A Knight’s War is the new film from writer/director Matthew Ninaber, who you may recognize as the director of Death Valley and Transference, or as the actor who played the title creature in Psycho Goreman.
This time out he’s given us a dark take on sword and sorcery, the story of a knight named Bhodie. Sworn to save The Chosen One believed to be enigmatic Avalon. Seemingly defeated at the last moment, his half-brother William (Matthew Ninaber) stabs him, sending him into The Realm of the Fallen, or in simpler terms Hell, to return her to our world.
Upon arriving there he’s forced to make a deal with the entity known as The Keeper. That done, he quickly finds Avalon, and the objective...

Albert Pyun’s The Sword and the Sorcerer is a notable entry in the sword and sorcery genre that has left a distinct mark on me since childhood thanks to its blend of camp, spectacle, and unrestrained imagination. Despite operating with a modest budget and limited resources, Pyun’s debut feature showcases a mix of ambition and creativity that put the film firmly on my radar back in the VHS rental days. Plus it starred Lee Horsley, who I knew as TV’s Matt Houston, so what was not to love?

Blu-ray.com has announced that Albert Pyun’s 1982 fantasy film The Sword and the Sorcerer is getting a brand new 4K Blu-ray transfer from the British label 101 Films. The movie stars Lee Horsley, Kathleen Beller, Simon MacCorkindale, George Maharis, and Richard Lynch and is scheduled to hit retailers on October 7. Albert Pyun’s 1982 fantasy adventure The Sword and the Sorcerer may not be the most fondly remembered epic of its era, but it was wildly successful. The Sword and the Sorcerer had grossed a spectacular (for the era) $39.1 million, which actually outgrossed Conan the Barbarian in North America by 1 million dollars (at a fraction of the budget).
The description, according to Blu-ray.com reads,

I'm going to need you to remember back to the very early days of the MCU. Robert Downey Jr. was Tony Stark, played with all the snark and charisma you could ever want from a genius billionaire playboy philanthropist character, and Edward Norton was the tortured Bruce Banner, a role he wasn't destined to hold on to.
A "Captain America" movie was coming up and ... well, people had opinions. Some wanted a grounded Cap, some wanted a badass Cap, and some wanted something more in line with Rdj's Tony Stark. The thing is, we had never gotten a good Captain America on screen before. We'd gotten one terrible "Captain America" film in 1990 from schlockmeister Albert Pyun ("Cyborg" and "The Sword and the Sorcerer"), and the character had pretty much fallen out of favor to all but the most die-hard Marvel comics fans.
He was too Goodie Two Shoes, at least that was the perception,...

A genre that has been around for decades and gets talked about too rarely, sword and sorcery can encompass many films and sub-genres. So, what makes a sword and sorcery film better than the others? What makes it worthy of being the best? For some it will be how closely it follows the genre’s established rules and typical stories. For others, it will be how well-written and directed they are. For us, it’s how enjoyable they are, so, yes, some will deviate a bit from the usual rules of the genre, but all will be fun. So let’s take a look at what we consider the best sword and sorcery movies!

George Maharis, a big TV star in the sixties but probably best known to JoBlo readers from his role in Albert Pyun’s The Sword and the Sorcerer, is dead at 94. According to social media posts via the actor’s caretaker, he actually passed away on Wednesday, with the cause of death not revealed. Maharis was a pretty trendy leading man in his day, with him having starred in the hip TV series Route 66, in which he co-starred with Martin Milner as two young men driving across the United States, getting involved in adventures. Taking a page from Jack Kerouac, the show made Maharis a star, but he left it prematurely due to being diagnosed with hepatitis. In 1965 he starred in a pretty good spy thriller called The Satan Bug, which came from the director of The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape, John Sturges, in which he played...

Actor George Maharis has passed away. THR reports that the Route 66 star died at his Beverly Hills home on Wednesday, according to his friend and caregiver Marc Bahan. Additional details about Maharis' passing were not revealed. The television star was 94 years old.
Maharis was best known for his role in the classic television show Route 66, which aired on CBS from 1960 to 1964. The series starred Martin Milner alongside Maharis as a pair of pals traveling through the United States in a convertible. Partway through the series, Maharis contracted hepatitis, and because of this diagnosis, he wound up leaving the show during its third season. His final episode appearing in the show was in 1963, and Glenn Corbett came in as his successor to portray a new companion to Milner. The show was canceled the following year.

George Maharis, who starred as the brooding Buz Murdock on Route 66 before he quit the acclaimed 1960s CBS drama after contracting hepatitis, has died. He was 94.
Maharis died Wednesday at his home in Beverly Hills, his longtime friend and caregiver Marc Bahan told The Hollywood Reporter.
Route 66, created by Stirling Silliphant and Herbert B. Leonard, featured the Hell’s Kitchen native Murdock and Martin Milner‘s Yale dropout Tod Stiles touring the highways of America in Tod’s Chevrolet Corvette, encountering adventure along the way.
The show “was really kind of a searching or what you may have seen hundreds of years ago where the people came over the mountains to go from one place to the other to find a better life, a place where they belonged, and they didn’t rely on anybody else to do it for them,” Maharis told The Seattle Times in 2008.

