      Hard to Enjoy When You Don't Care About the Characters

      Blue Sextet (1971)

      * 1/2 (out of 4)

      Jeffrey Amber (John Damon) jumps to his death and the police have no problem thinking that it was suicide. His friends gather shortly after his death and discuss their last moments with him and we slowly begin to wonder whether it was suicide or murder.

      BLUE SEXTET is a film that barely got released back in the day. It comes from director David E. Durston who will be best remembered for his cult film I DRINK YOUR BLOOD. This one here was shot before that film and features a lot of the same cast members but sadly it doesn't have the same appeal as that movie. There are all sorts of problems with this movie but the biggest is the fact that you simply don't care what happened to Jeffrey.

      The entire mystery is played out via RASHOMON style and it simply doesn't work because you don't care about the lead character, his friends or any of the adventures that they had together. There are a lot of sex scenes scattered throughout and a little bit of nudity but none of this is all that interesting either. It certainly doesn't help that the performances are mostly bland and they certainly can't help pull off this "dramatic" tale.

      Towards the end of the movie we get some rather bizarre Satanic scenes that are certainly the highlight of the picture. As much as I didn't care for the film I will say that director Durston did a better job than a lot of these type of pictures from this era. The film is at least well-made but that still doesn't make up for the lack of drama.
