harks back to the events of Star Trek: Nemesis. It’s beautifully sung by Data during the wedding between Riker and Troi at the film’s beginning before the crew discovers the remnants of B-4, an earlier model of android. At the pic’s climax (spoilers for a movie released in 2002), Data sacrifices himself to destroy the Reman warship intending to spread thalaron radiation to destroy all life throughout the Federation, and in the final scene, B-4 begins absent-mindedly singing the song, suggesting that Data downloaded aspects of his memories and personality into his “brother” before his destruction.

New Star Trek: Picard Promo Features Final Version Of Data
Star Trek: Picard is now just 20 days away from arriving on CBS All Access at last. We’ve been waiting to see Patrick Stewart’s much-anticipated return as Jean-Luc ever since the legendary actor revealed the news in late 2018. The wait is almost over, though, and just to keep the hype going, this new TV spot has been circulating on CBS, with fans re-uploading it online for your enjoyment.

Though it runs for only 15 seconds, this Picard promo packs a lot in by featuring a series of brief shots pulled from various scenes and episodes, all while cutting back to Stewart’s moody face coming into focus. Of particular note are the fresh looks this spot gives us at both Brent Spiner’s Data and cybernetic villains the Borg.

First of all, if you pause the shot of Data sitting across a table from Picard, you’ll see that the...

Marvel Studios "Doctor Strange" Co-Starring 'Sub-Mariner'
Marvel Studios' developing sequel feature "Doctor Strange: In The Multiverse of Madness", will introduce Marvel Comics' WW II, anti-hero "Namor: The Sub-Mariner":

Plans fell through for a live action "Namor" TV series in the 1950's, starring Richard Egan, plus there was interest in a 1970's TV pilot...

...that was scrubbed because of a similarity to the NBC series "Man from Atlantis" (1977), starring Patrick Duffy, licensed for publishing by Marvel Comics.

To date, Universal still controls screen rights to the "Hulk" and will only allow Marvel Studios to feature the character as part of an ensemble, rather than as the main character in a stand-alone film.

"I can't speak for the studios," said Marvel's Joe Quesada about Disney recovering screen rights to Namor from Universal.

"But as far as I know, yeah we do (have screen rights). It’s not at Fox, it’s not at Sony...Yeah."

Band of Brothers: 10 TV Series You Forgot Michael Fassbender Was In
Michael Fassbender has emerged as one of the most versatile stars in recent years, performing in everything from Ridley Scott's Alien: Prometheus as an android, to intimate Westerns like Slow West as a laconic bounty hunter. Most know the ginger-haired Irish-German actor as the younger X-Men villain Magneto in X-Men: First Class, and he first came to the attention of movie goers in the big budget epic 300 as a Spartan warrior following King Leonidas.

Despite starring in blockbusters now, his breakout role was in the highly acclaimed HBO series Band of Brothers, and his early career is full of work in television and stage productions. Most have come from the UK, like the fantasy series Hex, and offered a wide variety of parts that built the foundation for his versatility today. Aside from Band of Brothers, here are 10 TV series you forgot Michael Fassbender was in.

100 Best Games of the Decade
John Saavedra Matthew Byrd Bernard Boo Dec 31, 2019

We've picked the very best games released this decade. Guess which titles ended up at the top?

What a difference 10 years make. We kicked off the 2010s with the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii, and we're ending the decade at the twilight of another generation of platforms. The PC remains a constant in our lives, but we'll soon be saying goodbye to the era of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. In the years between, we've also seen the rise of live services, cloud gaming, on-demand streaming, home-handheld console hybrids, and excellent experiences on our mobile devices. In 2010, we were impatiently waiting for Dlc expansions, and now we bow to the almighty battle pass.

What future will the 2020s bring? For one thing, we know that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are coming next year, while cloud gaming services like Google Stadia will continue...

The Best Portable High-Res Music Players
Kendra Kirchner in Androïde (1982)
Convenience is key. The on-demand economy is in full boom. And though there is generally nothing wrong with that, it does mean that quality can take a hit sometimes. For audiophiles, this most often takes place with digital music files.

True audio enthusiasts know there are few greater feelings than listening to a clean vinyl, on a perfectly tuned system, to recreate a concert experience, or fantastically transport the listener to a recording studio as a giddy bystander. But when it comes time for the daily commute, those listening experiences are dulled.

