Brooke Shields Reunites With 'Mother of the Bride' Writer for New Acorn TV Murder Mystery Series
Image
Brooke Shields has landed yet another role on television after the success of her Netflix movie Mother of the Bride. However, this latest project also officially reunites her with the writer behind the 2024 romantic comedy to recapture the magic of their surprise megahit. During AMC Networks' presentation on Monday, Acorn TV announced that Shields will lead the new murder mystery series Allie & Andi with Robin Bernheim serving as creator and writer. Production is slated to begin on the six-episode show this fall en route to a release sometime in 2026.

Allie & Andi takes place in a charming little colonial New England town where Shields, who has written several memoirs herself, plays a best-selling novelist roped into a case after forging an unlikely alliance with an aspiring writer and influencer. The two will put their skills to use as they hunt for the killer of a close friend. Little else is known...

Everyone Forgets That Val Kilmer Was One Of The Best Comedy Actors Of The '80s
Image
Movie stardom rarely occurs overnight. Yes, there is typically a film where the star "arrives," but this performance usually comes after a series of supporting turns in movies or TV shows where they've swiped a scene or two. Eddie Murphy rocketed to fame via "48 Hrs.," but this came as no surprise to anyone who'd been watching him kill it on "Saturday Night Live." It might've felt like Peter O'Toole exploded out of nowhere in "Lawrence of Arabia," but his portrayal of a too-credulous guard in "The Day They Robbed the Bank of England" put moviegoers on notice that he was a special talent. And Julia Roberts popped in ensemble films like "Satisfaction" and "Mystic Pizza" before becoming America's sweetheart in "Pretty Woman."

When I rolled out of bed on the morning of June 22, 1984, Val Kilmer did not exist. When I came home from the movies that night, he was one...

‘Almost Paradise’ In Works At Fox; Brooke Shields & David Spade Poised To Star In ‘Blue Lagoon’-Esque Sitcom From Danny Zuker & Kapital
Image
Exclusive: Brooke Shields is ready to revisit the setting that made her a global star in the 1980 movie The Blue Lagoon, with SNL alum David Spade joining her for the ride. Fox is developing Almost Paradise, a multi-camera sitcom from comedy veteran Danny Zuker (Modern Family) and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment.

Written by Zuker, Almost Paradise is described as The Blue Lagoon meets Gilligan’s Island. Its logline reads: Just your everyday, normal married couple facing all the everyday, normal challenges of being stranded on a desert Island for decades. Think Blue Lagoon, the family sitcom.

The idea originated from a general meeting between Shields and Kaplan. The two then approached Spade, on whose NBC sitcom Just Shoot Me! Shields had guest starred and Zuker had worked for two seasons as consulting producer/co-executive producer.

Shields and Spade have no deals for Almost Paradise, which has a two-script order from Fox,...

Powerful Moment Brooke Shields Freed Herself From Mom Teri Shields’ Grip Who Made Her Pose Nude for Playboy at Age 10
Image
Brooke Shields’ childhood success story rings as a cautionary tale because, throughout that time, the former child star was heavily se*ualized. Although she had started modeling at just 11 months old, her life took a drastic turn when she was made to pose naked for Playboy at just 10 years old.

Things went even more haywire when the actress starred in Pretty Baby as a child pr*stitute. A recent TikTok trend dragged those dark days back into the light after Brooke Shields herself pointed it out effectively starting a public discourse on the matter.

To make matters worse, the ones making these decisions for the former child star were none but her mother. She also controlled Shields’ career well into her adulthood, until the actress broke free from her in a swift but powerful move.

Brooke Shields Reveals the Past TV Role That ‘If I Could Do It Again, I’d Do It Tomorrow’

Save for a 1992 guest spot on the Og Quantum Leap and voicing herself in a 1993 episode of The Simpsons, Brooke Shields — best known at the time for the ’80s films The Blue Lagoon and Endless Love, plus Calvin Klein ads — had yet to break out on television through the mid-1990s.

And then she winningly stalked Joey Tribbiani (more accurately, Dr. Drake Ramoray) in Friends‘ January 1996 post-Super Bowl episode.

