Female-facing horror finds a striking new voice in Julia Max, making her feature debut at SXSW with The Surrender, which, if you can accept the interpretation of David Cronenberg’s The Brood as his idea of a body-horror Kramer Vs Kramer, functions similarly as a bloody genre reworking of Postcards from the Edge. Notionally, it’s a film about grief and how the death of a father reverberates around a tight-knit family that has drifted apart. Max handles that very well, but the real meat is in the story of a mother and daughter who find that his sudden absence opens up a whole other can of worms.
To keep you on your toes, Max opens the film with a bang; following a trail of blood on what looks to be floor of a cave or crypt, the camera finds a frightening demonic creature gnawing away at a human body.

In the magical world of Italian Giallo, there are solid mysteries, visual masterpieces and some outright hilarious outings. And then, there is Lucio Fulci's A Lizard in a Woman's Skin — an erotic, gory extravaganza that looks like a sex dream gone wrong and straight into a surrealist nightmare territory. The film came out in 1971, years before he made his trademark bonkers horrors he's best known for, such as The Beyond, The House by the Cemetery and the Zombie films. Yet, his uncompromising style is already evident here. Its major themes — the thin border between reality and fantasy, the correlation between sex and violence, the eternal contradiction between what the mind wants and what the body craves — are communicated through this thriller's style. And as the gorgeous visuals always balance on the edge of surreal and almost hyperrealistic here, the heroine gets lost between two strange worlds — as does the audience.

The city of New Orleans is unlike any other when it comes to the mysteries that permeate it. The legends of Marie Laveux, the supposed Voodoo queen of the city, and the way death is celebrated in locations such as Congo Square and St. Louis Cemetery have made New Orleans a hotbed for tourists and those fascinated with Southern Gothic. There have been just as many morbid true cases in the area, such as that of Allen Robicheux, a Baton Rouge resident who buried himself in a crypt in his own house in 1973 and committed suicide; his final resting place full of items that appeared to hint at a private life as a voodoo practitioner.
In 1981, Lucio Fulci made his own effort at mystery and macabre horror set in Americas Voodoo capital with The Beyond. The Beyond, also known by its alternate title, Seven Doors of Death, is one of Fulcis most renowned works,...

Despite rarely gaining accolades and praise from contemporary and mainstream film critics, Lucio Fulci is a name that needs little introduction among horror fans and aficionados of cult European cinema. Known for creating images of excessive violence that earned him the nickname the "godfather of gore," Lucio Fulci spent much of his career pushing the envelope and, in many cases, tearing it completely to shreds.
Among the best-known contributions from the director is his Gates of Hell trilogy, consisting of The Beyond, City of the Living Dead, and The House by the Cemetery. All three took place in the United States and explored some of the horror traditions associated with their accompanying areas. Set in New Orleans, The Beyond embraces the Southern gothic horror tradition, and the City of the Living Dead contains a subtle nod to H.P. Lovecraft, with the film taking place in the town of Dunwich.

Halloween is just around the corner and Super7 is getting in the spooky mood with a new set of figures that honor the early days of comic book-bound horror. Following the release of their Pre-Code comics figures and t-shirts earlier this year that brought to life the goofy and gory stories of series like Chamber of Chills, The Unseen, and The Beyond, the pop-culture toy brand is resurrecting them once more with a haunting toxic aura. Further advancing their "Boodega" initiative, this glow-in-the-dark set will feature four icons of the era, including Dead Darling, Heartless Zombie, Spine-Chilling Ghoul, and Voracious Werewolf, to add to your collection. To celebrate their release, Collider is excited to once again give an exclusive look at each figure lovingly recreated from their respective issues.

Italian composer Fabio Frizzi began paying tribute to frequent collaborator Lucio Fulci with a live show titled Frizzi 2 Fulci in 2013, which paved the way for The Beyond: Composer’s Cut in 2022. Following its success, the maestro began working on a composer’s cut for another Fulci classic.
Zombie: Composer’s Cut features Frizzi’s reworked score to Fucli’s 1979 film performed live to a screening of the film, transforming a mere movie viewing into a concert experience. Currently touring the US, I ate up the performance at Sonia in Cambridge, Ma on September 7.
The new soundtrack isn’t wall-to-wall music; Frizzi smartly opted to stay true to his original score — the oft-reprised prog rock main theme, the eerie synthesizer soundscapes, the tribal rhythms that evoke a voodoo curse — with some reinterpretation and expansion along the way. The music occasionally overpowers the dialogue, but Fulci often placed more importance on style than plot anyway.

