Why Burt Reynolds Regretted His Gangster Movie Flop With Clint Eastwood
Image
Bringing two movie stars together to do a buddy action flick has been one of Hollywood's greatest traditions. The appeal of these movies is watching personalities butt heads with each other until differences lead to a genuine comradery in the end. "48 Hrs," "Lethal Weapon," "Hot Fuzz" and "The Nice Guys" are but a few examples of the kinds of chaotic screen duos that we still talk about today. You would think that a gangster buddy flick starring Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds would be more fondly remembered, but it currently exists as an oddity that never took off in the way either of them wanted it to.

On paper, the 1930's-set "City Heat" sounds like a fun idea. Eastwood plays Speer, a Kansas City police Lieutenant who finds himself in quite a predicament when Reynold's Mike Murphy, a cop turned private eye, waltzes back in his life. The gist...

Natasha Lyonne reveals Poker Face season 2's unexpected voice cameo you might have missed
Image
If you have been watching Poker Face season 2, you might have recognized Charlie’s “Good Buddy.” The man Natasha Lyonne’s amateur sleuth Charlie talks to on her Cb radio is none other than Fargo actor Steve Buscemi.

As Lyonne told TVLine, her and Buscemi go way back as native New Yorkers: “He cut me out of a movie he directed called Animal Factory back in 1998. I played ‘Girlfriend.’ We joke about it to this day.” Lyonne says the team behind the show initially approached Buscemi to direct an episode of Poker Face, and while he was unavailable to work on the sophomore season, “he was available to be Good Buddy.”

Buscemi is one of many famous actors who appear throughout season 2 of Poker Face. Cynthia Erivo, Giancarlo Esposito, Katie Holmes, and John Mulaney are just some of the numerous guest stars who will pop up throughout Charlie’s adventures.

‘Poker Face’ Showrunner Tony Tost Talks Throwing Out the Rule Book for Season 2 in Big Episode 3 Twist
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Poker Face” Season 2, Episode 3.

Any “Poker Face” fan would have expected the second installment of the Rian Johnson-created series to play out in a similar way to last season: Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie Cale travels across the country in her Plymouth Barracuda solving murders before the finale sees her come face-to-face with the current antagonist.

But, instead, “Poker Face” threw out the rule book and eliminated the threat looming over Charlie from mob boss Beatrix Hasp (Rhea Perlman) in just the third episode of the season with an FBI string gone wrong that puts Beatrix into witness protection and Charlie without a hit on her head.

“When we started talking about different options of a … through-line, I don’t think any of them really excited us creatively,” showrunner Tony Tost told TheWrap. “We’re under that assumption that you have this big bad...

4 movies new to Netflix that you need to watch this week
Image
A new month for you means many new movies and series on Netflix. Your favorite streamer starts every month strong, and April is no different. There are older movies to see, new thrillers, and anything you might want to watch.

Heck, there are even the first Smokey and the Bandit films. Have they aged well? You will have to watch them for yourself and judge.

There are also several films that are just silly fun. That makes sense as the month starts with April Fools Day. If you can't watch something funny then, when can you?

Four movies that are new to Netflix in April you need to watch this weekHeat

This film seemed too contrived, at least as far as the cast was concerned. How could it not be a hit when viewers got to see Al Pacino and Robert De Niro together for the first time? They were...

Taylor Sheridan bringing The Cannonball Run series to Paramount+?
Image
Four years after bringing the world the high speed comedy classic Smokey and the Bandit (and three years after their stuntman comedy Hooper and one year after Smokey and the Bandit II), director Hal Needham and star Burt Reynolds teamed up again for another high speed comedy, the goofball ensemble film The Cannonball Run. The film was a big hit, the sixth highest-grossing domestic film of 1981, and it was followed by a pair of less successful sequels, Cannonball Run II (1983) and Speed Zone (1989). Even though the follow-ups aren’t highly regarded, The Cannonball Run is still a well-known title, which is why we’ve been hearing rumblings of a remake for years. Now, industry scooper Jeff Sneider of The InSneider reports that Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan is likely to be the one to finally bring The Cannonball Run back to the screen, as his production company, Bosque Ranch, is developing...

Burt Reynolds’ Heartbreaking 'Boogie NIghts' Oscar Loss Changed His Career
Image
Burt Reynolds achieved feature-film stardom and a large measure of credibility with his powerful dramatic performance in the 1972 thriller film Deliverance. Reynolds’ charm and sex appeal were effectively showcased throughout the rest of the decade in films like Hooper, The Longest Yard, Smokey and the Bandit, and Starting Over, which pleased audiences and critics alike while establishing Reynolds as an immensely likable star who was equally adept at action and comedy.

