Love Lies Bleeding is an intense, queer, unconventional love story between two unstable people. Directed and written by Rose Glass and Weronika Tofilska, and stars Kristen Stewart, Katy O’Brian, Ed Harris, Dave Franco, Jena Malone and Anna Baryshinkov. The film explores the destructive nature of relationships, marked by strong performances and a visually arresting narrative.
Lou (Stewart) meets Jackie (O’Brian) at the gym her father owns and is instantly smitten. Jackie is charming, looks great, and isn’t afraid to confront a man that gets in her space. This is something Lou witnesses first-hand, as Jackie whacks one of the gym patrons in the face when he gets a little too friendly. After their sex-filled rendezvous, Lou discovers her new girlfriend works at her father Lou Sr.’s (Harris) gun range.
Needing a place to stay, Jackie asks if she could stay with Lou...

Star Wars is seen as one of the major Hollywood box office hitters in modern cinema, yet the franchise has seen some recurring competition over the years. While Star Wars' box-office credentials are respected now, the release of the first film in 1977 was widely expected to be a failure. Even George Lucas himself, the creator of the franchise, was convinced Star Wars would flop at the box office.
Since then, Star Wars has grown into arguably the largest multimedia franchise in the world, spawning 11 theatrically released films since 1977. From the conclusion of the original trilogy and Lucas' prequels to Disney's Star Wars sequels and spin-offs, the franchise has seen immeasurable success at the worldwide box office. That being said, the competition for the franchise has always been prevalent as with every film series. From the expected flop of 1977's Star Wars to the modern film landscape, here is every film...

Stella Stevens, who starred with Elvis Presley in “Girls! Girls! Girls!” and with Jerry Lewis in “The Nutty Professor” as well as in disaster film “The Poseidon Adventure,” died Friday in Los Angeles. Her son, Andrew Stevens, said she had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. She was 84.
“Girls! Girls! Girls!” (1962) was one of the more generic Elvis films— there wasn’t all that much for Stevens to do — but Variety was keen on her performance in 1963’s “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father,” starring Glenn Ford and Shirley Jones in the story of a widower who’s romantically interested in one woman while his son wants him to marry another: “Stella Stevens comes on like gangbusters in her enactment of a brainy but inhibited doll from Montana. It’s a sizzling comedy performance of a kook.”

Happy 2021, everyone! It’s been a few weeks, but we’re back with a brand-new edition of our weekly Blu-ray and DVD releases column to kick off this new year. And while we may not have a ton of titles headed home on Tuesday, we do have an excellent bunch of films all the same, including one of my favorite films of 2020, Love and Monsters, which hits various formats this week. Another film from last year that I really enjoyed was Brea Grant’s 12 Hour Shift, which hits both Blu-ray and DVD (and will be available On Demand) tomorrow, and if you have somehow never seen it, I highly recommend picking up the new Blu for Savage Streets, featuring Linda Blair.
Other releases for January 5th include Tintorera… Tiger Shark, From the Depths, Nina of the Woods, and Hacksaw.

Nudity in film has been around as long as the movies themselves — you just have to know where to look. Starting with the hedonistic pre-Code Hollywood all the way through the power-checking #MeToo moment, Danny Wolf’s comprehensive new documentary “Skin: A History of Nudity in the Movies” unpacks the political, artistic, and social landscapes that allowed nakedness to happen, or not, on the big screen. , especially those with a predilection for depravity, and should send even the most learned moviegoer home with plenty of material to revisit or discover anew.
“Skin: A History of Nudity in the Movies” opens with the idea that Hollywood, way back when, was far less prude than it is now — “the Sodom of the pacific,” one critic says — dating all the way back to D.W. Griffiths’ problematic early movies. But before the Hays Code made nudity in films a moral concern through its censorship guidelines,...