Legendary underground filmmaker Scooter McCrae returns after a 21-year absence from feature filmmaking with the bold, vulgar, and deeply thought-provoking Black Eyed Susan. Simultaneously brutally challenging and deeply vulnerable, the latest from the New York-based provocateur appropriates bleeding-edge science fiction concepts to address the seemingly endless lengths that men will go to satisfy their darkest impulses without questioning the consequences of their actions.
In the film, down-on-his-luck Derek (Damien Maffei; The Strangers: Prey at Night) is hired by a shady tech industrialist to “test” Susan, a lifelike robot built for the purpose of receiving and “enjoying” sexual abuse. Initially hesitant to take part, Derek accepts, but quickly finds himself drawn to Susan’s developing personality and inquisitive nature. As the robot’s expanding humanity chips away at him and he learns more about his own secret desires, he questions if what he’s been tasked to do – even to a robot – should ever be condoned.

The Hangman opens with a nod to Fulci’s The Beyond, as a title card informs us that there are seven known gateways to Hell. The one we’re concerned with here isn’t under a hotel in New Orleans, though, it’s somewhere in a nameless part of the mountains of West Virginia.
That’s followed by some cultists pulling something out of that portal, a creature we then see transform a couple of junkies from strung out to strung up. Meet The Hangman.
Oblivious to all of this, Leon and his son Jesse are going on a father and son weekend in the mountains. Unfortunately, the first night goes badly, ending in recriminations over the death...

Puppet Combo are once again taking it old-school in more ways than one. Originally released in 2019 on itch.io, the developer has announced that their PS2 Survival Horror-inspired title The Glass Staircase will be headed to Steam, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch on May 24.
Described as “a short-form old-school psychological horror game”, The Glass Staircase takes place in 1922, inside a dilapidated estate converted into an orphanage. Four girls attempt to survive long enough to complete their chores and find a new home. As these things go, unknowable horrors have punctuated the history of the house, and they’re about to learn about them the hard way.
Rather than focusing on grotesque slasher horror, The Glass Staircase is a surreal and atmospheric game, inspired by PS2 survival horror titles like Silent Hill 2 and the GameCube classic Eternal Darkness. Of course, you have to toss in those classic 80s Italian horror movies such as The Beyond,...

Max Beyond tells the story of Max, a young boy held captive in a research facility. Using his ability to create rifts in the fabric of spacetime across parallel universes, he searches for the reality in which his brother Leon, a former-marine, manages to rescue him. With attempt after attempt ending in Leon’s death, the strain starts to take its toll on both brothers. When Max discovers his captors are using his power against him, he realizes he must stop focusing on how the story ends and rewrite the story from the beginning.
Max Beyond is directed, co-written and co-produced by Hasraf ‘HaZ’ Dulull, co-written by Stavros Pamballis (Siege On Liperti Street) and co-produced by Paula Crickard. The cast includes BAFTA-award-winning actor Jane Perry, Dave Fennoy (The Walking Dead) and Cade Tropeano (Black Bird); with motion capture performances from Ace Ruele (Eternals) and Alex Kong (Marvel Studio’s What If?...

These past two years I've been fortunate to experience everything from a séance and a Vampire Ball to Halloween costume parties in April at The Overlook Film Festival (you can read all about it in my previous event report), and as I prepare to attend "summer camp for horror fans" for a third year in a row, the initial lineup for the festival's 2024 edition already has me wishing it were time to head to the Big Easy.
Brimming with must-see screenings and immersive experiences, the initial lineup for The Overlook Film Festival 2024 has plenty for horror fans to mark on their calendars between April 4th–7th, including Cuckoo, Abigail, I Saw the TV Glow, Blackout, a 50th anniversary screening of Phantom of the Paradise (with Paul Williams in attendance), and a 10th anniversary screening of Oculus with director Mike Flanagan, who will be in attendance along with Kate Siegel to...

