Pontianak = female bloodsucker.

Shaw Studios' riposte was "Anak Pontianak" aka "Son of Pontianak' in 1958 starring the studio's leading lady Hashimah Yon and its male heartthrob Jins Shamsuddin.This horror film also featured a host of supernatural beings,besides the Pontianak and her werewolf son there was also a Polong(in the film the creature was shown as a kind of Mr Hyde alter-ego of one of the characters)and a Hantu Ular or Snake Ghost.Cathay made three more Pontianak movies "Pontianak Kembali" aka "Pontianak Returns","Pusaka Pontianak" aka "The Legacy of Pontianak" and "Pontianak Gua Musang" aka "Pontianak of the Civet Cave",but by then the Malay film studio was in decline owing to the small market for Malay language films and the competition from the Indonesian studios,which were releasing films in colour.7 out of 10.
