Clint Eastwood andBurt Reynolds were the bonafide male cinema superstars in the ‘70s. Eastwood was the imposing straight-shooter of the Dirty Harry franchise, while Reynolds had the laid-back Southern charm unafraid of dangerous stunts in Smokey and the Bandit and Hooper. The two stars who shared a friendly rivalry at the box office eventually paired up for their only picture: City Heat.

Warner Bros. Discovery may not be ready to launch a free ad-supported streaming TV (Fast) service of its own just yet, but the company is on the lookout for ways to boost its digital ad revenue. Its latest tactic is to add free movies to YouTube. Wbd has put more than 30 full-length films on the social video platform to stream at no cost, as long as you don’t mind putting up with a few commercials.
Key Details: Movies featuring Kevin Bacon, Chevy Chase, Robert De Niro, and other stars are streaming free on YouTube. Over the years, Warner Bros. has tried to monetize its catalog of older movies through different subscription streaming services, including FilmStruck — which it shut down less than a year after it launched in 2018.
Now, Warner Bros. Entertainment has quietly taken a new approach to bringing its content to YouTube to farm its film catalog for digital ad revenue.
Since the start of 2025, the company has released 31 movies on Warner Bros.-owned YouTube channels, all available for free. The movies include ads, unless you are a YouTube Premium subscriber. Warner Bros. has published a YouTube playlist with the free movies, available at this link.
The titles are varied and cut across genres, with some films on the list dating back decades. The movies include “Mutiny on the Bounty” starring Marlon Brando, “The Adventures of Pluto Nash” starring Eddie Murphy, “Oh, God!” featuring George Burns in the titular role, “The Mission” starring Robert De Niro,...

In a very uncharacteristic move by Warner Bros., the studio has uploaded 31 movies to stream on YouTube for free. There is a perception that those who are watching a movie via a streaming service over going to the theater, is that it's free to do, despite paying a monthly subscription. Those streaming platforms are more costly than ever, and people are starting to make cuts to what could be a must-have service. Yet, a movie on YouTube that can be watched for free with no rental fee or any commercials, is something Warner Bros. is looking to offer movie fans with titles like the first Dungeons & Dragons, Mutiny on the Bounty, and the Jackie Chan-led Mr. Nice Guy.
Warner Bros. Entertainment's YouTube page made a playlist of movies that can be watched for free, some of which are critically acclaimed hits. These include Palme d'Or winner The Mission starring Robert DeNiro,...

Few movie stars have ever had a more unerring sense of what their fans want than Clint Eastwood. The biggest risk he ever took was, really, no risk at all. Yes, he spent one of his last hiatuses from the CBS Western hit "Rawhide" to make a very different kind of Western with Italian auteur Sergio Leone in "A Fistful of Dollars," but if that film had flopped he still would've be an in-demand television star. Instead, the low-budget, unusually-violent-for-its-time oater became an international hit (three years before its U.S. release in 1967), and made Eastwood look like something of a counterculture trailblazer for how it spit in the face of the traditional Westerns still being made by John Wayne.
Eastwood's stature as arguably the biggest star in Hollywood would be solidified in 1971 when he brandished a 44 Magnum and chased down a thrill-seeking killer in "Dirty Harry." Eastwood would make...

Jason Statham's star power stems from an earlier era of filmmaking, and thrillers starring tough guys like Charles Bronson and Clint Eastwood. It's never been a particularly noble genre, but it can be quite engaging in the right hands. There's far less of a market for it these days, when superheroes rule the roost and massive special effects are the order of the day. Even action films hearkening back to their heyday of the 1970s and 1980s like The Fast & The Furious franchise use big budgets and massive ensembles to compete with modern mega-franchises.
Statham's work tends to stay lean and mean, and the actor has both the presence and the physical skills to pull it off seemingly without effort. There aren't many performers or filmmakers specializing in the kind of movies he makes, and while not all of them are masterpieces, he's still found his share of winning efforts.

In 1984, Clint Eastwood teamed with another screen icon for City Heat, which became one of the star's biggest disappointments. While Eastwood has worked non-stop since the 1950s, it's fair to say the 1980s was one of his weaker decades. If anything, the reception to City Heat is emblematic of his spotty record during the decade. Outside of Clint resurrecting the Western genre with Pale Rider in 1985 or helming his own favorite movie, Bronco Billy, much of his output like would-be blockbuster Firefox or lame action-comedy Pink Cadillac proved very disappointing.
Regardless of the tepid critical response to his '80s output, Eastwood was still a major box-office draw. The best example of this is the fourth Dirty Harry movie, Sudden Impact. Despite only earning 51% from critics (via Rotten Tomatoes), this sequel was one of Clint's biggest hits of the decade, nabbing over $67 million worldwide. Eastwood followed up with City Heat,...

