Modern scream queen Jenna Ortega has been a part of several iconic franchises, given her roles in Scream, Wednesday, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. If she had her pick to join any franchise she wanted to next, she pointed to the one born from the 1984 horror comedy classic Gremlins.
Per IMDb, Ortega was recently at the South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) to promote her new film, Death of a Unicorn. Reflecting on the movies she loved as a child, Ortega mentioned Gremlins, the film that garnered a sequel along with an animated prequel series. She also made it clear she wants to join a potential third Gremlins film if one ever gets made.

There are, of course, completely self-funded projects, and there are also projects that make their way to audiences thanks to Kickstarter campaigns. One of them is Legend of the White Dragon.
Legend of the White Dragon is an upcoming action film whose production timeline has been very complex. But, as per the latest updates, the movie is complete and is nearing its release, which is certainly going to make a lot of people happy.

Jenna Ortega, star of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Wednesday, and 2022's Scream and its sequel, Scream VI, has revealed the next iconic franchise she would love to join, and it's a beloved '80s horror classic. Speaking to IMDb on the SXSW red carpet for the premiere of her new movie, A24's Death of a Unicorn, Ortega shared her hopes of one day sharing the screen with the monstrous Mogwais from the Gremlinsmovies for a feature film revival, which, at this point, is 35 years on from the chaotic creatures last cinematic outing.
The revelation came in a video (below) when Ortega was asked about which mythical creature from her childhood she would like to see have a moment in the spotlight again. Perhaps not the best to be exposed to bright lights, but the actress landed on the scene-stealing furballs from the Gremlins franchise. "You know what I used to love as a kid?...

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice star Jenna Ortega expresses interest in joining another iconic ‘80s horror franchise. The young star of Tim Burton’s recent Beetlejuice sequel has only been acting in films since 2013, but she’s well on her way to becoming a horror icon, boasting a filmography loaded with terrifying titles.
Ortega started her horror journey very early on, appearing in 2013’s Insidious: Chapter 2, but then stayed away from the genre until 2020’s satirical slasher The Babysitter: Killer Queen. She began truly establishing herself as a scream queen in 2022, starring in the Scream reboot, Studio 666, X and American Carnage. She was back for more meta-horror in 2023’s Scream VI, following that up with 2024’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, her second collaboration with Burton after her star turn as the title character in Netflix’s supernatural series Wednesday.

A hilariously terrifying comedy, The Parenting follows young couple Rohan and Josh as they plan a perfect weekend getaway in the country to introduce their parents. As tensions begin to flare between the more traditional Sharon and Frank and the laid-back Liddy and Cliff, the families soon realize that their rental – managed by eccentric local Brenda – is haunted by the presence of a 400-year-old poltergeist.
When one parent becomes thoroughly possessed (Brian Cox in one of his most unhinged and hilarious roles to date), it’s up to the young couple and their meddlesome Bff Sara to unite the families and stop the evil entity once and for all.
The movie is directed by Craig Johnson from a script by Kent Sublette (Saturday Night Live) and we recently got to sit down with the filmmakers to discuss their collaboration on the side-splittingly funny new horror comedy.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film starring Leonardo DiCaprio — which, in quintessential PTA fashion, still doesn’t have an official title — packs a budget that’s not just several time higher than anything the 11-time Oscar-nominated director has ever worked with, but far bigger than his films have ever earned at the box office.
Some reports pegged it at $180 million, but an individual with knowledge tells IndieWire it’s actually $130 million. That almost as much as what Anderson’s most successful film to date, “There Will Be Blood,” made globally in 2007 ($76 million), if you factor in inflation ($143 million).
It’s also way more than the budget of his previous film, 2021’s “Licorice Pizza,” which seemed like a big gamble, even with $40 million. Turns out, it was: that film only grossed $33 million globally. But though Anderson has moved from MGM to Warner Bros., the same film chiefs gave Anderson both of...

The late Christopher Lee was a compelling character actor and a genre icon whose career saw him land parts in numerous pop culture favorites throughout his more than two hundred film roles. He's Saruman in "The Lord of the Rings" films, he's Count Dooku in the "Star Wars" universe, and he stars in sequels to films like "Gremlins," "Police Academy," "The Howling," and more. From Tim Burton's dark fantasies to the realm of Sherlock Holmes, Lee has seen it all, but for many fans it's his horror output that they love most. Sitting atop his dozens of horror efforts, it's his unforgettable portrayal of Count Dracula that reigns supreme.
Below are all nine feature films in which Lee plays Count Dracula as a lead/title role. For completists, he did don the fangs for a 10th film, a 1970 comedy called "One More Time," but it's for no more than a thirty-second cameo.