Gabriel Guevara and Nicole Wallace in À Contre-Sens 2 (2024)
8 Movies to Watch if you liked ‘Your Fault’ on Prime Video
Gabriel Guevara and Nicole Wallace in À Contre-Sens 2 (2024)
Spanish romance “Your Fault” (Culpa Tuya), like its predecessor, “My Fault” (Culpa Mía) has become the latest worthy addition to the ever-so-engaging “guilty-pleasure” genre. Although lacking in terms of cinematic value, the movie makes up for that with its ‘forbidden love” storyline. It is, of course, extra scandalous as the lead male and female happen to be step-siblings. There is always a significant appeal for movies like “Your Fault,” and many of you have certainly looked for similar movies right after finishing the Prime Video hit. For those interested in such films, this is where you find the answer.

1. 365 Days (2020)

Surely many of you have seen this phenomenon that took the world by storm when it suddenly arrived back in 2020. The Polish erotic thriller had it all – an attractive male lead, a beautiful female lead, and a huge dose of steamy romance. Ticking all the boxes required to be...

A New Blu-ray Promises a Return to ‘Paradise’
Image
When Randal Kleiser‘s “The Blue Lagoon” was released in 1981, it was an instant sensation; the beautifully photographed tale of sexual awakening between two teenagers (Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins) set against the backdrop of a tropical island paradise combined prurience and elegance in a potent cocktail that audiences couldn’t get enough of at the time. Its $60-million gross against a $5-million budget couldn’t be ignored — especially by other filmmakers looking to replicate its success.

As was so often the case, Italian filmmakers were particularly aggressive in their plagiarism, with films like the now-forgotten “Due gocce d’acqua salata” blatantly ripping off both the premise and the marketing of “The Blue Lagoon.” But the most well-known “Blue Lagoon” imitator came from an unlikely location for an exotic travelogue centered on sensual exploration: Canada.

“Paradise,” which was released in 1982 by now-defunct distributor Avco-Embassy, was the brainchild of producer Robert Lantos,...

Brooke Shields Set To Auction Calvin Klein Jeans From Controversial Ad Campaign
Image
Brooke Shields, the renowned model and actress, is parting with a significant piece of her past. The 59-year-old star is auctioning the iconic jeans she wore in Calvin Klein’s controversial 1980 campaign as part of Studio Auctions’ event, “From Bombshells to Blasters: An Auction You Can’t Refuse,” scheduled for October 25 to October 27.

Alongside these jeans, Shields will also be auctioning her script from “The Blue Lagoon” and her high school cheerleading sweater.

Reflecting on the auction, Shields shared her feelings, stating, “I am going to be an empty nester! I’m so sad. But now I’m going through all my closets and my things and am ready to give some of my special pieces away, like my Calvin Klein jeans. Can you imagine my waist was ever that small? It’s terrifying! I hope that somebody enjoys these just as much as I have and finds them as meaningful as I do.

The sad news came down earlier today that actress Shelley Duvall died in her sleep of complications related to diabetes. She was 75.

Duvall was one of the most celebrated and accomplished actresses of the Seventies. Director Robert Altman launched her career by giving her one of the lead roles in his 1970 classic Brewster McCloud. He continued to work with...

Remembering the Great Shelley Duvall & The Razzies' Worst Actress Nomination
Image
With the sad recent news that star Shelley Duvall has passed away just after turning 75, we're looking back at a surprising late moment in her phenomenal career that occurred just two years ago. In 2022, her Golden Raspberry Award nomination for The Shining was officially rescinded. While the classic horror film, directed by Stanley Kubrick and based on the Stephen King story, is widely regarded as one of cinema's all-time greatest movies, it was not met with the warmest reception when it was first released. In fact, Kubrick was nominated for Worst Director at the Razzies, with Duvall also nominated for Worst Actress. Those awards went to Robert Greenwald (Xanadu) and Brooke Shield (The Blue Lagoon) respectively, but the nominations have since garnered controversy.

