If we’re holding up the all-time best bank robbery movies, a special place is reserved for classics like Bonnie and Clyde, Dog Day Afternoon, Heat, and a handful more. But when it comes to the most underrated recent cinematic bank heists, Christian Gudegast’s 2018 movie Den of Thieves ranks right up there with the most entertaining and hyper-violent examples like The Town, Point Break, Hell or High Water, and the like. Now that Gudegast recently unloaded Den of Thieves 2: Pantera on the masses this January, it’s high time to reflect on the making of the original.
While a tad long and baldly inspired by Michael Mann’s Heat, Den of Thieves was released in January 2018 to commercial success and middling critical acclaim. For those in the dark, the story concerns a unit of former Marines turned bank robbers called The Outlaws led by Ray Merrimen (Pablo Schreiber...

You may not known George Schenck by name, but you know his work. He contributed to decades worth of memorable television dating back to the 1970s. He worked with various networks, and is partially responsible for keeping NCIS going strong during its first decade and a half on CBS.
Schenck passed away on August 3 at the age of 82. He died peacefully, according to Deadline, at his home in Brentwood, California. Mark Harmon who worked alongside Schenck for 16 seasons, issued a statement upon hearing the news.
Mark Harmon credits Schenck with changing the show "Alibi" -- The NCIS team is forced to re-examine a hit-and-run murder case when a former FBI agent turned lawyer confides in Gibbs that her client’s confidential alibi is solid. Meanwhile, McGee grows suspicious of Tony’s strange behavior, on NCIS Tuesday, Nov. 12 on the CBS Television Network. Pictured: Mark Harmon Photo: Michael Yarish/CBS ©2013 CBS Broadcasting,...

George Schenck, who served as a writer, producer and/or co-showrunner on NCIS during the CBS drama’s first 15 seasons, died Saturday at his home in Los Angeles, a network spokesperson announced. He was 82.
He and Frank Cardea shared a creative partnership for 40 years. In addition to collaborating on NCIS, they created the 1982-83 CBS adventure series Bring ‘Em Back Alive, starring Bruce Boxleitner; the 1984-86 CBS crime show Crazy Like a Fox, starring Jack Warden and John Rubinstein; and the 1991-92 ABC drama Pros and Cons, starring James Earl Jones and Richard Crenna.
After writing nearly 50 episodes of NCIS starting with show’s inaugural season in 2003, the pair were elevated to co-showrunners in November 2016 following the sudden death of Gary Glasberg two months earlier. “It’s with heavy hearts that we assume his duties,” they said at the time.

How often do we see a sequel to a spinoff that is actually a lot of fun? What if you then also made it a tragic love story that involves zombies? That sounds like a Roger Corman or Troma movie but in actuality it’s Return of the Living Dead III (watch it Here) and its from channel favorite Brian Yuzna. Return of the Living Dead is a stone cold classic and is one that I sometimes prefer watching over any of the original Romero trilogy due to how different it is and how it sets up its own rules. Part 2 I have great memories of seeing on TV at my Nana’s house in Santa Ana, California on an old tube TV. It skates that Evil Dead II line of leaning much further into the comedy realm than the first, which is pretty funny in its own way and right.

Whitesnake are reissuing and expanding their covers album, The Purple Album, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of singer David Coverdale joining Deep Purple.
Originally released in 2015, The Purple Album was recorded by Coverdale along with guitarist Reb Beach, bassist Michael Devin, guitarist Joel Hoekstra, and drummer Tommy Aldridge, who, at the time, was appearing on a Whitesnake studio album for the first time since 1989. The collection cherry-picked songs from the three LPs Coverdale recorded with Deep Purple: Burn (1974), Stormbringer (1974), and Come Taste the Band (1975).
ETitled The Purple Album: Special Gold Edition, the upcoming expanded reissue is set to drop October 13th on 2-cd/Blu-Ray and double-lp vinyl formats — 50 years after Coverdale joined the Deep Purple.
In addition to the original tracklist in remixed/remastered form, the expanded edition also houses a plethora of bonus material, including unreleased recordings, live cuts, alternate mixes, video supplements (on the Blu-Ray version), and, most notably,...

To be honest, I was feeling a little apprehensive about the roughly five-hour-long Dead Island 2 demo I recently got the chance to play. I enjoyed (but certainly didn’t love) the original Dead Island, and the sequel’s rocky development certainly raised a few red flags. Besides, we’re not exactly hurting for zombie games. I just couldn’t imagine how Dead Island 2 was going to separate itself from the horde.
As it turns out, the game almost instantly stood out by virtue of following the example set by one of my favorite zombie films ever: 1985’s The Return of the Living Dead.
Essentially an early meta-horror movie, Return of the Living Dead takes place in a world where the Night of the Living Dead film exists (its actual connections to that franchise are fascinating and complicated). One day, a worker at a medical supply warehouse is trying to impress...