1982's Conan the Barbarian was a surprise hit for Universal Pictures, putting star Arnold Schwarzenegger on the map and launching a wave of swords-and-sorcery movies throughout the 1980s. Even more impressive, it's gone on to become a fantasy classic, with Schwarzenegger periodically lobbying director John Milius to make another sequel with him. The same can't be said for most of the swords-and-sorcery movies that followed it. The sub-genre was a shabby one, to begin with, with quality taking a sharp dip in the wake of Conan the Barbarian's success.
But the ultimate failure of the sub-genre lies less in the quality of the product than in the lessons Hollywood took from Conan. They proved not only wrong but utterly oblivious to the roiling changes in the industry. In the simplest terms, while Conan the Barbarian made money, the powers that be felt it didn't make enough money and altered subsequent efforts accordingly.

Hex Studios have unveiled the poster for their fantasy film throwback The Slave and the Sorcerer, which is described as being a gory, practical-effects-filled, ’80s-inspired sword and sorcery horror film that will be like “Deathstalker meets The Evil Dead” – and to me that sounds like exactly the film the world needs right now! If you agree, you can secure a copy of the special edition Blu-ray through the Kickstarter campaign that Hex Studios is currently running. Depending on which reward tier you choose, you could also get your name in the credits of the film, or even land an on-screen role in the sequel, The Slave and the General.
Inspired by cult classics like Deathstalker, The Beastmaster, and (of course) The Sword and the Sorcerer, The Slave and the Sorcerer tells the following story: When Princess Meyra is kidnapped by the evil wizard Akaris, the slave Tyrol volunteers to lead...

The team over at Hex Studios is on a mission to “build a British horror & fantasy studio inspired by companies like Cannon, Hammer, and Aip,” and this week they’ve unleashed the official poster art for one of their projects. It’s titled The Slave & The Sorcerer, said to be a “practical-effects-laden sword & sorcery adventure” ripped straight out of the 1980s.
“Inspired by cult classics such as Deathstalker, The Beastmaster, and The Sword and the Sorcerer, the action-packed horror-fantasy is brimming with muscle-bound heroes, seductive sorceresses, and iconic villains true to the era. Also in the spirit of their inspirations, the team at Hex built an extensive dungeon set in their studio facility in Fife, Scotland, and have worked tirelessly to produce an array of horrifically gory practical effects to please even the most bloodthirsty horror fan.”

Albert Pyun’s 1982 fantasy adventure The Sword and the Sorcerer may not be the most fondly remembered epic of its era, but it was wildly successful. In the early 1980s, the sword and soccer genre experienced a revival, with Hollywood anticipating that Conan the Barbarian, Universal’s mega-budget adaptation of the Robert E. Howard pulp novels would be the next Star Wars. It didn’t quite happen, but before it even reached theaters, dozens of low-budget Conan riffs were in the works. One that hit theaters first was 1982’s The Sword and the Sorcerer, which grossed a spectacular (for the era) $39.1 million, actually outgrossing Conan in North America by 1 million dollars (at a fraction of the budget).

Albert Pyun was a beloved B-movie filmmaker who brought audiences a total of 52 films as a director and who recently passed away leaving two upcoming films seemingly unfinished. Looking at his career, the man knew how to create interesting and entertaining films to say the least. His first release was the 1982 film The Sword and the Sorcerer and his newest was the 2018 film Death Heads: Brain Dead. The man seemed unstoppable, and he will be very missed. To celebrate the man and his work, here are 5 of our favorite films from the Pyuniverse.

Kevin Spacey has booked his latest film project just weeks after winning a sexual battery lawsuit in the U.S., an individual with knowledge of the casting told TheWrap on Monday.
The two-time Oscar winner will voice a mysterious and murderous antagonist who takes control of a self-driving car, akin to Kiefer Sutherland’s vocal performance in Joel Schumacher’s “Phone Booth.”
The film, entitled “Control” and written and directed by Gene Falliaze, is about a British government minister, Stella Simmons (Lauren Metcalf), who has an affair with the Prime Minister (Mark Hampton). One night, Simmons heads home in her self-driving car to find the vehicle remotely hijacked by someone who knows her secret and wants to punish her.
Shooting will take place early next year at Camberwell Studios and on location in London, while Spacey will wrap his purely voice-over role this week. The actor recently won a 40 million...

Albert Pyun, the filmmaker behind cult favorite B-movies like "The Sword and the Sorcerer" and "Cyborg," died on Saturday 26 November, 2022, at the age of 69. Albert's wife, Cynthia Curnan, shared the news on social media, writing, "I sat with him for his last breath that sounded like he was releasing the weight of the world."
Per Variety, Pyun had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and dementia in recent years, but kept working on projects up until his death. "Its so rote. It's so part of my DNA. It's something I can do fairly effortlessly to keep my mind active," he told the Wall Street Journal in 2018.
While genre movies, and superhero movies in particular, currently dominate the box office and have nine-figure production budgets as standard, Pyun thrived in the arena of low-budget filmmaking. In a retrospective on his career, Pyun said that he worked on the 1993 B-movie "Arcade" for free,...

