A good example of Spanish crime films

Hello, this is Spain calling... and making crime films. So don't expect a revolutionary plot: this movie narrates the investigation of a crime which has been charged to an innocent guy. Casualties of life, his father is a policeman, who will discover the activities of some young people (drugs, poker, girls abuse). The idea is clear: youth has lost its moral, and only the older generation (who fought for their country and built those kids) can make it work again.

Besides this simple exercise on repressive ideology we can read the name of Ignacio Ferrés Iquino, one of the most underrated Spanish filmmakers (he successfully directed all kind of genres, from comedy to western, from sci-fi to sex movies) but an effective constructor of realistic environments and dramatic situations. Not a movie for film history, but a good example of general Francisco Franco's favorite kind of cinema. If we forget its morality, we can find a nice film behind. Rating: 6 out of 10.

A tangled story focusing on urban delinquents professionally directed by prolific Ignacio F. Iquino

This Iquino movie focused with a moral sense , dealing with rebel youth, stuck in hustle and bustle , with little desire to work, of a certain accommodation , as opposed to a generation that suffered from the war. A group of misguided young men , including some women with an idle life , go frequently to Bongos , a fashionable dance club among young people in Barcelona . Alberto Torres (Manuel Gil) is in love with Susana (Mercedes Ayuso), but she only has eyes for Fernando (Fernando León), whom she is going to marry . When they are both in a club, Alberto ends up injured after hitting the phone booth where he is arguing with Susana. Then the young lady called Susana is stabbed . Alberto is the main suspect in a case being investigated by Torres (Adriano Rimoldi), Alberto's father and the new district commissioner . As the son of Commissario Torres, is the prime suspect, so he will be arrested and interrogated by his own father who is helped by an old fiend (Luis Induni) and Legion's ex-colleague.

In this interesting drama there is violence , fights , action , eroticism , pursuits, discoteque scenes and sensationalism that undermine verisimilitude . It results to be a peculiar whodunit in which young youngsters get together at a music club , but shortly after a girl appears stabbed, and the question is to find out : who is the murderer ?. A passable look at young life and badness in the margined side let the story flow quick and being realized in realistic style but sometimes lacks credibility . The all-rounder Ignacio F. Iquino produced and directed this engaging police and social film, with traces of proto-cinema ¨quinqui¨ , this sub-genre to be developed in the subsequent decades with filmmakers as José Antonio de la Loma with ¨Los Ultimos Golpes del Torete¨ , ¨Yo el Vaquilla¨and Eloy de la Iglesia with ¨Navajeros , "Colegas", "El Pico 1¨ , 2" . Iquino knows how to create a tense environment , in constant movement, with a lot of roles crossed over the course of a night, in which there is room for thugs , swindlers , gay man , pathologically jealous people , hunk men , forceful policemen , sexy women and a variety of music , from pop to rock'n'roll . With the Kroner's Duo (with Tony Ronald) singing : Superguapa, Rock Melody ; Gloria Stewart performing Manhattan Blues , to flamenco, going through French songs sung by Rita Cadillac , singing : Comme il est doux !, Cha-cha-cha corazoncito . Here stands out the early deceased actor Julian Mateos , a famed Spanish player , he acted in all kinds of genres , as Gialli : ¨Cold eyes of fear¨ , Drama : ¨La Celestina¨, ¨Novios De La Muerte¨ and player in US Western as well as Spaghetti as ¨Hellbenders¨ , ¨Four rode out¨ , ¨Catlow¨ , ¨Shalako¨, ¨Return of seven magnificent¨ and even produced ¨Camus's Los Santos Inocentes¨. And Rita Cadillac , she was a famous dancer and stripper at the Crazy Horse, Paris and was a famous French actress, known for ¨El submarino¨ (Das Boot) (1981), ¨Servicio secreto¨ (1961) and ¨Gran jugada en la Costa Azul¨ (1963) , she died at 58 of cancer in 1995 in Deauville, France.

The motion picture was professional but regularly directed by prolific filmmaker Ignacio F Iquino , who often used pseudonym Steve McCoy . He has been considered the Spanish Roger Corman and the "godfather" of a new generation of Catalan filmmakers since 1950s to 1980s, like Directors José Antonio de la Loma, Juan Bosch, or the next Catalan filmmakers from 1980 Ferran Llagostera or Ignasi P. Ferré, and further directors and technicians. However, Iquino is considered to be one of the worst filmmakers of Spanish film history . He wrote , directed and produced lots of films by means of his production company : ¨I. F. I.¨ that financed lots of Westerns such as : ¨Oeste Nevada Joe¨ , ¨Ninguno De Los Tres Llamaba Trinidad¨, ¨La Diligencia De Condenados¨, ¨Fabulosos De Trinidad¨, ¨20 Pasos a Muerte¨ , ¨Dólar a Fuego¨, ¨Abre Tu Fosa Llega Sabata¨ , and ¨5 Pistolas De Texas¨ . Most of them starred by Richard Harrison , Jorge Martin or George Martin , Luis Davila , Daniel Martin or Robert Woods . Iquino was a Spanish craftsman , writing and directing ; working from the 40s in all kind of genres and B movies until the late 80s . Nevertheles, he also directed acceptable films as ¨Historia De Una Escalera¨ based on Antonio Buero Vallejo's novel , ¨El Judas¨, ¨Angeles Al Volante¨, ¨Tambor Del Bruch¨ and ¨Brigada Criminal¨ at his best .

    • Alternate versions
One of the pioneers of the double version, one accommodating the strict moral censorship of Spain (87 minutes), and another with more daring scenes for the export market (97 minutes). Rita Cadillac, a professional stripper from the Crazy Horse (Paris), sings two songs in the Spanish version - a Cha Cha Cha in a disco, and a French song at a gambling house; it's in the foreign version that Rita shows more of herself, and her strip-tease art. The director explains how he created the scene: «"I was in Paris and the Crazy Horse was showing a gal named Rita Cadillac - a wonderful lady. One evening I met her, put her in a car, and brought her to Barcelona. We started shooting, without asking for permits. She was a «stripteuse», at a time when most people got very nervous about «strip-tease». We did one version for the foreign markets, and it was obviously sold all over the world." This quick shooting operation was made possible because at the time, director Federico De Urrutia managed a party room at Castelldefels, a beach village in Baix Llobregat, Barcelona.
