Born on Shrove Monday: West German HEIMATFILM with Ruth NIEHAUS

The dramatic finale of this love story takes place on Shrove Monday, but first it is about the summer before.

Shortly before the First World War, the handsome lieutenant Hans (Dietmar SCHÖNHERR) falls in love with the enchanting flower seller Anna (Ruth NIEHAUS). At the time, this is still quite a scandal, as the military is at the top of the hierarchy in German-speaking countries. Hans is already engaged to the wealthy commercial councilor's daughter Ingeborg (Elma KARLOWA). But she is actually more into mature men and has already set her sights on the graying bon vivant Georg (Willy BIRGEL, who also directed the film). A little back and forth: misunderstandings and intrigues - then it could actually have a happy ending during the Shrove Monday celebrations. But you also notice that the story should actually have a tragic end. But a happy ending also fits better with the colorful images of the film shot in Wiesbaden and Baden-Baden.

The lead actor Dietmar SCHÖNHERR (1926 - 2014) was able to establish himself as a long-standing member of the West German film industry with this film, without ever attracting international attention. Later, he and his Danish wife Vivi BACH would become a successful show host (WÜNSCH DIR WAS / JE LATER DER ABEND) on West German television.

The lead actress Ruth NIEHAUS (1925 - 1994) was of a completely different caliber. After her great performance in the very worthwhile local horror film ROSEN BLÜHEN AUF DEM HEIDEGRAB (1952), she played in the East-West thriller WEG OHNE UMKEHR (1953), which won the GOLDEN GLOBE in 1955. Even in German-speaking countries, Ruth NIEHAUS has been forgotten all too quickly, which is a great pity and should urgently be changed.
