“Reacher” is back.
Based on the book series by Lee Child, the Prime Video series once again finds our titular hero (Alan Ritchson) getting off the bus and getting into trouble. This time he is in Maine, recruited by local DEA agents looking to bust a bad guy – and get back an informant who has gone missing. And wouldn’t you know it, this seemingly random encounter ties back to a case from Reacher’s past?
If you want to know more about this season, we will happily delve deep into the colorful cast of Season 3 characters.

I learned about David Lynch’s passing in the most David Lynch possible way: doing jury duty. A fellow potential juror told me the news as we waited in the stark, Kafka-esque halls of L.A.’s Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice building. Instantly, the stone-faced bailiffs and unblinking prosecutors took on a subtle air of menace, as if I’d been sucked right into a cut scene from Twin Peaks or Lost Highway. When the Judge asked how I’d weigh eyewitness testimony, I couldn’t refrain from citing the power of framing in presenting evidence, or the inescapably unreliable nature of memory. The judge lectured me: “You do realize this is real-life, and not a television show?” I was quickly dismissed from jury duty.
Reading the odes to Lynch, his art, and the supremely unique notion of the “Lynchian” he left the world, many have lovingly called him a surrealist master.

January 2025 could mark a bleak month for very specific reasons, but in that month one can watch a nicely curated collection of David Bowie’s best performances. Nearly a decade since he passed, the iconic actor (who had some other trades) is celebrated with The Man Who Fell to Earth, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Linguini Incident, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, and Basquiat. (Note: watch The Missing Pieces under Fire Walk with Me‘s Criterion edition for about three times as much Phillip Jeffries.) It’s a retrospective-heavy month: Nicole Kidman, Cameron Crowe, Ethan Hawke, Paulin Soumanou Vieyra, Paolo Sorrentino, and Sean Baker are given spotlights; the first and last bring with them To Die For and Take Out‘s Criterion Editions, joining Still Walking, Hunger, and A Face in the Crowd.

This is our final round-up before the end of 2024, and it’s a good one. There are plenty of gift ideas lurking here––some choices to enjoy during time off, too. Note also that The Film Stage Holiday Gift Guide includes a list of my favorite cinema books from the last 12 months. One of those picks kicks off this column, and it is written by none other than the great Al Pacino.
Sonny Boy by Al Pacino (Penguin Press)
Al Pacino’s memoir, Sonny Boy, is easily one of the most eagerly awaited books of 2024. And for me, this look at the actor’s life and career more than lives up to the hype. Many highlights have already earned some social-media chatter––most notably young Al’s penis trauma (!), a near-death experience after a recent bout with Covid, and the reasons behind his decision to do Adam Sandler’s Jack and Jill.

Greek-Portuguese writer and director Paolo Marinou-Blanco (Empty Hands, Goodnight Irene) screened Dreaming of Lions, his absurdist black comedy film about assisted suicide and euthanasia, in the 10:30 p.m. slot at the fourth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival on Friday night. But the cinema in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia’s Culture Square, its “new home of film,” was packed, and the audience reacted with much applause after experiencing the tragicomic rollercoaster ride that the movie provides.

Nicolas Cage Thought He Was An Alien ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia )
Nicolas Cage’s flair for the eccentric might have otherworldly roots—or so he thought as a kid. The Face/Off actor revealed in an interview with Rampstyle magazine that he genuinely believed he was an alien growing up. And the twist? He was shocked to learn otherwise.
“I was certain I was from another planet,” Cage confessed, explaining how his father fueled the idea. “He felt like he had to introduce himself to me because I was such an alien.” That belief stayed with Cage until a doctor’s visit shattered his cosmic self-image. “I found out I had normal organs and a skeleton,” he shared. But that “alien” feeling didn’t just fade away—it shaped his journey. Struggling to connect with people, Cage found solace in David Bowie’s The Man Who Fell to Earth. That movie inspired...

Two years have gone by since we learned that Elizabeth Hurley (Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery) had signed on to star in Piper, a new horror film from director Anthony Waller. More than a year has passed since the film had its world premiere at FrightFest… but now it’s ready for a wider release. Digital Media, the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, has picked up Piper distribution rights and will be making it available to rent/own on all North American digital HD internet, cable, and satellite platforms, as well as on DVD, as of November 12th.
Back in 1995, director Waller made an impressive breakthrough with the thriller Mute Witness… then quickly squandered the good will he had earned with that movie by following it up with An American Werewolf in Paris. Waller has made a couple movies since the Paris debacle...

