How To Train Your Dragon: Why The New Fishlegs Actor Looks So Familiar
Image
Director Dean DeBlois may have brought the animated "How to Train Your Dragon" trilogy to a close back in 2019, but he's since returned to the franchise with a live-action remake of the 2010 animated film he initially co-directed with Chris Sanders. This new interpretation of the beloved family movie doesn't stray too far from the original film and often ends up being a shot-for-shot remake (albeit one that's a half hour longer by virtue of some extended sequences involving the future dragon slayers of Berk). In his review, /Film's Ethan Anderton described the remake as a fun albeit largely unnecessary venture that pretty much plays the hits. It doesn't really matter though, as the movie is already set to receive a sequel in 2027.

While "The Black Phone" star Mason Thames may take front and center as Hiccup (the awkward Viking who learns to tame and befriend the Night Fury known as...

10 Movie Trailers From the Last 5 Years That Completely Ruined Big Surprises
Image
Modern movie trailers are often considered to be filled with spoilers and reveals fans wish they weren't aware of by the time the movie releases. Some viewers elect to even go to movies without even seeing the trailer anymore because they've been known to spoil so much.

Although many trailers get away with what they include, some unfortunately spoil too much. While that doesn't always take away from the enjoyment of films, some trailers simply give away their biggest and best reveals right in the marketing.

Fans Knew X-23 Was Returning Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)

Of all the things that could've been spoiled in the trailers for Deadpool & Wolverine, a massively anticipated blockbuster of a returning franchise and introduction to the MCU, it's shocking that there was only one big spoiler. Jeannot Szwarc obituary
Christine Freeman and Bruce in Les Dents de la mer, 2ᵉ partie (1978)
Director whose big screen credits include Jaws 2, Supergirl and Santa Claus: The Movie alongside a 50-year career in television

Jeannot Szwarc, who has died aged 85, directed Jaws 2 (1978), Supergirl (1984) and Santa Claus: The Movie (1985). This could be described as a hat-trick, but only if one were talking about own goals.

Though Szwarc was a successful television director of more than 50 years’ standing, with multiple episodes under his belt of series such as Kojak and The Rockford Files in the 1970s and Ally McBeal and Grey’s Anatomy in this century, his film career was another matter.

Santa Claus: The Movie and Jaws 2 director Jeannot Szwarc dies, aged 85
Jeannot Szwarc
French director Jeannot Szwarc has died, it’s been announced. He was 85 years old.

Understandably, the film world is mourning the loss overnight of one of its true greats, David Lynch. Lost a little though is that a fine genre director also passed away.

French director Jeannot Szwarc died on Wednesday 15th January, it was announced, at the age of 85.

Born in Paris, Swarc moved to America and cut his teeth on popular television shows such as Kojak and The Rockford Files. But for the movie-going generation of the 1970s and 1980s, it was his feature films that drew the most attention.

His big break was arguably 1978’s Jaws 2 (pictured), getting the nod when Steven Spielberg declined the opportunity to return to the sequel (and after original director John Hancock was fired). Perhaps his most acclaimed American film followed, 1980’s Somewhere In Time, starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour.

Forget the Batcave, Alright? DC Comics Just Introduced Us To the Bat Castle
Image
Warning: Contain Potential Spoilers for Batman / Santa Claus: Silent Knight Returns #5

The Batcave is undoubtedly Batman’s most iconic base of operations. However, this holiday season, the Dark Knight was gifted a full-blown castle, becoming one of his coolest 'bases' to date—especially considering it aligns with Bruce’s unique taste in decorating, something Superman himself is quick to point out in a humorous moment.

The center of the castle is particularly notable, as the stonework and towers form the shape of a bat’s face...

Jeff Parker, Lukas Ketner, Michele Bandini, and Michele Bandini’s Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight Returns #5 marks the epic conclusion of the holiday-themed, weekly mini-series, bringing DC’s premier heroes together with Santa Claus as they race against the clock to defeat the Silent Knight—an overpowered villain with the ability to drain his victims of their powers and life forces.

50 Classic Holiday Movies Gallery: From ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ ‘A Christmas Story’ To ‘Die Hard’ And ‘The Holiday’
Image
The concept of the holiday movie began back in 1898 with G.A. Smith’s pioneering silent film Santa Claus. The first of its kind to show the depiction of Santa that only runs just shy over a minute.

Since then Hollywood has belted out an array of films that have either been true to the genre such as A Christmas Story; The Holiday; Miracle On 34th Street; Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey or films like Die Hard; Brazil, and Gremlins that have teetered on the edge of identifying as a holiday film.

