A Wedding That Goes Horribly Wrong Tells a Universal Story in Netflix’s First Nigerian TV Original ‘Blood Sisters’
Image
Nigeria’s entertainment industry, known as Nollywood, has been thriving for years — it’s the second biggest film industry after Hollywood — but a truly international, mainstream hit in the orbit of a “Squid Game” or “Money Heist” has so far been elusive.

For a long time, that’s boiled down to a proclivity for insular stories that couldn’t easily travel beyond Nigerian viewership, combined with low production values. But all of that is set to change as Nigerian storytelling targets a more global audience, and streaming backers like Netflix direct resources into premium programming from the country’s top producers.

Netflix’s first Nigerian original TV series, “Blood Sisters,” embodies the market potential that’s in store. The four-part thriller comes from prolific producer Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife Studios, and you’d be hard-pressed to walk away from its explosive premiere episode.

Set in Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city,...

New on Netflix: May 2022 Releases
Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Caleb McLaughlin, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, and Gaten Matarazzo in Stranger Things (2016)
As the undisputed king of streaming (for now at least), Netflix has enjoyed the presence of some major blockbusters. Now, with its list of new releases for May 2022, Netflix is bringing back one of its biggest ever hits.

Stranger Things season 4 “volume one” is set to premiere on May 27. It’s been a long wait for new episodes of this ’80s-tinged sci-fi/horror series and based on the trailers, the wait will have been well worth it. In this go-around, the kids of Hawkins (now high schoolers) will have to contend with the Upside Down once again to go along with the horrors of the Creel House.

While Stranger Things is the biggest Netflix original this month, it’s far from the only one. Mike Myers’ latest series The Pentaverate premieres on May 5 (fittingly: 5/5). Meanwhile The Lincoln Lawyer is set to arrive on May 13 followed by Love, Death & Robots Volume...

Netflix’s First Nigerian Original Series ‘Blood Sisters’ Unveils Trailer
Image
Netflix has released the trailer for its first original TV show out of Nigeria, “Blood Sisters.”

Produced by leading Nigerian production company EbonyLife Studios, founded by Mo Abudu, the four-part crime thriller directed by Biyi Bandele and Kenneth Gyang will launch globally on the streaming service on May 5. The show is Abudu’s latest project for Netflix as part of her multi-title deal with the platform.

Set in Lagos, “Blood Sisters” follows a Nigerian wedding where the bride — who is fed up of being beaten up by her partner — accidentally kills the groom the night before their big day. The show tackles themes of intra-family relationships, physical and substance abuse, love, commitment and relationships.

An official description bills “Blood Sisters” as “an ode to life in the city [of Lagos] as it brilliantly juxtaposes the various socio-economic divides in Africa’s most famous commercial and social hub.”

Multi-hyphenate talent Rosie Lourde’s career looks set to accelerate on the back of multiple deals for Romance on the Menu, her feature directing debut produced by the Steve Jaggi Company.

The romantic comedy starring Canadian Cindy Busby (Heartland) and Tim Ross was pre-sold to major European markets, premiered here as a Netflix Original film and has been acquired by an as yet-un-named streamer in the US.

Jub Clerc.

Two weeks ago Jub Clerc was scheduled to go into a writers’ room on the webseries Shady Ladeez in the remote community of Ngukurr in East Arnhem Land.

But knowing that the elderly and people with pre-disposed illnesses – “all my mob” – are most vulnerable to the coronavirus, the filmmaker cancelled the trip and instead took part via Skype for a much lower fee.

Two days later she got an email from Bunya Productions advising the inaugural Bunya Talent Indigenous Hub in Los Angeles, to which she and 12 other Indigenous practitioners had been invited, had been postponed.

“The opportunity to pitch a feature film idea to Netflix was super exciting but my decision to cancel on Ngukurr made it an easier pill to swallow,” Clerc, who made her TV directing debut on season 2 of the ABC’s The Heights, she tells If.

“I feel like one of the lucky ones though.

George Clooney
George Clooney movies: 15 greatest films, ranked worst to best, include ‘Up in the Air,’ ‘Michael Clayton,’ ‘The Descendants’
George Clooney
On May 6, 2019, double Oscar winner George Clooney will celebrate his 58th birthday. The actor has become one of the most successful people in his profession but despite family connections (his aunt was the late singer Rosemary Clooney), he struggled for years to make it as an actor.

After dropping out of college, Clooney would try his hand at acting. He struggled for a few years until finding a part on “E/R” in 1984. This wasn’t the “ER” that would make him a star 10 years later, but instead was a short-lived sitcom with the same name. In the decade between those shows, Clooney became known mostly for his track record of starring in an incredibly large number of pilots that weren’t picked up to be made into series. He would score a few successes with recurring roles on “The Facts of Life,” “Sisters” and “Roseanne,” but he would also...

