    The love cats.

Tom falls for the charms of Toodles, a sexy female feline who just happens to be absolutely minted. The amorous cat tries to impress the girl with gifts—some flowers and Jerry on a leash—but finds that the course of true love never runs smooth, especially when alley-cat Butch becomes his love rival (after a little encouragement from Jerry).

Okay, so the set-up might not be all that original, Tom having fallen for the charms of a sexy female cat a couple of times before, but this cartoon is loaded with such charm that it still remains a lot of fun. (so long as you're not offended by Jerry dancing while in black-face). My favourite moment is an oldie but a goodie: Butch is catapulted out of a room so fast that, for a fraction of a second, he leaves his face behind.

Casanova Cat once again ends with the rather strange sight of Jerry indulging in a spot of inter-species love, the mouse beating out both cats for the attention of Toodles.

Familiar set-up but with entertaining results

Tom and Jerry has always been a huge part of my childhood. Casanova Cat is still entertaining stuff indeed, if not really shaking off the feeling that the whole scenario doesn't come across as something as a surprise. Casanova Cat though does have some good gags, not the most original ones I've seen but they do raise a fair amount of laughs and are still in the spirit of Tom and Jerry as expected. The animation is really beautiful to watch, and the music is very catchy helped by lively orchestration and jazzy-like tempos. All four characters are on top form, with the gags and story playing to their strengths. Tom and Jerry are still a likable duo, Butch is a convincing love rival and Toodles is one of those characters where you can see absolutely what Tom and Butch see in each other.

In conclusion, the set-up is familiar but the results are indeed entertaining. 9/10 Bethany Cox

    • Trivia
The original cartoon included a sequence where Tom blackens Jerry's face with cigar smoke (so that Jerry is now in black-face) and puts him on a plate to tap-dance to a background instrumental of "Old Folks at Home". This has been edited from most television broadcasts, and the cartoon was removed from "Tom and Jerry Spotlight Collection: Volume 3" for this reason; however, it can be found uncut on "Tom and Jerry's Cartoon Cavalcade" VHS Tape.
    • Alternate versions
Some TV versions cut the scene where Jerry's face is made black with the smoke of a cigar and is forced to dance by Tom holding a lighter under the plate he stands on.
