      A Masterpiece

Ghatashradha (The Ritual) is Kannada language movie, directed by Legendary Girish Kasaravalli. Its based on Jnanapeeth award winner U.R.Ananthamurthy's short story.

The film was set in 1920s and depicts a rural village in Karnataka, where a young widow, the daughter of a village scholar who runs a local school, finds herself pregnant after being seduced by a teacher. While the girl remains unaware of the happenings within and around her, she is excommunicated by her father, who performs her funeral rites (Ghatashraddha), while she is still alive. A little boy through whose eyes the entire story is perceived goes back home, after the school is closed down following the incident.

This movie also shows a clear picture of caste division amongst Brahmins and untouchables in quite a few scenes.

The best part of the movie is, before the climax scene where the Shudra slave says to the main priest "He had saved his daughter (who got pregnant being a widow) even from the snakes, but could not save her from a Brahmin" The entire credit goes to Girish Kasaravalli for beautiful narration, and perfect direction. Meena(the girl) and Ajit(kid) acted brilliantly. Watch it for soul touching story and superb performance. Truly deserved an Oscar.

I am going with 9/10 for Girish Kasaravalli's Ghatashraddha.

How the holy ritual became a burden for Vedic geniuses and women at the time

      Ghatashraddha (1977) : Movie Review -

How the holy ritual became a burden for Vedic geniuses and women at the time. I don't know which era this film is set in, but Shraddha's ritual and the Vedic school have been quite familiar to me as well. It's a title that explores a father performing a Shraddha of his own daughter while she is still alive. I sensed that it would happen much before it actually occurred in the film. The excitement was only there to see how it unfolds. As expected, it revolves around a girl's romantic affair and the strict rules of Brahmins against it. Yet, we have a child at the center, who witnesses all these events unfold before his very eyes and then takes a stand. He stands with the girl, not knowing the consequences, because he is too little to make any such decision and isn't mature enough to understand the rules and traditions of the community. Still, watching such a small kid take a stand against age-old customs and support a woman was deeply impressive. I have a few complaints, though. The film is slow-paced - intentionally. It was the decade of experimental films, and many new filmmakers had this itch for foreign-style storytelling. This film reflects that foreign transition happening within Indian cinema. It wasn't the first to do so; so I can't even credit it for that. Yes, some scenes are masterfully directed, and the camerawork is wonderful. It's a film that tests your patience and carries a predictable plot, but the kind of storytelling and subtle momentum it holds is worth noticing. For its time, it was ahead of its era. Now, it feels dated. It's slow in both contexts. The performance by the child actor was phenomenal. Ajith was natural and even felt adorably cute at times. Meena Kuttappa, with that sad face, delivered a painful portrayal of a troubled girl. Narayana Bhat and others were commendable in their roles. Girish Kasaravalli's arrival in the cinema world came with some brilliant elements and certainly provides a different experience.

      Fabulous (MAMI MFF 2024 #8)

I love films about superstition so Ghatashraddha (The Ritual) is right up my alley. In it, a widow befriends a young boy in a vedic school and is currently clueless and uninterested in the daily lessons. The widow plays it safe as she's looked at as a woman who has no bearings in the society. But the boy sees her as a friend, not looking at her through the lens of society. And so begins a friendship that's limited but still bountiful. It's amazing to see how what was shown in a 1977 film is still so relevant. While I was disappointed that the titular part forms only a small part of the film, the proceedings have a good impact on anyone who pays attention.

(Watched the restored version at the 2024 MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.)
