- TriviaDespite having no prior experience and getting cast at the last moment, filming this movie was fine for Eléonore Klarwein, who was only 13. She nevertheless had issues with three scenes: "First, the one where I have my period, because I don't have it in reality and because it touches on the intimate. Then, the one where I take a bath with my sister who puts her toes in my mouth. Disgusting. On top of that, I'm topless in the bathtub and it's embarrassing. Finally, the one where my sister makes me fall from a sofa: there, I hurt myself" she recalled.
- GoofsThe film is set during the 1963-64 school year however a couple of elements are thus anachronistic: First, in early 1964 the history teacher mentions the Charonne subway massacre as having happened the previous year in February when it happened in February 1962 (although this could be seen as the character making the mistake of not taking the New Year into account). Second, an announcement that the price postal stamps is going up from 25 to 30 centimes can be heard on the radio, but this price hike did not occur until 1965.
Featured review
Insight-filled story of one year (1963-64) in the lives of two French sisters, living in Paris with their divorced mother and trying their best to cherish the joy while coping with the pain of growing up. Director Kurys, who dedicated this, her first film, to her own sister "who still hasn't returned my orange sweater," obviously knows whereof she speaks, since the character's ages correspond to her own growing up years. Nevertheless, the actual time period doesn't become clear until late in the movie, and the characters and incidents are certainly universal.
As the older sister, Odile Michel is lovely, and does a capable job with her role. The gem in this movie, though, is Eleanore Klarwein, who is captivating as the younger, more sensitive sibling who doesn't yet understand all that is going on around her, but struggles onward to meet each day nonetheless.