Much like every other Christopher Nolan movie, it took a hell lot of time for him to prepare for his 2006 sci-fi thriller The Prestige. Further, given his reputation in the industry, actors came flocking to the sets of Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman’s film, to have a role. But fate had a bizarre twist, given how the actor whom Nolan wanted, had already rejected the offer.

Christopher Nolan wanted renowned actor David Bowie to appear in The Prestige as the real-life inventor Nikola Tesla. However, despite the iconic offer, Bowie had initially rejected the role, which led Nolan to practically beg the late actor. Thankfully, lacking Plan B, and having his eyes fixed on Bowie, the filmmaker finally managed to convince him.

It's official: Reacher star Alan Ritchson is Hollywood's newest obsession. The actor has just booked his latest project, an action movie titled Runner, which will be directed by Expend4bles' Scott Waugh.
According to Deadline, Ritchson will portray "a high-end courier who has three hours to transport an organ to save a seven-year-old girl in need of an immediate transplant. The seemingly simple mission turns deadly when the leader of a notorious crime syndicate becomes hell-bent on claiming the organ." Production on Runner will begin in March 2025 in London. The movie's screenplay, written by Miles Hubley and Tommy White, appeared on the 2023 Black List.

While fast-paced action can be incredibly enjoyable, theres a lot to be said for a slow-burn sci-fi movie that takes its time to reveal its true nature. By allowing the space for atmosphere and complexity to grow and breathe, sci-fi stories can become all the more thought-provoking and philosophically rich when they dont underestimate the audience and allow for events to occur naturally without the need for endless explosions, chases, or blockbuster movie spectacles. A slower-paced sci-fi film allows for tension to build and the characters' motivations to reveal themselves.
Some of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made ran at a slower pace and rewarded viewers' patience with meaningful revelations. By focusing on characters over pure, mindless entertainment or giving room for striking visuals and a sense of discovery within the movies world, sci-fi stories can go from being merely good to truly great. Reacher is coming back. The fan-favorite Prime Video series has just been renewed for a fourth season.
Additionally, Prime Video confirmed that Season 3 of the Alan Ritchson-led series, which is based on the Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child, will debut in 2025. The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power Showrunners Debunk Popular "Dark Wizard" Theory - Spoilers
The second season of Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power came to an end this week, and the finale seemed to leave little doubt as to the identity of the "Dark Wizard" played by Game of Thrones alum Ciarán Hinds.
However, all may not be as it seems when it comes to this mysterious and very powerful character.
We know that this blatantly evil sorcerer is an "Istar," and it was generally assumed that he must be Sarauman. Granted, it would be a pretty major change to the lore if this character "broke bad" prior to the events of Tolkien's trilogy, but so would the introduction of another Istari who was never mentioned in the saga at all.
This led to speculation that Hinds might be playing either Alatar or Pallando, the "Blue Wizards" who are never really discussed in any great detail in The Lord of the Rings...

Prime Video has already released a brief promo for this Thursday's season 2 finale of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, but an extended version has now been shared online which features quite a bit of new footage.
Spoilers for the previous episode follow.
It's not the best quality, but the video shows more of the fierce battle between Galadriel and Sauron that was teased in the first trailer. The Dark Lord is still in his Annatar form here - but as we've already seen, this makes him no less powerful.
We also have another shot of the Balrog, who was first awakened from his long slumber in the season 2 finale. The fiery demon will be unleashed from his cavern deep beneath Moria when King Durin refuses to listen to his son and digs far too deeply into the mountain.
Finally, we get a glimpse of the Dark Wizard (surely Saruman?...

The penultimate season 2 episode of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is now streaming, and despite featuring a massive battle and a couple of deaths (though we'd say Arondir is still kicking), it was a kiss between two characters that emerged as the biggest talking point.
Spoilers from this point on.
Though they never had a relationship in J.R.R. Tolkien's source material, Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Elrond (Robert Aramayo) locked lips in "Doomed To Die." Were these Elven comrades simply unable to contain their feelings any longer, giving in to their passionate desire for one another?
Not exactly.
The kiss was actually a strategic play on Elrond's part, as he was able to slip the captured Galadriel a cloak pin that she would later use to free herself from Adar. While some fans enjoyed this moment and are even "shipping" the characters, a lot of others...