Then there are the anti-holiday movies and the Christmas horrors. Subgenres of their own like the slasher Silent Night, Deadly Night, Black Christmas, and Christmas Evil, a John Waters favorite, so you are inclined to know what demented viewing you are in for.

Poll: What’s Your Favorite Christmas Movie?
Image
’Twas the weekend before Christmas… With the holiday season upon us, many of us are starting to revisit some of our of Christmas favourites. I actually went to see a 4K re-release of the original Black Christmas last night here in Montreal. There’s something comforting upon returning to our old favourites every year, whether they be traditional Christmas classics, or perhaps something a little more modern, like Die Hard, which, despite many claiming otherwise, has totally established itself as a Christmas classic over the years.

Whatever the case, there are certainly Loads of Christmas movies, with everything from old-time classics like It’s A Wonderful Life or some of the many versions of A Christmas Carol (the Alistair Sim version is the best Imo), or something like Love Actually, which is virtually inescapable at this time of the year.

With that in mind, we’d love to figure out just...

Horror Master John Carpenter Almost Directed One Of The Worst Christmas Movies Ever Made
Image
We've finally reached the time of the year when everyone dedicates an unnecessary amount of time to arguing over the same, cyclical topics ad nauseam — like whether or not "Die Hard" is a Christmas movie or what film deserves the biggest gift under the tree as the best Christmas movie of all time. Just as hotly debated is what constitutes the "worst" Christmas movie of all time, which is a lot harder to determine depending on what you deem "bad." One film that is frequently in the running for the dishonor is 1985's "Santa Claus: The Movie," directed by Jeannot Szwarc, who also gave us "Supergirl" and the equally polarizing "Jaws 2."

On paper, "Santa Claus: The Movie" has a lot going for it. It's about a man named Claus (David Huddleston) who delivers toys in his small village, eventually becoming Santa Claus after crossing paths with an elf toy-maker,...

‘Red One’ Review: A Ho Ho Ho Hum Holiday Comedy
Image
Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans in ‘Red One’ (Photo Credit: Amazon MGM Studios)

Over the years, there have been lots of films about Father Christmas, including Miracle on 34th Street, The Santa Clause, and Santa Claus: The Movie, just to name a few. Add to that list Red One, which asks: What if someone kidnapped good ole Saint Nick?

The film starts with the real Santa (J.K. Simmons) posing as a mall Santa in Philadelphia, accompanied by his trusted bodyguard/head of security, Callum (Dwayne Johnson). After talking to some wide-eyed children about what they want for Christmas, Santa – code named “Red One” by his security team – heads off on his supersonic sleigh and giant magical reindeer to return to the North Pole.

Once back home, Santa and Callum start working out to get ready for the big night. This will be Callum’s last trip with the jolly old...

If You Thought Black Adam Was a Box Office Failure Then Red One Will be a Bigger Disappointment For Dwayne Johnson’s Fans
Image
Known for his larger-than-life roles and box office dominance, Dwayne Johnson is likely headed toward another cinematic misstep with his upcoming Christmas action-comedy Red One. Starring The Rock alongside Chris Evans, the film promises a festive adventure as an E.L.F. operative and a bounty hunter join forces to find Santa Claus and save Christmas.

Despite its unique premise and star-studded cast, early reviews and box office projections suggest that Johnson’s latest action comedy might struggle to jingle the box office bells or impress critics.

Could Red One be Another Setback For Dwayne Johnson?

Dwayne Johnson is taking on the role of Callum Drift, the head of North Pole security for Santa Claus, in his latest holiday action-comedy, Red One. The film follows him teaming up with a tracker and bounty hunter, Jack O’Malley, to rescue the kidnapped Santa Claus and save Christmas.

What Happened to Superman IV: The Quest For Peace?
Image
Unlike Superman and Superman II, Superman III didn’t even bother teasing the next installment in the franchise. Really, by the time that movie’s end credits hit, did anyone even want another entry? Hadn’t the Salkinds done enough damage to the Man of Steel? And yet, as we all know, a fourth installment in the Superman series did indeed hit theaters…with a nearly unmatched thud.

If you remember from our previous instalment of What Happened to This Movie?!, Superman III was plagued with all sorts of problems both on and off the screen. So what happened this time around? Turns out, the series would be facing its greatest battles yet, with the rights being passed to another studio, its star only signing on so he could finance another movie altogether and the budget getting chopped in more than half!