After the groundbreaking horror-sci-fi hybrid success of Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979), several low budget filmmakers decided to add their goo-covered two cents to the discourse; hell, Roger Corman himself cranked out a couple skeezy sci-fi winners in Galaxy of Terror (1981) and Forbidden World (’82). But there’s a nasty little number out of Britain funded with some Hong Kong coin that shouldn’t be dismissed: Inseminoid (1981) decides that Alien should be a straight up slasher in space and we’re all the better for it.
Released in the UK in March, Inseminoid (Aka Horror Planet most everywhere else) had a slow rollout worldwide, with the U.S. not taking it in until November of ’82. Critics mostly hated it of course; the exception across the board being Judy Geeson’s performance. Audiences were more receptive and the film did quite well in the Alien knockoff wars. But after an initial setup that...

Louisa Moritz, an actress who appeared in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and brought a good-natured joy to a stereotypical blonde bombshell persona in early ’70s fare like Love, American Style and Match Game but in more recent years joined other women in accusing Bill Cosby of sexual assault, has died from a longstanding heart ailment, her longtime friend and publicist Edward Lozzi announced.
Moritz was 72 and died at her home last week in Los Angeles of natural causes.
In Cuckoo’s Nest, Moritz played Rose, a small but pivotal performance in which her good-time pal of Jack Nicholson’s R.P. McMurphy sneaks into the mental hospital for the against-the-rules party that leads to tragedy. In one memorable moment, she slow-dances sweetly with Danny Devito’s childlike Martini, his head resting upon her breast.

Though Scream Factory originally made their name by releasing comprehensive special editions of beloved horror titles and some lesser-known cult films deserving reappraisal, after five years the company is diversifying their output more and more. They struck an exclusive deal to release IFC Midnight titles, they’ve picked up a few films and put them out under the “Scream Factory” imprint, and have even developed and produced their very first original feature, Mark Pavia’s Fender Bender, in 2016. In addition to all of this, Scream Factory has begun releasing smaller and lesser-known catalogue titles, nearly bypassing the special features altogether and just giving some older cult titles their high-def debuts. Included in their latest slate of releases is everything from a John Stamos sci-fi action film (Never Too Young to Die) to an unofficial Troll sequel. Let’s take a look at four of these catalogue titles—The Screaming Skull,...

Orange Is the New Black returns June 17. The show has rightly earned praise for its nuanced, moving portrayals of female inmates of all stripes, and serves as a reminder of how far things have come in terms of images of incarcerated women on screen. In appreciation of series creator Jenji Kohan and the cast and crew's elevated take on the subject matter, we're looking back at the bleak and often exploitative history of the strange "women's prison drama" film genre. The portrayal of women in prison can be split - as most of Hollywood can - into two periods: Pre- and Post-Code.

One of the very best of this beloved subgenre is Caged Heat (1974), a wonderful exploitation masterpiece and the directing debut of Oscar-winner Jonathan Demme, that has everything you could possibly hope for in a Women-In-Prison movie: nudity, shower catfights, lesbian coupling, race wars, murder, chain-swinging, switch-blade slashing, and shock therapy!

A lot of classic Canadian genre films are making the transition to Blu-ray this year. Some have had a long home video life, and have been widely available throughout various formats, and others, like Curtains have had a practically non-existent presence on any format. From what I understand, a terrible version of the film was released in a random multi-pack, and featured audio and video quality that may have rivaled a third generation VHS dub. Synapse have resurrected Curtains, in a way only Synapse could. One thing you can be sure of, when a title is announced as being released to Blu-ray by the label, is that they’ll either put out a perfect, preserved transfer of the film, or they’ll release nothing at all. A lot of the time their releases get delayed, because they aren’t happy with how it has turned out, and they would like...

For the last week of July, there may not be a lot of titles being released onto DVD and Blu-ray, but the ones that are making their debut are absolutely an impressive bunch.
On Tuesday, Synapse Films is bringing the 1983 cult classic Curtains to Blu-ray for the very first time ever and Paramount is making every Twin Peaks fan’s dreams come true this week with their Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery box set, which includes all the missing footage that we’ve all been waiting to be released for decades. Other titles coming out include the indie thriller The Den as well as a new Mystery Science Theater 3000 collection from Shout Factory.