Largely considered to be one of the best directors of all time, Steven Spielberg has been a passionate filmmaker for decades who’s created some truly entertaining movies for audiences across the board. Beyond the director’s keen eye for cinema, Steven Spielberg has also toyed with his image over the years and has appeared in several films whether as a fun addition to the narrative or an indirect figure looming in a movie scene.
Having an extensive knowledge of film and mastering the art of spectacle, a Steven Spielberg feature is always a treat to behold. That said, there are also plenty of films where the lauded filmmaker was able to enter the world of his films, giving fans a chance to see him in some of the most beloved films of all time.

The wait is almost over, and chaos is on the way, as Max has finally set a return date for the back half of the second season of Gremlins: The Wild Batch. It’s been five months since the first batch (no pun intended) of episodes dropped on the streamer, and, although we’ll have to wait one more month for the next part of the story, we now know that Season 2’s second half is set for April 10. In addition to the glorious announcement that the wacky, wild, and animated world of Gremlins is almost back on our screens, we also have a lineup of fresh names that will add their voices to the call sheet. There is no name bigger in ‘80s sci-fi fantasy films than Steven Spielberg. Though not every one of his productions from Amblin Entertainment had the cultural impact of Gremlins, The Goonies, and Back to the Future, they endured the test of time thanks to their popularity in the home video market. Spielberg’s production of directorJoe Dante’s 1987 sci-fi adventure comedy Innerspace falls right into that category.

The news that Kathleen Kennedy will be stepping down as President of Lucasfilm later this year broke this morning, and THR has now shared an update with a list of potential candidates to replace her - and one of the names is none other than current Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige.
Star Wars creator George Lucas hand-picked Kennedy as his successor back in 2012 before selling his ownership stake to Disney. Now, for the first time, the Mouse House will pick somebody new to lead the next era of the galaxy far, far away.
Kennedy came in for a lot of criticism over the years for a number of missteps associated with the franchise, but there's no arguing with the huge level of success she managed to achieve, and insiders believe finding a replacement will be no easy task.

No official announcement has been made, but Puck reports that Kennedy will be stepping down after 13 years of steering the company, a role which saw her lead the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises.
Kennedy not only oversaw the return of Star Wars to the big screen in the sequel trilogy between 2015-2019, but also saw the saga move to Disney+ across several streaming series, including The Mandalorian and Andor. She also oversaw the return of Indiana Jones in The Dial Of Destiny. Prior to her work at Lucasfilm, Kennedy produced the likes of E.

After more than a decade in a galaxy far, far away, Kathleen Kennedy is charting a course toward retirement. The Lucasfilm boss has told associates she plans to retire by the end of 2025, a source confirms to The Hollywood Reporter. Puck reported the news Monday night.
Reps for Kennedy and Lucasfilm were not immediately available for comment.
Kennedy joined Lucasfilm in 2012 as co-chair alongside Star Wars creator George Lucas, and a few months later took the reins after Disney paid $4 billion for the company and Lucas exited.
She relaunched the franchise, beginning with J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), which grossed more than $2 billion globally and reinvigorated the property as a big screen brand. Disney released a Star Wars film every year from 2015-2019 and then took a pause following Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which received a mixed response and earned just half of what Force...

Beyond "Aliens" and "Predators," the alien movie subgenre is debatably the crown jewel of cinematic science fiction. It allows visionary filmmakers and effects designers the chance to show audiences creatures they never would have imagined. Sometimes they're meant to strike terror into the hearts of moviegoers afraid of the unknown, but they can also be used to inspire a profound sense of empathy and wonder about the greater universe that surrounds our little blue planet.
Finding a good alien movie can be tricky, even on a streaming service like Netflix, despite its seemingly infinite offerings in nearly every genre (even though physical media is where the goods truly are). Admittedly, they don't have what many consider to be the best alien movies ever made, but that doesn't mean there aren't a few hidden gems, forgotten masterpieces, and workable misfires in the catalog to fuel your next intergalactic movie night. Spoilers for "The Monkey" follow.
If there's anything more bonkers than the bloody exits people make in Osgood Perkins' new movie, "The Monkey," it's the surprising stars that enter it. Through this nightmarish adaptation of the short Stephen King story, a trail of blood, guts, and darkly hilarious accidents befall poor twins Hal and Bill (both played by Theo James), who are haunted by a toy monkey playing the drums.
It's nothing new for some impressive A-listers to find themselves in a story from Stephen King. Morgan Freeman, Kathy Bates, and Jack Nicholson, to name a few, have all got caught up in either the supernatural or the naturally human stories of the legendary author's works. Now while James might take center stage here, there are three fairly big talents that also get briefly caught in the grip of the monkey.