The intense penultimate episode of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is now streaming, and "Doomed To Die" focused on the devastating Battle of Eregion, as Adar - with Galadriel as his prisoner - and his forces launched an attack on the Elven kingdom while Elrond and King Gil-glad mounted a desperate defence.
Spoilers follow.
With Durin unable to keep his word to Elrond by sending an army of Dwarves to bolster the Elven ranks, Adar ultimately emerges victorious, stabbing Arondir (possibly fatally) and seizing Galadriel's ring, Nenya, from Elrond before flinging the Elf to the ground.
Meanwhile, Celebrimbor realizes that Annatar has been Sauron all along, and he's been tricked into forging the nine rings for mortal men while his city crumbles around him.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2, episode 4 is now streaming on Prime Video, and among the Ents (and Ent-wives), eerie Barrow-Wights and the debut of Tom Bombadil, the most significant talking point might be our biggest hint yet as to the true identity of The Stranger (Daniel Weyman).
Spoilers follow.
When Nori (Markella Kavanaugh) and Poppy (Megan Richards) get separated from their "Istar" friend after being whisked away by a sandstorm he caused (he still doesn't quite have a grasp of his powers), they encounter a group of larger Halflings who call themselves Stoors (Smeagol/Gollum is believed to have been a Stoorish Hobbit). The first three episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 are now streaming on Prime Video, and ep 2, "Where the Stars are Strange," introduces a mysterious character who might just turn out to be the secondary antagonist of J.R.R. Tolkien's trilogy.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power Unveils Sauron's True Form In Season 2 Premiere - Spoilers
The first three episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power are now streaming on Prime Video, and the premiere wastes little time in taking us back to the Dawn of the Second Age to reveal the shocking origin of Sauron.
Major spoilers follow.
The first episode begins by introducing Sauron in his original form as a Maia spirit made flesh (played Slow Horses actor Jack Lowden) shortly after the defeat of his master, Morgoth.
Sauron gives a speech to a group of Orcs, attempting to convince them to embrace him as their new Dark Lord. However, Adar - now played by Sam Hazeldine - doesn't believe his would-be ruler has his "children's" best interests at heart, and instigates an uprising which results in Sauron's "death."
Though Sauron's spirit appears to leave his body, his blood flows into the earth, and the shape-shifting villain is eventually able to take the form of.

Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” is a meta ghost story, according to legendary author Rachel Kushner.
The California writer, whose latest novel “Creation Lake” will be released in September, appeared on the Criterion Channel’s “Adventures in Moviegoing” series to share her favorite San Francisco-set films. Of course, “Vertigo” was on the top of her list, both due to her personal connections to the locations captured by Hitchcock onscreen and just how much the 1958 film still haunts the city itself 70 years later.
The beloved thriller stars James Stewart as a former police detective who becomes obsessed with a woman (Kim Novak) he is hired to investigate. (Read our list of Alfred Hitchcock’s best movies here.)

If you've read Tolkien's seminal trilogy, you should be very familiar with this mysterious character, who was introduced along with his wife Goldberry when Frodo and his company made their way through the Old Forest in The Fellowship of the Ring. Bombadil was clearly a very powerful individual, who was actually able to...

Turkish director Zeki Demirkubuz drama Life scooped the top Golden Bee award for Best Feature Film at Malta’s second Mediterrane Film Festival over the weekend.
This year’s selection was overseen by Italian film festival veteran Teresa Cavina, who pulled together a line-up of 45 works with Mediterranean basin connections, 15 of which were in the main Competition.
In the backdrop to the festival, leading English-language newspaper The Times of Malta continued to probe whether the event’s budget of $4.1M budget (€3.9) was good use of taxpayers’ money on the island nation, with a population of roughly 500,000 people.
Last year, the newspaper heavily criticized the event for allegedly splashing cash on business class fights and luxury hotels for actors, directors and journalists as well as a lavish black-tie closing event, fronted by UK star David Walliams.

We recently learned that Tom Bombadil (Rory Kinnear) will be introduced during season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and we now have confirmation that some far more nefarious creatures from the same never-adapted section of The Fellowship of the Ring will also make an appearance when the Prime Video series returns to our screens.
Empire Magazine has shared its Rings of Power season 2 covers along with a new still, and they feature Morfydd Clark as Galadriel, Charlie Vickers as Sauron (in both his previous Halbrand and new Annatar forms), and a first look at the terrifying Barrow-wights.
In J.R.R. Tolkien's book, the four hobbits encounter these undead horrors and almost come to a nasty end until Bombadil makes the save. We're not sure how they'll factor into the show, but the image suggests that it'll be Galadriel who runs into some eerie glowing fog on the Barrow Downs.

