Overwhlemed by emotions from my teenage years...

I was a teenager when I first saw the movie sometime around the middle of the 80's... And a few days ago a I heard Endless Love from Whitney Houston - it was totally overwhelming. The first thing that came to my mind were the first pictures of the movie and the FEELING <- all with capital letters because this movie is not about the highest level of film-making but it did show emotions in their fullness - and it could have been the goal and I think this very movie did reach its goal. Why am I saying this? Almost twenty years later I just heard the song, the main theme and the first thing I could visualize was the movie, the passion, the emotions everything the movie wanted to demonstrate - and I think it did, really did.

    a love story

Awful for many viewers. Boring for others. The worse Zefirelli. and, maybe, the critics are more bitter. But, in this case, Ihope, significant is to discover the good details. Sure, it is not a great film. But a decent one. For music. For performances of lead actors. For drops of authenticity. And, maybe, for the courage of viewer to not compare "Endless Love" with "Romeo and Juliet" . This is all. an imposible love story. two beautiful young actors. And a not the most inspired film.

An endless amount of flaws is more like it.

Based on the praised novel of the same name, this film deals with the obessive love between two teenagers during a span of about 5 years. With all the talent behind this, including the director, Brooke Shields, and the source of the material you would think this would be a terrific movie, but don't be fooled. It is awful. The two leads are OK, but the rest of the cast just hams it up in a most embarrasing way, the script is really lumpy, the editing perfectly awful, and the direction nowhere near as good as the directors previous efforts (which include Romeo and Juliet and The Taming of the Shrew). Some people may find it good on a so bad its good level. Others beware. My rating: 3 out of 10. (because the title song is excellent)

    Endlessly Intriquing

Saw this movie when it came out and have watched it a few times since then. Really interesting to apply the mentality of today to a film which was made in an entirely different era. The late 70s was an era of experimentation which is reflected in the film. It would not make sense in today's context. Kudos to the young actors who showed how a first love can become an obsession. I think given her age, Brooke Shields did a great job with showing how out of control an immature relationship can get. The movie makes me remember a time when you could explore without being branded, grow without being labeled.

    Unforgettably endless film, ala Zeffereli

Here's one of the unforgettable 80's films, heralded by it's title song. EL is a beautifully shot and acted film, of a boundless love, between two late teens, (Shields and Hewitt, perfectly paired) which when sabotaged by outside parties, heads on a path of damage and destruction, which weighs heavily on Hewitt's character. He becomes unhinged, by the vetoing of him from Shield's family, after things really start to heat up. Besides an undeniable and explosive passion, there are other contributing factors here, with exams and finals coming up. Don Murray as Shield's father was a standout here, where Shirley Knight as the mother who was really good, but it was Murray, who added spice. Knight's open Mother character, was one I really liked though. As you'll see, they aren't your typical family, but they're one you like to be part off. James Spader as the protective and pushy son, who was the catalyst you'll see, was fun to watch. You really feel for Hewitt's character during his breakdown, with emotionally powered moments, this, the strongest section of story. But it's hard to really feel anything for Shield's character until her return, after a long absence of screen time, as really, you hardly learn much about her character, and not that much more in the after. Nearing it's end, there were some well up tear moments, where soon you have a sudden, yet, unsatisfactory, but thought provoking ending, in this Zeffereli's 80 masterpiece. One movie that will make you ponder, well after the curtains, have come down.

    • Trivia
Brooke Shields said she was still a virgin when she filmed this and had no sexual experience. So for her intimate love-making scene with Martin Hewitt, director Franco Zeffirelli kept grabbing her toe and twisting it off camera to provoke a reaction that would look like a sex expression. Shields revealed later that it hurt, and it humiliated and traumatized her so much, she "really shut down after that".
    • Goofs
At night, as David is starting the fire, when the wind in the trees is shown, day-for-night filming fails to hide that the sunny blue sky can clearly be seen through the foliage.
    • Quotes

Jade Butterfield: You know what I keep thinking about? A night in the house. I was a little girl, and then I saw David all alone. And I don't know. I just... I wanted to go to him. Was that wrong? I wasn't a happy little girl anymore. Something changed. The first time in my life I was me.

Ann Butterfield: Life goes on. We change.

Jade Butterfield: But it hurts. It hurts so much.

Ann Butterfield: Oh, Baby, it all happened so fast for you. When you live a lifetime you'll understand it.

Jade Butterfield: But he loved me. He loves me! No one will ever love me as much.

Ann Butterfield: Many people will love you. You'll see.

Jade Butterfield: But not like that. Not like David.