It was Kubrick's behavior and treatment of Duvall during the production of The Shining that ultimately led to the rescission. Kubrick's torment of Duvall was notorious (and...

Zach Galligan's Crush On Phoebe Cates Helped Him Land The Lead In Gremlins
Image
Phoebe Cates nearly ended Zach Galligan's career before she helped launch it.

Galligan was the New York City-born son of a corporate lawyer and a psychologist when, in his late teens, he landed his first major Hollywood audition. The film was Paul Mazursky's contemporized adaptation of William Shakespeare's "The Tempest," and it promised to be a powerhouse actor's showcase what with John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands already cast in the lead roles.

Mazursky and casting director Juliet Taylor were looking for a young actor to play the film's version of Ferdinand, the Prince of Naples who falls in love with Prospero's daughter Miranda. Given the production's pedigree, Galligan was competing against and reading with a who's who of up-and-coming performers, many of whom already had a movie or two under their belt.

One of these up-and-comers was Phoebe Cates, a showbiz kid who'd been on the...

Other actors in the Brat Pack included Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Judd Nelson, Alley Sheedy, Demi Moore, and Molly Ringwald. Brooke Shields New Netflix Movie Misfire Is More Upsetting After Her 3-Year-Old Rom-Com With 75% On Rt
Image
Negative reviews led to a dismal 22% Rotten Tomatoes score for Mother of the Bride. This score is disappointing compared to her well-reviewed 2021 Netflix movie A Castle for Christmas. A Castle for Christmas earned a 75% score largely due to the chemistry between Shields and her co-star Cary Elwes.

Mother of the Bride has been a critical disappointment compared to Brooke Shields' rom-com success from three years ago. The new Netflix original movie, which also stars Miranda Cosgrove, Sean Teale, Chad Michael Murray, Rachael Harris, and Benjamin Bratt, was written by Robin Bernheim, who has previously collaborated with Netflix on the Princess Switch trilogy and A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding. It was directed by Mark Waters, whose most prominent credits include the 2000s teen classics Mean Girls and Freaky Friday.

‘Mother of the Bride’ Duo Brooke Shields, Miranda Cosgrove on Navigating Child Stardom, Finding Their Voices on Set and Rom-Coms
Image
On paper, Brooke Shields and Miranda Cosgrove share a lot in common. They both began their professional careers as child models who went on to find early success as actors. While Shields rose to fame in late-’70s and ’80s films (Pretty Baby, The Blue Lagoon, Endless Love), Cosgrove made a name for herself in the aughts on small-screen sitcoms (iCarly, Drake & Josh). As young women growing up in Hollywood, they both became cultural touchstones for their respective generations but, in turn, were forced to weather intense scrutiny under the limelight.

In that respect, it seems particularly fitting that Shields and Cosgrove would team up to play mother and daughter in Mother of the Bride, which launched Thursday on Netflix. Directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls, Freaky Friday) and written by Robin Bernheim (The Princess Switch), the breezy new romantic comedy follows Shields’ Lana, a widowed single mother and world-renowned...

Finnish director Tiina Lymi decided to “go big” for “Stormskerry Maja,” set in the 19th century. Based on a series of books by Anni Blomqvist, it has been selected for International Film Festival Rotterdam and Goteborg.

“It had to be done this way. It’s about life and death, love, sorrow and lust. Big emotions. I really respect my producers’ decision to commit to this budget. €4 million is nothing in the U.S., but it’s a lot in Finland.”

In the film – produced by Markus Selin, Jukka Helle and Hanna Virolainen for Solar Films and sold by Picture Tree Intl. – a young peasant woman, married off to a man she barely knows, moves to a remote island. Her new environment isn’t exactly welcoming, but Maja falls for it quickly – and for her new husband Janne.

Why Brooke Shields Ignored Phone Call From Blue Lagoon Director
Image
Brooke Shields ignored a call from The Blue Lagoon director, Randal Kleiser, after her documentary shed light on her sexual exploitation by older directors. Shields felt that she was objectified and used by the men she worked with in her younger years, who saw her as a commodity rather than a person. Shields took charge of her own story, attending Princeton University, writing autobiographies, and using her experiences to help others through her podcast.

