At the 97th Academy Awards this past Sunday, Mikey Madison won Best Actress in a Leading Role for her eponymous role in Sean Baker's Anora. Anoratook home five other Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. It follows the titular character as she embarks on a whirlwind romance and eventual "fraud marriage" with the son of a Russian Oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn). In her victory speech, the 25-year-old Madison(who also made history by becoming the first Gen Z actor to win an Oscar) proudly thanked and honored the sex worker community.
While Anora and Mikey Madison's win is one of the most overt examples of the Oscars recognizing sex work in recent memory, it has happened more times than many people may realize. 14 different women have taken home Academy Awards for portraying sex workers. In fact, Emma Stone also won in 2024 for portraying Bella Baxter in Yorgos Lantimos' Poor Things.

The 2025 Academy Awards came and went in a whirlwind, forging legacies for a slew of talents, though it’s the newcomers who galvanize the most intrigue with their ties to the golden statuette. Amid the night’s fervor, one victory stood out — a triumph that spotlights both a fresh face and a storied trope.
Mikey Madison, the 25-year-old dynamo from Anora, seized her first Oscar for Best Actress, outpacing The Substance’s Demi Moore in a twist few had prognosticated. The win, flanked by Anora’s haul of Best Picture, Director, and more, incentivized a floodlight on her nascent Hollywood path.
Maddison’s raw and unapologetic portrayal of the titular sex worker elucidated a character far from cliché, cementing her ascent with a cataclysmic bang. That win didn’t transpire without etching new stats...

It seems a bit premature, but we wanted to have a place where we could begin tracking upcoming Netflix Originals expected to be hitting our screens in 2026. This is an extension to our 2025 movie and TV schedule, which we’ll continue to keep updated throughout 2025.
Important note: Given how far out we are from 2026, everything on this list is highly subject to change. We’ll keep it updated throughout 2025 and into 2026 with the latest confirmations of releases. As of right now, for most titles listed below, we’ve made assumptions based on filming schedules and/or if they’ve been excluded from the 2025 schedule. Of course, Netflix’s development slate is certainly much bigger than what this list implies, with likely well over 1,000 projects that have been announced or titles being worked on behind the scenes, although many will not see the light of day.

The visions are clear now. We see possible futures, all at once. Clickbait rumours about Dune: Messiah are all around us, and in so many futures they prevail. But we do see a way... there is a narrow way through. And, as is often the case, it appears that Deadline has found it. Per the trade's reporting, it's looking like cinema's very own Lisan al Gaib, Denis Villeneuve, is gearing up to start shooting Messiah — or Dune 3, if you prefer — this summer.
According to "multiple well-placed sources", Villeneuve and his team, who've been in pre-production on the sequel to Dune: Part Two for some time now, have been working hard to be in a position to get cameras rolling potentially as early as July. And while we haven't had any confirmed casting on the movie as of yet, a mid-to-late summer shoot could work well for the trilogy capper's expected key players.

James Deanis one of the single most iconic movie stars of all time, as he launched his career at the height of the “Golden Age of Hollywood” by adopting a “rebel” persona that was quite attractive to younger viewers, who felt like they had an idol that represented them on screen. Dean only ever starred in three films, but Rebel Without A Cause, East of Eden, and Giant were hailed as instant classics and are still met with praise today for their tremendous influence. Despite the fact that Dean’s life was cut short by a car accident, he’s still remembered as being one of the key figures in cinema’s evolution in the 1950s. An attempt to tell his life story may have gone awry, but Lifeunpacks the legacy of Dean by showing his relationship with the iconic photographer Dennis Stock, who is played in a standout performance by Robert Pattinson.

At 15, Nicolas Cage got his first job at Fairfax Cinema on Beverly, and the actor couldn’t have been more thrilled about it. While his job boiled down to selling popcorn and tickets, Cage would often stand in the back of the theater and dream about making his transition to the big screen.

A great 1945 war movie called The Story of G.I. Joe led to Robert Mitchum's only Oscar nomination even though the celebrated actor deserved at least one more. Mitchum has starred in some of the best film noirs of all time, such as The Big Sleep (1978), Cape Fear (1962), and The Night of the Hunter (1955). Mitchum was so exceptional in his prime that Roger Ebert called him his favorite movie star. Despite his acclaim, Mitchum was only nominated for one Oscar in his career for 1945's The Story of G.I. Joe.
Mitchum's acting career left a legacy as a classic figure in both film noir movies and Westerns. He starred alongside John Wayne in the Western drama El Dorado (1966) and in the classic war film The Longest Day (1962). He first rose to prominence in 1944's Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo alongside Spencer Tracey and Van Johnson. Because of his overwhelming influence on...