Sylvester Stallone at an event for The Oscars (2016)
Home Stallone: Sly Is Kevin McCallister in Home Alone DeepFake Video
Sylvester Stallone at an event for The Oscars (2016)
Sylvester Stallone is Kevin McCallister in the new deepfake parody video Home Stallone. Featuring Stallone's face on Macaulay Culkin's body, the video is just as strange as it sounds, and while we've seen plenty of odd deepfake videos before, Home Stallone just might be the strangest one yet. Presumably, the idea behind the video all comes down to how the word "alone" rhymes with "Stallone," but the ridiculous concept has resulted in a video that's pulled in over a million viewers in the span of two days.

In the video, several of the most notable scenes from Home Alone are used, with Stallone's face edited into the footage to replace Culkin. While most other deepfake videos will leave the audio intact with the original dialogue, Home Stallone goes the extra mile by replacing Culkin's dialogue with a Stallone impersonator using the actor's trademark accent. Oddly enough, the parody doesn't...

Amid Ongoing ‘Explore’ Tab Tests, YouTube Makes ‘Creator On The Rise’ Shelves More Prominent
In addition to its currently-in-testing ‘Featured In This Video’ tool, which automatically promotes video collaborators above a clip’s description box, YouTube is also testing out a revamped design of its in-development 'Explore' tab on its iOS and Android apps.

The Explore tab -- which replaces the ‘Trending’ tab at the bottom of the home screen for users involved in the test -- aims to help users more easily discover new videos and channels across numerous topics like fashion, music, and gaming, the company said on its Support forum..

“Trending isn’t going away, and will have its own section in Explore,” the company wrote. “We also want to better support growing/emerging YouTube channels, so we're testing a design where Creator and Artist On The Rise will be more prominent.”.

YouTube App Testing Tool That Automatically Promotes Video Collaborators
YouTube is reportedly testing a new feature on its Android app that will automatically enable creators to shout out collaborators directly underneath their videos -- rather than relegating links to already-teeming description boxes.

The tool, dubbed ‘Featured In This Video’ and spotted by 9To5Google, will automatically promote collaborators in a video without any input from the video’s primary creator. YouTube will automatically add channel and subscription links for collaborators that appear on videos that viewers already watched. YouTube will use a “range of signals” to auto-add these links to the new ‘Featured In This Video’ section, which will appear directly below videos and above description boxes.

Star Wars Fans Launch Petition Demanding Baby Yoda Emoji
It’s no secret that the Internet is obsessed with Baby Yoda. Ever since he first appeared in The Mandalorian, folks just can’t get enough of the adorable character. Star Wars fans are determined to insert the alien everywhere they can, too, including in Minecraft, Avengers: Endgame and even Starbucks. In fact, some love the tiny guy so much that they’ve permanently inked him on their bodies.

It’s safe to say that the world is infatuated with Baby Yoda, then, and it’s therefore only fitting that an emoji should be created for the creature, right? It appears so, as around a week ago, a fan named Travis Bramble launched an online petition to implore those in power to come up with a virtual symbol for everyone’s favorite fuzzy green hero. The entreaty has already amassed over 19,000 signatures and is now less than 6,000 names away from reaching its goal.

TikTok’s Parent Company Piloting Spotify Competitor ‘Resso’ In Emerging Markets
TikTok's parent company, the Chinese internet giant Bytedance, is readying what it hopes will be a sophomore smash -- a music subscription service called Resso that would compete with the likes of Spotify and Apple Music on the global stage.

Bytedance is currently testing Resso in emerging markets, including India and Indonesia, Bloomberg reports -- both of which already boast sizable TikTok user bases. Since its beta launch six months ago, Resso has been installed by 27,000 users on both iOS and Android. And unlike ad-supported TikTok, Resso is subscription-based, and thus could potentially open up another valuable revenue stream for Bytedance.

In addition to enabling users to download and stream music ad-free, Bloomberg notes that Resso’s key distinction from Spotify is its real-time display of lyrics, the ability for users to post comments under individual songs, and to create music-accompanied GIFs and videos -- a hallmark feature of TikTok.

Imgur Launches New ‘Melee’ App Where Users Can Host, Discover Gaming Memes
Imgur, the popular image-hosting hub, is making a play for the burgeoning esports market.

The platform, which counts 300 million users who spend an average of 30 minutes per day, has launched a new app called Melee, which is squarely focused on video gaming imagery, enabling users to create and host memes. Imgur made the move given that it’s already popular in the space -- with 46% of all users following video and board game tags, Techcrunch reports. Furthermore, 92% of Imgur users self-identify as gamers. Melee marks Imgur’s first-ever app launch beyond its flagship site.

