Not the best, it is somewhat strange, but it is also funny and touching

Jerry and the Lion is not one of the better Tom and Jerry cartoons, but it is light years away from being the worst. If I were to categorise the cartoon it would be somewhat strange yet very enjoyable. The story isn't great to be honest, but the art work is gorgeous and the music is a lot of fun. There are enough jokes and visual gags to impress too, I liked it that Tom never sees the Lion and that he always thinks Jerry is the one messing him around. Speaking of the Lion, he is not the best supporting character there is in a Tom and Jerry cartoon, Mammy Two-Shoes gets that honour, but he is a real cutie. I also thought that his and Jerry's tearful goodbye was very touching. Overall, not outstanding but it is underrated and definitely worth the look. 8/10 Bethany Cox

    Tomcat versus big cat.

The local radio station announces that a dangerous lion has escaped from the circus; Tom reacts to this news by locking all the windows, jamming a couch in front of the door, and arming himself with a shotgun. He's too late, though, for the lion is already in the house.

When Jerry encounters the desperate, furry fugitive, he is surprised to discover that big cat is not at all ferocious: he simply wants help to get back to his jungle in Africa. Jerry agrees to help, but first he must get the hungry lion something to eat, and so the pair creep around the house in search of food, the big cat somehow remaining unseen by shotgun-toting Tom, even when the two felines are within inches of each other. The result is a delightfully daft tale with some inventive gags.

6.5 out of 10, rounded up to 7 for IMDb.

    Odd Lion, Odd Cartoon

Tom hears on the radio that a lion has escaped! Everyone is urged to lock their doors, close their windows and be on the alert! Jerry overhears the announcement while at his mouse- hole in the wall. Both of them are petrified and Tom runs around the house shutting all the windows.

The next thing you know, the lion appears in the basement. Jerry spots him first, almost has a heart attack but the lion tells him he just wants food. This is not a ferocious lion; actually a nice guy who just wants to feed his stomach.

The rest of the story deals with what happens in the house. Most of it is the lion swatting Tom, but Tom thinking it's Jerry doing all the damage (because he never sees the lion). He can't believe it. In the end, he's terrified of Jerry!

Jerry helps the lion get back on a boat and they tearfully wave goodbye. Overall, it was a strange lion and a strange cartoon.

Not one of the better ones

Tom the cat is engaging in his favorite pastime, which is chasing after Jerry the mouse of course. Later Tom hears a news bulletin about an escaped circus lion that mortifies him. Turns out the lion is in the basement and employs Jerry's help to get him some food. This isn't one of my preferred Tom & Jery shorts, as I didn't really care for the lion. That said, even not so great Tom and Jerry shorts are a million times better then the sugar coated homogenized crap that passes for kid's cartoons now a days. This cartoon can be found on disc two of the Spotlight collection DVD of "Tom & Jerry"

    I ain't lion

Tom is listening to smooth jazz on the radio when the tunes are interrupted by an announcement claiming that a lion has escaped from the circus. Freaking out, Tom slams shut every window and makes a barricade in the corner where he arms himself with a rifle. Meanwhile, in the basement, Jerry finds the lion hiding in the shadows. He's desperate to get back to Africa as he hates life at the circus. Jerry agrees to help him, but the lion needs a bite to eat.

The joke of the cartoon is that Tom never actually sees the lion, believing that the one foiling him during every attack is Jerry. There's a few good visual jokes and it's one of the better shorts, if forgettable in the long run.

The title is based on the Aesop Fable about Androcles and the Lion. George Bernard Shaw also wrote a play based on the same story of the man who helps a lion and who's kindness later saves him.

[Jerry, having overheard the warning, now comes out from hiding from in a teapot, but when he sees the lion's eyes hiding in the shadows, he just has time to scream, just before the lion catches Jerry, just to ask him for favors, not threaten or scare him]

Lion: Shh! Don't give me away, pal. Don't let 'em catch me. If they take me back to that circus, I'll go crazy. I can't stand that corny music. Or that "crackle, crackle crackle" of them popcorn bags. Say you'll help me get back to the jungle. Please?

[Lion says please with bright white teeth, almost as if posing for a smile]

      Lion: .

[Jerry then nods his head, meaning yes]

Lion: Gee. Thanks, pal. Thanks. Uh, there's just one more little thing.

[Lion opens and closes his mouth, after closing mouth]

      Lion: I'm hungry.

      Jerry: Shh. Shh. Shh.

[Jerry and the lion then go toward the refrigerator. Jerry stops the lion, from being seen, then goes to refrigerator and get an extra-large leg-quarter, of a drumstick and thigh. Tom sees Jerry as he is bringing the meat's leg-quarter to the lion. Tom takes it away, from Jerry, and raises it to where the hidden lion is, behind a curtain, then the lion sniffs the meat and quietly bites off 90% of the piece and starts munching. Tom starts to try to eat it, not knowing that is almost already consumed, by the hidden lion. Tom and Jerry then hear the lion's gulp, as he swallows the meat. Tom gets immediately scared and is starting to aim the rifle toward the curtain until Jerry quickly grabs onto the base of the rifle before it goes off, through the roof of the house, Jerry then pretends to be severely injured and die. As Jerry is opossum, pretending to be dead, Tom goes to an emergency aid kit to patch up any wounds, that he thinks the shot has fallen on Jerry, but while Tom is gone, Jerry and the lion hide, again]