Michelle Yeoh introduced Hong on stage, saying: “There is one of us that has been supporting ensembles for longer than any of us has been alive.”
Holding Hong’s hand, she continued: “He’s been acting since there were only forty-nine states and he just turned 94 years young!
“And it’s been 69 years in the making to get him to this stage. Our patriach, our friend, our Gong Gong, James Hong.”
As the audience gave him a standing ovation, Hong addressed them in Cantonese, with Yeoh jumping in to translate him, saying: “Friends, relatives... so happy that you are all here tonight.

Jonathan Littman, who helped launch Jerry Bruckheimer Television and has led the prolific TV company for the past 25 years, most recently as CEO, is leaving and plans to launch his own production company. Under Littman’s exit agreement, he will stay involved in several of Jbtv’s series, including CSI: Vegas and The Amazing Race, which are the very first two Jbtv series (or a followup in the case of Vegas) to get on the air.
There is no word on replacement yet. Littman’s departure leaves KristieAnne Reed as the most senior executive at Jbtv.
“The last 25 years have been the ride of a lifetime and stepping away was a difficult decision. Having just celebrated our 25th anniversary and given the stability of our incredible executive team, this felt like the right time to step off and pursue a growing desire of mine to start my own company,” said Littman.

Two-fisted Hong Kong racketeer Clark Gable goes out on a limb to recover Susan Hayward’s husband, held prisoner in Red China. In a literal pirate vessel armed with a stolen cannon, Gable literally goes to war, risking his smuggling empire by half-kidnapping Michael Rennie’s Hong Kong cop. This lush CinemaScope action-travelogue-romance now comes off as comfort food movie viewing: familiar stars doing what they do best. It’s a German import from a Hollywood Studio whose library titles may no longer be licensed to hard media home video.

Fiery dame Susan Hayward carries this far-flung ‘women’s epic’ to delirious romantic extremes, as her Irish heroine defies nature and exploits admirers to claim the hunky Dutchman of her dreams. Using apartheid-ridden South Africa as a background for a cheerful white conquest wasn’t as touchy an idea in 1955 as it is now, but it should have been. Just the same, Henry King’s film is an impressive production from the early years of CinemaScope.

Exclusive: James Hong who has been acting since the 1950s has been fighting for parity for Asian actors for decades. With the success of Warner Bros.’ Crazy Rich Asians this weekend employing an Asian cast in all leading roles, the 89 year-old Hong said, “I never thought it would take this long.”
It is, indeed, a watershed moment for Hollywood as this now becomes only the second major studio film outside of The Joy Luck Club in 1993 released with a full Asian cast. Hong, who has around 500 credits (not counting voiceovers like the character of Mr. Ping in the Kung Fu Panda film franchise) has, through impossible odds, racked up the most credits of any actor — living or dead — in Hollywood.
He also soon became a role model to the next generation of Asian actors, as Jason Scott Lee told Deadline three years ago.

After the events of Night 1’s encounter with Tom Clancy’s The Division, I was hell-bent on making sure Night 2 was going to be an error-free success. My next mission was to begin the effort of taking back Manhattan. It wasn’t going to be easy, though. Instead of going it alone, I decided it was time to partner up my Cinegents (Cinelinx Agents, it’s a working name).
Once I logged in, I saw my good buddy Tyler (a.k.a. DarkStar50420, a.k.a. Phillip Freedom), Eric (a.k.a. Fathergamer, a.k.a. Sheriff Eric), and Rob (a.k.a. Ntropi_69, a.k.a. No other actor in the long history of horror has been so closely identified with the genre as Boris Karloff, yet he was as famous for his gentle heart and kindness as he was for his screen persona. William Henry Pratt was born on November 23, 1887, in Camberwell, London, England. He studied at London University in anticipation of a diplomatic career; however, he moved to Canada in 1909 and joined a theater company where he was bit by the acting bug. It was there that he adopted the stage name of “Boris Karloff.” He toured back and forth across the USA for over ten years in a variety of low-budget Theater shows and eventually ended up in Hollywood. Needing cash to support himself, Karloff landed roles in silent films making his on-screen debut in Chapter 2 of the 1919 serial The Masked Rider. His big...

