‘John Candy: I Like Me’ Lifts the Lid on the Comedy Legend’s Anxiety
Image
Don’t go into John Candy: I Like Me expecting any dirt on the comedian. His fellow Second City cast member Bill Murray jokes in the documentary’s first few minutes that he wishes he had something negative to say in order to make the movie more interesting (the best he can do is an anecdote about Candy “milking” a scene during a play).

But that doesn’t mean that the doc, which just premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, doesn’t explore the darker aspects of the beloved comedy star’s life.

Most of I Like Me is a fairly standard biographical documentary, telling Candy’s story through talking head interviews,...

‘John Candy: I Like Me’ Review: Colin Hanks’ Doc Portrait Pays Poignant Tribute to a Comic Icon’s Life and Legacy
Image
John Candy is having a bit of a moment. While it has been more than three decades since the beloved Canadian comic actor died tragically too soon, at the age of 43, of a heart attack, his legacy continues to burn brightly. Last year marked the 40th anniversary of Splash, the film that really jump-started Candy’s big screen career; next month sees the release of the biography, John Candy: A Life in Comedy, penned by Paul Myers (brother of Mike); and this week the Toronto International Film Festival kicked off its 50th anniversary edition with the premiere of John Candy: I Like Me, a big-hearted documentary that’s as embracing and generous of spirit as the man himself. Co-produced by Ryan Reynolds, it launches on Amazon Prime Video starting October 10.

Directed by Colin Hanks, and featuring testimonials and reminiscences from those who knew him best — family, friends and colleagues including Dan Aykroyd,...

Ryan Reynolds’ ‘John Candy: I Like Me’ Opens Toronto Film Festival With Nostalgia, Laughs and Lots of Canadian Pride
Image
Oh, Canada!

The Toronto International Film Festival kicked off its 50th edition Thursday evening with the world premiere of “John Candy: I Like Me,” a documentary that celebrates the life and career of the titular funnyman, who died of a heart attack in 1994 at the age of 43.

The opening night gala leaned in heavily on Canadian pride, which is not often the case at TIFF. But “I Like Me,” which Amazon is releasing on Oct. 10, offered plenty of regional flavor for the hometown crowd. Candy was a local hero, having grown up in Toronto before his breakout on Sctv. He eventually became one of the most in-demand comedy stars of his generation, thanks to such films as “Stripes,” “Splash,” “Spaceballs,” “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” “Uncle Buck” and “Cool Runnings.” Fellow Canadian Ryan Reynolds, who hails from Vancouver and produced the doc, was in attendance, celebrating another one of the Great...

‘John Candy: I Like Me’ Review: Toronto Opens With an Overly Affectionate Homage to a Hometown Comedy Hero
Image
“John Candy: I Like Me” is the kind of glowing celebrity tribute you expect to get at a beloved star’s funeral, not all these years after their death (it opens with Dan Aykroyd’s eloquent eulogy for his friend and closes with Catherine O’Hara’s). But in the three decades since that big, lovable star’s passing, the affection his friends and family held for Candy has only deepened, to the extent that Bill Murray jokes, “I wish I had more bad things to say about him,” in the film’s first interview.

Kicking off the 50th-anniversary edition of the Toronto Film Festival, the made-for-Amazon documentary doesn’t need dirt, but it could’ve used more drama. Director Colin Hanks collects fond remembrances from an impressive roster of A-listers, including Steve Martin, Martin Short, Macaulay Culkin, director Chris Columbus, “Sctv” co-founder Andrew Alexander, Second City Toronto colleagues O’Hara and Eugene Levy,...

Ryan Reynolds & Colin Hanks Teamed Up To Honor One Of The Best Actors We Lost Too Soon
Image
John Belushi. Gilda Radner. Phil Hartman. Chris Farley. John Candy. Robin Williams. These are just some of the comedic geniuses we lost far too soon. Several of these bright lights of hilarity have been honored in the form of various documentaries and retrospectives honoring the memorable work they did before passing away. But now, it's John Candy's turn.