Brooke Shields appeared in The Blue Lagoon in 1980 and decades after, she admits she ignores calls from the movie's director, Randal Kleiser. The Blue Lagoon is a controversial '80s romance movie that tells the story of two children marooned on an island in the South Pacific. Emmeline (Shields) and Richard (Christopher Atkins) progress through puberty and their sexual awakening on the island, eventually conceiving a child together and determining they like the simple life they have found.

‘Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields’ Filmmaker Lana Wilson On Making It About Mom – Crew Call Podcast

After shooting the Taylor Swift documentary Miss Americana, deconstructing another pop icon in Brooke Shields was an organic segue for filmmaker Lana Wilson. The director is up for a Primetime Emmy nomination in Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program for the Hulu/ABC News docuseries Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields.

Wilson’s agent first brought the opportunity of a Brooke Shields doc to her attention after the concept was in the works via Alexandra Wentworth and George Stephanopoulos, who have a production deal at ABC News. Wilson tells us why the time was finally prime for Shields to tell all.

Shields proved a documentarian’s dream subject, not holding back from her roller-coaster ride high of being a 1980s starlet in such dicey movies such as Pretty Baby, The Blue Lagoon and Endless Love to tabloid headlines as Andre Agassi’s wife and Michael Jackson’s Grammys date. Wilson wanted...

Which Actor Has Won the Most Razzies?
Image
The Academy Awards get the most prestige, but a certain joy comes from seeing which films and actors come out on top for the anti-Oscars, the Razzies, aka the Golden Raspberry Awards. For fans of "so bad it's good" cinema it's the highlight of the year, drawing attention to must-see movie massacres since 1980. That first year saw the Village People pseudo-documentary Can't Stop the Music take out such low-lights as The Nude Bomb and Raise the Titanic for Worst Film, Neil Diamond take home Worst Actor for his role in The Jazz Singer, beating formidable flops like Bruce Jenner (Can't Stop the Music) and Flash Gordon's Sam J. Jones, and a tight race for Worst Actress fall to Brooke Shields in The Blue Lagoon. Since then, the Razzies has seen a wide array of (not) talent come away with awards: some one-off winners, some surprising winners, and some names...

Brooke Sheilds takes control of the narrative by sharing her story in her own words in the Hulu documentary Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, from director Lana Wilson.

Brooke Shields says she ignored Blue Lagoon director’s call after accusing him of selling her ‘sexual awakening’

Brooke Shields revealed that The Blue Lagoon director Randal Kleiser has tried to contact her after the release of her new Hulu documentary Pretty Baby.

In the documentary, the actor and supermodel accused Kleiser of wanting “to sell my sexual awakening.”

Shields starred in the 1980 film alongside Christopher Atkins. Aged 14 and 18 at the time of filming, respectively, Shields and Atkins played cousins who were stranded on a deserted island.

As the characters matured into adulthood, they fell in love and had a child together.

Appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show on Tuesday (11 April), Shields was asked whether any of the male directors she mentions in the documentary have reached out to her.

“I saw [Kleiser’s] name on my phone, and I was like, ‘Oh, what do I do?’ and I let it go to voicemail,” Shields said. “Because I was like, ‘I want to see what the tone is.’ He wants to chat.

Brooke Shields revealed that “The Blue Lagoon” director Randal Kleiser reached out to her after documentary “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields” aired on Hulu.

“They wanted to make it a reality show,” Shields says in the documentary about “The Blue Lagoon” and other films she made as a teen actor. “They wanted to sell my actual sexual awakening. The irony was, I wasn’t in touch with any of my own sexuality.”

“The Blue Lagoon” stars Shields opposite Christopher Atkins. The two actors play teens stranded on a tropical island who experience puberty together and fall in love. The film is one of many that Shields calls out in the documentary for exploiting her at such a young age. Other...

“Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields,” a documentary about Brooke Shields and the sexual objectification she endured as a child actor, arrives on Hulu today.

