A movie ahead of it's time!!!!!!!!!

Friends Christopher Mitchum and Les Lannom buy A 1964 stingray filled with dope and lots of loot, put there by two crooks after killing A stoolie. Now Sherry Jackson and her goons go after Mitchum and Lannom, shooting anyone who gets in their way.Very violent, but overall it's A great car chase,action/comedy flick that was up there with other low budget, car chase films like Gone in 60 seconds and Roger Corman's Moving Violations. Christopher Mitchum and Sherry Jackson (Who by the way is good looking),is good for their roles.A must for those who are into action movies.

    Needs to be on DVD

The previous poster succinctly and successfully described the plot of a movie that is what show business should be today. The one liners from "icy calm" Lonnigan are priceless and the driving is superb. Jerry Taylor, the director, did it right when he put the long Stingray chase scene to the beat of the unknown country song "Hi Gear" sung by Gerry Riopelle. "We won't be slowing down because we're driving these wheels into the ground" This film is a must see and should be stored on DVD!!!!

    Should be available in U.S.

There are some ways to get a DVD of this film. Since there is no more message boards, I"m giving some PAL format versions. There are two being sold on Ebay. One from Germany and one from England. Any true movie enthusiast should have that capability on a machine, so it's not all that hard to acquire it.

Red 63 Corvette Stingray chased all over St. Louis .........

With what feels like a semi improvised script, "Stingray" is essentially one long car chase. There are some pretty nice stunts along with the requisite police car destruction, and a few pretty tepid explosions. The cast is likable, the acting not so likable, and there are at least a bunch of laugh out loud moments. For an exploitation film with zero nudity, the rest has to be entertaining, and "Stingray" is fast enough moving that interest is for the most part maintained. I will say that the film didn't end where I thought it would, but getting in some nice St. Louis / Mississippi River footage wasn't that bad a bonus. For an action comedy you could do a lot worse than this drive in low budget effort. - MERK

An oddball comedy with chase scenes and gunfire

This regional take on cops vs. Robbers vs. Good guys actually pays off pretty well. Two drug punks kill two men who attempted to set them up on a drug deal. They escape with the money and drugs and are forced to stash it in a Corvette Stingray of all places. Two pals (Al and Elmo) purchase the car and the crooks chase after them, as well as a slew of clueless cops who are trying to make sense of the situation.

Written, edited, and directed by Richard Taylor, this harmless comedy with violent undertones works well thanks to its casting: Christopher Mitchum, Sherry Jackson, Les Lannom, William Watson, Cliff Emmich, and Playboy playmate Sondra Theodore. The car chases are structured rather simply, despite that the film's stunt coordinator was none other than old-timer Carey Loftin. The one-liners, most of them supplied by Watson, are actually pretty funny, as well.

    • Trivia
For the 40th Anniversary, the film was rescued from director Richard Taylor's garage and restored for a one night special screening at the Wildey Theater, located in the city most of the movie was shot - Edwardsville Illinois. Some cast and crew were in attendance, and the sold out audience all received a free limited Blu Ray of the film created especially for the event. Dubbed the "Garage Edition," every single copy was personally autographed by film villain Sherry Jackson. The HD restoration, Q&A from the event, new interviews, and other unique extras were later collected in an official Blu Ray release in 2021 from Dark Force Entertainment.

Lonigan says to Tony, "You tell your grandchildren about this one friend, Ole Lonigan on 4 cylinders caught a Corvette of a pro". Lonigan's character drove a 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu, which was never made with a 4 cylinder engine.

Lonigan: [after meeting Kruger and his crony] Just like in the movies.

    • Crazy credits
The first set of opening credits at the beginning is accompanied by a red shade that lights up and glows in-sync with the engine starting/revving.
    • Alternate versions
The original director's cut of the movie (which was restored last year for its 40th anniversary) included two additional dialogue scenes and extra shots not found in the theatrical version. The first one has Elmo in a gas station bathroom counting the bags of heroin he found in the Corvette earlier in the movie and the second is an extended scene where Al, Elmo, and the hitchhiker are waiting in a nearby office for the new paint job to be done and the hitchhiker tries to persuade Elmo not to peddle the heroin for money. The original cut also included the graphic death scenes that had to be edited down for a PG rating.
