Real love making this film between Gordon Jackson & Rhona Anderson

Yes they met while making this fascinating film in 1949 and were married in 1951 at Chelsea Register Office.Gordon died in 1990 while Rhona lived to 2013 having two children together while living in Hampstead London NW3.I have several dvds of Rhona especially from the early 50s when she was at her best as an actress.I was very much interested in how they filmed "Floodtide" around Clydebank in Glasgow, Scotland and how the character played by Gordon eventually reconciled with Rhona 's character. Mary, the shipyard's boss.I especially liked the engineering shots at the shipyard, showing riveting, welding ,draught plans and the launch (presumably an actual launch to obtain verisimilitude in the story) to portray the ship that young Shields designed. I saw "Floodtide" tonight on channel 81 (Talking Pictures) which is one of my favourites since it shows films with many British made ones from my youth, some of which I remember as a 72 year old and which are not often shown on freeview tv services elsewhere.

    Good If Formulaic

Gordon Jackson is the son of a farmer, and of a long line of farmers, going back to the '45. But he wants to build ships. His father doesn't like this, but his grandmother backs him. Off he goes to Glasgow, where he starts at the bottom. And for thirty minutes he stays stuck there, until his boss's boss hears about his complaints, and back him in training. After he graduates with honors, he's given his big chance to design a cruise ship. All the fuddy-duddies harrumph, but the big bosses back him, and the even the naysayers want to shake his hand. He's also in love with his boss's daughter, Rona Anderson, and she with him. But given his background he can't do anything about it. And, as his ship is about to go down the ways, he disappears from the yards, because his old girlfriend, Elizabeth Sellars, decides to sink her claws into him.

It's one of those movies about how bright young men are being given their chances in the brave new world of post-war Britain, no matter how humble their origins. The cast is sprinkled with fine actors, and everyone does a fine job. The problem is that this is set up as a formula picture, with much of the important stuff taking place off screen: the training, the time spent working on the plans, and so forth. Jackson is fine, and so is Miss Anderson: so much so they married two years later and stayed together until his death in 1990 at the age of 66. But if you're expecting more than a tale of Youth Triumphant Because Youth Is Wise, you'll be disappointed in a well made picture.

Pleasant film about a dull subject

Shipbuilding and designing is not exactly the most exciting of subjects. The fact that this film holds the attention is a tribute to the cast of fine Scottish actors.Gordon Jackson was a fine actor who starred in many films, opposite his wife to be Rona Ashrton. No film about Scotland would be complete without an appearance by John Lauri. The comedian Jimmy Logan plays Jackson's bst friend. The story is focused on Jacksons ambition to become a ship designer and the obstacles he has to overcome to achieve that ambition.I am sure that the inhabitants of Glasgow will be fascinated to see what their city looked like just after the war, when I still had a significant part to play in the building of the ships of the world.

    Floodtide review

Gordon Jackson bags a rare leading role as a young working class Scot with a flair for designing ships. Not only does he work his way through the ranks of a Clyde shipbuilding company owned by Jack Lambert, he also woos Lambert's daughter, played by Jackson's soon-to-be wife Rona Anderson. More entertaining than expected.

At the end of the film as Gordon Jackson and Rona Anderson are walking from the cliff top, it is obvious the two people are stand-ins (the girl has fair hair and a pony-tail!)

Joe Drummond: But you're working on the Clyde, boy, and that's an honour in itself if you'd the sense to see it. Ship-building started here more than a hundred years ago. Take away the Clyde and Britain would be sunk in any war we ever had to fight. This is the cradle of the craft my lad, all about you.
