Paramore staged their final scheduled performance of 2024 at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas on Friday night, which they styled as a tribute to Blondie’s own 1979 appearance on The Midnight Special.
Singer Hayley Williams channeled Blondie’s Debbie Harry, donning a blue dress and headband, while the stage setup embraced a distinctly retro vibe. True to their recent live performances, Paramore also slipped in a brief cover of Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” during their own song “Hard Times.”
On her Instagram page, Williams shared clips of Blondie’s performance on The Midnight Special and thanked Paramore’s “entire crew for an amazing year of shows and for helping us pull off this tribute.”
Elsewhere during the set, Williams gave an impassioned plea to vote while denouncing Donald Trump’s agenda. “Project 2025 is Donald Trump’s playbook for controlling and punishing women, poor people, people of color & the LGBTQ+ community,...

The slasher first established itself as the dominant art form of 1980s horror by capitalizing on the calendar. Arguably beginning with Black Christmas (1974) and Halloween (1978), the formula began to solidify by setting brutal killing sprees on the dates of beloved holidays. With the subsequent success of Friday the 13th (1980), directors clamored to claim their own occasion and create a defining slasher film with a series of themed kills highlighting seasonal iconography. It was a win-win for both filmmakers and audiences–an annually rewatchable horror film allowing genre fans to eschew saccharine traditions and celebrate in style.
Lee Thompson’s Happy Birthday to Me (1981) features a slightly more nebulous occasion–after all, every day of the year is someone’s birthday. Rejecting the concept’s seasonality, Thompson and screenwriters John C.W. Saxton, Peter Jobin, and Timothy Bond patterned the mysterious killer’s actions around the idea of a grisly birthday party.

Spoiler Alert: Details follow for Season 11, Episode 13 of “The Masked Singer,” “Finale: One Mask Takes It All,” which aired May 22 on Fox.
“The Masked Singer” winner Vanessa Hudgens admits she didn’t necessarily play the hiding game: At least among her friends and fans, they figured out it was her under the Goldfish costume rather quickly.
“Rita [Ora] guessed it was me straight from the jump,” Hudgens said. “But she’s also my friend. And we saw each other a few days before the first episode!”
Hudgens beat out Scott Porter, who had performed this season as Gumball, to win the “Masked Singer” trophy. Coincidentally, both Hudgens and Porter previously starred together in 2009’s “Bandslam.”
Despite their history, Hudgens said the production kept her completely in the dark as to who her competitors were. “I was so invested every step of the way,” she said. “I was trying really hard to...

With 2010’s Pink Friday, Nicki Minaj didn’t adapt to the industry, but rather she forced it to adapt to her. A mix of femininity and bravado, the rapper’s first studio album quite literally remade mainstream hip-hop in her image. Thirteen years later, the album’s sequel, Pink Friday 2, feels like the product of an identity crisis.
Throughout the album, which clocks in at one hour and 10 minutes, Minaj lets herself be overshadowed by the sounds and styles of her featured guests. “Let Me Calm Down,” featuring J. Cole, feels completely derivative of the North Carolina rapper’s 2014 Forest Hills Drive, while Drake gets more airtime on “Needle” than Minaj herself. Even when Pink Friday 2 homes in on some catchy or indelible moments, like on the solo “Fallin 4 U,” things tend to slip into a sugary pop-r&b groove reminiscent of newer artists like Doja Cat and Sza.

Nicki Minaj has dropped her long-awaited new album, Pink Friday 2. Something of a follow-up to 2010’s Pink Friday, the album has a whopping 22 tracks and offers fans plenty to dig into. From big-budget samples like Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” to features including Drake, Lil Wayne, and Future, the album is sure to satiate Minaj’s throngs of loyal fans — known as the Barbz — for some time, and makes for a late addition as one of the year’s biggest rap albums.

Dolly Parton isn’t done rocking yet. After sharing her new album Rockstar last week, our November cover star has returned with two new bonus tracks: Her rendition of the Eddie Money’s “Two Tickets to Paradise,” plus a new version of her classic “Jolene” featuring Måneskin.

