    By-The-Numbers

A pretty by-the-numbers slasher entry from the early '80's. A maniac in a bear suit with steak knives for claws (Freddy?) prowls around a college campus on the night of a coed scavenger hunt. There's a small body-count, a really dumb ending and a little blood. The film is pretty dark-looking, but there are some good atmospheric shots, and the acting is above average for this type of film. The story moves fast enough, but the murder scenes seem poorly executed, leaving little to offer slasher fans. The bear costume is original though. Too bad the ending is incredibly stupid (that dubbed-in voice just does not work). Features a few messy neck shreddings, but little else. Two Stars.

The Scaremaker (1984 - UK Video Title)

Well, I came across this little number in Greenwich at the Exchange shop and although the sleeve was an awfully painted picture that "bears" little to no resemblence to any scene in the film I thought I'd pay the £3 and give it a twirl. I'm glad I did. It's good little slasher flick compared to most of the low budget teen horrors of the time. The plot is a little thin as are the not-so-special effects and the killer's stupid costume, but all this adds to the charm. It's the kind of film you'd get from the video man on a friday night and watch with your cousins. And there's loads of almost familar faces that we've all seen in horror films from the era including "Vicky" from "Friday The 13th Part 2". Watchable if you can actually find this title anywhere anymore.

    An odd little horror gem

This film is an odd little piece of horror history. It stars Hal Holbrook (Creepshow), Rutanya Alda (Mommie Dearest)and Julia Montgomery (Revenge of the Nerds) and features a murderer wearing a dancing bear costume. The murder sequences are goofy but then again so is the entire film. Like a train wreck, you will not be able to take your eyes off of it and the bizarre musical score and odd sense of humor make this a fun little horror gem to have around the house. The film centers around a series of murders taking place on a college campus during their annual "scavenger hunt"...and just when you think you know who the murderer is, the film springs the classic horror movie "surprise" twist ending on you that makes you scratch your head and say "Huh?" This is an excellent "party" film since you really don't have to pay all that much attention to it. Recommended for fans of the "slasher film" genre.

    Bad movie night

A sorority holding a scavenger hunt are attacked by a person wearing a bear suit, claiming to be somebody that is already dead. The company (Thorn Emi) that financed this picture must be ashamed of themselves, because this has got to be one of the worst slasher flicks from the 80's. It is good for a chuckle here and there, especially when the killer is killing the sorority girls with his bear suit. Otherwise avoid it. 2 out of 10.

Too little blood and too much mindless, coed shenanigans...

(** out of ***** -- and I'm probably being generous) Well, if you can get past the first half hour, with drunk college guys joking around, mugging for the camera, and doing one irritating imitation after another (who's idea was that?), then you'll probably find the rest of this mystery slasher mildly diverting, at the least. A killer in a mascot bear costume with big round eyes and knives for paws (kinda like Freddy Krueger) is knocking off guys and gals on a late-night scavenger hunt. When the story isn't following one lame relationship problem after another, we get to watch Hal Holbrook, as a campus security guard, sitting at a desk looking bored and out of place as he tries to figure out who the killer is. Not all of the acting's bad, and there are some fairly scary moments, but there's hardly any blood and too many mindless, coed shenanigans. The use of oldies rock and roll songs and some of the hair and clothing styles make the movie look like it was supposed to take place in the '50s (even though the annoying school DJ -- who for some damn reason gets his ugly mug shown about EVERY FIVE MINUTES in his studio -- tells us it's part of a some kinda '50s flashback weekend).

HIGHLIGHT: The final shot is pretty chilling, and it's a great leaves-you-hanging place for the movie to end. Still, probably not worth the rental (assuming you can actually find this anywhere).

    • Trivia
The film's trailer was shot years after the movie itself was. It features a scantly-clad young woman in bed talking about how weird things have been lately, while short clips of the movie play. The actress herself however never actually appears in the movie.
    • Goofs
In the basketball scene at the beginning of the movie the scoreboard shows DeWitt ahead, 73-71, with two seconds on the game clock, before the winning basket was made. The final score of the game was 72-70.
    • Alternate versions
The UK version is known as The Scaremaker. Even though the film isn't full of gore, it is cut by 16 seconds. Some of the cuts are:
      • Benson's stabbing is cut, you see him stabbed once before dieing.
      • The murder of Jane, in the squash court. It shows the bear attack, then cuts to her all bloody, none seen coming out a wound.
      • Doesn't focus on Jane's body hung up in the shower's.
      • Trish's death in the Summer House is cut, not as much blood is seen. and
      • The ending where the killer stabs Teddy, who is trying to help Dawn, it is not seen, so it is left unclear what has happened.
