Tibetana

This film has no VHS or DVD listing. I did some research and found out that is was released on video in 1985. My local library has some esoteric obscure films, so I decided to search this one out. The film was released in 1969, and MGM is listed as the releasing company, although there are no references to this film in the book "The MGM Story". Pernell Roberts plays an ex mountain climber that is now hiding out in Tibet. Roberts attempts to help a scientist get across the border, before Chinese troops invade. The print I viewed was extremely scratched, obviously not well preserved at all. I can not believe that Pernell Roberts left Bonanza to do low budget films of this nature. A complete and total shame. * star.

The Kashmiri Run, also known as Tibetana is an adventure comedy , happening after the defeat of major Kuomintang forces in the Chinese Civil War, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) turned its attention to the Republic of China territories in the hinterland. Eastern Kham was the Chinese-held part of Sikang and the gateway to Tibetan areas. The 18th Army of the PLA formed the leading detachment advancing toward Tibet with the 52nd Division as its main force, and arrived at Ya'an on 12 February 1950. In March, the People's Liberation Army arrived in Kangding. By mid-April, the 18th Army had at least 30,000 passing through Kangding, and 10,000 Tibetans helped to build the road from Kangding to Garze, which was completed in August. The 18th Army of the PLA assembled at Garze on 30 July, headquartered at Xinlong, and entered Litang from the east. The Qinghai Cavalry Detachment entered Gyegu on 22 July, forming a north-south pincer on Chamdo. After months of failed negotiations, attempts by Lhasa to secure foreign support and assistance, and the troop buildups by the PRC and Tibet, the PLA crossed the Jinsha River on 6 or 7 October 1950 into Lhasa-controlled Chamdo, crossing the de facto border at 5 places. Two PLA units quickly captured the border town of Chamdo .

It deals with Gregory (Pernell Roberts) consorts with a corrupt local mayor , as he's aware that a British geologist resides in the mayor's village. Gregory convinces the mayor that the geologist's patrons will seek vengeance if anything befalls . Thus Gregory contrives to escort James Fleming and wife (Alexandra Bastedo) to safety . She refuses to believe there's impending trouble with the Chinese , so Gregory gets her drunk and slips her out of village, starting an odyssey across bandit territory. Over the course of various misadventures and misfortunes , Gregory reveals the heroism beneath his gruff aspect . And just as predictably, he falls in love with the attractive woman he's agreed to rescue . Accompanying them are Tibetan helpers (Julian Mateos) , including Gregory's common-law wife (Gloria Camara) , who also has several Tibetan husbands.

A tongue-in-cheek , periodically idiotic and sarcastic comedy with turgid storyline about an American stranded in Tibet , as the adventurer leads another man and a woman on an escape route out of Chinese communist-occupied Tibet . He is called Gregory Nelson making a deal to escort a foreigner couple to the Indian border following China's invasion of Tibet . It displays a murky script and questionable historical happenings , including lousy interpretations playing stupid roles from an ordinary main and supporting cast . The picture provides Pernell Roberts with a mediocre showcase as an international rogue somewhat in an adventurous mold . It was part of Pernell Roberts' unsuccessful run at movie stardom by showing a silly bravery and masculinity style , following his departure from the enormousTV hit Bonanza in 1965. In fact , this ¨Tibetana¨ was shot at the same time to Western ¨Four Rode Out¨(1969) with similar actors and director.

It contains atmospheric cinematography by Manuel Merino , though mostly available for viewing by way of a chopped-up print and flat cinematography that was dumped onto home video in the Eighties , being really necessary a perfect remastering because of the film copy is washed-out . As well as anticlimatic , cringe-inducing and unappropriate musical score . The motion picture was regularly directed by John Peyser.