Jason Statham remade not one, but two movies by Hollywood icon Burt Reynolds - it's just a shame their only collaboration sucked so much. Despite making his name in Guy Ritchie gangster comedies, Statham soon made a dramatic gear shift in his career. The Jason Statham action movie era began in earnest with 2001's Ghosts of Mars, but it was The Transporter that proved his big breakthrough. Like any leading man, he has had his peaks and valleys, but the box office success of The Beekeeper proves Statham is still on top of his game.
He has remade several cult classics in the action genre too. Statham fronted the remake of Charle Bronson's The Mechanic and played the lead in the reboot of the Death Race franchise. One of the earliest remakes young Statham appeared in was Mean Machine, where he played a violent prisoner named Monk who takes part...

Movie stars are still very much a factor in Hollywood, but they seem a little less special in our social media age. Even those that don't have active accounts on Instagram, TikTok, Bluesky, and the like seem a little more human now that anyone can whip out their smartphone and record, say, Timothée Chalamet popping into a coffee shop for an espresso. We just don't get awestruck by stars the way we used to.
Those of us born before the proliferation of the internet remember a time when stars felt larger than life. Warren Beatty, Barbra Streisand, and Burt Reynolds were like American royalty. When you went to the movies and saw them in a trailer for a new motion picture, you knew you'd be right back in that theater (or one close by) to see that sucker in a few months. Eddie Murphy's lackluster directorial debut in Harlem Nights led to a career slump in the late 1980s. The film's disappointing box-office performance highlighted Murphy's reluctance to direct again. Despite the setbacks, Murphy's resilience and comeback performances in the 1990s solidified his box-office standing.
Like all bankable Hollywood stars who direct feature films, Eddie Murphy was given the chance to make his feature directorial debut because of his box-office drawing power, which was virtually unparalleled throughout much of the 1980s. Indeed, his uninspired feature directorial debut, the 1989 crime comedy film Harlem Nights, is emblematic of how he probably had too much power for his own good. By the late 1980s, the anarchic comedic presence that the actor displayed with his star-making performance in the 1982 buddy cop action comedy film 48 Hrs. was absent and replaced with cautiousness and predictability.

Tony Lo Bianco, the Brooklyn actor who oozed criminal charm in the gritty 1970s New York City dramas The French Connection and The Seven-Ups, has died. He was 87.
Lo Bianco died Tuesday night of prostate cancer at his horse farm in Poolesville, Maryland, his wife, Alyse, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Lo Bianco was also memorable as a smooth-talking con man with a lonely nurse (Shirley Stoler) for a girlfriend/accomplice in Leonard Kastle’s documentary-style The Honeymoon Killers (1970), which Francois Truffaut once said was his favorite American film.
In another cult classic, the horror thriller God Told Me To (1976), directed by Larry Cohen, Lo Bianco starred as a New York cop who investigates a series of bizarre murders orchestrated by the leader of a religious group (Richard Lynch).

Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood's legendary Hollywood friendship led to a friendly rivalry and eventual collaboration in City Heat. Despite high expectations for City Heat due to the star power of Eastwood and Reynolds, the film did not live up to blockbuster status. A serious injury to Reynolds on the first day of filming altered his career trajectory and led to false rumors about his health, impacting his stardom.
The friendship between Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds began in 1959, when the pair, both of whom were Universal Pictures contract players, were simultaneously fired by Universal. As Reynolds fondly recounted throughout the rest of his career, he was fired because of his acting, while Eastwood was let go because Universal objected to his chipped tooth and large Adam’s apple.

This post contains spoilers for the "Dirty Harry" films.
Don Siegel's "Dirty Harry" changed cop movies forever upon its release in 1971. Capitalizing on the "law and order" craze stoked by President Richard Nixon, which was a reaction to the perceived anarchy of the various protest movements of the 1960s, Clint Eastwood's Miranda rights-flouting Harry Callahan fed conservative moviegoers a big, juicy slab of red meat. It also allowed the actor to flourish in a genre outside of Westerns, thus expanding his appeal and turning him into one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood.
"Dirty Harry" ends with Callahan, having caught and killed (in self-defense) a vicious serial killer, hurling his badge into a quarry. Throughout the movie, his hard-driving, occasionally extrajudicial methods, which could've resulted in a swift arrest and saved multiple lives, are decried by his superiors. It appears the inspector has had enough. Audiences, however,...