In the two-part documentary, which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, the actor and model opens up for the first time about her earliest experiences in Hollywood. The film tracks her rise as a child advertising model to her sexualization in movies, starting at age 12, in “Pretty Baby” (1978), and then at 15, in “The Blue Lagoon” (1980).

“I spent my life owing people things and doing whatever they wanted,” Shields says in a new teaser dropped Wednesday morning. “I finally asked myself, ‘What will I be if I don’t allow that anymore?'”

Shields’ experience with older men on set as a child is a common theme in her recollections.

Henry Winkler at an event for Click (2006)
The jokes will extend well past April 1st on HBO and HBO Max.

“Barry” returns for its fourth and final season. After the shocking Season 3 finale which saw Barry (Billy Hader) getting arrested and Cousineau (Henry Winkler) being hailed as a hero, there will be plenty of consequences for both. The dark comedy premieres on April 16 with two episodes.

“A Black Lady Sketch Show” will also bring plenty of laughs when it returns for its fourth season. The sketch comedy series premieres April 14.

On the drama side, the limited series “Love and Death” premieres on April 27. It’s based on the true story of Candy (Elizabeth Olsen) and Pat Montgomery (Patrick Fugit) and Betty (Lily Rabe) and Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons) – two churchgoing couples enjoying their small-town Texas life… until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up an axe.

HBO Max New Releases: April 2023
Image
With its list of new releases for April 2023, HBO Max is premiering the final episodes of two major shows.

First up is the continuation of Titans season 4 on April 13. Returning after a four month hiatus, these next six episodes will be the last go around for HBO Max’s gritty live-action DC series. Arriving three days later on HBO proper is the fourth and final season of Barry. Bill Hader and the rest of the Barry team wrote themselves into a fascinating corner with the conclusion of season 3. And judging by the first teasers for season 4, this final batch of episodes will indeed catch up with our favorite actor/hitman in prison.

Other TV shows of note this month include the Pete Davidson-starring animated series Fired on Mars on April 20 (light ’em up) the the Elizabeth Olsen-starring true crime story Love & Death on April 27.

‘Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields’ Review: A Timely Doc About Hollywood, Hyper-Sexualization and a Star’s Resilience
Image
Using the genre trappings of the superhero origin story, Amazon’s new drama The Power explores society’s preoccupation with and fear of pubescent girls. The series, which I’m not actually reviewing here, delves into how vast corners of the law and organized religion have been unconsciously or very consciously advanced to deny those girls agency. In the case of The Power, that agency arrives not in the form of legislation or a Supreme Court verdict, but as an evolutionary ability to generate and wield electricity. The patriarchy is in for a shock!

If you prefer this topic to be treated with more text and less subtext, Lana Wilson’s Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields moves to Hulu after a January premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. The two-part documentary — 136 minutes in total, but surely better suited to have been edited into a 120-minute feature — uses Shields’ alternately unsettling and...

“It was time because of the team, because my children’s age, and because of all the work that I have done to really find belief and confidence in my own self,” shared Shields, who found herself wiping away “happy tears” when she hit the carpet, as she was overwhelmed by the magnitude of the evening.

“At my age, this is a different time, it’s a different era, and I was ready to share [my story] and ready to be brutally honest,” Shields said. “Otherwise, it wouldn’t have been authentic...

Image
In the final season of HBO Max’s “Barry,” premiering on April 16, Barry’s arrest for the murder of Cousineau’s girlfriend leads to a shocking conclusion. Henry Winkler stars as Cousineau, Barry’s acting teacher and the man forced to confront the reality of his former student.

Watch the “Barry” season 4 trailer:

Another crime story will come to HBO Max in April, although this one is based on a true story. “Love & Death” revolves around the murder of Betty Gore (played by Lily Rabe) in a small Texas town in 1980. Her husband Alan (Jesse Plemons) has an affair with Candy (Elizabeth Olsen), who attends their church. Suddenly, the thrills turn deadly. Candy picks up an ax, whacks her rival over 40 times, and then claims self-defense. The new...

The two-part film will focus on the actor’s rise as a child star and the sexualisation she was subject to aged 15 in 1980’s The Blue Lagoon.