This fall sees the release of a documentary produced by fellow Canadian star Ryan Reynolds and directed by "Orange County" and "The Offer" actor Colin Hanks, who has a unique relationship with the "Uncle Buck" and "Planes, Trains & Automobiles" star thanks to his father Tom Hanks' big screen history with the comedy legend.

You Won’t Watch John Candy Movies the Same Way After Seeing Colin Hanks’ New Documentary
Image
On the surface, yes, the idea of making a documentary on the life of John Candy seems like a pretty great idea — I mean, who doesn’t love John Candy? — but as director Colin Hanks points out, well, wait, not so fast.

Now, let’s quickly note that Colin Hanks would know what he’s talking about because he, in fact, did make a documentary about the life of John Candy. And the problem that presented itself was, yes, everyone does love John Candy. As much as this is a man whose life should be celebrated, watching his friends and family talk about how great he is doesn’t necessarily make a riveting narrative for a film.

What Hanks deftly does with his “John Candy: I Like Me” is frame his film around Candy’s anxiety about his own mortality. John Candy’s father died from a heart attack when Candy was only five,...

TIFF 50: 10 movies we can’t wait to see at this year’s fest!
Image
It’s the most glorious time of the year! The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is kicking off once again, and for the sixteenth (!) year in a row, I’ll be there on behalf of JoBlo.com. My goal: hit at least twenty films over the festival’s run, which means I’ll be cranking out reviews pretty regularly. But among the countless titles playing this year—TIFF’s fiftieth edition, no less—here are the ten I’m most excited to see:

The Smashing Machine

Studio Execs Wanted Ron Howard to Make ‘Splash’ Without the Mermaid
Image
Do movie studio executives go out of their way to become punchlines?

Sometimes, it must seem that way to directors like Ron Howard. He remembers the pushback he got when he and Brian Glazer were shopping their film, Splash, the 1984 comedy in which everyman Tom Hanks falls in love with Darryl Hannah’s sweet mermaid. “We were going to every studio, they were all turning us down,” Howard told People. “And one said, ‘Does it really have to be a mermaid?’”

It was kinda like asking if Weekend at Bernie's really needed the dead guy. “We didn’t go with that company,” Howard said. “We decided, yeah, it really should be a mermaid.

Ron Howard Reveals the Shocking Note That Nearly Killed Splash
Image
Decades after struggling to produce Splash (1984), Ron Howard is opening up about the notes that nearly killed his movie. It was led by a young Tom Hanks (Allen Bauer) in his second theatrical role, alongside Daryl Hannah (Madison), Eugene Levy (Dr. Walter Kornbluth), and other stars. Howard served as the director, while Brian Grazer was a writer and producer.

Mixing comedy with a romance, the movie featured a man falling in love with a mermaid years before Disney's The Little Mermaid entered theaters. Splash proved to be a box office hit, earning nearly $70 million against an $11 million budget. Unfortunately, it nearly failed to enter theaters at all.

In an interview with Vulture,...

Ron Howard's Directorial Debut Was An Underrated Crime Comedy Fans Need To Watch
Image
Ron Howard began his career in Hollywood back in 1956 when he was only two years old. He appeared in a Western called "Frontier Woman" playing ... well, playing a two-year-old. This led to a prolific on-screen career as a child performer, credited as Ronny Howard, appearing in films like "The Music Man" and "Village of the Giants," and achieving great fame on TV, acting in shows like "The Twilight Zone," "Dennis the Menace," and "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis." His big break came when he played the young Opie Taylor in the 1960 sitcom "The Andy Griffith Show." Howard never stopped working, appearing in just about every hit TV series of the 1960s. By the 1970s, as a twentysomething, he was starring in hit films like "American Graffiti" and leading hit shows like "Happy Days."

Because he was raised in the business, Howard knew how to cut a deal. In 1974, he...