I saw American Sniper last night, and hated it slightly less than I expected to. Like most Clint Eastwood movies – and I like Clint Eastwood movies for the most part – it's a simple, well-lit little fairy tale with the nutritional value of a fortune cookie that serves up a neatly-arranged helping of cheers and tears for target audiences, and panics at the thought of embracing more than one or two ideas at any time.
It's usually silly to get upset about the self-righteous way Hollywood moviemakers routinely turn serious subjects into baby food.

As everyone knows, it’s a time-honored New Year’s tradition to not only make resolutions about all of the things you are really going to do better in the coming year, but also to share them with friends so they can encourage you to not be a bum and totally forget about all of your well-meaning promises. So naturally, my bestie Deadpool sent me a draft of his list and, just as naturally, I figured all of you would want to see it so you can be inspired towards your own lofty New Year’s goals. Therefore:
Deadpool’s List of Stuff I’m Definitely Going To Do Sometime In 2015… Probably:
Wash that weirdly pulsating pile of uniforms in the corner of the bedroom before it escapes and eats New York. Use actual detergent and stuff. Kill/maim/otherwise injure more bad people …Don’t kill/maim/otherwise injure any more good people?...

There are an endless myriad of games that have faced the mighty wand of censorship over the years. There’s Final Fantasy VI‘s attempted suicide scene, the blood turned magically into “sweat” in the Snes version of a not-so-Mortal Kombat, the Muslim inspired music and symbology of The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time, and, of course, the infamous “hot coffee” incident in the coding of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
It’s no surprise really, when you consider the progeny of censored media that came before it. Music, one of the oldest forms of art in existence, has gone through plenty of censorship issues over the course of the last 40 years, particularly in the rap, punk, and metal genres. Comics also struggled with various issues deemed “too offensive” to be dealt with or understood by its perceived youthful culture, and discussion continues to this day of the Motion Picture Production Code,...

With a new Wolfenstein game just over the horizon, we look back at a franchise that's consistently reflected gaming trends over the years
Feature
Wolfenstein 3D didn’t need to have an interesting plot. When you are inventing the first person shooter genre, realistically the only things that matter are the mechanics and your ability to get players used to looking through the eyes of their character without getting motion sickness.
The pedants might jump up and down and remind us that Wolfenstein was technically not the first to do this, with games like Maze War dabbling in this as far back as the 70s, but regardless it was the first major title to pull it off. As a result, this meant that the threadbare plot of being stuck in a Nazi prison-castle and having to escape didn’t need anything more complicated than that. Additionally, the Nazi is the...

The debate surrounding video game violence continues to rage as games become ever-more realistic, and even as hardened gamers, we often find ourselves shocked by the gratuitous, often provocative violence we see on screen.
Though the majority of games teach us to be flippant with regard to killing enemies, and in turn this desensitises us, these 10 games certainly reminded us what real violence was, and that when dealt with in a graphic enough manner, a facetious tone won’t be enough to make us laugh it off.
Some of these games sparked a moral outrage, some were seen as awesome by bloodhounds the world over, and some of them made us lose our lunch. Here are 10 excessively violent video game moments that shocked the world…

I played Raven Software’s Soldier of Fortune for the first time when I was far too young.

Disclaimer: There is a solid chance, thanks to Steam's constant updating (not to mention the indisputable fact that Steam is simply the human name for a nighmarish labyrinth of blood-filled tubes and downloadable hats from an eternal dimension of meat and howling), that my save file corrupted during the review process. Of course, for a consummate professional, this isn't a problem - it's simply a case of restarting the game from the beginning, relaxing into a £7,000 GameXtreme Hyperthrone and ordering a trusty manservant to fetch another roasted swan neck and towering pile of cocaine, all served from a golden platter hand-polished by the Queen herself. Gor Bless'er.
Unfortunately, given that I am gaming journalism's equivalent of a Dickensian urchin whose daily activities run to nicking handkerchiefs and avoiding Australia, I am in a position where I must review the experience which the game presented to me. Any gaps in my...

"True Blood's" Season 5 finale was just as bloody as exiting showrunner Alan Ball promised.
Shocking? Not so much.
Let's tally the bodies -- and goop -- shall we?
(Warning: Spoilers Ahead!)
By chugging the last of Lilith's blood, Bill (Stephen Moyer) apparently met his true death -- dissolving like the Wicked Witch at Sookie (Anna Paquin) and Eric's (Alexander Skarsgard) feet.
Unfortunately (sorry, we are on Team Kill Bill) -- he was reborn, arising nude and blood-drenched like Lilith, as Eric ordered Sookie to run for her life.
At least we know who the big bad will be in Season 6?
Before deifying himself, Bill flattered Salomé into believing Lilith told him she was the true prophet. She sealed the deal by drinking Bill's silver-poisoned blood mickey. If there's anything worse than a true death, it has to be Bill lecturing you about your "impatience" during your last agonizing seconds.

