Italian maestro Fabio Frizzi has composed more than 100 scores over the course of his 50+ year career, including features, shorts, and television, but he’s most well known for his work with Italian horror legend Lucio Fulci. Intermittently since 2013, Frizzi has paid tribute to his late friend and frequent collaborator with a live band dubbed Frizzi 2 Fulci.
“Fulci started to give me this heritage, and I try to use it in the best way,” he told me at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Ma on September 17, where he was being honored with the Coolidge After Midnite Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the genre. The evening also included a Frizzi 2 Fulci concert and a midnight screening of Fulci’s Zombie.

We have a brand new trailer for Welcome to the Blumhouse. Announced last month, Blumhouse Productions, perhaps the go-to studio for genre programming in Hollywood these days, has partnered with Amazon Prime Video for a series of eight original horror movies that will arrive just in time for October. This trailer gives us a look at the first two double features coming our way next month. First up will be Black Box and The Lie, followed by Evil Eye and Nocturne.
The trailer offers but a glimpse of all these movies, giving us just a taste of what's to come. It is tough to get a true grip on any one story but we are presented with a parade of horrific images of all sorts. Psychological horror. Body horror. Blood. There is nothing if not a lot of variety offered here. It looks like a solid way to help fill...

Linda Perry’s career-establishing hit, the classic 4 Non Blondes song “What’s Up,” has been reimagined by Canadian musician FJØRA for the “Welcome to Blumhouse” trailer. “Welcome to Blumhouse” is a program of eight new Blumhouse-produced movies bowing on Prime Video Oct. 6, centering around family and love as redemptive or destructive forces.
The official trailer teases the first four films in the series “Evil Eye and “Nocturne”- Oct. 13 ) against FJØRA’s haunting vocals and dark reworking of the 1992 song.
Speaking with Variety, FJØRA and Perry discussed their collaboration and why the veteran singer-songwriter-producer thought FJØRA was the perfect artist to reimagine the song.
When Amazon and Blumhouse came to you asking to reimagine “What’s Up?,” what were some of the early conversations you had surrounding it?
Linda Perry: You have to completely abandon the song, and a lot of people are afraid to do that with a song like “What’s Up?...

I can’t always write about lesser known films. I mean I can, but I think it’s important to look at films known but not necessarily loved within their specific sub-genre. Case in point: Lucio Fulci’s The House by the Cemetery (1981), the last film in his loose “Gates of Hell” trilogy, and usually considered the least of the three. It certainly was by me - until my latest viewing, that is; while not epic in scope like The Beyond (‘80) or as atmospheric as City of the Living Dead, it has a straightforwardness that I find refreshing. As straightforward as Fulci can get, I suppose, in all his Fulci-ness.

When sharks became passé for Italian filmmakers, they turned their particular brand of aquatic horror towards its brethren—lest we think crocodiles don’t deserve their own bloody spotlight, we were bequeathed um, Killer Crocodile (1989), a fun Jaws homage with enough Italian charm to put it over. Needless to say, it arrives in a spiffy new Blu-ray from those purveyors of the weird and wonderful, Severin Films.
Fabrizio De Angelis’ (aka Larry Ludman) biggest claim in the horror world was producing some of Lucio Fulci’s biggest and well-known films; from Zombie (1979) through Manhattan Baby (1982) he helped Fulci realize his visions to worldwide success. Fabio Frizzi Announces the “Beyond Composers Cut Tour” Frizzi 2 Fulci: (Press Release) Fabio Frizzi is returning to North America to perfom the legendary score for “The Beyond.” “The Beyond” is a psychedelic, supernatural nightmare directed by the granddaddy of Italian splatter Lucio Fulci. The second film in Fulci’s "Gates of Hell" trilogy sandwiched between City of the Living Dead (1980) and The House by the Cemetery (1981), “The Beyond’s” loose narrative revolves around a Louisiana hotel which may in fact be one of the seven gates to hell. The movie is beloved by horror fans for its surrealistic imagery and gore-tastic set pieces, including gouged out eyes, face-eating spiders, reanimated corpses, and a bloodthirsty dog. Additionally, a composer’s cut of the score is being re-release in conjunction with the tour via Cadabra Records.

