NBC's 1980s Superhero TV Show Was An Intriguing But Disappointing Sci-Fi Flop
Image
In the days before cable television got serious about creating original programming, the networks were just about the only game in town if you wanted to watch a new hour-long drama or half-hour sitcom. This meant it was on three broadcast entities to serve a diverse array of viewers with cop procedurals, family-friendly comedies, urbane farces, nighttime soaps, Westerns and science fiction. There were certain formulas that worked and got rehashed as needed, but the networks were always on the lookout for something out of the ordinary, a smarter-than-average take on one of the aforementioned genres, or, even better, a daringly innovative series that captured the public's imagination. Shows like "Soap," "St. Elsewhere" and "Twin Peaks" pulled this off with stunning élan, but when a network risk went south there was always the chance that you'd wind up with a pop cultural punchline like "My Mother, the Car," "Supertrain," or "Cop Rock.

Department of Homeland Security Considering Pitch for U.S. Citizenship Competition Reality Show
Image
The Department of Homeland Security is considering a reality television show pitch from a Duck Dynasty producer that would focus on U.S. citizenship.

The show, called The American, would put immigrants through a series of challenges as they compete for U.S. citizenship. It’s being pitched by reality TV veteran Rob Worsoff (Duck Dynasty, The Millionaire Matchmaker), as he confirmed on his Facebook page on Friday. “It’s not mean-spirited. Instead, ‘The American’ is a celebration of what it means to be… well… American – At a time when our morale is at an all-time low,” Worsoff said.

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Department of Homeland Security assistant secretary for public affairs Tricia McLaughlin confirmed that the show was being reviewed.

“The Department of Homeland Security receives hundreds of television show pitches a year, ranging from documentaries surrounding Ice and Cbp border operation to white collar investigations by Hsi,...

I’m Convinced Dynasty’s Fallon Carrington Could Not Outshine These On-Screen Billionaires (Includes Succession)
Image
Filthy rich television characters have no satisfaction—they already have wads of fortune yet they still grapple and kill for more money. It’s a different story when the entire family is involved, as the fight to stay on top of their game and protect their wealth always prevails.

Whenever we talk about billionaires, Dynasty’s Fallon Carrington immediately comes to mind. She’s an heiress and businesswoman, and most importantly, a highly intelligent, competent, and charismatic figure in the show.

Dynasty’s Fallon Carrington pales in comparison with these ultra-wealthy tycoons Elizabeth Gillies in Dynasty / Credits: The CW

The CW’s Dynasty is a reboot of the 1981 soap opera drama of the same title. The Carringtons from the original show were already dirty rich with a net worth of $500 million (as per Collider), but this isn’t so impressive in today’s financial landscape. The new Carringtons, including Elizabeth Gillies’ Fallon,...

What Happened To The Cast Of Revenge Of The Nerds?
Image
"Heeh! Heeh! Heeh!" With a wheezy laugh and goofy grins, "Revenge of the Nerds" took 1984 by storm. In a theatrical year dominated by Axel Foley, Indiana Jones, Gizmo, the Ghostbusters, and Mr. Miyagi, it was a raunchy college comedy for the older kids, promoting the triumph of the intelligent and the uncool over the strong and the sexy.

Beloved at the time, it has aged poorly in some respects, as it treats sorority girls as prizes to be won, and depicts some decidedly non-consensual intimate moments exploited and played for pranks. For the sequel, which helped launch Bradley Whitford's career, the nerds' hijinks were toned down to a PG-13, and two subsequent films, made for TV, had to deal with even stricter network censorship. There's still occasional talk of a reboot at some point though.

Most of the main cast returned for every installment, while others went on to bigger things,...

All American season 7 is coming to Netflix very soon
Image
You don't have to wait too much longer to watch All American season 7 on Netflix!

Thanks to Netflix's list of new shows coming in May, we know that All American season 7 is coming to Netflix shortly after the season finale airs on The CW. As things stand, the All American season 7 release date on Netflix will be on Tuesday, May 13.

The All American season 7 finale is scheduled to air on Monday, May 5, so the new season will be added to Netflix in the United States just eight days later.

Pardon me, but I'm getting a little nostalgic thinking about all the other seasons of The CW shows that used to be released on Netflix under that partnership.

It seems like it's been so long since the glory days of the Netflix-cw deal that brought new seasons of The CW shows to Netflix just eight days after the season finale. That...

‘Shrinking’ star Ted McGinley has been ‘brought to tears’ by the response to his performance: ‘It’s been an amazing journey’
Image
Ted McGinley has been a television star for decades, dating back to his debut performance on Happy Days and series regular work in '80s stalwarts like The Love Boat, Dynasty, and Married… With Children. However, for years, McGinley was dogged by an unfounded reputation as a show killer, to the extent that McGinley has said in past interviews that his moniker as the “patron saint of jumping the shark” cost him acting jobs.

So, McGinley is understandably emotional about the universal acclaim he’s received for his performance on the Apple TV+ comedy series Shrinking.

“I’m telling you, I’ve been brought to tears,” McGinley tells Gold Derby. “I’m so used to being the worst, or being told that I’m such a bad guy to add to a show. This has been an amazing journey and experience, and I honestly feel blessed. I’m working in scenes with Harrison Ford.