Richard Roundtree, who will forever be linked with the role of trailblazing Black detective John Shaft, has died. The actor, who on screen is best remembered for the iconic role, was also a breast cancer survivor known for raising funds to treat the condition. He was more recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died yesterday afternoon, with his family at his bedside.
Richard Roundtree was born in New Rochelle, New York, played football for Southern Illinois University and did some modeling before the acting bug bit.
He was drawn to theater and joined New York’s acclaimed Negro Ensemble Company, then starred as Jack Johnson in The Great White Hope off-Broadway before the role of John Shaft presented itself — a lucky break secured after Sidney Poitier refused to screen test for the role, leading director Gordon Parks to cast Roundtree instead.

Richard Roundtree, the ultracool actor who helped open the door to a generation of Black filmmakers and performers with his portrayal of private eye John Shaft, “the cat that won’t cop out when there’s danger all about,” died Tuesday. He was 81.
Roundtree died at his home in Los Angeles of pancreatic cancer, his manager, Patrick McMinn, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Richard Roundtree, who broke ground with his signature role in the Shaft movie franchise, died October 24 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer with his family at his bedside. He was 81.
Roundtree’s career spanned five decades and included everything from his most popular blaxploitation role to a very early appearance on As the World Turns in 1956 to being a Season 2 main cast member on Ava DuVernay’s OWN series Cherish the Day last year.
He is best known for playing detective John Shaft in the 1971 action thriller and its sequels, Shaft’s Big Score! (1972) and Shaft in Africa (1973) as well as the short-lived 1973 Shaft TV series.
For his performance in the original film, Roundtree was nominated for a New Star of the Year Golden Globe and hailed as the first Black action hero. More importantly, the films made Shaft a cultural hero, a symbol of Black power onscreen, at the box office and beyond.

Burt Reynolds' Smokey And The Bandit movies are some of the late, great actors' most popular. The tar paid his dues as an actor thanks to appearances in TV shows like Alfred Hitchcock Presents or Reynolds' short stint on Western Gunsmoke, alongside b-movies like Operation C.I.A. He finally broke through thanks to classic 1972 survival thriller Deliverance and became one of the biggest stars of the decade. Alongside Smokey And The Bandit - which was the second highest-grossing film of 1977 behind Star Wars - he appeared in hit after hit, including The Longest Yard.
Sadly, some poor choices during the '80s saw his career wane, including City Heat, which paired him with friend Clint Eastwood. In his later career, Reynolds still turned in some great work, including Boogie Nights - though he famously loathed the film - in addition to working constantly. Eddie Murphy was the surest of bets in the 1980s. At the age of 19, he single-handedly yanked "Saturday Night Live" back from the brink of cancellation after the departure of the original cast, and was all of 21 when he shot to big-screen stardom opposite Nick Nolte in Walter Hill's action-comedy classic, "48 Hrs." His second feature, "Trading Places," was also a critical and commercial hit, while his stand-up LP "Eddie Murphy: Comedian" went platinum. By 1984, Murphy was so hot, Paramount inserted him into the finished Dudley Moore comedy "Best Defense" in the hopes that he could enliven the deathly unfunny film with his ad-libbed brilliance. It didn't work, but no one held it against Murphy. The movie was just that bad.
There was no question that Murphy had turned into one of Hollywood's biggest stars overnight, but his first two hits had been two-handers. He had yet to carry a film on his own.

Much has been written about the New Hollywood of the 1970s and how it was formed by a group of bearded film-school grads who grew up on a diet of cinema and broke the hidebound rules of the studio system. But there’s no talking about American film in the Me Decade without discussing the impact of Burt Reynolds, the iconic star who encapsulated so much of the era’s freewheeling attitudes and post-modern sensibilities.
Unlikely the falsely humble stars of yore, Reynolds clearly reveled in being a movie star, whether he was yukking it up on Johnny Carson’s couch or mugging through silly all-star extravaganzas like “The Cannonball Run.” He had the cool of the Rat Pack, but in a way that seemed more attainable to a country mired in recession; Reynolds’ public vibe always leaned closer to a six-pack and a Trans Am than to martinis and limousines.

Burt Reynolds had bravely opened up about his battle with addiction hoping his story would help others.
The mustachioed megastar, who died Thursday at age 82, struggled with substance abuse in the late 1980s and early 1990s when he was addicted to the controversial prescription sleeping pill, Halcion.
In 1992, Reynolds revealed to TV Guide he was addicted to Halcion for more than four years after he hurt his jaw while making the 1984 film City Heat with Clint Eastwood.