Fantaspoa's homage to Fabio Frizzi, the main composer for the legendary Italian horror filmmaker Lucio Fulci, came to an end on Sunday evening (May 24) with an intimate yet extraordinary concert by Frizzi himself at the Centro Santander Cultural. Around 80 persons were lucky enough to listen to a live tribute from Frizzi to Fulci, which lasted little more than one hour and basically functioned as a perfect resume of the collaborations of these Italian masters. Frizzi took the stage only accompanied by an acoustic guitar, a keyboard, a computer and his notes, while in the background images of several Fulci films were projected throughout the concert. After a brief introduction using the music from Manhattan Baby, Frizzi began the journey to the past by...

There are certain names that pop up time and time again with Italian exploitation – Lucio Fulci, Joe D’Amato, Umberto Lenzi – but there are Italian directors we wouldn’t dare tag with an exploitation label – Mario Bava, Dario Argento, Michele Soavi. Italian cinema is so brilliant because it deals with extremes. You can watch a film of Bava’s and appreciate his artistry, and then in the next step you can watch a film of D’Amato’s and wallow in filth.
There are a ton of films I could review in this article – including Beyond the Darkness, Cannibal Holocaust, Gestapo’s Last Orgy. However, those particular films keep coming up in my mandates as I write so many reviews on exploitation films. I wanted to concentrate on films that have maybe slipped through the net and pay them due attention.

Hardly anything in the world gives me as much pleasure as Italian horror movies. They just make me really happy. Even the really crappy ones like Manhattan Baby (directed by Lucio Fulci) or – heaven forbid – anything directed by Bruno Mattei. Yes, I will sit down to that man’s films. I love cannibals, I love zombies, i positively adore all sorts of Italian horror based mayhem. I am also a huge fan of Giallo movies, and as some of you may have read, I wrote an article rating the best Giallo movies a while back.
The line dividing Giallo and straight out horror often becomes blurred in Italian cinema. Take a film like Torso (The Bodies Bear Traces of Carnal Violence). On one level it is a typical Giallo concerning a murder-mystery – a who dunnit with a masked killer running around – one of the most obvious motifs in the Giallo genre.

Dardano Sachetti is a giallo and horror legend. He worked with Mario Bava, Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci on some of their most famous movies. Now the Italian legend has teamed up with an emerging horror director, Federico Zampaglione, to work on a new flick!
We received the press release earlier today and for genre fans this is pretty exciting news. No wonder Zampaglione was keeping his cards close to his chest when we interviewed him recently about his next project.
"The Director of 'Shadow', Federico Zampaglione, has announced that shooting on his new film will begin shortly entitled Tulpa, it will be, according to Zampaglione, "a very bloody and tense Italian thriller with some supernatural elements". Tulpa is written by the legendary screenwriter Dardano Sacchetti, who has worked with all the great Italian horror masters including Fulci, Bava and Argento.

UK gore and horror fans have real reason to rejoice as Lucio Fulci’s 1981 gut muncher “The House by the Cemetery” has at last been passed uncut by the dreaded BBFC. The film now returns to DVD in all its gruesome glory via Arrow Video as part of their Masters of Giallo series, and comes complete with trailers, a deleted scene and a pleasant, if not exactly earth shattering short feature on the legendary Italian director’s career. A fair amount of work has also gone into the packaging, with the original artwork being accompanied by some specially commissioned lurid art that nicely capture the spirit of the film. The film is set in New England, as the unfortunate Dr Boyle (Paolo Malco, also in Fulci’s notorious “New York Ripper”), his wife Lucy (Catriona MacColl, another Fulci and Italian horror veteran, also in “The Beyond” and “City of the...

From the moment I discovered the sick and twisted genius of The Gates of Hell (1980, aka City of the Living Dead), I knew I was a Lucio Fulci fan -- and a few weeks later (after experiencing the horror-geek heaven that is Fulci's Zombie (1979)), I knew I had to track down more of his movies. Over the intervening years I've seen and enjoyed (or seen and laughed at) movies with colorful titles like A Lizard in a Woman's Skin (1971), Don't Torture a Duckling (1972), The Psychic (1977), The Black Cat (1981), The Beyond (1981), The House by the Cemetery (1981), The New York Ripper (1982), Manhattan Baby (1982), Conquest (1983), and The New Gladiators (1984), which is cool for me because now I know a good deal about the...