How The Movies Told Us 2019 Would Be
Mark Harrison Dec 3, 2019

Blade Runner, Akira, and The Running Man are all set in 2019 – now that it’s December, we reflect upon movie futures-now-past…

This article comes from Den of Geek UK.

The future isn’t what it used to be. More than most decades, the 2010s have proven to be quite unlike the films that posited what they would be like. 2010 was supposed to be The Year We Make Contact. 2012 didn’t pan out like a Roland Emmerich movie after all. And as for 2015, countless words have already been written comparing reality to the vision of Back to the Future Part II. They had flying cars; we had that dress that was either white and gold or black and blue.

We’re over all that now, but as we approach the 2020s, how does 2019 measure up? For one reason or another, a lot of major genre movies of the...

The Worst Thing Each Main Character From The Good Place Has Done
Michael Schur's The Good Place is one of the most original television comedies of the past decade. However, things will somehow be very different in upcoming Disney Plus series WandaVision. Due to some kind of reality-bending, Wanda Maximoff and Vision will be living an idyllic life in a faux-1950s. And they might even have a couple of kids, too.

WWII Documentary Path Of The Past Screening at The Soldier’s Memorial in St. Louis Tuesday December 17th
Local WWII Documentary Path Of The Past announces a public screening on December 17th . The Award-winning film will also be available on VOD

As we steadily lose members of the Greatest Generation, Path of the Past celebrates them and the sacrifices they made during World War II while also presenting a cautionary tale about the horrors of war.

Path of the Past tells the story of Sgt. Louis “Louch” Baczewski, who was part of a tank crew in the 3rd Armored Division (Ad) that fought in all five major European campaigns, including the infamous Battle of the Bulge. The film focuses less on the American victory and more on the costs and European destruction of the war and is based on Lou Baczewski’s book Louch. “If you want to know what war is really like, Louch is a must read,” states retired 3 Star Lt. General Thomas Griffin: Former Commander of the 3rd Ad.

Google Teams With The Boxoffice Company On Enhanced Movie Ticketing System
Google and The Boxoffice Company, a collection of entertainment and tech businesses owned by French digital media giant Webedia, have teamed up to enhance the process of buying movie tickets online.

The new setup aims to make the task of selecting showtimes and seats and then paying for and managing tickets more efficient. It combines the voice-enabled Google Assistant and emerging Duplex AI phone tool with the online ticketing operations of 70 exhibitors and ticketing services in the U.S. and UK. Launch partners include AMC, Movietickets.com and Odeon, with discussions ongoing with other entities.

Google product manager Dan Ritter explained the service in a blog post. “Ask the Assistant something like, ‘Hey Google, showtimes for [movie] in Phoenix this weekend.’ Or, you can do a search for movie times from the Google app on Android,” he wrote. The system then guides you through the purchase, with another key variable being...

Emergence Season 1 Episode 7 Review: Fatal Exception
Piper choosing to stay with Jo and her family might have seemed comforting at the moment, but the overall picture is that Piper is getting too dangerous for her own good.

On Emergence Season 1 Episode 7, Emily got painted with a villainous brush-stroke as Jo figured out that they've naively been feeding information to the enemy the whole time.

Emily's intentions for Piper came into focus as she attempted to convince the human-like android that she's her mother and the only one who truly knows her.

When her attempts failed, Emily threatened Alan Wilkins until he reprogrammed Piper to do what she wanted.

He helped Emily replace Jo in every one of Piper's memories with herself.

Emily is a very broken soul, but her motivations for gaining Piper's love were a little underwhelming.

Emily: She's not doing what she's supposed to do.

Alan: Which is what?

Emily: Love me.

Alan: You're nuts.

Avengers: Endgame Theory Says Morgan Stark Was A Robot All Along
As the 3-hour climax of Marvel’s Infinity Saga and the all-time highest grossing film to boot, Avengers: Endgame has inspired more fan theories in the past seven months than we could possibly keep track of. Nonetheless, a new piece of speculation that’s been making the rounds on Twitter lately stands out from the rest not just for the amount of online attention it’s managed to attract, but also for how endearingly insane it is.

Twitter user @Sisabet was the first to tweet the theory, sharing a screenshot of a message sent to her by her sister. Apparently, she thought that Tony Stark’s supposed daughter Morgan was actually a robot created by the tech-savvy superhero. As evidence, they point to how Pepper Potts has very little interaction with the character, as though Morgan isn’t her actual child.

