While the ‘80s were full of movies that depicted hope for the future, others played into the fears of what could be coming ahead. Films such as Wargames and The Terminator examined the dangers of advancing technology and the threat they pose to average citizens. Similarly, John Badham’s 1983 action-thriller Blue Thunder was a metaphor for the American police state.

Director Christopher Nolan’s “mythic action epic”, based on The Odyssey, is reportedly due to go into production in January – and will wrap in March.
The rumours over the film director Christopher Nolan would make after Oppenheimer turned out to be quite spectacularly wide of the mark. It’ll be a vampire horror, the whispers suggested. No, it’ll be a tech thriller along the lines of 1980s helicopter film (and short-lived TV series) Blue Thunder, another report burbled.
Instead, it’s been revealed that Nolan is adapting Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, with Universal Pictures announcing in a social media post that it’ll be “a mythic action epic shot across the world.”
The film is currently scheduled for a summer 2026 release, which means Nolan and his collaborators will have to move fairly quickly to meet that deadline. It makes sense, then, that the film is said to...

Christopher Nolan is adapting classic Greek poem The Odyssey by Homer for his next film, it’s been confirmed.
We’re catching up on a few stories following the festive break, so let’s start here.
Nobody can accuse Christopher Nolan of being complacent. After beginning his career with films like the low-budget Following, the mind bending Memento and thriller Insomnia, Nolan created arguably one of the greatest superhero trilogies of all time with Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.
Since then, Nolan has been ever more ambitious in his cinematic storytelling, from the epic beach scenes of Dunkirk to the innovative narrative of Tenet and the craftsmanship behind the build up of tension before the explosion in Oppenheimer.
His next film is somewhat surprising, and certainly not an easy text to adapt. According to Deadline, Nolan is turning Homer’s epic 8th century Greek poem The Odyssey into a film.

Image Source: Sony Pictures Ah, the glorious ’80s—a time of big hair, neon dreams, and action movies so thrilling they practically leapt off the screen. Sure, everyone raves about Die Hard, Terminator, and Aliens, but there’s another gem soaring just under the radar. Meet Blue Thunder, the 1983 action-packed movie that brought helicopters to the forefront of cinematic coolness! This underrated classic stars none other than the late legendary Roy Scheider (Jaws), the magnetic Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange), and the hilariously lovable Daniel Stern (Home Alone). Directed by John Badham (Saturday Night Fever and WarGames), Blue Thunder is a high-octane combination of razor-sharp storytelling and breathtaking aerial stunts. Picture this: 1980s Los Angeles shimmering under golden sunsets, with a police chopper like no other cutting through the skies. Vietnam vet police officer Frank Murphy (Scheider) gets assigned to test a cutting-edge helicopter equipped with high-tech surveillance tools to aid law enforcement.

Ever since Nolan wrapped up work on Oppenheimer and won multiple Oscars - including Best Picture and Best Director, there was great curiosity about what he'd do next. Anticipation only got bigger once the cast list started to come together, with Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong'o, and Robert Pattinson set to appear.
It's now been confirmed that Christopher Nolan's next movie is The Odyssey, an adaptation of Homer's epic Greek poem. After tackling true stories, original sci-fi, and comic books for so long, Nolan's pivot to adapt Homer's poem was unexpected. There was never any doubt that whatever he did next would be big, and Nolan's typical secrecy left the internet buzzing with various rumors about what he wanted to do next.

Numerous rumors and theories have been doing the rounds, with the mysterious project said to be everything from a futuristic action thriller inspired by '80s helicopter flick Blue Thunder, to a period vampire thriller. However, insiders maintained that nobody came close to nailing Nolan’s real idea, and they were absolutely right.

For months, there has been rampant speculation over Christopher Nolan's follow-up to "Oppenheimer," the three-hour epic that earned him the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director. The cast has been gradually coming together: Matt Damon, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Anne Hathaway and Charlize Theron. Could it be a vampire flick? For a time, there was a hilarious rumor that Nolan was planning a remake of the John Badham police helicopter action flick "Blue Thunder" — because apparently that's how you spend clout after winning two Oscars and making a $977 million-grossing R-rated masterpiece.