And so, let’s suit up one more...

John Carpenter reviews his own movies on Letterboxd
John Carpenter
Genre filmmaking legend John Carpenter has recently taken to Letterboxd to write some frank reviews of his own movies and others. The results are incredible.

Having made some of the greatest genre movies ever made, John Carpenter has quite deservedly shifted down a gear or two over the past decade or so. These days, he’s keeping himself busy with his music, playing videogames (he really loves Fallout 76), holding the occasional mercurial interview with the press – and, as it turns out, writing the odd review on Letterboxd.

Brilliantly, as spotted by Twitter’s Haunted Hippie (via our own John Moore), Carpenter has even cast his jaded eye over his own movies. Take Halloween II, for example, which he’s long admitted he wrote for the money. Here’s his Letterboxd review:

They paid me more money than I had ever seen to write a sequel to a film that did not need one.

Cheers Tapped John Lithgow To Play Frasier But He Declined Instantly
Image
When "Cheers" returned to NBC's airwaves for its third season, viewers were desperate to see how bartender Sam Malone (Ted Danson) and Diane Chambers (Shelley Long) had handled their breakup at the conclusion of the previous season's finale. Had they moved on or possibly reconciled?

The answer was a little more complicated than perhaps many fans expected.

Recovering alcoholic Sam was back on the sauce and carousing with self-destructive abandon. Diane was, as ever, Diane, but she couldn't bear to see Sam in such a rough way. She didn't want to get back together with him, certainly not while he was scraping rock bottom, but she still cared about her ex. She needed to see him in at least a semi-functional state. She needed to get him help. And she believed she knew just the man who could throw him a lifeline.

That man, of course, was psychiatrist Frasier Crane.

DC's Strongest Anti-Vampire Team Includes 1 Underrated Teen Titan
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight #2!

Miss Martian, Black Canary, and Green Arrow team up to creatively defeat vampires using their powers in Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight #2. The trio's strategy involves Miss Martian shapeshifting, Green Arrow shooting wooden arrows, and Black Canary using her sonic scream. This showcases how superheroes can use their existing powers in unique ways to fight vampires, and suggests Miss Martian has the potential to lead her own supernatural team.

An unexpected member of the Teen Titans helps make up one of DC's best vampire-hunting squads. The Teen Titan in question is M'gann M'orzz — also known as Miss Martian, the niece of Martian Manhunter. Still a relatively new character in the DC Universe with just under two decades of existence under her belt, Miss Martian has made a significant impact within the Dcu, including by recently becoming a romantic item with Superboy.

Santa Claus Officially Declares 1 Bat-Family Hero "Naughty" - & Sadly, He's Right
Image
Damian Wayne, the fifth Robin, has been declared naughty by both Santa Claus and Krampus, signaling a less-than-jolly fate for him this holiday season. Being on Santa's naughty list has serious consequences for Damian, as he is kidnapped by Krampus himself. The outcome of this situation remains uncertain. Damian's fate may hinge on his ability to show compassion and kindness towards Krampus, but this proves to be a challenge for him given his initial reaction to being grabbed.

Warning: Potential spoilers for Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight #3!Santa Claus has officially declared Robin naughty, making it abundantly clear that, despite Damian Wayne's character growth over the years, the fifth Robin has still managed to accumulate enough mischievous deeds to warrant a less than-stellar spot on the jolly saint's list. And truth be told, Santa's assessment isn't entirely unfounded – Damian has been hilariously naughty this year.

Santa Claus: The Movie Is Secrectly One of the Most Psychedelically Accurate Films Ever Made
Image
Some movies from our childhood fail to live up to the size of their memory, but rarely, we rediscover an old movie we always knew was ugly and find it still ugly but also shocking or revelatory. Santa Claus: The Movie is one such secretly subtextual movie. The first act is sort of incredible, with ‘80s movie magic, including matte paintings of the North Pole, massive sets for the castle-like home of the elves, and reindeer puppets that still hold up to today’s effects. Acts two and three turn into a story about one of the elves who runs away, and it becomes Dudley Moore: The Movie.

With Christmas just one week (and one day) away, we wanted to ask you, the people, what your favorite Christmas Movie is? It doesn’t have to be the movie you think is the best, just the one that you eagerly anticipate watching every year. Is it the timeless tale of an angel getting its wings in It’s A Wonderful Life? or perhaps the under-appreciated (and genuinely hilarious) R rated The Night Before is how you kick off your holiday season?