Dolly Parton is arguably the most beloved living American. How many people are alive today because Dolly told them to get the Covid vaccine back in early 2021? Of course, she’s a paragon of country music, but her reach goes far beyond Nashville, from the disco pop of her working-woman masterpiece “9 to 5” to the soft-rock bliss of her classic Kenny Rogers duet “Islands in the Stream.” And the crossover love has been reflected back; one of the most popular cover songs of all time is Whitney Houston’s...

At 81 years of age, over 60 films and as many years into his career, Werner Herzog is a man who has seen some stuff. Here is a man who has dragged a ship over a mountain for Fitzcarraldo, climbed a volcano set to erupt, had an entire cast hypnotised on Heart Of Glass, eaten his own shoe after losing a bet, and been shot at by an air-rifle wielding sniper mid-interview – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Speaking of which, he’s also made a movie in actual Antarctica, where the sun rises and sets only once a year. But if, like us, you’d imagine all these incredible experiences must make for some even wilder dreams, then you’d be very wrong. Werner Herzog hardly even dreams at all.

Paramore’s North American tour landed in Houston Wednesday, and with the band being on Beyoncé’s home turf, Hayley Williams served up a cover of the singer’s “I Miss You.”
The abbreviated, a cappella version of the Frank Ocean-cowritten 4 single at the Toyota Center segued neatly into a rendition of Williams’ solo song “Crystal Clear.”
Since launching their North American tour, Paramore have sprinkled truncated cover songs into their set, most notably at the 2023 Bonnaroo festival, where the band melded both Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody...

Don’t expect to see an AI hologram of Dolly Parton performing live once she’s gone. In a recent press conference, the country legend (via The Independent) said she has no desire to leave her “soul” behind.
“I think I’ve left a great body of work behind,” Parton said. “I have to decide how much of that high-tech stuff I want to be involved [with] because I don’t want to leave my soul here on this earth.”
She continued, “I think with some of this stuff I’ll be grounded here for ever… I’ll be around, we’ll find ways to keep me here.” According to The Independent, Parton also quipped that “everything” about her — including “any intelligence” — was artificial anyway.

Canadian Inuk singer-songwriter Elisapie has released a “bold, poignant and powerful” Inuktitut cover of Metallica’s “Unforgiven” in honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21st.
Her version, titled “Isumagijunnaitaungituq (The Unforgiven)”, is the third single off Inuktitut, Elisapie’s upcoming fourth solo album, out via Bonsound on September 15th. The emotionally charged adaptation pays tribute to the Inuit men of her community, and is also a nod to the time she interviewed Kirk Hammett, 60, from Metallica in the early ’90s.
“When I was 14 years old, I applied for a job at Tni, the first Inuit TV-radio broadcaster, and I was thrilled when I was chosen for the position! Everyone at the station dreamed big, and they put in a request for an interview with Metallica. The band was so loved in Salluit that we had to give it a shot,” said the Salluit, Quebec native, 46.

As she tells it in her 2019 memoir Face It, Debbie Harry has survived some horrifying non-consensual encounters with men — but one moment she recalls fondly is the time David Bowie flashed her in 1977. She doubled-down in defense of the late glam rock icon in a recent interview with The Times, clarifying that she was a “consenting adult” when Bowie whipped his penis out in front of her in the midst of a Blondie tour.
In Face It, Harry writes: “One time David and Iggy [Pop] were looking for some blow. Their connection in New York had suddenly died and they were out. A friend had given me a gram, but I had barely touched it. I didn’t care for coke too much — it made me jittery and wired and it affected my throat. So I went upstairs with my vast quantity of cocaine and they just sucked it right up in one swoop.

Elisapie, a Canadian Inuk singer-songwriter, plumbs new sadness in one of Metallica’s biggest, most emotional hits on her recording, “Isumagijunnaitaungituq (The Unforgiven).” Where the metal band drew inspiration from Ennio Morricone soundtracks, Spaghetti Westerns, and family trauma for the Black Album hit, Elisapie keeps things quiet, as she sings the lyrics in the indigenous Inuktitut. The instrumentation includes banjo, traditional drums, bass saxophone, throat singing, and saw, in addition to guitar and synth.