His big...

There's a disturbing trend amongst shooter games of late, to make games more and more realistic to really drive home the harsh realities of war (or up the shock value). Games like Modern Warfare 2 and Soldier of Fortune have pushed the limits of what developers can get away with when by putting players in control of scenarios like killing civilians, or portraying gory deaths. For some, it may be too much to stomach, but for others it helps to virtually drive home just what real soldiers have to deal with on the battlefield. 2K Games' latest release, Spec Ops: The Line, can now be added to the list of games that attempt to bring to life how taxing battle can be on the human body, and, more importantly, the human psyche.

The military magazine Soldier of Fortune has teamed up with American comic book publisher Bluewater Productions to launch a new fictional adventure series called Soldier of Fortune Presents: Stealth.
With superhero soldiers such as Captain America and G.I. Joe making the leap from comics to the big screen - and a Sgt Rock adaptation also on the way - the two publishers hope to add to that long and distinguished legacy. And there's already talk of turning the comic into a TV series.
The new action-adventure comic, which is scheduled to debut in June, is written by best-selling author Marc Shapiro and drawn by Steven Black.
It centres on a fictional secret special ops team hired by the government to do the jobs that the military is unable to undertake, for practical or political reasons.
"Finally a real adventure graphic novel for real men," said Lt. Col. Robert K.

Bluewater Productions has announced a Soldier of Fortune Presents: Stealth comic. Written by bestselling author Marc Shapiro and illustrated by Steven Black, the title is the product of the publisher's collaboration with Soldier of Fortune magazine. The series will focus around a black ops team hired by the Us government to do the jobs that the military is unable or unwilling to carry out. "I'm writing Soldier of Fortune with the idea of creating the ultimate war comic," said Shapiro. "Lots of action, lots of humor, lots of character and more firepower than you can shake a bazooka at. This week on Forgotten Gems we aren’t going back too far, a little over eleven years to be exact. Just before the launch of the Playstation 2, at a time when the PC gaming market was still strong and healthy. Soldier of Fortune was a first person shooter developed by U.S based Raven Software, known for realism within its shooting. Originally relesed for Windows in March of 2000 the title later hit the Playstation 2 and Dreamcast.

Like many of you, I’m currently playing my way through the addictive zombie survival RPG Dead Island. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the game is its ridiculously over-the-top violence, with decapitated heads and bloodied limbs regularly flying through the air in satisfying slow-mo. It’s not particularly shocking – with the gore being exaggerated, as well as the fact that it’s now common to see such graphic violence in a video game.
But, while such gore is frequent in games nowadays, this kind of black knight style evisceration can be traced back to Activision‘s 2000 shooter Soldier of Fortune. Unparallelled at the time for its depiction of violence, the game utilized a new engine named Ghoul – capable of depicting enemy dismemberment and specific weapon damage to different parts of the body. Bulletstorm, an excellent new first-person shooter from People Can Fly and Epic Games (Gears of War), has been recently singled out for the way it rewards particularly gruesome acts of violence. For example, players can earn “Skill Shots” for blowing off an arm (Surgeon), shooting an enemy in the neck (Gag Reflex), and impaling an enemy on a large cactus (Pricked). These aren’t minor features, but a central aspect of the gameplay.

Here's the bit you won't see in the 'Making Of' documentary: when they were bottling The Expendables in the lab during pre-production, they kept it in a beaker that said 'Manly'. They injected seven extra Y chromosomes into the solution as it solidified into a feature length motion picture.
Overnight they wrapped it up in a bathrobe made out of sandpaper, sprayed it with Sex Panther aftershave and forced it to watch monster truck races on TV whilst an ex-Navy Seal gym coach shouted, "You Da Man!" at it repeatedly. This, gentlemen and not-so-gentlemen, is how The Expendables developed.

Chicago – The 2010 version of “The A-Team” (read our review here) may have been a bit of a disappointment at the box office this weekend (producers learned that there’s only space for one ’80s throwback per weekend as Hannibal and B.A. got their ass kicked by “The Karate Kid” — read our review here), but enough people saw it that it probably inspired a bit of nostalgia for the original show or interest by a younger generation who may not be sure why Mr. T. was famous. Collectors should immediately track down the awesomely-packaged “The A-Team: The Complete Series.”
DVD Rating: 3.5/5.0
It’s tough for studios to figure out how to spark renewed interest in television shows that have already been available on DVD for years. The last season of “The A-Team” came out on DVD almost four years ago, so what could they possibly tie in with the new movie with Liam Neeson,...

