Now, Hare This

Bugs's Character is well loved here, and I can't say I dislike the Big bad wolf and his son either, They are fine characters but not (as I said) Notable in any way. He's amusing with bugs and while the formula does seem a little stressed in this cartoon, It's not horrible and works fine for what it his. Of course the largest drawback of the cartoon is its Quite simple animation. This was a later cartoon in the Time of bugs bunny, so understandably the animation is not as pleasant as it was before. But to be honest, If I picture myself watching this when I was younger I would be doing two things. Laughing, and Not noticing the simplistic animation. Since I watched a lot of television animation by Hanna Barbara when I was younger, the animation probably wasn't noticeable or a drawback for me.

So for the cartoon it is, I can't necessarily hate it, while It is a little more obscure than some other Bugs cartoons.

This is a good, if average, short that is worth watching, but it's not going to have you rolling on the floor. Bugs has a few good lines, but the sight gags are predictable and the jokes are mostly retreads. You've seen it before and likely done better. Fun cartoon, but nothing special. False Hare is funnier. Worth seeing at least once, though. Recommended for die-hards and completists.

The Looney Tunes cartoons more than once that they could parody fairy-tale stories and characters very well and even brilliantly. 'Little Red Riding Hood', 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears', 'Jack and the Beanstalk' and 'The Three Little Pigs' primarily. This incarnation of Big Bad Wolf was a fun character and a case of the character being better than the cartoons themselves. One couldn't go much wrong with one of Looney Tunes' and animation's most famous characters Bugs Bunny.

Bugs certainly did far better cartoons than 'Now Hare This', though through no fault of Bugs. Ones that were funnier, more inspired in story and more imaginative and varied in material. 'Now Hare This' is still fun and worth watching, especially since we were approaching the period when the quality of the Looney Tunes cartoons declined. Just not a must see and there are better parodies of fairy-tales around that are sharper, funnier and more original.

Not that 'Now Hare This' isn't funny. It actually is pretty humorous. It would have benefitted though from more laughs and a few of them are very predictable agreed and like pale rehashes. The same goes with the story, which could have been sharper in places.

While the nephew has some amusing rapport with Big Bad Wolf, he doesn't add an awful lot and irritates a bit at times.

However, Bugs is true to character, crafty, arrogant with razor sharp comic timing, with a sparkling chemistry with the cartoon's antagonist Big Bad Wolf, an amusing and well contrasted character if not one of Bugs' greatest adversaries. The animation could have done with more smoothness in the drawing at times, but the vibrant colours and rich in detail backgrounds still remain. Milt Franklyn may not be at his best, but his score here is still distinctively Franklyn, meaning lively in character and very attractive orchestration. Nothing cheap or discordant here.

Mel Blanc provides typically exuberant and individual voice acting, especially as Bugs. Not unexpectedly, as Bugs is one of his best roles. There is enough wit in the dialogue and the gags are not inspired as such but at least amuse and bring smiles.

In a nutshell, worth seeing but Bugs has done better. 7/10

The Big Bad Wolf, egged on by his little nephew, is out to catch Bugs Bunny in this uninspired short from Bob McKimson and Tedd Pierce. The Big Bad Wolf is lame with only his amusing accent (thanks to the great Mel Blanc) providing any real laughs. His nephew is a cute character but nothing special. The colors are nice but the animation overall is pretty poor and cheap-looking. Underwhelming score from Milt Franklyn. This is one of those cartoons where Bugs is winning so effortlessly you just lose interest. It's really not much fun. The final joke is about as corny as they get. The worst thing about this cartoon is that it actually gets a sequel in False Hare, the final Bugs short released in the classic era.

This time it's both "Red Riding Hood" and "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" that get the full "Looney Tunes" satiric treatment from director Robert McKimson and writer Tedd Pierce.

Despite the fact that spoofing classic fairy tales has been done many times before by the looney experts at "That's All, Folks!", there's still plenty of life -- and plenty of fun -- in the familiar, tried-and-true device.

In fact, the wolf and his nephew here make absolutely delightful antagonists.

In short, "Now Hare This" is definitely recommended.