Ron Howard recalls the push and pull of taking over Solo: A Star Wars Story and the advice he got from George Lucas

Nowadays, it’s challenging to keep pace with the evolution of the Star Wars franchise. It used to be as easy as waxing rhapsodic about the Og trilogy, then discourse about the prequels introduced a whole new era of toxic fandom to the mix. Disney is making inroads with titles like The Mandalorian, Skeleton Crew, and Andor. Still, one project remains a hotbed of discourse: Ron Howard’s 2018 spinoff, Solo: A Star Wars Story, starring Alden Ehrenreich as the young, scruffy nerf-herder Han Solo. Howard recently chatted with Vulture about many films throughout his storied career, from Splash to Hillbilly Elegy. During the talk, Howard opened up about the confusion surrounding Solo and how a random breakfast with Kathleen Kennedy in Paris led to him taking the project over from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

When asked to explain Solo’s production, Howard told Vulture’s Bilge Ebiri that the...

Jim Lovell’s Cause of Death: Tom Hanks Pays Tribute to Apollo 13 Astronaut
Image
Jim Lovell, the great American astronaut, naval aviator, test pilot, and mechanical engineer, passed away on August 7, 2025. And Tom Hanks, for one, didn’t take long to pay tribute to the 1970 lunar mission commander, having embodied him three decades ago in his critically praised adventure-action flick from 1995, Apollo 13.

While he managed to survive the near-catastrophic explosion of the Apollo 13 spacecraft as it approached the moon all those years ago in April 1970, Lovell gave in to death at 97 on Thursday, in Lake Forest, Illinois. This was confirmed by his family in a statement to NASA, per the New York Times. The cause of his death, though, has not been revealed yet.

Exclusive: Eddie Murphy will continue his long collaborative relationship with Imagine Entertainment. He’s set to star in Playas Ball, a comedy that will be directed by Kyle Newacheck, who just helmed the Netflix hit Happy Gilmore 2. They’re keeping the logline under wraps, but it’s described to me as an action comedy about the undead.

Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody will produce with Eddie Murphy Productions’ Eddie Murphy and Charisse Hewitt-Webster. Myles Murphy is scripting.

Eddie Murphy has just opened in The Pickup, the Amazon MGM comedy he stars in with Pete Davidson, Keke Palmer and Eva Longoria. The film just dropped on Amazon Prime.

It has been 40 years since Grazer and director Ron Howard formed Imagine after teaming on the hit Splash. Murphy has been a regular contributor to the company’s ascension, headlining films that include The Nutty Professor franchise, Bowfinger, Life,...

Watch Ana de Armas and Sydney Sweeney in New Trailer for Ron Howard's 'Eden'
Image
After years in development, the Ron Howard-directed survival thriller Edenis nearing its theatrical debut — and now it has a new trailer to entice audiences with fresh official glimpses of a star-studded cast trying to build a new life in the untamed wilderness of the Galápagos Islands.

Howard probably isn't the first filmmaker you think of when dreaming up directors for a pulse-pounding story of survival, but when he stepped behind the camera for Eden, he certainly had no shortage of talent to work with: The film's ensemble cast is led by Ana de Armas, Daniel Brühl, Vanessa Kirby, Jude Law, and Sydney Sweeney, all working from a screenplay by Tetris writer Noah Pink. But even all that star power wasn't enough to keep the production from suffering a series of delays, primarily due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which hit a matter of months after Howard boarded the project in...

The Time Tom Hanks Fought Fonzie
Image
There’s barely an entry on Tom Hanks’ IMDb page before you get to his 1982 appearance on Happy Days as a guy brave enough to challenge the Fonz to a fight. Little did Hanks know that the episode would foreshadow real-life animosity.

First, Happy Days: The sitcom, now in its 10th season, was getting long in the tooth. What better way to ignite viewer interest than to invite Hanks, a budding star from fellow ABC sitcom Bosom Buddies, to appear as a childhood rival of Arthur Fonzarelli? Hanks played Dwayne Twitchell, shoved off the swing set by Fonzie in the third grade, and sworn to revenge ever since.

Like Bruce Wayne training to become Batman, Twitchell spent years studying martial arts so that one day he could kick the Fonz’s ass.

Despite the Fonz’s artful dodging, the episode, “A Little Case of Revenge,” is notable in that...