Christopher Nolan has already assembled a very impressive cast for his mysterious new movie, and reports indicate that he has one more main role to fill. Now, we're hearing that The Dark Knight trilogy director is keen to work with Robert Downey Jr. again following the actor's Academy Award-winning performance in Oppenheimer.
Unfortunately, Downey Jr.'s MCU commitments may prevent him from joining the production.
According to scooper Daniel Richtman, Nolan might find it difficult to lock Rdj down because "he's very much the main character in Avengers: Doomsday like Thanos was in Infinity War."
This isn't the first time we've heard that Downey Jr.'s take on Doctor Doom will be a major player in the next Avengers movie, but it sounds like he really could end up being the main focus, as Richtman adds that he is expected to appear in "almost every scene."

It's a day ending in 'y', so you know what that means — another acting heavyweight has boarded the next Christopher Nolan movie! Since the Oscar winning Oppenheimer director set his latest project at Universal just last month, a flurry of exciting names have been added to the call sheet of what's already shaping up to be quite the blockbuster event for summer 2026. First there was Matt Damon, then everyone's favourite friendly neighbourhood Tom Holland signed up for a lead role — and just last week, Zendaya and Anne Hathaway entered the fray, too. Now, per THR's reporting, it looks like A Quiet Place: Day One star Lupita Nyong'o has just become the newest addition to the movie's increasingly starry ensemble.
Technically, we had an idea Nyong'o may have been lining up a part in Nolan's 13th film, as Deadline had included her name in social media posts following Hathaway and Zendaya's casting before hastily retracting.

Christopher Nolan’s 2026 movie brings Anne Hathaway and Zendaya on board, joining Tom Holland and Matt Damon.
Christopher Nolan’s 2026 movie is set to go before cameras early next year, and as it stands, we still have no idea what to expect. Well, that’s not exactly right. We have plenty of ideas, thanks to the ceaseless turning of the rumour mill, but we have no confirmed details apart from casting. However, the list of names involved with Nolan’s next film continues to grow, with a fresh announcement (via Deadline) revealing that Anne Hathaway and Zendaya will be joining the already-announced Matt Damon and Tom Holland.
That’s quite an ensemble already, and should it follow in the usual mould of Nolan projects, more big names will surely follow.
Like Damon, Hathaway is a returning player for Nolan, having collaborated with him previously on Interstellar and The Dark Knight Rises.

Casting announcements for a new Christopher Nolan movie are like the years in Smash Mouth's 'All Star' — they start coming and they don't stop coming. And having seemingly outdone himself with the stacked ensemble of his Best Picture winner Oppenheimer last year, the British filmmaker is already looking to increase the star power wattage with his latest effort. After already setting Tom Holland and Matt Damon to lead his as-yet-untitled new Universal movie in recent weeks, today Deadline are reporting that Nolan has just added two more heavyweights to his next movie's call sheet — Zendaya and Anne Hathaway.
Who exactly Zendaya and Hathaway will play in the movie — or Holland, or Damon for that matter — remains, like the film itself's plot, a mystery at this point. Not that that's stopped folk having a stab at guessing what Nolan's cooking up anyway, though. It's hardly been a month since we first...

Written and directed by Michael Crichton, the sci-fi thriller Runaway had its thunder stolen by another killer robot movie in 1984: The Terminator.
It’s a wonder what author and filmmaker Michael Crichton must have thought when Orion Pictures released its moderately low-budget sci-fi thriller The Terminator in cinemas in October 1984. Not just because of its parallels between Crichton’s 1973 film Westworld – right down to Yul Brynner’s implacable, gun-toting robot cowboy, which Arnold Schwarzenegger later admitted had influenced his performance. Rather, because young upstart filmmaker James Cameron completely stole Crichton’s thunder.
Less than two months later, in December 1984, Crichton’s own killer robot movie emerged in cinemas. Called Runaway, it cost a little more to make than The Terminator (Cameron’s debut cost about $6.4m; Crichton’s film cost $8m). But unlike the former, Runaway was a box office disappointment. Christopher Nolan's new movie doesn't yet have an official plot synopsis, but two fan-made posters now imagine what Tom Holland and Matt Damon's characters might look like based on current rumors. After Tenet in 2020, Nolan made the acclaimed Oppenheimer in 2023, which won seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. The filmmaker is now gearing up for his next outing with Damon and Holland expected to star, and unconfirmed reports have suggested the story could be anything from an aerial cop action movie inspired by Blue Thunder (1983) to a 1920s vampire film.