However, in the early 1980s, the good-old-boy image that led Reynolds to be voted Hollywood’s top box-office draw for a record five consecutive years between 1978 and 1982 reached a point of diminishing returns. His unsuccessful pairing with Clint Eastwood in the 1984 action film City Heat marked a precipice in his career from which he never regained his former star power. In the late 1980s, Reynolds made an ignominious return to television, where his career began in the early 1960s.

How Burt Reynolds Really Felt About His Gunsmoke Co-Star James Arness
Image
The late Burt Reynolds was a connoisseur of strong opinions. The man was known for speaking his mind, and what was on his mind was often unpredictable, entertaining, offensive, or otherwise wild. There was, for instance, that time he complained about the work of a then-up-and-coming Paul Thomas Anderson throughout the filming of "Boogie Nights," supposedly firing his agent because he hated the movie so much and only (slightly) changing his tune once he earned an Oscar nomination for his role. His opinions were just as colorful when it came to Greta Garbo (Per The Sun: she had "beautiful breasts"), Ingmar Bergman (To Esquire: "I'd rather be shot in the leg than watch an Ingmar Bergman picture"), and countless other celebrities with whom he crossed paths over his decades-long career.

With his reputation for airing grievances in mind, you'd be forgiven for imagining some beef might have existed between Reynolds...

10 Best Burt Reynolds Movies, Ranked
Image
Burt Reynolds was one of the effortlessly cool actors of his generation. His rugged charm, mischievous smile, and undeniable screen presence earned him a huge fan following. Rising to fame in the 1970s, Reynolds became a bona fide box office powerhouse. By some measures, he was, for a while, perhaps the biggest movie star on the planet. While most remember him for his high-speed chases and devil-may-care attitude in films like Smokey and the Bandit, his career also included some more diverse performances that proved he was more than just a leading man.

Charles Shyer’s first film credit – after penning episodes of The Odd Couple and Happy Days – came with 1977’s Smokey and the Bandit, lending to what would become a fast-paced, quip-filled comedy that would be one of the highest-grossing movies of the year. Shyer would garner more industry attention with the following year’s House Calls, sharing a WGA nomination.

He would go on to win a Writers Guild of America Award for Private Benjamin, which found Goldie Hawn as a privileged 20-something who joins the army. Boogie Nights Cast: Every Actor & Adult Film Industry Cameo
Image
Boogie Nights takes place in the world of adult entertainment. Paul Thomas Anderson's 1997 classic stars Mark Wahlberg as Dirk Diggler, a California native who became a well-known adult film actor in the San Fernando Valley during the '70s. Recognizable actors portray most characters, but several real-life adult film stars make cameos in small roles. Before Boogie Nights, Mark Wahlberg had already established an impressive resume in the entertainment industry, but this movie made him a star.

Boogie Nights transformed Wahlberg into a mainstream movie star, thanks in large part to his tragicomic lead performance and a climactic scene that literally exposes the film's lead character, Dirk Diggler. However, what many P.T. Anderson fans remember is that this film is full of character actors who would go on to appear in several of the director's movies over the next two decades, some in lead roles and others always working as brilliant supporting actors.

Jim Abrahams, ‘Airplane!,’ ‘Naked Gun’ and ‘Hot Shots!’ Master of Mirth, Dies at 80
Image
Jim Abrahams, the writer-director who with brothers Jerry and David Zucker turned the comedy genre on its ear with such zany efforts as Airplane!, Police Squad! and The Naked Gun films, died Tuesday. He was 80.

Abrahams died of natural causes at his home in Santa Monica, his son Joseph told The Hollywood Reporter.

The trio made their first mainstream impression by writing the sketch-filled Kentucky Fried Movie (1977), directed by John Landis in his prelude to Animal House, and they also combined for Top Secret! (1984), starring a young Val Kilmer, and Ruthless People (1986), featuring Bette Midler and Danny DeVito.

Without his childhood buddies from Wisconsin, Abrahams directed Big Business (1988), starring Midler and Lily Tomlin, and co-wrote and helmed Hot Shots! (1991) and its 1993 sequel, both starring Charlie Sheen.

Joke-filled and laden with sight gags and puns, the humor of Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker, or Zaz as they came to be known, was fast,...

40 Years Ago, Clint Eastwood Teamed With Another Hollywood Icon For One Of Their Biggest Misfires
Image
In 1984, Clint Eastwood teamed with another screen icon for City Heat, which became one of the star's biggest disappointments. While Eastwood has worked non-stop since the 1950s, it's fair to say the 1980s was one of his weaker decades. If anything, the reception to City Heat is emblematic of his spotty record during the decade. Outside of Clint resurrecting the Western genre with Pale Rider in 1985 or helming his own favorite movie, Bronco Billy, much of his output like would-be blockbuster Firefox or lame action-comedy Pink Cadillac proved very disappointing.