“Marc and Amanda Are Still Together”: This Is What an ‘Ugly Betty’ Reboot Would Look Like, According to Michael Urie and Becki Newton
Image
The success of the first two seasons of Ugly Betty back in the early aughts created a passionate fan base that still loves the series to this day despite its shortcomings. You can ask any fan of the show, and most of them will tell you that one of the best things about it was the comedic duo formed by Marc (Michael Urie) and Amanda (Becki Newton). During a new interview with Collider's Michael Zimmerman to promote their rewatch podcastStill Ugly, the two actors talked about their experience in the series and tried to imagine what a reboot would look like today.

We can't ignore that Ugly Betty was a product of its time. In the context of the series, Marc and Amanda worked in an environment in which bullying was not only allowed but encouraged. However, Urie and Newton found a way to make it funny and more...

Alicia Silverstone in Clueless (1995)
Alicia Silverstone is attached to reprise the role of Cher Horowitz in a “Clueless” sequel series at Peacock, Variety has learned.

Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are attached to write along with Jordan Weiss. All three will executive produce, with Schwartz and Savage doing so under their Fake Empire banner. Silverstone will executive produce in addition to starring. Amy Heckerling, who wrote and directed the film, and Robert Lawrence, who produced the film, also serve as executive producers. CBS Studios will produce in association with Universal Television.

This is a wholly new “Clueless” series than the one that had been set up at Peacock in 2020 but ultimately did not go forward. That show, with a completely different creative team, was...

12 Best Agatha Christie Movies, Ranked
Image
There's something very comforting about curling up with a cozy murder mystery. Easy-going, nostalgic, and usually low on violence after an inciting incident, they can be the perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life. Sure, a few people might get killed, but you know that the bad guys will (almost) always get their comeuppance and order in the movie's self-contained world will be restored by the time the credits roll. Little wonder that the format enjoyed a resurgence during the pandemic with millions seeking solace from the likes of "Murder, She Wrote" and "Columbo." These old shows are so relaxing, their modern-day equivalents like "Poker Face" even helped me beat insomnia a few years back.

Although the term "cozy mystery" didn't exist when she was writing, Agatha Christie is now regarded as the mother of the format. After introducing Hercule Poirot in her first novel, "The Mysterious Affair at...

Match #1: Jon Moxley def. Katsuyori Shibata The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:

Shibata and Mox chain wrestled to begin the match. Mox backed Shibata into the corner and Shibata chopped him. They traded strikes in the center of the ring. Shibata didn’t even budge when he got it. Moxley was wincing and giving ground. Moxley booted Shibata in the side of the face. Shibata used a back heel trip to sweep Mox to the mat. Shibata applied a flying octopus hold. Mox escaped. Shibata was right there to boot Mox in the head. Shibata charged at the champion with a running dropkick in the corner. Moxley fired back with a clubbing lariat.

Marquita Goings On Hayley’s Drama and Bonding With the Beyond the Gates Cast

Star Trek's oldest living director is not William Shatner, but rather...
Image
Star Trek fans seemed excited to learn that David Frankham, who turned 99 years old on February 16, is now the oldest living actor to have appeared in any iteration of Star Trek. He played Larry Marvick in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode, “Is There in Truth No Beauty?,” which first aired in 1968, during the show’s third and final season. It got us wondering who Star Trek’s oldest living director might be.

For obvious reasons, many people who guessed that 94-year-old William Shatner is Star Trek’s oldest living actor also likely assume that Shatner -- who helmed Star Trek V: The Final Frontier -- is the franchise’s oldest living director. But he’s not.

The answer is Ralph Senensky, who will turn 102 on May 1. Senensky called the shots on what he refers to as six and a half episodes of The Original Series. We’ll explain...

Image
Sad news for Star Wars fans today as Clive Revill, best known as the original voice of the villainous Emperor Palpatine in The Empire Strikes Back, has died at the age of 94. Over a prolific career, the actor made many appearances on stage and screen, and his passing is the loss of another star from a generation that gave the world some pioneers of modern cinema. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Revill died March 11 at a care facility in Sherman Oaks following a long battle with dementia.

Born in 1929, Revill showed a love of acting at a young age and attended many schools and colleges on his way to a professional career which began in England. Appearing in many West End productions, the actor became a powerhouse performer in both modern – at the time – and Shakespearean roles, lending his voice to characters of both dramatic and comedic inclination.

15 Toughest Western Heroes of All Time, Ranked
Image
Since the Golden Age of Hollywood, the film industry has tackled a range of genres, from horror to comedy, delivering audiences a long list of iconic stories and heroes. The Western has proven particularly fascinating, bringing the medium some of its strongest scripts and best-written heroes. One of the defining traits of a good hero of the Old West is endurance and grit, two features key to survival on the frontier.

Western heroes represent some of the most morally ambiguous characters in fiction due to the time's ever-changing morality as criminals could reinvent themselves as lawmen or bounty hunters. Even beyond the Old West, the archetypes established by the genre have laid the foundations of iconic franchises, whether it's Star Wars' Mandalorian or the crew of Firefly. Thanks to actors like Clint Eastwood and John Wayne, audiences have decades of hardened heroes to choose from when it comes to tough Western protagonists.