Taylor died Wednesday night of natural causes at an assisted living facility in Davis, California, her son Andrew Enberg told The Hollywood Reporter.

Before embarking on her Star Trek voyage, the Indiana native wrote and produced episodes of such popular network crime fare as Quincy, M.E., Magnum, P.I., Jake and the Fatman and In the Heat of the Night. After the success of Oppenheimer and the cultural significance of films like Interstellar, Inception, and The Dark Knight trilogy, Christopher Nolan has become one of the most sought-after directors in Hollywood. His passion for filmmaking and attention to detail are just a few of the many reasons why people adore his work as much as they do. With this in mind, it is not surprising that the filmmaker’s next film is highly anticipated in every regard.

However, there have been many rumors about the plot of the project. Fans are not sure about what story the film is going to follow, and the different kinds of speculations are not helping the confusion.

With Venom: The Last Dance wrapping up one live-action Spider-Verse trilogy, Sony’s not wasting anytime in greenlighting the next Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland. Indeed, Sony just set an Untitled Spider-Man Movie for a July 24, 2026 release date. They’re also confirming that Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton, who was originally set to direct the MCU’s now-scrapped Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, will be taking the helm as director. He takes over from Jon Watts, who directed the last three Spider-Man movies with Tom Holland.
However, there’s a bit of a wrinkle. The fourth Spider-Man movie is set to come out in theaters only one week after Christopher Nolan’s next film, in which Tom Holland is set to appear opposite Matt Damon. This strikes an odd note, as it would be strange to have two massive Tom Holland movies open within a week of each other, especially...

Christopher Nolan is being linked with umpteen different films at the moment – perhaps it’s best if we rule some of them out.
Speculation has been rife in the last few weeks as to just what Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan’s next film is going to be. Universal Pictures is distributing the film, and it has a 2026 release. But what on earth is it?
Is it a vampire movie? Is it a sort-of remake of Blue Thunder? Could it be an espionage film? With each day comes a different rumour, and with that in mind, we’ve decided to do something useful. Instead of speculating as to what Nolan’s new movie is, we’ve managed to 100% rule out some projects that he won’t be taking on.

As a rumour emerges that Christopher Nolan might be making a vampire horror next, we look at some unsettling moments from his earlier work.
The success of Oppenheimer was so unexpectedly huge that, if Christopher Nolan were to walk into a studio with a script about the making of decorative wall plates, executives would sign a cheque without asking too many questions.
Instead, one rumour rolling around is that Nolan has some sort of genre film in the works – according to the singularly intense YouTuber Grace Randolph, Nolan’s next project is in a similar “genre space” to movies coming out “in the next couple of months.” When a viewer on Randolph’s live stream asked whether it was some sort of horror film, Randolph replied, “That’s a good guess.”
Since then, Gizmodo/io9's Germain Lussier has seemingly backed up that story, and added a little more to...

In light of the Christopher Nolan rumours, we take a look back at 1983’s Blue Thunder – a high-tech thriller that deserved more attention on its release.
It’s hard to pinpoint why the vehicular TV and film boom of the 1980s happened. Was it a coincidence that the likes of Knight Rider (1982), Firefox (also 1982), Blue Thunder (1983), Airwolf (1984) and Street Hawk (1985) all came out within a few years of each other?
Whatever the explanation, there was a brief period where vehicles got top billing, whether they were experimental planes (Firefox) helicopters, an ‘all-terrain attack motorcycle’ (Street Hawk) or Knight Rider.
Blue Thunder – the original 1983 film, not the short-lived TV spin-off which emerged the following year – is arguably the best of the lot. An action thriller directed by John Badham, it was one of the most exciting movies of its type released in the early 1980s – and yet, for some reason, several...