CultureFly is celebrating Gremlins‘ 40th anniversary with a figure created by original Madballs designer James Groman.
Standing 12″ tall, the stylized soft vinyl Stripe toy holds a smaller Gizmo plush as well as a dart accessory.
Groman’s detailed sculpt showcases the menacing monster’s razor-sharp claws, devilish grin, and signature white mohawk.
The piece is limited to 1,000 worldwide and comes in premium, themed packaging.
Pre-orders launched a New York Comic Con last October, but the remaining inventory is in stock and shipping now for $220.
Groman worked for American Greetings in the ’80s, where he helped develop brands like Madballs, My Pet Monster, Care Bears, Popples, and Ring Raiders.
He went on to establish his own freelance studio, providing design, sculpting, and prototyping for such properties as Star Wars, Harry Potter, Godzilla, Universal Monsters, G.I. Joe, and various Marvel and DC comics.

Copyright issues are something that most people who watch movies don't think about all that often, yet they frequently cast a shadow over studios and filmmakers who wish to make something. In the case of director Oz Perkins' upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's short story "The Monkey," that started with getting the rights to the author's copyrighted tale. Unfortunately for Perkins and Neon, the studio backing this particular movie, the problems didn't stop there.
In a recent conversation with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar), Perkins, who is coming off of the success of last year's breakout horror hit "Longlegs," revealed that the title character in "The Monkey" had to undergo a change due to a copyright held by Disney. "When I was given the assignment, the producer said, 'Oh, by the way, Disney owns the cymbals, because of [the toy monkey in] 'Toy Story,''" Perkins explained.

"Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore," Dorothy famously stated in a movie quote considered the fourth greatest ever by the American Film Institute. No, Dorothy, you're not -- you're in Hollywood! With a population just shy of three million, the entire state of Kansas has less residents than New York City and Los Angeles, while it's just a hair above Chicago. Yet when it comes to the movies, "The Wheat State" punches far above its weight, with cinematic representation including Academy Award winners, blockbusters, and even films that have joined the hallowed ranks of the National Film Registry. What gives?
Perhaps it's because filmmakers consider the 34th state the perfect great plains state, with its waving wheat fields and endless horizons. More than anything, maybe it's the welcoming Kansas culture of "midwest nice" that has never met a stranger. Whatever the reason, "The Sunflower State" has proven...

Forty years have gone by since Cyndi Lauper let us know The Goonies “‘R’ Good Enough”… and now, it looks like they’re finally ready for a comeback! Last month, it was reported that Warner Bros. is developing new Gremlins and The Goonies films, with Chris Columbus (who wrote both of the original films) attached to at least one of those projects. As Deadline put it, WB was working on “a new Gremlins from Christopher Columbus and a Goonies treatment.” Now, Deadline has learned who’s writing the script for the sequel to The Goonies, and in the process has confirmed that Columbus is involved with both the Gremlins and Goonies revivals. Potsy Ponciroli, writer/director of the 2021 Western Old Henry is writing The Goonies sequel, with Chris Columbus on board to produce the film alongside Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario of Amblin Entertainment. Oscar winning actor Ke Huy Quan was discussing his favorite action scenes from his movies with EW while promoting his new film, Love Hurts. Quan reflected upon a moment between him and Harrison Ford before they filmed the famous mine cart scene in Steven Spielberg's classic film, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Only 12 years old during production, the actor said he was frightened of the intense scene and Harrison Ford took a moment to console him.
"When we shot this sequence, I was so scared. And I cried. I remember Harrison Ford kneeling down in front of me and asking me if I was okay. Ke Huy Quan’s first time out as a leading man is currently in theaters for a twist on the upcoming Valentine’s Day usual programming, but while the newly revived Academy Award-winner makes the promotional rounds, he inevitably fields questions about a possible Goonies sequel, especially powered by not just one reunion with Sean Astin in Love Hurts, but his former co-stars would celebrate him as he got his hand and feet imprints installed at the famed Tcl Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles.
Quan would already say that he “would love for it to happen” in regards to a Goonies sequel, but he now tells Collider that the cast is ready to jump on the ship with him. The Everything Everywhere All At Once star explained,
That’s on all of our minds. I’ve spoken to everybody, and especially our head Goonie, Steven Spielberg, who also wants to do one.

Scare Me and Werewolves Within director Josh Ruben is carving up his place in the slasher pantheon with Heart Eyes, a charming rom-com with a gnarly body count.
Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding star as co-workers mistaken for a couple, putting them directly in the crosshairs of a vicious killer on Valentine’s Day. The slasher, out in theaters this Friday, wears its romantic comedy influences on its sleeves, but one key slasher guided Ruben on his first slasher film.