Glory days: by the late 1970s, Reynolds and Clint Eastwood were the two most bankable stars in the world.

Burt Reynolds has died at age 82 from a heart attack in his home town of Jupiter, Florida. Reynolds had been suffering from poor health in recent years but was still appearing in films. He was announced as one of the stars of Quentin Tarantino's forthcoming "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood". Reynolds entered acting in the 1950s but his rugged good looks sometimes worked against him as he was told he bore too close a resemblance to Marlon Brando. He made "B" movies before gravitating to television where he landed a recurring role as a blacksmith in the hit series "Gunsmoke". Reynolds would go on to star in other short-lived TV series that never capitalized on his real life wit and humor. Of playing the title character...

Burt Reynolds, one of Hollywood’s most popular leading men during the ’70s and early ’80s in such films as “Deliverance,” “Smokey and the Bandit, “The Longest Yard” and “Semi-Tough,” has died. His rep confirmed that he died Thursday in Jupiter, Fla. He was 82.
He later earned an Oscar nomination as best supporting actor in Paul Thomas Anderson’s ode to skin flicks, “Boogie Nights.” He had been set to appear in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Hollywood.”
Reynolds’ appeal lay in his post-modern macho posture undercut by a wry self-awareness, which he used to good effect in comedies as well as action films. For a period during the ’70s he was the nation’s top box office draw. But after one too many bad movies, his popularity waned. He returned to television, where he’d gotten his start, mostly in Westerns, and produced his own sitcom, “Evening Shade,” which brought him an Emmy.

Burt Reynolds was, at one stage, the biggest movie star in the world. His movies regularly topped the box office, and as such, move studios were eager to work with him. That made the union of him and Clint Eastwood in the 1984 project City Heat such a salivating one.
Little did Reynolds know, however, that City Heat would have a hefty impact on his career, and his star power.
The film was originally set to be directed by The Pink Panther's Blake Edwards, but Eastwood instead wanted, and got, Private Benjamin's Richard Benjamin behind the camera. On the first day of shooting for the movie, though, came an accident that would have serious ramificaitons.

Christmastime is here. Presumably you already have chestnuts roasting on an open fire, a turkey and some mistletoe, and your first screaming argument about who’s cooking for who and where. ’Tis the season for such timeless traditions, and along with a collective craving for manifestly ill-judged food combinations and a moratorium on our disapproval of comedy knitwear, classic Christmas movies are now a vital part of the great yuletide experience.
But what precisely is a classic Christmas movie? Timeless vintage offerings like Holiday Inn and Miracle on 34th Street are stuffed from titles to credits with all things Christmassy, yet you’ll also find films like Casablanca and The Great Escape on many festive film lists, which have nothing more to do with Christmas than Cannibal Holocaust.
Even the single greatest ‘Christmas Movie’ of all time, It’s a Wonderful Life has a pretty tenuous connection with the Holiday Season,...

Burt Reynolds has seen both sides of America, and he stands at the center of a great divide. Shortly before Hillary Clinton announced her second presidential campaign, Reynolds joined her and Bill for a high school football game in Arkansas. The actor has deep roots in the state, where he’d shot the early ’90s show “Evening Shade” and the 1973 rural action drama “White Lightning.” In the audience with the Clintons, Reynolds found himself witnessing a very different country from the fast-paced world of entertainment figures and political pundits.
“Nobody paid much attention to us,” said Reynolds, 80, during a recent conversation in Key West, Florida. “It was a hell of a lot of fun. I love Bill. Mrs. Clinton and I had a lot of laughs. I had never that experience any place, before or since.” The crowd was respectful but ambivalent about the famous faces in the room. “It was important to them,...

Arabian Nights (Miguel Gomes)
In lauding Miguel Gomes‘ three-part, six-and-a-half hour behemoth, it’s perhaps important to consider his background as a critic. Not just in terms of the trilogy’s cinephilic engagement with Rossellini, Alonso, Oliveira, etc.; also in its defiant nature. While it’s easy to assign the trilogy certain humanist and satirical labels from the get-go and just praise these films for following through on them, Gomes continually seeks to mutate and complicate his of age-of-austerity saga.

Artist, pun master and pop culture aficionado Hanksy showed his patriotic side in a new series of street art spoofs.
In honor of America's birthday, Hanksy created a series of majestic eagles featuring some of today's most beloved bald pates. "Breaking Bad" actor Walter White, downward spiral Britney Spears, sci-fi icon (and devout Englisman) Patrick Stewart and comedian Larry David make a motley crew of Independence Day icons, don't you think?
The patriotism doesn't stop there. Hanksy is also hosting an Instagram scavenger hunt for those who are celebrating the 4th in the New York City heat. Whomever wins goes home with their very own Larry David bald eagle panel. If you want that L.D. head to Hanksy's Instagram for clues on Thursday.