What’s more, the theory goes that when Iron...

Paul Bettany Will Return To The McU Following WandaVision
Vision was killed off by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, with the Mad Titan tearing the Mind Stone from his noggin moments before he wiped out half the universe. As his demise came by murderous rather than mystical means, Vis was not resurrected along with the rest at the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame, leaving the synthetic hero’s future in the franchise unclear. However, Vision is likely to have at least a couple more McU appearances left in him.

As we know, Paul Bettany will return in the upcoming WandaVision Disney Plus TV series, which is believed to feature Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch bringing back her lover via her reality-warping powers. This may suggest a temporary comeback is all that’s on the cards, but We Got This Covered has heard from our sources – the same ones who said Wiccan will debut in the show, and that a She-Hulk series was in the works,...

Disney Stock Hits Record High After Company Reports 10M Disney+ Sign-Ups – Update
Updated with closing stock price, analyst comments: Disney stock soared more than 6% to an all-time high after the company revealed Wednesday that its new streaming service, Disney+, has already drawn 10 million sign-ups.

That number, which the company ascribed in a press release to “extraordinary consumer demand,” may help explain why the service experienced widespread outages after launching early Tuesday. The glitches, which the company attributed to unexpectedly high interest that overloaded its technological infrastructure, diminished over the course of the opening day.

While 10 million sign-ups does not equal 10 million subscribers given that Disney has offered promotions including a free 7-day trial, Cowen & Co. analyst Doug Creutz called it a “very strong start” in a note to clients. Disney stock rose to just shy of $150 a share before closing Wednesday at $148.72 on five times its normal trading volume. Netflix, meanwhile, dropped 3% to $283.11. Stock movement overall was generally modest, with the Dow...

As Mark Zuckerberg Blasts TikTok, Instagram Is Testing A Copycat Product, ‘Reels’, In Brazil
Instagram, which successfully pilfered the Snapchat Stories format, is hoping for a similar coup with the highly-edited music video, meme, and challenge video medium proliferating on the platform du jour, TikTok.

Instagram is launching a new featured dubbed Reels that enables users to create 15-second video clips set to music, Techcrunch reports. The test, on iOS and Android, is rolling out exclusively in Brazil, where the new product is dubbed Cenas.

Users can share Reels to their Stories, though the clips also have the potential go viral within a new section of Instagram’s Explore tab dubbed Top Reels. Reels can be set to a catalog of music on Instagram -- thanks to Facebook’s licensing deals with major record labels and indie publishers -- or borrowed from other users’ videos. New editing features at launch include timed captions and a ghost overlay for lining up transitions.

Techcrunch notes that Stories might...

Why Ratheesh Poduval made ‘Android Kunjappan’, a film about a lonely old man and a robot
InterviewThe film has Suraj Venjaramoodu playing an 80-year-old while Soubin plays his son who works abroad.CrisDirector Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval doesn't use his native dialect when he speaks on the phone. He's from Payannur village of Kannur district, where he set his first ever film -- Android Kunjappan Ver 5.25 which released last Friday in Kerala. The film has a Thiruvananthapuram-based Suraj Venjaramoodu and a Kochi-based Soubin Shahir speaking the Kannur dialect. The film has been getting good reviews and Ratheesh is one happy director. “I tone down my Kannur slang when I speak to others so they understand. For the movie, I thought Suraj’s character might need a Thiruvananthapuram background to explain his accent but he spoke the Kannur dialect so well that it was not needed,” says Ratheesh. It is Soubin whom Ratheesh first cast in the movie – the son who has to leave his elderly father when...

With Europe Launch Set, Disney Plus Will Enter a Crowded Field With Killer Content, Analysts Say
With Disney Plus now set for launch in Europe next spring, analysts say that the service’s powerhouse lineup – spanning “Star Wars,” Marvel, Pixar, Disney and National Geographic content – should position it strongly in the region’s increasingly crowded and competitive on-demand landscape.

British-based consultancy Digital TV Research forecasts that, by 2025, Western Europe will account for a quarter of Disney Plus customers worldwide, with about as many subscribers as pay-tv broadcaster Sky currently has. By that point, the Disney Plus library is expected to boast 620 movies and 10,000 show episodes.

The service is set to bow in North America and the Netherlands on Nov. 12 and in New Zealand one week later. On Thursday, in an analyst call following the company’s latest quarterly results, Disney chief Bob Iger announced March 31, 2020, as the rollout date for Disney Plus “in the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Spain and a number of other countries in the region.
