Average drama based based on a novel by Nobel laureate Jacinto Benavente

Pepa Doncel is a Spanish romantic drama film released in 1969, written by Antonio Gala and Luis Lucia and directed by the latter. Dealing with Felisa (Aurora Bautista) is a woman who worked as a prostitute at the Tropicana Cabaret under the alias of Pepa Doncel. After getting pregnant by Gonzalo, her pimp, Pepa decided to change her life by marrying Felipe Cifuentes, a businessman much older than her. He is an important man and much older than her, from whom she will obtain a great fortune when she is widowed. Years later, he sends his daughter Genoveva to study in London. F when she was widowed, in addition to his position on the board of directors of a major real estate company. Said company is beginning the process of building an urbanization, on land occupied by shanty townspeople. Pepa wants part of the houses to go to the shantytowns, but this charitable attitude of hers causes the rest of the real estate shareholders to oppose her, reminding her of her shady past. Meanwhile, she tries to arrange a marriage of convenience for her daughter Genoveva (Maribel Martin) who nowadays goes back from London to ensure her future, but she wants to marry a young student (Junior) and musician she has met. Finally a suitor, a well-placed man in society, ends up marrying Felisa herself.

A so-so drama with varied elements such emotion , jealousy , family conflicts , romance , humor and soap-opera . Based on the homonymous play by JacintoBenavente, the novelist Antonio Gala and the filmmaker Luis Lucia wrote this script in a failed attempt to update the past play. The weight of the film falls on Aurora Bautista at the height of her career. She plays a respectable widow, who rose to the top from the most humble and rugged origins, marrying a wealthy man from whom she inherited a large fortune , while she finds her former lover -nicely played by Juan Luis Galiardo- suddenly struck up a close relationship with her daughter. The film also offers the opportunity to see perform the singer Antonio Morales who sings some songs , better known as Junior , and husband of the also singer and actress Rocío Durcal. Along with these famous actors appearing here and there notorious secondaries , such as : Fernando Guillén as her priest friend , Mercedes Vecino ,Carlos Ballesteros , Ángel Menéndez , Antonio Casas , María Asquerino and Gracita Morales showing off his innate and unmistakable comedic skills .

Produced in medium budget by Luis Sanz and Cesáreo González Producciones Cinematográficas, a great production company who financed several successes . The motion picture was regularly directed by Luis Lucia . He was an advocate at law for the powerful production company Cifesa . His film debut was ¨13-13¨ and subsequently ¨Hombre De Negocios¨, two average ¨comedies . Later on , he directed two dated historical dramas : ¨Princesa De Ursinos¨ and ¨Jeromin¨ . Lucia directed fantasy comedies as ¨La Lupa¨, ¨Un Angel Tuvo La Culpa¨ and this one . And he made various Folkloric films for Juanita Reina : ¨Lóla La Piconera¨ , ¨Gloria Mairena¨ , Carmen Sevilla : ¨Hermana De San Sulpicio¨ , Lola Flores : ¨Morena Clara¨ , Antonio Molina : ¨Esta Voz Es Una Mina¨ , among others . And he directed various vehicles for child and teen Prodigy , such as Marisol , Rocio Durcal and Ana Belén . Rating : 4.5/10 . A mediocre film with exxagerated interpretations and only for Spanish cinema fans .