Synapse are still hanging in there, and rocking us with some unexpected Blu-ray announcements. Among them, was the long-lost Canadian cult film, Curtains. From what I understand, this is actually the first time this film will be legitimately available on home video, and in the best home video format available. Now is the best time ever to be a horror fan. Even if you are not a fan of the new releases, we still have amazing releases like this to look forward to, that allows us to re-discover lost classics. Synapse is known for taking their time with titles, and not releasing them until the final product is perfect, so that is what you can expect on the 8th of July when Curtains finally comes home. One of my favorite slasher films of the 80s, Curtains was always kind of a bitch to track down, and when you were able to find it, the print was usually shit. Synapse Films is about to change all that. Read on for details.

As a fan of cult classic exploitation romps and binges there are few sets that appeal to me as much as The 4 Cult Movie Marathon series from Shout Factory. With the two new volumes in this series, the first two volumes, they’re stepping into some ground that is wholly appropriate for the label and which has been dominated by the Drive-In Cult Classics series from Mill Creek Entertainment and touches on some of what has made the Vinegar Syndrome a breakthrough label in 2013. The competition between these moving parts could be incredible, digging ever deeper to uncover the raunchiest, campiest and most exploitative. That’s not to say there aren’t a horde of labels and series vying for the crown of king smut, but I’m enjoying what I’ve seen from Shout and Vinegar especially. When there’s no more room at the bottom of the barrel,...

Savage Streets (1984) Motion Picture Marketing Directed by: Danny Steinmann Starring: Linda Blair, John Vernon, John Dryer, Linnea Quigley The Plot is Afoot! Brenda is the leader of a pack of young girls in her town who spend their free time making trouble and raising hell. When they cross a gang and wreck their car, they strike at Brenda by raping and violating her sister, Heather, as well as murdering her best friend. Having had enough, Brenda unleashes street justice on the bastards, switch blade and all. The Damage: Sure, Sure, Linda Blair. “The Exorcist” is a family drama, not a horror movie. No, we believe you. And “Repossessed” was a relevant Mel Brooks throwback. And “Chained Heat” was an indictment on the prison system. And “Savage Streets”? An honest look at the peril of American youths! What? Just because “The Exorcist” is my favorite horror film ever made doesn’t...

Chicago – The characteristics of the classic B-movie during the 1970s and ‘80s usually required prisons, women and uniforms designed to easily tear away. The Music Box Theatre in Chicago will highlight that era on Friday, October 12, when they present “Chained Heat.” One of the co-stars of that essential women’s prison movie, Sybil Danning, will be at the theatre in person to introduce the film.
Born Sybilie Joanna Denninger in Weis, Austria, Danning was the daughter of a U.S. Army major, and spent time between the United States and Austria as she grew up. After trying out working in the dental field and cosmetology, she began modeling and acting in the early 1970s, making her debut in an Austrian film called “Komm nur, mein liebstes Vögelein.” After working her way through that film industry, she began her American career with “Bluebeard” (1972) and “The Three Musketeers” (1973), but was also doing such...

Revolution, Season 1, Episode 2: “Chained Heat”
Written by Eric Kripke
Directed by Charles Beeson
Airs Mondays at 10pm Et on NBC
After a too-busy pilot that shrunk six hours’ worth of plot into 42 minutes, Revolution slows things down for its second episode. If the first outing was designed to lure in hesitant viewers with action and quickfire plot developments, here the show attempts to reveal a little more about the characters’ psyches.
The structure of the episode plays well, as it bisects the central quartet and gave both duos something to do. Miles (Billy Burke) and Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos) free Miles’ friend Nora and subsequently a cadre of Militia slaves. Aaron (Zak Orth) and Maggie (Anna Lise Phillips), meanwhile, set off to take Ben’s weird Usb key to Grace, though she’s facing a struggle with someone keen to take her own version of the device.

Director: Jon Favreau. Writer: Eric Kripke. Cast: Daniella Alonso, Tim Guinee, Maria Howell, David Lyons, Elizabeth Mitchell, Graham Rogers, Zak Orth, Billy Burke, Tracy Spiridakos, Tracy Spiridakos, C. Thomas Howell and Anna Lise Phillips. Episode 2, titled "Chained Heat" released for "Revolution" September 24th. Not to be confused with Linda Blair's 1983 sexploitation film of the same name, the showing here is much more tame than the film. This episode focuses on keeping the show smallish by highlighting only a few characters in frame, relying on matte paintings for backgrounds, and including many scenes of time filling dialogue. This show also sees the breakdown of society in a very Disneyland sort of way. The story thus far is following the remnants of the Matheson family. Ben Matheson (Tim Guinee) lost his life in the pilot and Danny (Graham Rogers), the son, has been captured by a local militia. Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos), the sister,...