The '80s Sitcom That Launched Tom Hanks' Career
Image
For much of the 20th century, if an up-and-coming actor was eying a movie career, taking a prominent role in a television series could be perilous. While it may be hard to believe now, there was a time when film was considered a far more prestigious line of work than getting beamed into the living rooms of viewers all over the world. Obviously, breaking through in television wasn't an automatic death knell, but familiarity could breed a fixed set of expectations. Ted Danson could've been a huge movie star, but after a few seasons of brilliant work in "Cheers" all people could see was Sam Malone. Tom Selleck, the man who almost was Indiana Jones, faced similar struggles as he tried to break free of his "Magnum P.I." persona.

So, when Tom Hanks, after making his bones as a performer in the Great Lakes Theater Festival in Cleveland, Ohio,...

Allan Freeman Dies: Marketing Exec Who Worked On Campaigns For ‘Star Wars’, ‘The Shining’ & Three Best Picture Oscar Winners Was 88
Image
Allan Freeman, a groundbreaking movie marketing executive who worked on campaigns for Star Wars, The Shining, The Omen and Best Picture Oscar winners Rain Man, Dances with Wolves and The Silence of the Lambs among many other films, has died. He was 88.

His family said Freeman died June 7 of an undisclosed illness.

Born on May 8, 1937, Freeman began this three-decade career as a “Mad man,” doing consumer research from Madison Avenue on how to improve the efficacy of advertising campaigns for corporate giants General Foods and Bristol-Myers. In the early 1970s, he began creating campaigns for Palomar Pictures, which had been acquired by Bristol-Myers.

Freeman launched his own boutique consultancy that helped craft campaigns for such movies as Sleuth (1972), The Heartbreak Kid (1972), The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) and The Stepford Wives (1975). His caught drew the attention of execs at the then-ailing 20th Century-Fox.

Allan Freeman, Pioneering Movie Marketer for ‘Superman,’ ‘Star Wars,’ Dies at 88
Image
Pioneering Hollywood movie marketing strategist Allan Freeman has died. He was 88.

Freeman died on June 7 due to unspecified causes, former friend and colleague Martin Lewis, a movie and music marketing strategist who worked as a consultant with Freeman on United Artists projects, told The Hollywood Reporter. Sid Ganis, a former president of Paramount, chairman of Columbia, Lucasfilm exec and president of the Motion Picture Academy, in a statement praised his former colleague and friend.

“Allan Freeman was a pioneer. Someone had to invent research for movies and Allan was the one!” Ganis said. Freeman, who worked behind the Hollywood curtain on film releases for Superman, Star Wars and Rain Man, as an early research director at Warner Bros. introduced film title testing and research strategies to ensure a tentpole release better hit with audiences in theaters by avoiding pre-release confusion about a film’s plot or characters.

Allan Freeman, a marketing executive who pioneered market research techniques to successfully release blockbuster films including “Superman,” “Star Wars” and “Rain Man,” died June 7. He was 88.

Why Happy Days Star Henry Winkler Is Responsible For Ron Howard's Directing Career
Image
Ron Howard has been enjoying success as a Hollywood director for almost 50 years, though the project most people associate him with is still "Happy Days." The ABC sitcom, which lasted for 11 seasons from 1974 to 1984, was where Howard made his name playing Richie Cunningham. Given the importance of the series to launching Howard's career, it's no surprise it helped him get his start in directing, even if Howard never directed an episode of "Happy Days" itself. The series saw him share the screen with Henry Winkler, who played the Fonz, and whom Howard credits for helping him land his big break as a director.

It was while making "Happy Days" that Howard started directing short films, before eventually getting to direct the low-budget comedy "Grand Theft Auto" for producer Roger Corman. Howard went on to direct a spate of TV movies, before landing his first major studio directing job on 1982's "Night Shift.

Splash Revisited: Tom Hanks’ Breakthrough Role In The Romantic Fantasy
Image
A Still From Tom Hanks’ Splash(Photo Credit –Prime Video)

Tom Hanks starred in the oddball little movie Splash before going on to win two Oscars and become one of Hollywood’s most adored names. Although this romantic fantasy-comedy, which came out in 1984, may not have the same stature as Forrest Gump, it was the film that first showed audiences Hanks’ indisputable charm and demonstrated his obvious destiny. Funny, warm, and unexpectedly moving, Splash wasn’t just his breakout; it was the film that let the world fall in love with him as he rose to prominence.

