Few bands have made an impact on the modern alternative rock genre like Linkin Park has. Pioneering nu-metal rock bands like Korn, Faith No More, and Public Enemy helped pioneer the rising hip-hop-infused genre of the 1990s with the grunge and hard rock influences of groups like Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Stone Temple Pilots. Linkin Park became a result of these two decade-defining pools of rock on the heels of the pioneering electronic rock sound of Nine Inch Nails. Their 2000 debut album Hybrid Theory combined these influences and became one of the most emblematic LPs of the 21st century.
The group's 2003 sophomore effort, Meteroa, is one of the most purchased albums of the 21st century with more than 27 million copies sold worldwide. Although one of the oldest film festivals with significant focus on Asian cinema, here in Asian Movie Pulse, we had not exactly followed Hiff so intently. It was a rather pleasant occasion thus, that this year we started a rather closer collaboration, that was definitely fruitful, since the Asian selection was quite significant, including a number of world premieres. The Japanese and Taiwanese presence was the most significant, including Neo Sora‘s “HappyEnd“, one of the best films of the year, but the Filipinos were also here, headlined by Mikhail Red‘s newest work, “Friendly Fire“. Without further ado, here is the sum of our coverage, which is bound to become more significant next year.
1. Film Analysis: HappyEnd (2024) by Neo Sora
Neo Sora has shot a film that is rather multi-leveled, to the point that frequently it functions as parable/metaphor/allegory, with essentially all characters and events hiding some sort of symbolism.

For his latest work, Mikhail Red decided to focus on the world of Esports, which is becoming quite big in the Philippines. Based on the Filipino-designed shooter game, “Project Xandata” “Friendly Fire” also features Mlbb esports host Mara Aquino, cosplayer Alodia Gosiengfiao, and esports shoutcasters Rogyn “Osiris” Manansala and Aaron Paul Paragas “Burrito” Gaddi, in an effort to acquaint the ones who aren’t familiar with the particular world and to add some appeal to the ones already invested in it.
Friendly Fire is screening at Hawai’i International Film Festival
Filipino team Isla has recently lost their star player, who was signed by a Korean team, leaving their CEO Sonya Wilson in despair, as the two players that remain are definitely on a lower level. One night, though, as they are practicing, they stumble upon a player who kills both in the game with one shot, becoming an overnight sensation.

Linkin Park is reportedly considering reuniting with a female vocalist in place of late frontman Chester Bennington.
Billboard reports that the band is fielding offers for a potential tour and festival headlining dates to take place in 2025. The identity of the female vocalist is not known at this time.
Following Bennington’s death July 2017, Linkin Park went on a permanent hiatus. In the time since then, the band’s surviving members have only performed together once – at a tribute concert honoring Bennington that was held in October 2017.
Earlier this year, Linkin Park released a new greatest hits album called Papercuts, which contained a previously unheard song called “Friendly Fire” featuring vocals from Bennington. “Friendly Fire” subsequently hit No. 1 on the US Rock and Alternative Airplay chart.

Linkin Park have dropped a teaser for the unreleased song “Friendly Fire,” which features vocals by the late Chester Bennington.
The band shared a snippet of the track on its official X/Twitter account, describing it as a “new, unreleased song from the One More Light 2017 sessions.” Tragically, Bennington would take his own life just two months after the album’s May release that year.

Since its debut on CBS on September 11, 1967, there was something distinctively special about "The Carol Burnett Show." This sketch comedy series spanned 279 episodes during its initial run, featuring acclaimed performances and comedic skits that were witty, sharp, and heavy on detail. Every actor who was a part of the show slipped into the shoes of a variety of characters that still remain memorable, including Carol Burnett's Charwoman (her signature role), and her parody of silent-film actress Nora Desmond. Some sketches were parodies of classic films such as "Gone With The Wind" or "Sunset Boulevard," while others mimicked soap opera structures or commercial spoofs.
By 1977, the popularity of the show had spiked, leading to some of the outstanding sketches being re-edited into standalone programs compiled in "Carol Burnett and Friends," which mashed the best skits into half-hour episodes. While the show relied on guest stars such as Jim Nabors and...

So, did you ever wonder why Carol Burnett always tugs her ear? It was a way she could say “hi” to her beloved grandmother. The first time she did it was when she made her TV debut at 22 on the Dec. 17, 1955 episode of the popular “The Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney Show.” She played the girlfriend of the woody dummy. “The first song I sang on TV was ‘Over the Rainbow’ to Jerry Mahoney,” she noted in a 2016 L.A. Times interview with me. “I remember I called my grandmother to tell her I was going to be on television. Nanny said say hello to me. That’s when we came up with pulling my ear.”
Nearly seven decades later, Burnett is still tugging at her ear, singing and making people laugh And on April 26th, which is her 90th birthday, NBC is throwing her a celebration “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love.