It’s been 40 years since The Goonies first said “Never say die” on the big screen. Recently, most of the cast gathered to recognize actor Key Huy Quan, who played Data in the 1985 The Gooniesmovie. Quan, who won an Academy Award in 2023 for his performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, was honored with a hand and footprint ceremony at the Tcl Chinese Theater in Los Angeles on Feb. 3.
Per People, The Goonies screenwriter Chris Columbus along with Quan’s costars Corey Feldman (Mouth), Jeff Cohen (Chunk), Kerri Green (Andy), and Josh Brolin (Brand), were on hand for the ceremony. Among Hollywood directors, few have the career highs and lows as Joe Dante. Dante, a lover of schlock cinema, Looney Tunes and Chuck Jones, has achieved iconic success with some of his films, while others hold the record as some of the biggest bombs in Hollywood history. This bipolar success rate likely derives from Dante’s aesthetic: for better or worse, his movies always combine horror with humor, slapstick with the macabre. For proof, look no further than Dante’s greatest success, Gremlins.
Gremlins opened in 1984 and became an immediate smash, elevating Dante as a director among the Hollywood pantheon. It also made an icon out of its star, Gizmo the mogwai. More than 40 years later, the film still commands a following, thanks to the way it slithers over the razor’s edge between horror and comedy. That mix of goofiness, satire, sincerity and excellent special effects make the movie feel as fresh as ever,...

Osgood Perkins, the director of one of 2025's highly anticipated horror films, The Monkey, has shared why he made some changes to the story written by Stephen King. Apparently, Disney is to blame. However, Perkins has no issues with the changes, and they're part of his revision of the original story about the cursed toy.
The Monkey is based on a short story King published in Gallery magazine in 1980, which was then revised for the 1985 collection Skeleton Crew. If you've read this one before, then you know that the monkey in question likes to bang cymbals and announce he's about to do something nasty. But as it turns out, Perkins couldn't use a cymbal-banging monkey toy (also known as "Jolly Chimp"), because of a connection to a movie that the House of Mouse owns.

Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, the wife-and-husband producers who have 13 Oscar nominations and an Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award between them, will be honored at the Oscar Wilde Awards next month.
The 19th annual event is scheduled for Feb. 27, three days before the Academy Awards, at the historic Ebell theater in Los Angeles. Actors John C. Reilly and Éanna Hardwicke will be saluted as well.
Also new to the lineup is Will Ferrell, who will introduce Reilly and hand him his trophy. The pair, of course, have co-starred in such films as Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006), Step Brothers (2008) and Holmes & Watson (2018).
Created by the US-Ireland Alliance, the Oscar Wilde Awards celebrate the work of those from Ireland — and some who are not — who contribute to film, television and music. (Kennedy, with eight Oscar noms, and Marshall, with five, are Californians born in Berkeley and Glendale, respectively.

We’ve been overdue for a solid family-friendly creature feature for years now, as it seems there’s been a lack of earnest entries in the genre since the Amblin Entertainment days of E.T. and Gremlins. But the drought may finally be over thanks to the A24 fantasy adventure The Legend of Ochi, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to a packed audience of adults and children alike. Not only does it bring back the beloved and near-lost art form of bringing loveable, animatronic critters to life, but it also tells an endearing tale set in an immersive world that is near-impossible not to get lost in.

In fact, each monster is getting their own month, giving the Halloweenies plenty of time to dig deep into their respective origins and chart their influence over the past century and some change.
This month sees the gang in Transylvania, where they’ve already shared their favorite vampire films, reviewed Robert Eggers‘ reimagining of Nosferatu, and talked all over Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino‘s From Dusk til Dawn. Today is the main event, though, as the Halloweenies offer their signature historical analysis to Tod Browning‘s 1931 Dracula.
Topics include: Browning’s strange and wonderful career, the U.S. in early 30’s (spoiler: not great!), vampire history and lore, early days of Universal and talkies, the 21-year-old nepo baby founder of the Universal Monsters,...

The Ochi exist. Furry monkey-like creatures of an orange-hued pelt with pronounced ears and huge dark eyes, the Ochi could feel just at home in the “Star Wars” universe, James Cameron’s “Avatar” realm Pandora or in Amblin classics like the “Gremlins” series. They are not real in an organic sense, but the beings in “The Legend of Ochi” are tangible entities, sophisticated puppets crafted to inhabit the lush greenery of Carpathia, a fictional island in the Black Sea where modernity and tradition find themselves at a crossroads.
Produced by A24, “The Legend of Ochi,” brings the bountiful imagination and technical innovation of writer-director Isaiah Saxon into a larger canvas. Saxon, perhaps best known for directing the stunning “Wanderlust” music video for Icelandic artist Björk, flexes the visual prowess that he and his team at Encyclopedia Pictura have developed over two decades, which combines plenty of handmade elements with digital tools.

The Motion Association (formerly Motion Association of America) is one of the most powerful institutions in Hollywood, as it determines which ratings are given to almost every film that is released in a calendar year. Although a slightly different version of the MPAA existed in the Golden Age of Hollywood, the modern rating system has gone through multiple revisions. 1984 saw the debut of the PG-13 rating due to Gremlins and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and in 1999, the X-rating was replaced in favor of the new Nc-17 label.