Aquarius Releasing founder Terence “Terry” Levene, who released dozens of B-movies in grindhouse theaters in the 1970s and ’80s and beyond, died Jan. 13 in Englewood, NJ. He was 90.
After working at Commonwealth United, Levene started Aquarius Releasing, which released genre films ranging from kung fu to sci-fi and far beyond and serve as a sub-distributor for Roger Corman and others. Aquarius had offices above the Selwyn Theatre on 42nd St. in New York, and released films including “Silent Night, Deadly Night,” “Isaac Hayes: Black Moses of Soul” and Lucio Fulci’s “The Beyond” (retitled as “Seven Doors of Death.”)
Among the other films he distributed or booked were the New York release of the wildly successful sex film “Deep Throat,” the Northeastern release of “Halloween” and John Sayles’ “Alligator.”

Terry Levene, the schlock showman who as the head of Aquarius Releasing was behind such films as Bruce Lee Fights Back From the Grave and Doctor Butcher, Medical Deviate, has died. He was 90.
Levene died Jan. 13 surrounded by his family in Englewood, New Jersey, Severin Films executive Josh Johnson announced.
Operating out of an office above the Selwyn Theatre on West 42nd Street in New York, Levene creatively marketed low-budget American features including Isaac Hayes: Black Moses of Soul (1973) and Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984).
For grindhouses and drive-ins, the onetime amateur boxer rebranded Lucio Fulci’s supernatural horror film The Beyond (1981) as Seven Doors of Death (1985) and Umberto Lenzi’s Italian shocker Cannibal Ferox (1981) as Make Them Die Slowly (1983), promoting the gory latter as “The Most Violent Film Ever! Banned in 31 Countries!”

As every new month brings an insane tidal wave of new additions to streaming libraries, it can be tough selecting the perfect watch. Even more so when it comes to Tubi, a streaming platform with a vast, overwhelming selection of titles that include everything from mainstream releases to obscure deep cuts once trapped on VHS.
Because the streaming service excels so well at this with a layout that isn’t always the easiest to navigate when hunting down rare titles or finding the best horror movies on Tubi, we’re here to help.
For February, we’re narrowing it down to twenty horror movies you should watch, from recent gems to required viewing from horror masters. More specifically, this list avoids too many of the obvious classics, like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (also streaming on Tubi), to instead offer a wider variety slightly off the beaten path.

“The Godfather of Gore” Lucio Fulci worked across all genres, but it’s his horror output that’s most remembered thanks to his knack for visceral violence, gore, and unconventional storytelling. All of these are on prominent display in his Lovecraftian “Gates of Hell” trilogy that began with 1980’s City of the Living Dead. While its atmosphere and gross-out gore gags are the standout reasons to watch, City of the Living Dead also happens to make for a stellar Halloween hidden gem.

Spiders rank high among the iconic symbols of Halloween thanks to endless seasonal décor and their superstitious association with witches. Still, the eight-legged arachnids are frequently considered the scariest thanks to the prevalent fear of them. Spiders tend to elicit a reaction.
Most people go out of their way to avoid the eight-legged creatures, whether due to full-blown arachnophobia or just a mild unease. This week’s streaming picks capture the primal terror that spiders evoke; if you’re not arachnophobic now, these five movies might instill a new fear.

“Tonight we have special news for you: we closed all the exits. You can’t escape,” Claudio Simonetti deadpanned in his Italian accent to the enthusiastic crowd at the Somerville Theatre in Somerville, Massachusetts on October 3. Clad in something like a ringmaster jacket over a Deadpool T-shirt, a smile beamed across the maestro’s face.
The audience erupted into laughter chased by cheers, as they knew they were about to experience something special: the 1985 cult classic Demons on the big screen with a live score performed by Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin, a modern tribute to the prolific Italian prog-rock composers Goblin fronted by the founding keyboardist.

No horror director has ever had a better year than the legendary Italian director, Lucio Fulci. In 1981, Fulci released three chilling bangers, one after another, and slam-dunked on all of his competition like he was crafting scares in his sleep. First, he released the loose Edgar Allen Poe adaptation, The Black Cat. Following that cult classic, Fulci debuted what might be his most beloved film, the absolutely disgusting and haunting flick The Beyond. Then, closing out his flagship year, we were thrown one last bone with The House by the Cemetery, a movie that manages to ride the line between atmosphere and gore that his previous two films set up. All three of these movies rock and helped propel their director into the stratosphere as one of the greatest horror directors of all time. If you're new to Fulci and need a place to start, you could do way worse than his 1981 selections.