Dolly Parton has continued rolling out her Rockstar era with a pair of new tracks: an original song titled “Bygones” featuring Judas Priest’s Rob Halford and a cover of Heart’s “Magic Man” with Ann Wilson herself.
“Bygones” also features Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx and John 5, who recently joined the Crüe as their new guitarist. On the track, Parton and Halford trade dueling vocals, singing, “I’m sorry, so sorry/ How long must you punish me?/ Why can’t we just move on?/ Let bygones be bygones.”
In a statement, Parton called “Bygones” one of her “very favorites” on the album, adding, “The song fits with so many couples and coupling my voice with Rob, one of my all-time favorites, made it even more special.”
On her cover of “Magic Man,” Parton mostly sticks to the original, singing the first verse before handing the mic over to Wilson for the second verse.

Dolly Parton famously (twice!) declined an invitation to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Donald Trump. It turns out she also rejected a similar overture from President Joe Biden.
The Today Show’s Jacob Soboroff recently interviewed Parton recently to promote her upcoming album Rockstar. While the singer didn’t discuss her decision not to accept the Presidential Medal of Freedom on camera, Soborof told The Today Show colleagues that it stemmed from her desire not to be associated with any particular party. “I just don’t want even the appearance of being partisan in any way,” he recalled her saying.
Parton did discuss her distrust of the modern political system in general, however. After Soborof read an uncharacteristically biting lyric from Parton’s new song “World on Fire” (“Greedy politicians present and past/ They wouldn’t know the truth if it bit ’em in the ass”), he asked...

Dolly Parton is entering her Rockstar era with the upcoming release of her rock ‘n’ roll album. She’s sharing the first sample of the LP today with its lead single, the scorching and topically-relevant “World on Fire.” Update: Parton debuted the song live during the ACM Awards on Thursday night. Watch the performance below.
Parton’s Rockstar tracklist boasts an absolutely insane list of guest stars to assist her with some epic covers. While “World on Fire” is one of the album’s few original tracks, it definitely takes cues from her collaborators here. The introduction kicks off with some dramatic chorus vocals and a harpsichord-sounding riff that calls to mind Bon Jovi, before a beat comes in that’s lifted directly from Queen’s “We Will Rock You.”

Blondie rang in Coachella 2023 with a set of greatest hits, and to up the ante, they brought out legendary guitarist Nile Rodgers to round out a couple songs.
Rather than saving the best for last, the new wave legends came in swinging by opening with “One Way or Another” and going straight into “Hanging on the Telephone,” “Call Me,” “Maria,” and “The Tide Is High.” Rodgers then hit the stage for “Rapture,” Blondie’s 1980 song infamous for Debbie Harry’s “rap” bridge.
After that, Rodgers stayed on to perform “Backfired,” Harry’s debut solo song. The 1981 track appears on the singer’s first solo album, KooKoo, which Rodgers and his Chic bandmate, bassist Bernard Edwards, produced. From there, Blondie threw in “Long Time,” a cut from 2017’s Pollinator, before closing their set with “Heart of Glass” and “Dreaming.” Check out videos from their Coachella show below.

What a moment to be a Miley Cyrus fan. “Flowers” is more than just a surprise comeback hit — it’s the triumph of Mileyism. It’s been 10 years since her last Number One hit, “Wrecking Ball,” at the height of her tabloid-scandal, electro-sleaze Bangerz era. But now she has finally transformed into the kind of old-school grown-up legend she’s always wanted to be. “Flowers,” the lead single from Friday’s Saturn-return post-divorce album Endless Summer Vacation, marks the culmination of her unlikely journey from Hannah Montana to world-wise adulthood.

This post contains spoilers for "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania."
One can say many things of "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," but it is, without a question, a pretty weird movie -- particularly by Marvel Cinematic Universe standards. Director Peyton Reed's trip through the Quantum Realm to bring Scott Lang face-to-face with Kang the Conqueror included many, many strange moments, with the inclusion of M.O.D.O.K. only ranking as a relatively small part of it. Much of that weirdness is thanks to writer Jeff Loveness, who incorporated some of his "Rick and Morty" sensibilities in his screenplay. But it turns out, he left some of his weirdest ideas on the table.

In the late Seventies, Blondie were the most widely mocked band of Cbgb’s first punk wave — too pop, not rigorous enough. But after they hit Number One in early 1979 with “Heart of Glass,” their pasticheurs-and-proud stance not only made their string of hits a rare shot of excitement on early-Eighties radio, they foretold the way hits of the future would be stitched together from different genres. Blondie look increasingly visionary in the rearview.