The 1983 helicopter action film Blue Thunder is said to be the inspiration for Christopher Nolan’s next film – at least according to the latest rumour circulating.
Speculation regarding Christopher Nolan’s next project is really starting to ramp up with rumours emerging, being debunked and then replaced, almost as quickly as we can cover them. It’s been a week since it was officially confirmed that the British filmmaker would be following up the incredible critical and commercial success of last year’s Oppenheimer by once again partnering with Universal. We also got a release date for the next Nolan project: 17th July, 2026.
With Nolan projects being what they are, a typical veil of secrecy surrounds the movie but fear not, the ever-dependent rumour mill has ground into action and in the seven days or so that have followed, we’ve had series of reports offer differing threads of speculation...

The Story: Frank Murphy (Roy Scheider), a helicopter pilot working for the LAPD, is selected to test pilot an experimental government helicopter called “Blue Thunder.” Highly sophisticated, and heavily armed, Murphy discovers the helicopter is being designed for urban use by a group within the government, headed by his old Vietnam nemesis, F.E Cochrane (Malcolm McDowell). Thought to be insane by his LAPD bosses thanks to his troubled history of war-related Ptsd, Murphy steals ”Blue Thunder” in an attempt to reveal the murderous conspiracy behind its creation, culminating in a series of spectacular dogfights in skies above downtown Los Angeles.
The Players: Director: John Badham. Writers: Dan O’Bannon, Don Jakoby. Starring: Roy Scheider, Malcolm McDowell, Candy Clark, Daniel Stern, & Warren Oates. Score by Arthur B. Rubinstein.

Quick Links Blue Thunder Is Perfectly Out-of-Date Roy Scheider Gave a Classic Performance as Frank Murphy John Badham Was Ahead of His Time with Blue Thunder's Themes
Ah, the '80s. It was a time when disbelief was much more easily suspended in movie theaters across America. That led to the Roy Scheider vehicle, Blue Thunder, making an impressive $42 million in 1983, doubling its budget thanks to a helicopter-based action plot that presaged Top Gun by combining a fighter pilot film with new helicopter and computer technology being developed in the early '80s. It was a weird, in-between time when many neo-noir films like 8 Million Ways to Die and To Live and Die in LA were romanticizing the ex-military LAPD officers who dominated Hollywood-adjacent crime films of the rugged '80s. Directors like Hal Ashby and William Friedkin and Blue Thunder director John Badham were trying out a style...

Before Dana Carvey made it big on Saturday Night Live — even before he co-starred with Mickey Rooney in the sitcom flop One of the Boys or as a helicopter cop in Blue Thunder — he filmed a pilot for a situation comedy that co-starred ultimate showbiz nepo baby Desi Arnaz Jr. The son of America’s favorite comedy couple, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, never duplicated his parents’ success despite his mother’s best efforts.
The pilot was called Whacked Out, Carvey told fellow SNL alum Chris Kattan on his Idiotically Speaking podcast. What was the sitcom about? That’s hard to say. One of the show’s writers blogged about his experience filming the pilot but neglected to mention his creation’s premise or plot, fixating on how starstruck he was in the presence of Ball.
In Carvey’s conversation with Kattan, the plot of Whacked Out was also of little concern.

Galaxie 500 have announced a new archival compilation, Uncollected Noise New York ’88-’90. The double album is due out September 20th via Silver Current Records, but to hold fans over, the indie rock act also shared two previously unreleased songs, “Shout You Down” and “I Wanna Live.” Listen to them both below.
Uncollected Noise New York ’88-’90 marks the first release of vaulted material for Galaxie 500 in nearly three decades. Featuring B-sides, outtakes, and non-album material, the compilation also boasts eight never-before-heard cuts.
“There is a sweetness in hearing the progression of us finding our own sound, our own collective voice. The Proustian power of music,” bassist Naomi Yang said in a statement. “Listening to these early recordings I can hear myself figuring out how I wanted to play bass — finding my way up the neck to where the notes would cut through, where there could be a counter-melody to the singing.

Be still, our sweating wallets: Lego has announced a 1,497-piece Jaws Lego set, which includes everything you need to recreate the film’s third act.
To celebrate the open Amityville beaches on this, the 4th July, Lego has announced a 1,497-piece Jaws set. It is, as you’ve probably gathered, based on Steven Spielberg’s 1975 classic, and contains everything you need to recreate its third act. In other words, you’ll be able to build the Orca boat and the three heroes that set off in it – so you’ll get minifigs based on Chief Brody (Roy Scheider), Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and Quint (Robert Shaw).
Most importantly, you’ll be able to build a Great White shark (which you can call Bruce if you like), and there are even a few yellow barrels among the accessories included with the set. Released in August (on the 3rd for Lego Insiders members...

