When Bernard Hill died recently, I wrote about the unique feeling accompanying the real-life death of an actor when that actor has been especially associated with a dramatic death scene onscreen. That feeling is only magnified when it’s been a very long time since the actor performed the demise in question. Our friends over at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago are reviving the spirit of late gimmick-master William Castle with a special screening of the horror classic The House on Haunted Hill next month, and they’re pulling out all the stops to recreate the wild theatrical experience that Castle employed at select movie theaters way back in the late 1950s.

The Music Box Theatre tells Bd, “William Castle is throwing a party and you’re invited! We’re rigging up the theatre the way Castle intended. See all your favorite gimmicks and gags at the Music Box Theatre on June 7th at 7:00pm and June 8th at 9:30pm.”

After announcing that this year's Overlook had a record-breaking year in sold-out screenings, audience attendance, and filmmaker guests, the festival revealed their juried and audience winners for features and short films, and trust me when I say that you should keep all of these films on your radar!

"April 6, 2023 | New Orleans, LA – The Overlook Film Festival, the seventh annual celebration of all things horror, announced today the winners of the 2023 juried competition along with the Audience Award recipients.

The Best Short Film honor was awarded to Violet Butterfield: Makeup Artist for the Dead by Brooke H. Cellars. Fidel Ruiz-Healy and Tyler Walker’s Dead Enders received an honorable mention in the category.

The Overlook Film Festival announced today the full lineup for its upcoming 2023 edition, taking place March 30 – April 2 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

“The horror festival will welcome audiences back to America’s most haunted city with 50 films (26 features and 24 short films from 12 countries), along with extensive offerings including interactive events, live performances, immersive programming, parties and more scary surprises,” hypes the press release.

“The festival will open with the world premiere of the highly anticipated modern vampire tale Renfield, starring Nicholas Hoult as the titular tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss, Dracula, played by Oscar winner Nicolas Cage. A Universal Pictures film based on an original idea by The Walking Dead and Invincible creator Robert Kirkman, Renfield is directed by Chris McKay with a screenplay by Ryan Ridley, and will be followed by a live Q&a featuring Nicolas Cage and Chris McKay. Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult’s vampire drama Renfield is set to open the Overlook Film Festival with a world premiere.

And director Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise, executive produced by Sam Raimi, will close the genre film festival, which unveiled its lineup on Tuesday. Evil Dead Rise stars Lily Sullivan, Alyssa Sutherland, Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols and Nell Fisher.

It’s officially a new month and a new week, which means we have a bunch of brand new Blu-ray and DVD releases headed home this Tuesday. The official start to summer is right around the corner, which makes this the perfect time for Steven Spielberg’s Jaws to swim its way into 4K waters for the very first time, in honor of the film’s 45th anniversary this year. And if that wasn’t cool enough, Oscar winner Parasite from filmmaker Bong Joon Ho is also getting a 4K release this week as well.

Kino Lorber is also keeping busy with a pair of Blu-rays to kick off their slate of releases for the month—Let’s Kill Uncle and They Came from Beyond Space—and if you’re a big Creepshow fan, you’re definitely going to want to pick up the new anthology series this week.

As the coronavirus pandemic wreaks havoc on the movie industry, forcing major indoor theater chains to close and new movies to be released in miniature through streaming, the classic B-Movie film Dracula vs. Frankenstein (1971) will be seen on the big screens.

Veteran producer and B-movie showman, Sam Sherman, will take his newly restored reissue of the Independent-International Pictures library of B-Movie drive-in films on a retro roadshow. Special features for the new Blu-rays of Bones, Inseminoid, and Bug have yet to be announced, but all three releases are slated to come out in March of 2020, and we'll be sure to keep Daily Dead readers updated as more details are revealed. Bones Blu-ray: "We’re unleashing the “Dogg” today with the news that that the 2001 horror tale (staring rapper Snoop Dogg) Bones is coming to Blu-ray on March 31st!

The time is 1979. Jimmy Bones (Snoop Dogg) is respected and loved as the neighborhood protector.

Exclusive: Sony Pictures genre label Screen Gems has partnered with Crypt TV, the horror genre brand co-founded by CEO Jack Davis and Eli Roth, to produce a 10-minute short based on the 1960 horror film 13 Ghosts. The pic, which will begin production this winter, is being eyed for an early 2020 release on Crypt’s YouTube and Facebook. The aim is to create longer-form content based on the reception of the short.

Directed by William Castle, the filmmaker behind such horror classics as House on Haunted Hill, The Tingler and Rosemary’s Baby, the original 13 Ghosts centered on a family who inherited a house harboring 13 diabolical spirits.

