George Lucas and 20th Century-Fox sued the producers over alleged similarities with Star Wars: Épisode IV - Un nouvel espoir (1977). The show was re-worked from its original pilot to capitalize on the film's popularity, employing the same special effects team and the same concept designer. The lawsuit was dismissed in 1980, Fox appealed, and the case was settled out of court in 1983.

Goofs
The battle tactic of the Cylons is usually to swoop down on the target in a row, one after the other. On the green radar screen, they are always shown closing in on a wide front, regardless of the formation actually employed.

one of my favorites

Yeah yeah, so it may be considered a Star Wars ripoff by some. Who cares? As a kid in the 70's, I loved nothing more than the movie and then the subsequent ABC TV series especially with all of the special effects that kids love to see after Star Wars came out. And when the Scifi Channel started to show the series again, I couldn't get enough of it. An underappreciated scifi series in my opinion.