From ‘Batwoman’ to ‘Evil,’ a Look at Pilot Season’s Buzziest Projects
With the WGA-Ata war fully raging, diversity discussions at the forefront of the industry and numerous new rivals entering the original-content game, there is arguably more pressure than ever on the broadcast networks to make the right call when it comes to pilot pickups.

Here’s what Variety’s insiders are saying about this season’s offerings.

ABC

On the comedy front, three female-led pilots look to charge ahead at ABC.

An untitled Hannah Simone project has enjoyed support within ABC from the start. Simone’s “Greatest American Hero” pilot at ABC last year was ultimately passed over, but she still has many supporters at the network.

Another hot prospect comes from writer Jessica Gao, fresh off an Emmy win for her work on “Rick and Morty.” Hopes for the untitled pilot are bolstered not only by Gao’s recent success but also by Brian Grazer serving as exec producer.

Criterion Collection: Sisters (1973) | Blu-ray Review
“What the Devil hath joined together, let no man cast asunder,” reads the gleefully blasphemous tagline of Brian De Palma’s 1973 horror film Sisters, the auteur’s first foray into his obsessive Hitchcockian homage landscapes as well as his breakthrough film (which was his seventh directorial effort). An early entry in the Criterion canon finally resurrected for Blu-ray, it stars a pre-Lois Lane Margot Kidder as a pair of French-Canadian Siamese twins whose physical separation causes significant psychological and physical distress. Although clearly modeled after key tenets from Vertigo and Rear Window (and features a Bernard Herrmann score rivaling the hysteric depths of his infamous Psycho overture), De Palma’s title also pre-dates the delicious body horror which came to characterize Cronenberg and even inspired a failed 2006 American indie remake (starring Lou Doillon and Chloe Sevigny as the juxtaposed women).…...

Star Wars Rebels season 2 episode 11 review: The Protector Of Concord Dawn

Star Wars: Rebels season two devotes another episode to Sabine, one that is willing to put several of its characters in danger...

This review contains spoilers.

2.11 The Protector Of Concord Dawn

Sabine’s story has been revealed very gradually, with pieces of her backstory slowly coming into view. That’s an unusual amount of interconnectedness for Rebels these days: the second season has tended more towards standalone episodes than a gradual arc. However, this season has been good at giving out Sabine’s story in particular in controlled amounts. That continues in The Protector of Concord Dawn, which finds the young Mandalorian back among her own people.

The Empire is harrassing the Outer Rim more and more, so Sabine suggests the Rebels use an out-of-the-way hyperspace route around Mandalorian colony, Concord Dawn. That requires talking to the factious Mandalorians who live there, whose aggressive response leaves...

Star Wars Rebels season 2 episode 7 review: Stealth Strike
facebook

Star Wars Rebels isn't spending the time it needs to on developing certain characters, as Stealth Strike shows...

This review contains spoilers.

2.7 Stealth Strike

The last few episodes of Star Wars: Rebels have focused on individual characters, giving a little more backstory to Hera and Sabine. Zeb is still relatively unknown, but Stealth Strike brings us back to Kanan and Ezra in an episode that shows how repetitive the series has been lately.

Kanan and Ezra have already starred in several good stories, although one of the best is still Rise Of The Old Masters, from early in season one. Last week, Sabine learned a lesson about friendship, and this week's episode combines the two ideas -- Jedi and friendship -- for a decent episode with some fan-pleasing visuals.

Pleasing fans is in no way a bad thing here. Familiar Rebels characters dressing up in stormtrooper...

Star Wars Rebels season 2 episode 6 review: Blood Sisters
facebook

google+

Sabine moves centre-stage in this week's Star Wars Rebels episode, which showcases a friendship critical to her history...

This review contains spoilers.

2.6 Blood Sisters

While last week’s episode of Star Wars: Rebels focused on Hera, this week gives us a look at Sabine in a similar way, sending her into a perilous flight with an old friend-turned-enemy. Ketsu Onyo, played with youthful energy by Gina Torres, helped Sabine escape the Imperial Academy on Mandalore and ushered her into the life of a bounty hunter. Now, the two find themselves competing to capture a Rebel droid bound for Bail Organa.

Blood Sisters hinges on the titular sisterhood. Although the two aren’t literally from the same family, they do have a lot of history, and if that relationship wasn’t convincing, the episode would feel flat. Instead, it does work, thanks in part to some unsubtle...