Do you look forward to seeing Jack Skellington discover the true meaning of Christmas in the Christmas Movie Classic The Nightmare Before Christmas or watching Kevin McCallister take down the Wet/ Sticky Bandits in Home Alone 1&2 or perhaps seeing Clark W. Griswold struggle to have the perfect family Christmas in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is more your speed? Whatever film fills you with yuletide glee, we would love...

Official 4K Restoration Trailer for UK Classic 'Santa Claus: The Movie'
Image
"This year he Really Is coming to town!" Studiocanal UK has revealed a new trailer for Santa Claus: The Movie, to promote their 4K re-release. "We're delighted to announce that a magical new 4k restoration of the perennial Christmas Classic, Santa Claus: The Movie, from director Jeannot Szwarc will return to cinemas this festive period" starting in late November. The film originally opened in 1985 for the holidays and became a favorite worldwide, though more commonly in the UK than the US. It's not the same as The Santa Clause with Tim Allen, or many of the other animated classics. Santa Claus: The Movie stars David Huddleston as Santa, Dudley Moore, John Lithgow, Judy Cornwell, Jeffrey Kramer, and many others. The legend of Santa Claus is put in jeopardy when an unscrupulous toy manufacturer attempts to take over Christmas. This is definitely a good one to catch up with and show...

The Best Muppet Show Guest Stars Based on Geek Cred
Image
The Muppet Show is one of the most iconic family-friendly TV series of all time. Since its original run began in 1976, the flagship series for Jim Henson's creations has been the standard by which all subsequent Muppet projects are judged. Assuming the format of a comedy-variety show, The Muppet Show quickly became as famous for its celebrity guests as it was for its quirky, colorful cast of characters.

With a five-season run of 120 episodes, The Muppet Show hosted stars from across the entertainment spectrum. Celebrity performers ranging from Vaudevillians to music icons to film and television idols made their way to the Muppet's stage over the years. It should come as no surprise, then, that some of these notable guests were also known for their contributions to geek culture.

When it comes to Christmas movies, The Holiday has a lot to answer for
Image
Christmas – the Most Wonderful Time of the Year – has gifted humanity some truly awful stuff over the past 2,022 years. Bitterly boiled sprouts. Brexit arguments around the dinner table. Mrs Brown’s Boys specials. But very few reach the depths of the festive season’s most cringe-inducing nadir: the sight and sound of Cameron Diaz in the 2006 romantic comedy The Holiday belting out a drunken rendition of The Killers’ “Mr Brightside”.

Ordinarily, that’s the exclusive domain of beered-up dads, and usually an expression of having no discernible taste in music. In The Holiday, it’s an expression of a sister doing it for herself in a man-free zone – until Jude Law appears at the door and gives a wounded, single-dad sob story. At which point Diaz’s scorned sister realises that she needs a man after all.

Yes, welcome to The Holiday, an interminable Christmassy non-treat (all two hours and...

8 Best Christmas Movies On Hulu
Image
Though Hulu might not be the first streaming platform audiences would think of when it comes to Christmas movies, it holds its own against some of the bigger services. Disney+ might have Home Alone and HBO Max might have Miracle on 34th Street, but between some original content, a couple of 'so bad they're good' movies, and soon-to-be classics, Hulu is a major player in the streaming world when it comes to Christmas flicks.

Update: 2022/12/01 13:34 Est By Stephen Barker

The holiday season is now in full swing and the rotation of classic Christmas movies that are watched by millions of households annually has started. While Hulu doesn't have all that many festive classics, the streaming service still has a lot to offer when it comes to holiday movies with unique concepts. David Harbour in Violent Night (2022)
‘Violent Night’ Review: David Harbour’s Santa Delivers a Comedic Mayhem Miracle
David Harbour in Violent Night (2022)
“Violent Night” is one of the Yuletide season’s most delightful surprises, not just for what it gets right but also for the many ways the whole production could have gone very, very wrong.

For starters, it’s a movie about Santa Claus, and for every “Miracle on 34th Street,” the history of Christmas movies is littered with tales of Saint Nick that could make a moviegoer hate the holiday. (“Santa Claus Conquers the Martians” or “Santa Claus: The Movie” leap to mind.)

It’s also a film that demands to be taken seriously on its own merits even as it blatantly references other Christmas classics — first and foremost, “Die Hard” and “Home Alone” — and it dares to mix bloody, hard-r action violence with a sentimental subplot about a young girl’s unwavering belief in Santa Claus. That it gets away with all of this and stays gorily entertaining and...