Regardless of the tepid critical response to his '80s output, Eastwood was still a major box-office draw. The best example of this is the fourth Dirty Harry movie, Sudden Impact. Despite only earning 51% from critics (via Rotten Tomatoes), this sequel was one of Clint's biggest hits of the decade, nabbing over $67 million worldwide. Eastwood followed up with City Heat,...

Jason Statham Remade Two Movies By This Hollywood Legend (But Their Only Movie Together Sucked)
Image
Jason Statham remade not one, but two movies by Hollywood icon Burt Reynolds - it's just a shame their only collaboration sucked so much. Despite making his name in Guy Ritchie gangster comedies, Statham soon made a dramatic gear shift in his career. The Jason Statham action movie era began in earnest with 2001's Ghosts of Mars, but it was The Transporter that proved his big breakthrough. Like any leading man, he has had his peaks and valleys, but the box office success of The Beekeeper proves Statham is still on top of his game.

He has remade several cult classics in the action genre too. Statham fronted the remake of Charle Bronson's The Mechanic and played the lead in the reboot of the Death Race franchise. One of the earliest remakes young Statham appeared in was Mean Machine, where he played a violent prisoner named Monk who takes part...

Hammer Down: Idris Elba to star in truck driver action thriller
Image
My father was a truck driver, as was his father before him, so I have spent some time in “the trucker world” and have a soft spot for movies that involve truck drivers – so, yes, Smokey and the Bandit is one of my all-time-favorite and most-watched movies. This is why I’m hyped to hear that Idris Elba of Luther, Hobbs & Shaw, and The Suicide Squad, among many other credits, has signed on to play a truck driver in the upcoming high octane action thriller Hammer Down!

Simon Hatt, who has served as an associate producer, executive producer, and co-producer on various James Gunn projects, including The Suicide Squad, will be making his feature directorial debut with this film. Hatt has also written the screenplay for Hammer Down, which is based on his 2020 short film (it had a running time of 13 minutes) with the same title. The short version starred...

The Game Show Moment That Helped Introduce An Unknown Jimmy Carter To America
Image
Jimmy Carter, who turned 100 today, was governor of Georgia in 1973, but on the national stage, he was still Jimmy who?

As he prepared for a longshot bid for the presidency in 1976, he and his advisers were already laying the groundwork that year, which included developing a national profile by non-traditional means, which meant a game show.

What’s My Line? had been on the air for nearly 25 years as one of the producer Goodson Todman’s most popular panel game shows, in which a celebrity panel tried to guess the occupation of a guest. Typical programs were highlighted by a celebrity “mystery guest,” which required the panel to wear a blindfold to avoid instant recognition.

But when Carter’s office called the show suggesting him as a guest, the casting director agreed on the condition that he appear as “a Mr. X with the panel unmasked,” according to executive producer...

Marlon Brando: ‘He worships at the temple of his own narcissism’ on One Actor Who Almost Made Him Quit The Godfather in Rage
Image
Marlon Brando was, unarguably, one of the most celebrated actors of all time, but he was also notorious for being a not-so-easy personality to work with, especially during the latter stages of his career. While his seemingly irrational demands and ways of operating (which involved strapping cue cards to sets) were one thing, he was also infamous for clashing with some other actors.

Michael Corleone in The Godfather. | Credits: Paramount Pictures.

For one, Brando had a famous feud with one other thoroughly commended actor who left the world a little time after him: Burt Reynolds. As it turns out, Brando was involved in what was a rather one-sided rivalry with Reynolds during the height of the latter’s career, which even had him nearly quitting his all-time best The Godfather in rage had it brought Reynolds into the cast!

Image
Prolific actress Sally Field has returned to the world of social media, saying Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has restored her hope after Donald Trump used the digital platforms as “public toilet paper.”

“I’ve not been on social media,” the two-time Oscar winner said in a post on Instagram made prior to the weekend. “Not since it became public toilet paper for our former crook of a President.” She added, referencing Michelle Obama‘s words at the Democratic National Convention, “But ‘hope is making a comeback.’ So here I am. This is me. And this is my dog, Dash. Buckle up.”

In a follow-up post made two days ago, the Norma Rae star is shown in front of the television, which depicts MSNBC‘s coverage of Kamala Harris’ DNC speech. “Hope is here. Right in the room with me and my 18-year-old newly registered to vote grandson,” she wrote...