“I feel like I’m Han Solo, and you’re Chewie, and she’s Ben Kenobi, and we’re in that f**ked-up bar.” – Jay from the movie, Dogma.
If you’ve seen the movie Dogma and are a fan of Star Wars, then you probably understand the reference of that line and that’s the best way to explain my feelings after watching the second episode of Revolution, “Chained Heat.” The similarities are not subtle either.

As far as relationship building in Revolution is concerned, everyone – estranged Matheson-clan included – is starting pretty much at rock bottom, and not doing much to work their way up from that. There’s more than a few fundamental differences that exist between Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos) and her good-at-killin’ uncle Miles (Billy Burke), but the core difference explored here is Charlie’s reluctance to kill just anyone who happens to get in their way.
This reluctance probably stems from the series’ need to not have Miles kill Nate (J.D. Pardo) the next time the two meet – and with Nate (or not Nate, as he later admits to Charlie) stalking Miles like some obsessed Twilight fan, Charlie had better convince her uncle some lives are worth saving pretty quickly. To her credit, she gives ...

Revolution attempted to smooth out its narrative potholes in "Chained Heat," but did the new NBC drama succeed?
For me, it’s a simple yes. But judging by some of your comments following the Revolution premiere, the sell could be much more difficult.
A key aspect of the series is why the technology is or isn’t working. Aaron’s theory that the switching off event might be due to something man-made is easier to stomach than some unknown Earthy phenomena. Because it pushes the super special flash drives into the realm of being things that fix the event, as we’ve seen with Grace, and since Ben knew it was going to happen, this makes Monroe’s actions against Matheson’s that much believable.
The second big reveal that began framing the narrative is the reveal of just where Rachel is now. She’s basically the Belle to Monroe’s Beast,...

The former CW producer is bringing a trio of his former acting colleagues to NBC's Revolution, which bowed last week to the highest numbers of any network premiere in three years.

Mark Pellegrino (Lucifer on Supernatural) will portray a militia officer on the October 1 installment, while Todd Stashwick (Dracula on Supernatural) will play a drug lord on the sixth episode and Colin Ford (a young Sam Winchester) will then appear a week later as the brother of an abducted boy.

Mother's Day (1980) Anchor Bay Blu-ray & DVD Available Now
Though the company had yet to be formed, Mother’s Day was the first unofficial Troma film. Written and directed by Charles Kaufman (Loyd’s brother), it’s a violent, cheapjack revenge film with several of the patented Troma ingredients already in place. Uneasy comedic elements, amateur performances, sketchy scripting and aggressive misogyny abound. In spite of all this, Mother’s Day is also a fairly engrossing little exploitation film that seems to get better with age. Featuring the late, great Beatrice Pons as Mother Rose.
Special Features Include:
* Feature Length Audio Commentary with director Charles Kaufman and assistant art director Rex Piano
* Behind the Scenes of the Original Mother’s Day: includes Super 8 footage of screen tests and special effects (with Charles Kaufman commentary)
*Original trailer

The astronomical success of The Avengers and its $200 Million worth of state-of-the-art CGI effects shows how far the Marvel Universe has evolved. Marvel Comics first foray into film was a 1966 syndicated package of cartoons called Marvel Superheroes that ran on local TV stations. Marvel comics announced the upcoming series in the “Marvel Bullpen Bulletins” of the November 1966 issues, stating “It won’t be long before our swingin’ super-heroes make their star-studded debut on TV, appearing five nights a week – that’s right, five – count ‘em -five nights a week, for a half-hour each night. So you’ve just got time to make sure your set’s in good working order – check your local paper for time and station – and prepare to have a ball!”
Featured in Marvel Superheroes were Iron Man, The Hulk, Sub-Mariner, Captain America, and Thor. The show was a collaboration between two TV companies: Krantz Films was...