Albert Pyun, the prolific director of low-budget B-movies ranging from “The Sword and the Sorcerer” to “Cyborg” to a 1992 direct-to-video version of “Captain America,” died Saturday at age 69, according to a Facebook book from his wife and producer, Cynthia Curran.
“I sat with him for his last breath that sounded like he was releasing the weight of the world,” Curran wrote. Several years ago, Pyun was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and dementia.
Born in Hawaii, Pyun got his start in film after meeting Japanese star Toshiro Mifune, who brought him to Japan to intern on a TV series he was doing. After working as a commercial film editor for several years, then moved to Los Angeles and took his shot on the 1982 low-budget fantasy film called “The Sword and the Sorcerer.”
The film became a low-budget smash, grossing 39 million and earning Richard Lynch a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor.

James Winburn racked up around 80 credits during his career as a stuntman, but for genre fans there is one credit that really stands out from the pack: Winburn was the stunt double for iconic slasher Michael Myers in director John Carpenter‘s 1978 classic Halloween (watch it Here). In the moment where Dr. Loomis shoots Myers six times, sending him tumbling off a balcony, that’s Winburn performing the stunt. Sadly, it has been reported that Winburn passed away at the age of 85.
Winburn’s manager Peter DeLorme confirmed the news to TMZ, saying he passed away this past Saturday, November 19, in a Los Angeles hospital after a short illness. It was quite short, because Winburn attended a convention in the United Kingdom just three weeks ago. The company that put on that convention, which was called For the Love of Horror, said Winburn “was an absolute pleasure to work with...

TV didn’t always upend the horror formula; but when they would add a couple of different colors to the mix, the result was usually at least interesting. Such is the case with Deadly Messages (1985), which throws the whole palette at the screen for a very messy, but entertaining distraction.
Originally broadcast February 21st as part of The ABC Thursday Night Movie, the telefilm could not have picked a worse night to premiere: in addition to CBS’ solid lineup of Magnum, P.I. and Simon & Simon, NBC had the biggest block on the air – The Cosby Show/Family Ties/Cheers/Night Court. Oh well. For the six other people not watching that, they were left with a goofy and breezy murder mystery come Ouija board spookfest.
Let’s pull apart our sun kissed faux TV Guide and see what the spirits have to say:

Being a popular TV star can be a double edged antennae; great, steady income and national (sometimes international) fame. But the downside is you can become so popular that as a performer, what you’re known for is all you become known for, and it can be difficult to step beyond people’s perception. Such is the case with Elizabeth Montgomery, as the Bewitched actress took on the somber lead role in The Victim (1972), an entertaining little mystery that showed a welcome serious side to the star.
Originally broadcast on Tuesday, November 14th as an ABC Tuesday Movie of the Week, The Victim would have to go up against Hawaii Five-o and NBC’s own movie night; and while Jack Lord always won out, ABC had the particular market cornered for mystery and horror with The Victim being a fine addition to their roster.

Marvel movies are big business, from the Avengers franchise and all of the interconnected heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on screens both big and small, to Fox's ever-expanding world of the X-Men and Deadpool, to the Sony steered Spider-man movies, going all the way back to Sam Raimi's original trilogy. But that doesn't mean every big name actor and A list talent in Hollywood wants to be associated with these characters. Some heavyweight actors have straight up said no way when Marvel came knocking. I don’t know if you’re anything like me, but I can often spend hours upon hours trawling through iTunes looking for new movies to buy… Usually I’ll randomly come across a title I haven’t seen in years and use the “Cast & Crew” links to make my way down the rabbit hole to the more obscure side of Apple’s digital movie service.
Now whilst many will decry that iTunes is a terrible VOD service due to Apple’s desire to lock its audience to their platforms, if you have an Apple TV or iPad be aware – there are some truly obscure films hidden away in the depths of the vast collection of movies. Some of which have been made available in the UK for the first time since VHS and a Lot that have been added to the service in their original uncut form!

How did an 80s Van Damme action flick emerge from a failed Spider-Man movie and Masters Of The Universe sequel? Ryan takes a look...
Cannon Films was in deep trouble by 1987. Its boom years, between the late 70s to the mid-80s, were largely thanks to an eclectic and hurriedly-made collection of B-movies: Chuck Norris action pictures, Charles Bronson revenge flicks and lots of things with the word ‘ninja’ in the title.
Thanks to its outsider status and anything-for-a-buck approach to filmmaking, Cannon Films became a major name in Hollywood, the grinning faces of its brusque founders - producers Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus - frequently appearing in TV news reports and tinseltown trade papers.
But in the mid-80s, Golan and Globus began to change their strategy. While they would still make Death Wish sequels and Chuck Norris pics, they began to dabble in making more expensive films,...