Cue the famous John Williams score, because it’s time to not go into the water. Instead, it’s time to head to a fine table to build with bricks.
Lego has unveiled a new set based on Jaws, the Steven Spielberg blockbuster that changed summer moviegoing and made countless people afraid to go into the ocean.
The 1,497-piece set comes with three minifigures — Martin Brody, Matt Hooper and Sam Quint, the characters played by Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw, respectively. The three shark hunters are aboard the Orca boat, which has a detailed cabin and a removable roof. Among the accessories are a revolver, compass, fishing rod, harpoon, spear and, of course, the yellow barrels (see the images below). Also included is the infamous shark, which is not in one piece but must be built.
The set can be displayed as a cool diorama on a brick-built seawater base,...

The 80s and 90s were a great time for character actors. Guys like Gene Hackman, Brian Dennehy, Christopher Walken, John Lithgow, Morgan Freeman and many others occupied this really interesting place where they could lead their own movies and be just as comfortable playing supporting roles – whether large or small – in bigger films without worrying about things legit movie stars have to, such as bankability. Of that era, one of the biggest character actors was no doubt the fast-talking James Woods. In the eighties, his star rose thanks to movies like Videodrome, Salvador, True Believer and many others. While he never became a legit box office superstar, he was in that niche place where he could lead his own movies, such as the underrated Best Seller, while also playing plum supporting roles in movies like Chaplin, The Specialist and Casino. He was noted as one of the town’s biggest scene-stealers,...

You can’t teach someone to be an artist; as Steven Soderbergh once noted, if you could “we’d all be Stanley Kubrick.” Yet you can teach the craft necessary for artists to express themselves, and in the case of many of the books that follow, you can provide the inspiration necessary to unlock an artist’s best and most exciting ideas. Here are 13 must-read volumes for any aspiring director, books that examine the job from a variety of technical, artistic, and logistical angles. Some are more nuts-and-bolts manuals on how to use the camera, others — the ones written by working directors like Bethany Rooney, Mary Lou Belli, and Ken Kwapis — survival guides for anyone who wants to sustain a career in the industry. Taken together, they provide a comprehensive look at what it takes to direct and arm filmmakers with the tools they need to succeed.

The 1980s was a seminal period in the development of what we now define as the action movie. This was the decade that cemented the statuses of both Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger as the muscle-bound box office behemoths eating the competition for breakfast. Having emerged off the back of critically acclaimed efforts like Rocky and The Terminator, the years that followed saw the pair hone their greased-up on-screen personas to fine effect.
It wasn’t all about the muscles though. The 1980s also ushered in the era of the everyman action star with Bruce Willis in Die Hard and Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop opting for brains over brawn and reaping the benefits in multiplexes far and wide as a result. While Hollywood basked in the glory of a new generation of leading men, in the Far East, Jackie Chan was taking action movie physicality to a whole...

Many great 80s action movies, like Cobra and Blue Thunder, never received the sequels they deserved despite initial success and popularity. The success of franchises like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon led other movies to attempt to capture the same magic, but not all were successful in securing follow-ups. Surprisingly, movies like Red Dawn and Tango & Cash, which had provocative world-building and solid box office performances, never got the sequels that fans hoped for, leaving untapped potential.
The 1980s produced some of the most iconic action movies of all time, but only a lucky few spawned the franchises that are still associated with this era. For the rest, one classic movie was not enough to secure a succession of sequels – or sometimes even a single follow-up – despite popular acclaim from fans. As a result, there are a surprising number of great 80s action movies that are yet to build on their legacy,...

Kirk, who – gasp – would die in the movie’s climax, passing the torch to Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard. That’s right; it’s time to tackle Star Trek Generations!
To shepherd the Next Generation’s move to the big screen, Paramount Pictures decided to give the reigns to the feature film over to Next Generation producer Rick Berman,...