Sally Field to Star in ‘Remarkably Bright Creatures’ Adaptation for Netflix
Image
Sally Field is in talks to star in “Remarkably Bright Creatures,” a film adaptation of the novel by Shelby Van Pelt.

Netflix has acquired the project, which is in early stages of development. Olivia Newman, the filmmaker of last summer’s sleeper hit “Where the Crawdads Sing,” is directing the movie. “Where the Crawdads Sing,” starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, was based on the best-selling novel by Delia Owens and grossed $144 million at the global box office. Newman is also co-writing the screenplay with John Whittington.

Netflix declined to comment.

“Remarkably Bright Creatures,” Van Pelt’s debut novel, was released in 2022 and became a best-seller. The story follows a lonely widow’s unlikely friendship with a giant octopus. After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she begins working the night shift as a janitor at a local aquarium. Kim Kahana, Stuntman Who Starred in ‘Danger Island’ and Doubled for Charles Bronson, Dies at 94
Image
Kim Kahana, the stunt performer, teacher, coordinator and war hero who played Chongo on the kids show Danger Island and doubled for Charles Bronson in several action films, has died. He was 94.

Kahana died Monday of natural causes at his home in Groveland, Florida, his wife, Sandy Kahana, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Kahana, 5-foot-7 and 150 pounds, taught stunts to many thousands of students since the mid-1970s in six-week courses that took place in Chatsworth, California, and Central Florida. Many went on to have thriving careers in show business.

He also had six different black belt degrees — he taught martial arts, too — and worked as a professional bodyguard protecting Hollywood types.

A native of Hawaii, Kahana appeared in his first film as a biker in the Marlon Brando-starring The Wild One (1953) and was an extra in other movies before he realized that stunt performers got paid more than he did.

Stars: Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Hannah Waddingham, Teresa Palmer, Stephanie Hsu, Winston Duke, Ben Knight, Matuse, Adam Dunn | Written by Drew Pearce | Directed by David Leitch

Stunts have been at the forefront of cinema since the beginning. Some of the earliest directors, actors, and writers were the very best stunt performers. Think Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, and Harold Lloyd. Their influence can be seen across the history of cinema, from bridge jumps in Smokey and the Bandit, to lorry flips in The Dark Knight, shopping centre jumps in Police Story, to jumping off cliffs in the latest Mission Impossible. Stunts are in every action movie and ingrained in the very fabric of the art form – why it’s not yet recognised by the academy is a mystery, but David Leitch and his talented cast and crew look set on solving the mystery by putting a spotlight on those stunt performers.

Awfully Good Movies: Cannonball Run II
George Miller
Nearly ten years after director George Miller returned to the post-apocalyptic wasteland and redefined the action genre with Mad Max: Fury Road, the Australian auteur returned to replace Charlize Theron with Anya Taylor Joy to tell the origin story of the warrior who helped Mad Max cross that fury road in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. And regardless of how underwhelming its box office may be, this high octane prequel will surely stand the test of time alongside the rest of the Mad Max saga, certainly more so than another follow-up from Warner Bros. to a car racing franchise way back in 1984, when the late great Burt Reynolds bid farewell to the formula comedy genre that made him a superstar alongside an all-star cast (Jackie Chan! Frank Sinatra! Tony Danza!) with Cannonball Run II.

The original Cannonball Run was just one of many hit movies between Burt and his stuntman...

With ‘FBI: Most Wanted,’ Emmy Nominee Declan Mulvey Makes an Action Movie Every Week
Image
If the 1970s and ’80s represented a golden age of kinetic but grounded stunt work by pioneers like Hal Needham, Buddy Joe Hooker, and Vic Armstrong, the 2020s are proving to be a seminal moment for stunts in television. The urban action that used to be the bread and butter of Walter Hill, Richard Donner, and Peter Hyams has migrated from the big screen (now dominated by more visual effects-oriented set pieces) to network procedurals and streaming series where stunt coordinators have become adept at creating spectacular moments on tight schedules — all while keeping the performers and crew as safe as possible.

Since its 2020 debut, Dick Wolf’s CBS series “FBI: Most Wanted” has consistently showcased some of the best stunt work on television, with expertly choreographed action sequences that are realistic, thrilling, and heavily slanted toward practical effects. Season 5 included some of the show’s most dynamic set pieces to date,...