"Well, first of all, I like Alan a lot. He's a standup guy. He's fun to work with. He's very serious about the filmmaking aspect. I mean, it's a television show we're making, but it's streaming all around the world. And I know that he's put in his time; he's 41," the actor shared. "He's a very nice guy; very humble guy. Prime Video recently released the first trailer for the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, giving us a glimpse of several new and returning characters who will be back to continue the battle to project Middle-earth from Sauron and his forces this August.

Alan Ritchson's Jack Reacher is about to come face-to-face with someone (surprisingly) larger than him. Dutch bodybuilder Olivier Richters, nicknamed "The Dutch Giant," has joined the cast of Reacher Season 3 in the role of Paulie.
After Reacher Season 3 cast member Anthony Michael Hall prematurely announced Richters' casting to CinemaBlend earlier this week, Prime Video officially confirmed the latest addition with a post on the official Reacher Instagram account that shows Richters crossing out and replacing Reacher's name on a trailer door with "Paulie." The caption reads, "Reacher isn't going to like that. [The Dutch Giant] has arrived to Season 3." Richters is best known for playing Ursa in Black Widow (2021) and Hauke in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023). He will next appear as Krom in Borderlands, which hits theaters this August.

After wrapping a publicity tour for his latest movie, Guy Ritchie's The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, Alan Ritchson is back in Canada to finish production on Reacher Season 3. New photos have been shared online following his return to set, which tease a possible Season 3 fight scene.
Four set photos from Reacher Season 3 were recently posted on the social media platform X, showing Ritchson filming in Millbrook, Ontario. While not much can be pulled from the images, besides the same shiny black car appearing in each one, Ritchson does appear to be holding the shaft of an unknown yard tool, which was seemingly taken from the storefront in the final photo. While purely speculative, it's possible that a fight scene is being filmed for Reacher Season 3 that finds Ritchson's title character looking for and grabbing a makeshift weapon.

Nearly a year has gone by since we learned that Elizabeth Hurley (Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery) had signed on to star in Piper, a new horror film from director Anthony Waller. Now The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that the movie is set to have its world premiere at FrightFest this Sunday, August 27th – and ahead of the premiere, a trailer for Piper has arrived online! You can check it out in the embed above.
Back in 1995, director Waller made an impressive breakthrough with the thriller Mute Witness… then quickly squandered the good will he had earned with that movie by following it up with An American Werewolf in Paris. Waller has made a couple movies since the Paris debacle – the 2000 Bill Pullman thriller The Guilty, the 2009 sci-fi horror film 9 Miles Down – and here’s hoping that Piper will earn him some positive attention again.

Hersha Parady, who won the hearts of Little House on the Prairie viewers with her 1977-1980 portrayal of Walnut Grove schoolteacher and Ingalls Family friend Alice Garvey, died yesterday in Norfolk, Virginia, following surgery last month for the brain cancer meningioma. She was 78.
Her death was announced by her son Jonathan Peverall. Parady died in Peverall’s hometown of Norfolk.
In a Facebook post last night, co-star and friend Alison Arngrim, who played the troublemaking Nellie Oleson on Little House, wrote, “Our wild, untameable, talented Hersha has left us. Rest in power.”
Although Parady made her TV debut in 1971 on the series Bearcats! and appeared that decade on Mannix, The Waltons and CBS Afternoon Playhouse, she debuted in her signature role of the Little House teacher in 1977, beginning a three-season run that would end with one of the series’ most shocking and well-remembered installments: The February 4, 1980, episode titled “May We Make Them Proud: Part I.

Big-name Hollywood actors like Emma Stone, Don Cheadle, and Harrison Ford have appeared in excellent TV shows, but they often go unnoticed in the crowded streaming market. Shows featuring these actors, such as Miracle Workers with Daniel Radcliffe and On Becoming A God In Central Florida with Kirsten Dunst, are highly underrated and worth seeking out for their stellar performances. Despite the star power of actors like Julia Roberts in Gaslit and Chiwetel Ejiofor in The Man Who Fell to Earth, these shows have remained under the radar but offer gripping stories and excellent performances in their respective genres.
An increase in prestige TV means that more big-name Hollywood actors are taking television roles, but it also means it's easier for great shows to slip through the cracks. Movie stars including Emma Stone, Don Cheadle, and Harrison Ford have all featured in excellent television series in recent years, but in such a crowded market,...