Blu-ray Review: 'Sisters'
★★★☆☆Made in 1973, a whole three years before his breakthrough Stephen King adaptation Carrie, Brian De Palma's Sisters (previously released as Blood Sisters in the UK and now available on DVD and Blu-ray through Arrow Video) begins with a mock quiz show called 'Peeping Tom', in which a female participant wins a set of steak knives. Right there, we have the key De Palma obsessions; voyeurism stabbed through with violence, all played out with a healthy slice of self-aware humour. This being De Palma, we also need the Hitchcock influence which - with a late score by Bernard Hermann - occasionally oversteps the mark into straight pastiche rather than nuanced, reverent homage.

Win Sisters on Dual format DVD + Blu-ray
To mark the release of Sisters on 28th April, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on Dual Format DVD and Blu-ray.

Before 1973, Brian De Palma was impossible to pigeonhole: he made comedies, political satires and openly experimental pieces. But with Sisters (originally released as Blood Sisters in the UK) he turned to the suspense thriller and discovered his natural home – and a style that would lead directly to later masterpieces like Carrie, Dressed to Kill and Blow Out.

When Danielle (Margot Kidder) meets potential boyfriend Philip (Lisle Wilson) after appearing on the TV show Peeping Toms (a nod to the Michael Powell shocker), she invites him home, only to attract the ire of her twin sister Dominique. From across the courtyard, Rear Window-style, reporter Grace (Jennifer Salt) witnesses Philip being murdered by one of the twins – but the police find no body or any physical evidence. Naturally,...

Looks like the team behind "Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters" wants to make one thing clear: It's not the new "Twilight" (although the series' gajillion fans are probably more than welcome to the show).

There's no denying the fact that the two young-adult book-to-film adaptations have a few obvious similarities — vampires, romance, femme protagonists — but to hear the filmmakers talk, "Vampire Academy" is in a league of its own. The film's first poster, which has premiered at Yahoo! Movies with a little motion action in the mix, signs that promise in blood.

The story follows Rose (Zoey Deutch), a 17-year-old half-vampire half-human girl, and her best friend Lissa (Lucy Fry), who just so happens to be a special Moroi vampire princess. Rose is a guardian-in-training who has sworn to protect Lissa from evil vampires called the Volturi the Striogoi. After being on the run for two years, the girls are caught and dragged back to St.

'Vampire Academy' Movie: Olga Kurylenko Takes a Bite Out of Headmistress Role
"Oblivion" co-star and former Bond Girl Olga Kurylenko has enrolled in "Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters," an adaptation of the latest supernatural young-adult craze. The "Vampire Academy" series takes place at St. Vladimir's Academy, and Kurylenko will play the thankless role of headmistress Kirova. If you thought regular high school was confusing and full of needless social constructs, wait until you get a load of St. Vlad's. There are good vampires (the Moroi), bad vampires (the Strigoi), and half-human guardians who are trained to protect the Moroi and stop the Strigoi (dhampirs). Our heroine, Rose, who is not too fond of Kirova, is a dhampir whose Bff is Lissa, queen of the vamps. While she's training to become a bad-ass guardian, Rose is also feeling some not-so-undead feelings for her teacher, Dimitri. Zoey Deutch, who played queen bee Emily Asher in "Beautiful Creatures," has signed on for the lead role of Rose.

CW’s early renewals; ‘Vampire Academy’ movie; AMC steers a ‘Terror’; ‘Shrinking Man’ reboot
One of the most unwavering networks –beyond CBS- is The CW. The mini network and its stable of cult like genre shows have been able to sustain good ratings in the all-important 18-34 demographic, at times beating last place NBC. So far, for the 2012-13 TV season, they’ve only canceled one show, the medical drama Emily Owens, MD. Now, the network has announced early pick-ups of freshman superhero show Arrow, The Vampire Diaries (which is headed into season five, with a potential spin-off called The Originals may be added) and Supernatural –which heads into season nine, becoming the networks longest running show behind Smallville. Beauty and the Beast is also likely to be renewed as well. But other shows like 90210, Nakita, and The Carrie Diaries remain questionable network until the network heads can look over the upcoming pilots.

Independent distributor The Weinstein Company has made its first foray into...

Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters Snags The Weinstein Company For Distribution
Though mostly known for producing movies with adult themes, most recently showcased in films such as Silver Linings Playbook and Inglourious Basterds, the Weinstein Company is adding some young adult fare into its upcoming slate of productions. Not only that, but it.s got vampires in it. It seems like a predictable more, sure, but teen vampire fiction is also a well-established and highly successful sub-sub-genre of films to invest in. Blood Sisters is the first in a series of six books, and has a spinoff series, Bloodlines, which will contain six novels when it.s finished its publishing run. The script was written by Daniel Waters (Heathers), brother of director Mark (Mean Girls).