Sony released a 2001 remake, which was directed by Steve Beck.

Home and Film4 have announce the programme for the fourth annual FilmFear season – the biggest programme yet will comprise six days of horror, extreme cinema, cult favourites and special guests coming to Manchester this October.

Kicking off the season on Tuesday 29 October will be a special preview of The Lighthouse, director Robert Eggers’ much-anticipated follow-up to his folk-horror debut The Witch (2015). Starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe as lighthouse keepers battling the elements, isolation, inner demons and more on a remote and mysterious Maine island in the 1890s, the eerie period tale will be on general release in January 2020 making Home audiences amongst the first to see the film in the UK. FilmFear and Home will also tour the film to Hyde Park Picture House in Leeds the following evening.

While at the 2019 SXSW Film Festival last week, Daily Dead had the opportunity to catch up with writer/director Richard Bates Jr. as well as co-stars Robert Patrick and Amanda Crew to talk about their darkly comedic battle for the ages, Tone-Deaf (you can read my review Here). The film follows millennial Olive (Crew) as she sets out for a quick vacation away from it all, renting a house from the prickly homeowner Harvey (Patrick), who decides he’s over tolerating younger generations and unleashes his rage on his unsuspecting tenant.

During our interview, the trio discussed bringing the film to SXSW as part of their Midnighter series, the inspiration behind the story of Tone-Deaf, digging into these wildly different characters, and more.

So, how do you feel now that Tone-Deaf is out in the world finally?

Richard Bates Jr.: I was so happy with how it went. Because...

Following in the footsteps of trailblazing publicity hound Carl Denham, William Castle learned that if you can’t bring your audience to the sideshow, bring the sideshow to them – the 3D craze of the 50’s allowed him to do just that.

After toying with the format in 1953’s Fort Ti and 1954’s Jesse James vs. the Daltons, the adventurous director upped the ante with even more extravagant promotional stunts for his late 50’s thrillers Macabre and House on Haunted Hill. Even the vinegary gossip columnist Louella Parsons had kind words for Haunted Hill and with its success Castle suddenly found himself spending more time on gimmicks than coherent story lines.

The first four films from that cockeyed era are collected in William Castle at Columbia – Volume One – a Blu ray set from the UK’s ever-reliable Indicator featuring some of the most memorably peculiar entertainments to ever confound and delight the neighborhood bijou.

  The second wave of titles for Ithaca Fantastik was announced today. The people at Scream Factory have made their name releasing special edition Blu-rays of horror movies primarily from the ’80s and ’90s, the decades that fans of my generation first fell in the love with the genre, and, as a result, produced the movies we hold most dear. But Scream Factory has also branched out in their later years, releasing not only contemporary films (through their partnership with IFC Midnight), but classics as well. Three classic catalogue titles recently made their Blu-ray debuts as part of the this trend: one lesser-known effort from John Carpenter and two from the great William Castle.

It's been a long time since I've seen Strait-Jacket, but it's just as odd and as much fun as I remember. William Castle rarely lets me down; his films have a comforting glee in them, just as the weirdness descends like a welcome blanket on a cold day. For those unitiated, he directed The Tingler, Mr. Sardonicus, 13 Ghosts, House on Haunted Hill, and was producer of Rosemary's Baby, among many other films.  As of today, you can get Strait-Jacket (as well as The Tingler) from Scream Factory, and what a terrific release it is. For all you genre fans who enjoy more serialized storytelling, August 21st features some truly excellent seasons of a variety of cable television series, including the final ten episodes of Ash vs Evil Dead, season 8 of The Walking Dead, and the first season of The Terror, and Kino Lorber has put together a 20th anniversary Blu-ray for Deep Rising. Scream Factory is keeping busy with William Castle’s The Tingler and Strait-Jacket on tap this week, and Shout Select has a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray of David Lynch’s Wild at Heart coming home as well.

Transilvania Film Festival audiences have been savvy about off-beat films from bizarre quarters for many years, thoroughly appreciating the efforts of fest organizers, who scout out and embrace provocative work. This year, Czech Republic’s Shockproof Film Festival has been given carte-blanche by Transilvania to program its own selection of schlock gems.

The lineup surely ranks as highly as any in its embrace of film that is both cheap and offensive – and thoroughly relishing both qualities. Shockproof founder Petr Saroch, who has been screening “all forms of low-brow, bad taste, trash and fun outside of the realm of run-of-the-mill” for 14 years at Prague’s Kino Aero, says Transilvania crowds should expect the best of the worst this year.