The Classic Western That Clint Eastwood Compared To James Bond
Image
It's no accident that when you envision Clint Eastwood in his most iconic roles, it's often accompanied by a cowboy hat and the scowl that made him one of our great movie stars. He's had a prolific career across just about every genre from action movies ("Dirty Harry") to psychological thrillers ("Play Misty For Me") and even romance dramas ("The Bridges of Madison County"). But let's face it, the man has a face that was born to star in westerns.

Eastwood's hail mary casting on the western television show "Rawhide," which he describes as a fluke, opened the door for more opportunities in the industry. He didn't take many roles across his impressive eight season stretch as cattle poker Rowdy Yates, but it didn't matter because the one he did secure led to the birth of one of his most recognizable characters and some of the best spaghetti westerns ever made.

What Has The Burn Notice Cast Been Up To Since The Show Ended?
Image
To be a proper spy, you tend to need the backing of some sort of organization, governmental or otherwise. Without that, you're just sort of a guy skulking around, and that's not very James Bond, is it? In "Burn Notice," Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) finds out firsthand what it's like to be a spy left out in the cold, when he is "burned" (or discredited) and abandoned by his former employer. Left with an impressive but fairly limited set of skills, he has no choice but to go freelance, taking on assignments within the criminal underworld of Miami.

"Burn Notice" initially ran on the USA Network, and it was popular enough to earn itself a respectable seven seasons from 2007 to 2013, as well four Emmy nominations over the years. After the show went off the air, its talented cast of performers moved on to other things. Now that it's been over...

The Blockbuster Sci-Fi TV Miniseries That Starred Freddy Krueger
Image
When looking back at 1983 television, there are two things noticeably absent: science fiction and anything that required actual thought. No offense to the likes of Dallas, Dynasty, or The A-Team, but "clever social commentary" was barely, if ever, on their agenda, and the closest to sci-fi was K.I.T.T. on Knight Rider. Then came V, the sci-fi miniseries based on Sinclair Lewis' "It Can't Happen Here," except with aliens. V was intelligent, bold, exciting, and horrifying (especially if you're not keen on seeing a live guinea pig being eaten), and proved popular enough to warrant a sequel miniseries, a proper TV series, and a reboot. It also happened to have in its cast the man who would become known as Freddy Krueger the following year.

'Looking to Play a Cowboy': Dave Bautista Wants to Star in a Clint Eastwood-Style Western
Image
Dave Bautista said his In the Lost Lands character is inspired by Clint Eastwood’s Westerns. Eastwood starred in a handful of genre films before the Dollars Trilogy, where he played his career's most iconic role.

In the Lost Lands cast Dave Bautista in a uniquely familiar role. He plays Boyce, a hunter who joins a witch in her search for a magical gift that would transform their queen to a werewolf. That premise screams adventure fantasy, but Bautista’s character has all the earmarks of a Spaghetti Western cowboy. The actor confirmed this with DiscussingFilm, describing the movie as a “Western stuck in a fantasy world”. He knew he was onboard after reading the opening narration. “I’d been looking to play a cowboy, and all day long I was just thinking ‘Clint Eastwood, what would Clint Eastwood do?’” he explained.

The Dollars Trilogy, Unforgiven, and High Plains Drifter...

Nothing in TV Is a Sure Bet — Except for Taylor Sheridan
Image
A female CIA operative leads a dangerous undercover mission. A just-out-of-jail gangster relocates to the sticks. An oil company fixer deals with cartels, corporate intrigue and his chaotic ex-wife. A real-life cowboy, said to be the inspiration for The Lone Ranger, has his life more fully dramatized. And a man leading a private prison struggles to maintain order.

What all of these shows have in common – besides being massive hits for streaming service Paramount+ — is the involvement of one man: Taylor Sheridan. While TV remains an unpredictable business, Sheridan has become as close as a talent can get to representing a sure thing, launching one success after another. Sheridan often creates, executive produces and writes most of the episodes of every season. If his shows are cattle, he’s the lone cowboy.

And this is a rodeo people love to watch. During its most popular week, “Landman” was the second-most-watched title across streaming,...

Warriors: Abyss Review – Big Battles, Bigger Problems
Image
In Warriors: Abyss, combat channels the energy of Dynasty Warriors, offering players the chance to wade through waves of enemies with high-speed attacks and combos. The core mechanics revolve around easy-to-execute button mashing and charge-based moves.

The integration of a summoning system stands out, adding an extra layer by allowing players to call on other characters from the roster to join in with unique attacks, amplifying the already frenetic pace.

Yet, while the combat initially feels satisfying, it becomes more overwhelming as the game progresses. Area-of-effect (AoE) attacks dominate, with enemies and allies alike filling the screen with flashing effects and damage zones.

The onslaught of visuals can make it difficult to track your own actions or plan your next move. In later stages, combat shifts from being an engaging tactical experience to something akin to a survival game, where avoiding the clutter of AoEs often feels like the main challenge.