What Is The Plot Of Splash?

Directed by Ron Howard and screenplay by Lowell Ganz, Babaloo Mandel, and Bruce Jay Friedman, Splash tells the whimsical story of Allen Bauer (Tom Hanks), a fruit-and-vegetable businessman from New York who unexpectedly finds himself falling for a mysterious woman named Madison (played by Daryl Hannah). Directed by Colin Hanks and produced by Ryan Reynolds, the Amazon MGM film will have its world premiere on the opening night of the festival, Thursday, Sept. 2 in Roy Thomson Hall, before a fall release on Prime Video.

While three documentaries have opened the festival in the last 15 years, they have all been music docs: “From the Sky Down,” about U2; “Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and the Band”; and Spike Lee’s David Byrne concert film, “American Utopia.” Candy was a beloved Canadian comedian and actor who got his start in Toronto’s Second City before finding fame and success with films like “Stripes,” “Splash” and “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.” He died of a heart attack in 1994 at the age of 43.

That second part of the title, of course, is a nod to Candy’s famous line in John Hughes’ Planes, Trains and Automobiles, when his goofy character Del Griffith stands up to the cynical Neal Page and exclaims, “I like me.” One of Candy’s big breakout movies stateside was 1984’s Splash in which he co-starred with Hanks’ father, Tom Hanks.

The docu features candid stories and memories from Candy’s family, closest friends, and longtime collaborators, covering his on-and-off camera life. TIFF will run from Sept. 4-14.

“Comedy fans all over the world grew up on John Candy’s humor,” said Cameron Bailey,...

Ryan Reynolds Shares Update on His John Candy Movie: 'He Was a Good Person When No One Was Watching'
Image
He might be best known for playing Wade Wilson/Deadpool in the Deadpoolfilm franchise, but since October 2022, Ryan Reynolds has been working on a documentary film on the life of the late actor-comedian John Candy. Reynolds is making the untitled doc with Colin Hanks under Reynolds’ Maximum Effort production company banner. Hanks' father, Tom Hanks, starred in 1984's Splash alongside Candy.

This week, per Deadline, Reynolds talked about the documentary in an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.“I get to meet heroes,” Reynolds told Colbert. “There was a group of eight to 10 people that were really generation-defining creators, and it’s wonderful to talk to storytellers about a beautiful man, who was a beautiful storyteller, who passed at 43, way too young,” he said.

Candy died in 1994 of a heart attack, but made his mark well before that in films like Spaceballs, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Uncle Buck, Home Alone,...

The Fantasy Romance Series That K-Drama Fans Will Love On Hulu
Image
A classic Korean fairy tale involves a mermaid who falls in love with a fisherman, with this premise adapted and modernized in the 2016 K-drama "The Legend of the Blue Sea." Currently available to stream on Hulu, the series is divided into two narratives, one set in Korea's medieval Joseon era, and the other in the present-day. Reuniting the core couple at the center of these two time periods is reincarnation, with their star-crossed romance reborn through time and tragedy. This dual-narrative approach lets "The Legend of the Blue Sea" weave in a number of classic K-drama themes and tropes while presenting a thoroughly entertaining and unique story.

During the Joseon Dynasty, young nobleman Kim Dam-ryeong (Lee Min-ho) falls in love with mermaid Se-hwa (Jun Ji-hyun). Centuries later, Dam-ryeong has been reincarnated into a con artist named Heo Joon-jae, while a reincarnated Se-hwa takes on the name Shim Cheong after being smitten with the handsome human.

It wasn’t long before the champion used his strength advantage to weigh on the challenger, though, including tearing Uso’s chest with his razor-like chops. Gunther seemingly had the match won when he smashed Uso with the World Heavyweight Title and landed a splash, but the challenger refused to give up. Uso continued to battle out of precarious situations,...

Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise & Will Smith Were Once Locked In A Box Office Showdown—Here’s Who Ultimately Won!
Image
Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, and Will Smith blockbuster race(Photo Credit –Instagram/Facebook)

There was a time when three of Hollywood’s biggest titans were locked in a quiet, high-stakes race – not for awards, not for roles, but for pure box office bragging rights. Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, and Will Smith once battled it out for a record that said one thing loud and clear: unstoppable hitmaker.

Back in the 1990s and early 2000s, all three stars were at the top of their game. Tom Hanks had gone from Splash to Big to back-to-back Oscar wins for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump. Cruise was riding high with Top Gun, Rain Man, and the launch of Mission: Impossible. Meanwhile, Smith jumped from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to alien-punching box office gold in Independence Day and Men in Black. Each of them was printing hits like clockwork.

That’s when the box...

‘Freaky Tales’ Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck Explain How Tom Hanks Lore Led to Casting Tom Hanks
Image
Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are back on the big screen with Freaky Tales, their biggest swing yet.

The longtime creative partners haven’t released a film since Captain Marvel grossed a cool $1.1 billion in 2019. The duo then went on to helm four episodes of the Cate Blanchett-led FX miniseries, Mrs. America, after promoting their MCU installment’s spring release that year. And by the time the political drama premiered in April 2020, Boden and Fleck were stuck inside like the rest of the global population, providing them with the bandwidth necessary to finally develop Fleck’s long-gestating passion project about his memories as an 11-year-old Oaklander in 1987. The film isn’t as semi-autobiographical as Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans or James Gray’s Armageddon Time, but it’s equally personal for Fleck.

The title of Freaky Tales is based on the “Freaky Tales” song by celebrated Oakland rapper, Too $hort,...

When Lindsay Lohan’s Appearance Was Altered Using VFX In Herbie: Fully Loaded To Maintain Family Audiences!
Image
Lindsay Lohan Herbie Fully Loaded ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

“At 18, we deflate our chests” is not a line from Lindsay Lohan’s Mean Girls high school world, but it might as well be used once the actress hit the racetrack in Herbie: Fully Loaded, a coming-of-age sports flick by Disney.

Featuring a teenage Lohan at the absolute summit of her career, the studio — prone to inciting controversies — loaded up this 2005 spin, only to find its leading lady’s curves too much for a kids’ ride. It all happened in 2005 when test screenings of Herbie: Fully Loaded with parent groups flagged the teenage actress as too loaded in the front for a family flick.

Big measures were taken to surmount Lohan’s chest, though the poster, featuring Lohan front, center, and bustier than ever, stirred more fuss. Disney felt obliged to pull her from ads, rolling out new ones featuring Herbie alone...

Disney+ Shelves ‘Princess and the Frog’ Series — and Its Long-Form Animated Content for Streaming
Image
It ain’t easy being green, and it ain’t easy spending so much green either.

Disney has axed a series meant for Disney+ called “Tiana” spun off from its 2009 animated film “The Princess and the Frog,” one that would have featured the return of the original film’s voice actress Anika Noni Rose, IndieWire has confirmed. The series was announced back in 2020, has been in development since, and has gone through several different creative teams, but the production costs to make it work were too great to continue, a source told IndieWire. THR first confirmed the news about the series being shelved.

The loss of “Tiana” is not indicative of just one project; it’s part of a larger change of thinking at Disney around long-form animated content intended for streaming. In addition to “Tiana,” an untitled, unannounced, animated feature film meant for Disney+ is also being shelved.

Why Michael Keaton Turned Down Groundhog Day
Image
The story goes that the casting of "Groundhog Day" gave its writer, Danny Rubin, a cause for concern when Bill Murray got picked for the lead role of Phil Connors, the grumpy weatherman who eventually sees the brighter side of life after living the same day over and over again. Admittedly, while we can't imagine anyone else in the role now, maybe he wouldn't have been so worried had Batman got the gig instead.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Michael Keaton revealed that he was approached for the lead role of the beloved comedy before Murray got the call. Unfortunately, he didn't accept the offer because Phil Connors felt like a character he didn't want to play again.

"I didn't get it — I thought, This guy sounds like the kind of wry, sardonic, glib young man I've played — and it ended up being so great," the actor explained.

He was right.