Why Burt Reynolds Was the Most Despised Man in Hollywood
Image
Burt Reynolds' career was equally prolific as it was tumultuous, marked by a series of feuds and conflicts with various individuals in the entertainment industry. His relationships with fellow actors, directors, and critics were typically strained, leading to a reputation for being difficult to work with. Reynolds' personality and lack of respect for others in the industry contributed to his struggles to maintain lasting relationships and professional collaborations. Despite his success as an actor, his self-destructive personality and contentious nature ultimately left a lasting impact on his career and personal life.

At a juncture in the '70s, Burt Reynolds was the biggest, most recognizable star on the planet for his wit and sparking personality, universally beloved. That is, just as long as you weren't a dues-paying SAG-AFTRA member. That's a good example of how public perception and personal working relationships don't always sync up. Deep within the inner sphere of Hollywood,...

Clint Eastwood's Worst Rated Movie Was Still a Box Office Success

Quick Links Philo Beddoe Is Clint Eastwood's Craziest Role Clint Eastwood Turned Monkey Business Into Box-Office Gold This 1989 Flop Made Eastwood Quit Comedy Clint Eastwood's venture into comedy paid off from a financial perspective, with Every Which Way But Loose being his first film to cross the $100 million mark at the domestic box office. Clyde the orangutan steals the show, showcasing a deeply personal and touching relationship with Philo Beddoe and bringing hilarity to the sequel. After the critical failure of Any Which Way You Can, Eastwood never ventured back into straight comedy, retreating to his stoic on-screen persona.

Clint Eastwood has always had a dry sense of humor as an actor, especially in the Dirty Harry films, which charmingly edge close to parody through his ability and willingness to poke sly fun at his incomparable screen persona while maintaining an air of competence and strength. Proof of Concept Announces First Class of Filmmakers
Image
Proof of Concept, an accelerator program supporting women, trans and nonbinary filmmakers founded by Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, producer Coco Francini and Dr. Stacy L. Smith, has set its inaugural class of filmmakers.

Proof of Concept was created after Dirty Films partners Blanchett and Francini met Smith at a Kering Women in Motion talk during last year’s Cannes Film Festival. On Monday, the trio reunited to discuss the progress they’ve made in building the new program, which was announced in December 2023 with the mission to support an inaugural class of 8 emerging filmmakers.

Among the updates shared was that the trio and their all-star selection committee — Chloé Zhao, Emma Corrin, Eva Longoria, Greta Gerwig, Jane Campion, Janicza Bravo, Lily Gladstone and Lilly Wachowski — had made their final selections out of more than 1,200 applications. They also announced that with the support of the Netflix Fund for Creative Equity, the program...

'The Movie Critic' Joins a Long, Long List of Unmade Quentin Tarantino Movies
Image
With the announcement that Quentin Tarantino is no longer proceeding with The Movie Critic, the film has now joined a fraternity of Tarantino films that will never see the light of day. Ever since he was a teenager, filmmaking has been his passion of his. He wrote one of his first screenplays, an adaptation of 1977’s Smokey and the Bandit, when he was just 14 years old, and he began his journey in Hollywood as a production assistant in 1986, when he was just 23 years old. A year later, Tarantino would co-write, co-produce, edit, and direct My Best Friend’s Birthday, a comedy shot in black-in-white that has remained unfinished for the past 37 years. The unfinished nature of that film has become sort of a hallmark for Tarantino. Although he has gone on to be the mastermind behind such classics as Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood thanks...

Burt Reynolds' Clash With A Renowned Director Involved A Ridiculous Irish Accent
Image
Burt Reynolds passed away five years ago, yet the legend of the actor, sex symbol, and famous mustache-wearer continues to grow even now. The most recent Reynolds anecdote to circulate comes courtesy of "Boogie Nights," where the "Smokey and the Bandit" star infamously clashed with a then 27-year-old Paul Thomas Anderson.

Stories of Reynolds' displeasure with the filming experience on the 1997 porn-centric comedic drama are widely known by now, and The Washington Post even reported once that he fired his agent after doing the film. In an interview with GQ in 2015, Reynolds admitted that he'd be hesitant to work with Anderson -- who earned a Best Writing Oscar nomination for "Boogie Nights," and 10 additional nominations since -- again. As Reynolds put it, "Personality-wise, we didn't fit." At the time, the actor didn't mince words, saying that during the "Boogie Nights" shoot he found Anderson "young and full of himself" and...

Netflix’s New Releases Coming in April 2024
Image
A car crash interview with a delusional prince, a new series adaptation featuring Patricia Highsmith’s most infamous creation, the second part of Zack Snyder’s pricey space opera and a paranormal detective show set within Neil Gaiman’s celebrated Sandman universe are among the big titles hitting Netflix in April.

Debuting April 4 is Ripley, Netflix’s glossy new take on Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley.