Everyone seems just as pumped for the Jay-z-produced soundtrack for "The Great Gatsby" as they are for the flick itself. But before we look ahead at what The Hova has in store for what we can only imagine will be the coolest-ever soundtrack to something you were forced to read in high school, let's look back at some of the all-time great movie songs.
Feature by Adam D'Arpino
20. Three 6 Mafia: 'Hard Out Here For a Pimp' ('Hustle & Flow')
Three 6 Mafia took home the Oscar for Best Original Song for this jam that confirmed what we had all already suspected: Pimpin' ain't easy. Terrence Howard and Taryn Manning's performances in "Hustle & Flow" were stellar, but there's little doubt that Three 6 Mafia's Oscar appearance, combined with host Jon Stewart's verbal Oscar tally ("Three 6 Mafia 1, Martin Scorcese 0") is what everyone remembers most about the movie.

Some were huge in their day, with hit records, popular movies and roles on top TV shows. But we haven’t seen them much lately — or for years. Here’s what they’ve been up to recently.
Sam Jones
The onetime Playgirl centerfold and star of Flash Gordon (1980) went on to star in 1986’s My Chauffer and the 1987-88 TV series The Highwayman. While starring roles were hard to come by, Jones occasionally appeared in minor TV and movie roles up until 2007. He is reportedly now the CEO of a security company providing protection for high-profile clients all over the world.
Charo
For those too young to know of her, think Shakira’s dance moves and Sofia Vergara’s sexy comic timing — in one person. Known for her trademark “Cuchi-Cuchi” and her frequent Love Boat and Tonight Show appearances in the ’70s and ’80s, Charo, whose full name is Maria...

Typecasting is a terrible fate to befall an actor. Many of them have suffered from it over the years, accepting role after role in similar films with similar plots and similar characters simply because they have no real alternative. However, in spite of the risks involved there are also those who subvert this association; those who have elevated themselves to near legendary status within their chosen genre. Their performances define it and are woven inextricably into its rich tapestry. Two such actors are pictured above and are the subject of this article – one, a silent and anonymous loner with no time for small talk and very direct methods of dealing with his adversaries, the other a straight talking, no – nonsense peacekeeper with a trademark southern drawl. Both are perhaps best known for their westerns, although they also directed, produced and starred in a variety of other films too including military epics and ‘unorthodox’ police procedurals.

Film director best known for the Pink Panther, Breakfast at Tiffany's and 10
The film-maker Blake Edwards, who has died aged 88, will be best remembered as the creator of the Pink Panther films, and as the husband of the entertainer Julie Andrews. But Edwards was a third-generation show-business figure whose complex and controversial career spanned more than 50 years, initially as an actor and writer and subsequently as one of America's most prolific producer-directors, primarily concerned with the popular genres of comedy and musicals and with creating television series.
Despite working in mainstream cinema, his maverick spirit and ego made him an uneasy partner with Hollywood studios. He famously savaged the hand that had fed him so well with S.O.B. (1981), a raucous, vitriolic attack on Tinseltown. His sophisticated work drew strongly on his love of early cinema (his stepgrandfather had directed silent films), and on his own life and psychological problems (he...

He’s one of Hollywood’s most recognisable stars, a respected director, and an accomplished musician, too. Glen salutes the finest scores of Clint Eastwood...
One of the most well respected actors and directors working today, Clint Eastwood has an enviable body of work to his credit. He is also quite vocal about his love of music, particularly jazz, which underpins much of directorial efforts, and country and western, which marked his debut album in 1959, Cowboy Favourites.
Whilst the album was far from a success, he has written a number of excellent pieces for films over the years including Honkytonk Man, City Heat, Heartbreak Ridge, A Perfect World, The Bridges Of Madison County, Qui, Absolute Power, True Crime, Space Cowboys, the piano compositions for In The Line Of Fire, and the excellent song that plays out during the credits of Gran Torino.
Having penned numerous songs to accompany projects over the years,...

No matter the weather, Usher stays looking fresh to death. Yesterday, in the sweltering New York City heat, the singer with two top-ten hits on the Billboard charts --"O.M.G." which can now be titled the official summer jam of 2010, and "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love" -- stayed cool and collected in his distressed denim, tan T and military-inspired button-down. Not only does this man have talent, but he has impeccable taste. Just a little morning eye candy.