Don’t you hate that “Yellow Submarine” is on Revolver? The song is okay on its own, but it’s a touch of cartoonish psychedelia that disrupts the record for me, which has some of my favorite Beatles songs (“Eleanor Rigby,” “Taxman”) on it.
I will say, however, that I love “Octopus’s Garden.”
So welcome to This Week in Comics, where every day is a comic book and every day is also Yellow Submarine.

Here’s something I didn’t expect: Rashida Jones doing her own celebrity cash-in comic. It’s a decent premise, I suppose — an heiress is really a secret agent!!! — and it’s written by a couple of pro writers as opposed to some cheap hack. It could be good, but maybe we should wait for the movie instead?...

If you’ve been playing Team Fortress 2 ever since it launched in 2007, and have been wanting to show your veteran status off to everyone else, today’s your day.
Along with the game’s 119th update will be three different medals that will affix themselves to each and everyone’s chest, displaying how long you have been a part of the TF2 community.
There are three different medals, all signifying different levels of veteran status.
[Gold] Grizzled Veteran – First played 0-3 months after release [Silver] Soldier of Fortune – First played 3 months – 1 year after release [Bronze] Weekend Warrior – First played 1 year after release – present
The medals can bee seen below.
In typical Valve tradition, the post itself was quite funny, especially one part in particular. As you can see in the header image, there is an asterisk after the “We couldn’t have done it without You*!”
Along the side of the post is text that reads,...

Recently, I was able to attend a press conference for the new movie “From Paris With Love.” In the film John Travolta plays special agent Charlie Wax, a trigger-happy, wisecracking, loose cannon who's been sent to Paris to stop a terrorist attack.
Here’s what Travolta and his co-star Jonathan Rhys Meyers had to say about the film...
You've done so many roles but you really made this one real. What did you do to prepare for this role?
Travolta: Well, thank you, firstly. But I think that between Pierre [Morel], Luc [Besson] and myself there were a lot of discussions about this guy. It was beautifully written and so he was easy to fill because the verbiage was so ideal for me to attack. The look was very important in this movie and we saw 'Soldier of Fortune' covers where these guys are suddenly – I don't know why – but...

John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers premiered their outrageous action-thriller 'From Paris with Love' in New York Thursday night, and John talked to "The Insider" about his mercy mission to Haiti! John and wife Kelly Preston flew 22 doctors plus medics along with several tons of supplies to earthquake-stricken Haiti with the help of Qantas, and he said, "The important part of this is that the supplies that we brought were able to stay with those doctors. … They've handled hundreds of people already." In 'From Paris with Love,' in theaters February 5, John sports a bold bald look and a dastardly goatee as Charlie Wax, a loose-cannon CIA agent who takes low-level operative James Reese (Meyers) under his wing, giving him more action and bullet-dodging than he ever imagined possible as they attempt to thwart a terrorist attack. When James discovers he's a crime ring target, he realizes...

This week's iPhone gaming round-up happens to feature two games with zombies in them. I expected as much in the first title. The second's incorporation of the undead, however, was a pleasant surprise.
"Dawn of the Dead" ($1.99)
It takes less than five minutes to crave a better control scheme in "Dawn of the Dead." Ironically, it takes less than fifteen to conquer the game's lackluster campaign. Like a smaller "Soldier of Fortune," "Dawn of the Dead" is a run-and-gun shooter that pits you against zombie hordes as a well-armed survivor. Each level has a special hook to it -- "beat the timer," "find this key," or "stay alive" -- but its clunky on-screen controls and senseless AI fail to entertain. It's best to avoid this unless you're an über-zombie game-fan.
"Trenches" ($1.99)
With a playful art direction and solid mechanics, "Trenches" is impressive. It's a horizontal tower defense title set during World War I.

Elegant star of Us TV series from the 1950s onwards
For any regular television viewer in the 1960s and 70s, the elegant actor Gene Barry, who has died aged 90, was inescapable. Most prominent was his portrayal of the Los Angeles police captain Amos Burke in 81 episodes of Burke's Law (1963-66). No ordinary cop, Burke was an immaculately dressed, jet-setting millionaire bachelor who left his Beverly Hills mansion in a chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royce to investigate a murder. Barry as Burke, a wisecracking, sophisticated ladies' man, was the nearest thing on TV to Cary Grant.
Each episode – bursting with Hollywood guest stars, one of whom was revealed as a murderer – allowed Burke to deliver an aphorism such as "never drink martinis with beautiful suspects: Burke's Law", or "never ask a question unless you already know the answer. Burke's Law".
Before playing Burke, Barry had triumphed in the western TV series Bat Masterson (1958-...
