Lovelorn Leghorn

First of all, I would like to say the animation is quite superb, with the help of rod scribner it looks fantastic. And The characters I quite enjoy, Miss prissy is a little two dimensional, but she doesn't appear very often in shorts anyway. I really..... Um.... Yeah that's enough good stuff.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with the plot, Of course this was 1951 so many decisions in the writing are definitely dated to todays society. But even without that this isn't really a funny cartoon for me. The best part of course has to be the gag with the football and watermelon, I almost chuckled there. But it's just more Disney-Esque than anything else so I can't enjoy it outrageously, at all.

Yeah, not a strong one, I haven't seen an Egg scramble so maybe that's better.

`Lovelorn Leghorn' is rather a misleading title, as our Foghorn obviously prefers sunbathing over matters of the heart. He won't be receiving much love either, as he is in for a beating. Not only does the Barnyard Dog beat him to the chase to pull the first prank, but before Foghorn can take revenge, he gets another wallop from Prissy and her roller pin.

It's no wonder that old square britches Prissy has problems, with all those other hens pointing out her shortcomings all the time. As always Foggy is too much of a lumphead to listen to her and points her in the same direction he always did Henery Hawk. He tells her the Barnyard dog is actually a bachelor rooster in disguise. In return the dog shows Prissy how to build one of his ingenious traps. Even with a big ‘Rooster Trap' sign on it, that feathery nutcake of a rooster still helps her to complete it.

Not one of the most memorable Foghorn features. Robert McKimson takes his time in setting up and executing each gag, and therefore the laugh ratio seems to be much lower than usual. Prissy stands in for Henery Hawk quite well, and we do find out there's a whole football field on the farm, but that does not add much.

Miss Prissy's out to find a husband, even if she has to get one by clonking him over the head with a rolling pin. Foghorn Leghorn is, as usual, her primary target and must fend off the pursuing hen while also continuing his never-ending feud with Barnyard Dog. I love Miss Prissy. She's just such a nice, endearing character who also provides lots of laughs in her own special way. A very human character, as most of the Looney Tunes animals were. Bea Benaderet handles the voice for Prissy here (as well as the other hens) and does a marvelous job. Mel Blanc is flawless as always as Foghorn and Barnyard Dog. The music is happy and cheerful. The animation is nice with well-drawn characters and backgrounds. Lovely Technicolor always helps. It's a funny short, if not one of Foghorn's best. The football gag is the funniest, besides Prissy's interactions with the other hens.

The Foghorn Leghorn cartoons are always fun to watch. I don't think they are quite masterpiece status but the best of them are enough to make your day whether it was hard or not. Lovelorn Leghorn is not one of the best of the series, some of it is a little slow with a couple of gags feeling a tad too drawn out and the story is not that much of a surprise. However, the animation is fluid and vibrantly coloured, and the music is upbeat and enhances the action, humour and every character expression perfectly. As always with Foghorn cartoons, there is some sharp witty dialogue(Foghorn as always has the best lines). "Your only chance to get a husband is to trap one" is a classic. The gags do work despite them being rather lengthy in development, the rooster trap gag is for me the highlight of the cartoon. Foghorn steals the show, being as interesting and distinctive as ever and Barnyard Dog is a great foil, I always love how he is mix of butt-of-the-joke and craftily vengeful. Both characters are flawlessly voiced by Mel Blanc. Miss Prissy(ably voiced by Bea Benaderet) is a worthy replacement for Henery, though with a different kind of motivation. All in all, solid fun if not quite among the best of the series. 8/10 Bethany Cox

"Lovelorn Leghorn" probably wasn't the best Looney Tunes cartoon ever, but it certainly has its moments. It features Prissy looking for a husband, so Foghorn Leghorn tells her that Barnyard Dog is a rooster in disguise. After a football sequence, Barnyard clarifies everything and helps Prissy build the most whacked-out "rooster trap" ever, the sort of thing that looks like it was dreamed up by Rube Goldberg.

It was always neat how Foggy had his hillbilly phrases, and how he and Barnyard liked to razz each other. This cartoon makes OK use of everything, so I have to say about it - to quote Prissy: "Ye-e-e-e-e-es." Pretty good.