The director of cult films Shatter Dead (1994) and Sixteen Tongues (1999), Shooter McCrae has wrapped production on his third feature film, titled Black Eyed Susan.

“The stylishly spare, lo-fi aesthetic erotic science fiction feature was filmed on Super 16 in Brooklyn and other areas of Upstate New York. Its cast includes Damian Maffei, Marc Romeo, and ex-WWE Superstar Scott Fowler. Model Yvonne Emilie Thälker marks her feature film debut as the picture’s titular character.”
Desperate for work, Derek (Maffei) accepts a job replacing his recently-deceased friend at a tech startup. Continuing to develop the company’s innovative project means working intimately with Susan (Thälker), a bleeding-edge Bdsm sex doll meant to receive and appreciate punishment as an integral part of her evolving AI.
Derek will soon test the limits of his own desires and explore the nature of man and woman,...

Ghoulies is not the Gremlins rip-off its reputation suggests. The two films were in production at the same time, but budgetary issues delayed the release of Ghoulies. Although it likely benefited from Gremlins‘ success, the similarities begin and end with diminutive monsters. Ghoulies II actually shares more in common with Gremlins, as the first Ghoulies leans more — arguably too much — into the fantasy realm.
From producer Charles Band’s Empire Pictures, the 1985 horror-comedy is directed by Luca Bercovici (Rockula) from a script he co-wrote with producer Jefery Levy. At just over 80 minutes, the film doesn’t waste time trying to make sense of its messy plot.
When Jonathan Graves (Peter Liapis) inherits an old manor from the father he never knew, he does what any 20-something with newfound freedom would do: throw a party. Something wills Jonathan to perform a ritual from an old book he finds among his father’s occult paraphernalia,...

Stars: Stephanie Leet, Neil Green, Erik Skybak, Chynna Rae Shurts | Written and Directed by Calvin Morie McCarthy
Insidious Inferno is the latest film from Calvin Morie McCarthy and like his previous films Conjuring: The Beyond and An Amityville Poltergeist it has a title that refers to two other genre films, neither of which it has any connection to. Regular readers will also know that I didn’t have anything good to say about them. I did, however, like his last film, Pillow Party Massacre, and the trailer for Insidious Inferno definitely grabbed my attention. As a result, I was quite curious about how this would turn out.
Monica has inherited her father’s house, a house she hates as much as she hated him while he was alive. Her husband Andre tells her she has to move on from it, but he can’t get over the death of his daughter from a previous marriage.

How do Lucio Fulci fans catalogue their favorites? By number of atrocious set pieces? Or by simply weighing the entrails and moving from there? Fulci’s career is by no means limited to his gruesome peak in the late ’70s and early ’80s, but it’s sure difficult to find many who hold his ’60s spy knockoffs and westerns in as high regard as violent stoners do the likes of Zombie, The New York Ripper, and City of the Living Dead (also known as The Gates of Hell). While there’s no denying the effectiveness of the cheapjack surrealism underpinning The Beyond, most of his other gore touchstones are notable only for the extreme lengths they’re willing to go, not how far they’re capable of burrowing beyond viewers’ gag reflexes.

Since launching in 2020, Cauldron Films has quickly established itself as a boutique label to watch for cult film fans. In addition to unearthing and restoring obscurities like The Crimes of the Black Cat, American Rickshaw, and Frankenstein ’80, they’ve secured a few heavy hitters. Their most recognizable title to date is Lucio Fulci’s City of the Living Dead (originally released in the US as The Gates of Hell). Following an exclusive slipcase edition last year, a standard retail version of the 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray set is available this week.
The 1980 Italian horror film is significant for kicking off Fulci’s thematically connected Gates of Hell trilogy, followed by The Beyond and The House by the Cemetery the next year. Developed in the wake of Fulci’s success with Zombie in 1979, City of the Living Dead features more undead ghouls but this time as accoutrements rather than a centerpiece.