Exclusive: The first-look deal is a commonplace occurrence in the world of television and film.
Such agreements are now coming to the podcasting business as Campside Media, the company behind the successful Chameleon franchise, has struck a trio of deals.
The business has closed deals with Believe Her creator Justine van der Leun, Sam Mullins, who is behind Wild Boys and Dr. Dante, and Sean Flynn, the man behing The Bering.
It marks a shift in direction for the relatively nascent audio medium, giving a podcast studio such as Campside a first look at projects that may have previously been shopped around, and giving creators an element of stability that hasn’t traditionally been present in podcasting.
Campside, which was established by long-form journalists Josh Dean, Vanessa Grigoriadias, Matt Shaer, and screenwriter/producer Adam Hoff in partnership with Chernobyl producer Sister, has produced nearly 30 shows over the last couple of...

Greta Van Fleet frontman Josh Kiszka was sleeping in during a rare day off in December when his phone suddenly started blowing up. “I didn’t put together what was happening,” he says. “I thought the pope had died or something.” Pope Francis was fine, but Greta Van Fleet had just been nominated for four Grammys, all related to their 2017 EPs Black Smoke Rising and Friendly Fire. “These are some of the first songs we ever released,” says Kiszka. “So it’s kind of shocking. I didn’t expect us to get any nominations.

Is getting justice for the murder of one man worth breaking the military cone of silence?
On Chicago Justice Season 1 Episode 5, Peter thought so and was even willing to risk his job for it.
The murder victim's father chalked it up to Peter not understanding how it works because he hadn't served. When Peter found a way to get what he wanted, Jeffries had to grudgingly admit he was correct.
Who was right in this case?
Moral dilemmas seem to be one of the things Chicago Justice does best, and I was excited about this particular one.
It was hard not to agree with Peter when he wanted justice for a man murdered because he wanted to tell the truth, and his argument for government transparency is especially appealing in the current political climate.
As Jeffries pointed out, there are certainly times when it doesn't make sense to tell the truth,...

UnREAL really knows how to do a season finale.
On UnREAL Season 2 Episode 10, Rachel tried her best to make sure Coleman and Yael couldn't take their information about the secrets from Everlasting public.
Might that have been the first time Rachel didn't find a way to manipulate her way to the top? Jeremy's return was a shock. It really was.
Who would have thought Jeremy would be the one to save the day? After everything he did to Rachel, it's clear where his loyalty lies.
I can't be the only one who guessed there was going to be some sort of car crash in store for Yael and Coleman. The speed they were driving made it even more obvious.
It would have been an intriguing twist to have had Coleman and Rachel reveal the truth about Everlasting. It would have left things up in the air until next summer, but...

What do day dreaming samurais on Tatooine, the Pirates of Dark Water, Cybermen, Gambit, Alex Rodriguez, Musashi, Kinopio, woodland elves and Dick Cheney all have in common? Absolutely nothing to the average focus group. But to Gearbox Software, those fun-loving dreamers behind Borderlands, it’s the makings of a new shooter mash-up, entitled Battleborn. We got a chance to get an early view of this game in pre-alpha.
Battleborn is designed as a cooperative and competitive shooter, complete with pirates, swordsmen, elves, steroid freaks, mushroom killers and piss-on-the-poor, upper class assassins. The goal is to take just about every character class and archetype from fantasy, sci-fi, steampunk fiction or otherwise and put them all together in a universe where it makes sense for them to coexist – even if it’s in disharmony with one another.
Of course, under-the-hood of every multiplayer shooter, there’s a little story behind the magic...

Blacklisted screenwriter and president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
The screenwriter Fay Kanin, who has died aged 95, was the only female president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in its 86-year history (apart from Bette Davis, who resigned after two months in 1941). She served as president from 1979 to 1983, for the maximum of four consecutive one-year terms. Kanin, who committed herself to the preservation of early Hollywood movies, was first elected president by a board consisting of 34 men and one woman.
"I'm a big feminist," she declared at the time that her play Goodbye, My Fancy opened on Broadway in 1948. "I've put into my play my feeling that women should never back away from life." The serious comedy, with Madeleine Carroll as a powerful congresswoman revisiting her alma mater to receive an honorary degree, ran for more than a year and was made into a 1951 film starring Joan Crawford.
