Although there have been plenty of iconic summer vacation movies over the years, only a couple can hold the "best of all time" mantle. Summer is well-known in the movie business for being a great time to drop big tentpole films and crowd-pleasing blockbusters. Jaden Smith has released “Bye,” a breezy summer track that also happens to be the first single of his upcoming collaborative album, CTV3 Day Trippers Edition.

Written by Smith and produced by Lido (Ariana Grande, Halsey, Chance the Rapper), “Bye” describes going for a drive to the beach in the hopes of repairing a relationship. “I’m feeling Santa Barbara strong/She got her face in a phone, she got places to go,” Smith sings. “Well, at least let me take you home/There’s some tequila in here, I’m not tasting it though.

The film also focuses on the usual adventure life challenges including getting older, injuries, family, and the risks of continuing to participate in considerably dangerous sports. Shot in New Providence, Bahamas, and directed by Smith himself, the video features scenes of Smith staring at the pink sunset, closing his eyes on a float, swimming through the current, and lying facedown in the sand. He floats down to the ocean floor fully clothed, clutching a Polaroid. “Thought I might write a song,” he sings. “Hoped you might sing along.”

Steven Manios Sr., a camera optics pioneer and former owner and president of Century Precision Optics, died on January 3 from complications of Covid-19. He was 82.

Manios was born in Athens, Greece on September 4, 1938 and lived through Greece’s Great Famine of 1941. He made the move to Los Angeles at 19 years old and became an apprentice to Chris Condon, a family friend and owner of Century Photo Supplies. He paid his dues during his early Hollywood career and developed top-notch skills as an optical craftsman. He would go on to buy the company from Condon in 197.

His career in Hollywood spanned five decades and during his life as an optics trailblazer, Manios developed numerous optical devices, including wide-angle and telephoto lenses, that became standard equipment in film and television production. He was awarded several U.S. patents and earned the patronage and friendship of many of the industry’s top cinematographers.

Jaden Smith has released the official music video for “I’m Ready,” his new single featured on the soundtrack to the PlayStation video game Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Written by Smith, Omarr Rambert, and Josiah Bell, “I’m Ready” acts as Miles Morales’ theme song in the game while he fights villains under the Spider-Man alias. The video cuts together game footage with Jaden Smith on a rooftop, overlooking Spider-Man’s home city of New York at sunset. The music video was directed by Gavin Filipiak and produced by Brandon Akiaten and Sean Thomas.

Delayed due to Covid-19 concerns, the Newport Beach Film Festival is still intent on bringing attention to innovation in the film industry. The virtual event, scheduled to take place Oct. 1-11, follows a drive-in opening night film screening that took place Aug. 13. “A Life of Endless Summers: The Bruce Brown Story” unspooled in a parking lot in Fashion Island mall between Bloomingdales and Nordstrom.

Jon Berg will also produce with Silverman and the twins, who became famous in Mezrich’s bestseller “The Accidental Billionaires,” the basis for the movie “The Social Network.” The brothers alleged that Mark Zuckerberg briefly worked for them and stole part of the code from them to launch Facebook, which reached a settlement of $65 million with the brothers.

“The Endless Summer” movie filmmaker Bruce Brown, through his Bruce Brown Films, LLC, has sued Nike and Footlocker for trademark infringement after the sports company allegedly used the title in a promotional campaign.

In the lawsuit, obtained by TheWrap, Brown says he is the legal and beneficial owner of multiple federal trademark registrations for the brand name “Endless Summer” and “The Endless Summer,” as well as the Endless Summer design mark. As such, the brand has been authorized for various goods and services for 35 years where Brown has licensed the rights for the trademark title and film poster. “Consumers associate the Film Poster with the Endless Summer Brand and film,” the lawsuit read.

The lawsuit alleges that Champs and Nike infringed on the trademarked name when they launched a marketing campaign in May of 2019 using the words “Endless Summer” and “distinctive and recognizable elements of the Film Poster.” Footlocker sold...

Snapchat and Screen Australia have partnered to launch a new initiative aimed at developing and producing premium Australian, vertical mobile series, jointly offering $15,000 in development funding as well as an all-expenses-paid trip to Snapchat HQ in Los Angeles to workshop concepts.

The brief is for projects suitable for short-form, fictional series that are creatively outstanding, and able to be told in 10 episodes of up to 5 minutes per episode. Concepts can be of any scripted narrative genre, and up to two teams will be selected.

Applicant teams must consist of at least two people with the roles of writer, producer and director covered. All team members must be available to attend the workshop which will be held the week of May 18, 2020 in Los Angeles. Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” has tied “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” with 10 Oscar nominations, the most ever for a non-English language contender. This comes on the heels of wins from the New York and Los Angeles critics’ groups, along with multiple guild nominations, and a best director Golden Globes award. What once looked like a streaming-service outlier is now a serious, if not leading, contender to win the industry’s top award.

In the nine-decade history of the Academy, no foreign-language film has ever won. Nine foreign-language films received five or more nominations among all categories (some — but not all — included Foreign Language Film). For those of you not familiar with documentary filmmaker Bruce Brown, he is the man who brought us the legendary surfing film The Endless Summer (1966) and it's sequel The Endless Summer 2 (1994). He made a few other documentaries as well, like On Any Sunday (1971), which was nominated for an Oscar. I loved those movies and I'm sad to report that Bruce Brown passed away this past Sunday. He was 80-years-old. These are his best known films and just a small part of the legacy that he left behind. According to his official website he died of natural causes.