Florence Pugh is reflecting on why it’s “exhausting” being a woman in the industry.
During an interview with The Times published on Sunday, the We Live in Time star candidly discussed how women in Hollywood are treated and why she’s always vowed to go against the norm.
“I’m not nasty — I hope people think I’m kind. But there are fine lines women have to stay within, otherwise they are called a diva, demanding, problematic,” Pugh said. “And I don’t want to fit into stereotypes made by others. It is really exhausting for a young woman to just be in this industry, and actually other industries. But I’ve always been encouraged to have a voice.”
Already having been in the industry for 10 years, Pugh recalled seeing the headlines about Keira Knightley early on and how easily women could be ridiculed on their looks.

While some actors have gone out on a high note with extremely memorable final films, there are other performers whose final roles may surprise viewers. Whether they passed away or retired, it’s always sad to say goodbye to icons of Hollywood, although sometimes their final roles were overshadowed by other work in their acclaimed careers. In some cases, a late-career performance was so popular that many viewers wrongly think it was their final swansong, or other times, a lackluster final movie tarnished an actor's legacy so much that it was best just forgotten about entirely.
Even though some of these actors’ final movies weren’t their most memorable or acclaimed, it’s important to note that a great Hollywood career is based on the cumulative works of a performer, and no actor should be judged on their last performance alone. With this in mind, it’s also essential to...

For a brief period, over 1982-86, the U.K. enjoyed a remarkable film renaissance. Four films – “Chariots of Fire,” (1982) “Gandhi,” (1983) “The Killing Fields” (1985) and “The Mission” (1986) – won a total 19 Academy Awards, including Best Picture two years running. All of those films, save “Gandhi,” were produced by David Puttnam.
To this day, few figures are more associated with a national film revival. “The British are coming,” “The Chariots of Fire” screenwriter Colin Welland famously said in his Oscar speech. The main Brit Hollywood had on their radar was Puttnam. He was appointed CEO of Columbia Pictures in 1986, becoming the first and only foreigner ever, he notes, to serve on the board of the MPA.
Knighted in 1995, Puttman ended his film career in 1997, at 56, when he was appointed a life peer. “When I finished ‘Memphis Belle,’ I kind of knew that I was never going to make better films than the ones I’d already produced,...

Two years ago, we brought you the news that Florence Pugh had signed on to star in a new adaptation of East Of Eden, John Steinbeck's 1952 literary epic. In the time since the project — a seven-part Netflix limited series written by Zoe Kazan (The Big Sick) — was first announced, Christopher Abbott has joined the show's cast and Pugh's star has continued to rise with winning turns in the likes of The Wonder, Oppenheimer, and Dune: Part Two. And now we're getting an exciting new casting announcement for the series as Netflix has officially greenlit the project. Per Deadline's reporting, Challengers star Mike Faist has joined the ensemble, and whilst earlier indications suggested he will be playing Cal Trask, the part James Dean famously played in Elia Kazan's 1955 movie, it looks instead like he'll be playing the novel's Cain figure, Charles, instead.

A new movie is in development that will take an in-depth look at a hidden chapter from iconic actor James Dean’s life. The biopic, tentatively called “Surviving James Dean,” focuses on Dean’s college years and his previously undisclosed romantic involvement with his male roommate.
The film is based on the 2006 memoir “Surviving James Dean” by William Bast. According to the book, Bast and Dean met as 19-year-olds attending the University of California, Los Angeles’ theater program. They developed a close friendship that eventually turned romantic. Guy Guido acquired the rights to Bast’s story and plans to both write and direct the upcoming movie.
Guido has enjoyed Dean’s acting and has studied his life for over 20 years. He saw value in exploring Dean and Bast’s relationship, which Hollywood had tried to cover up. The biopic will depict how their romance evolved from their freshman year of...

A new biopic about James Dean is now in development. Dean was an actor who had a short but notable career in the 1950s. During this short-lived career, he starred in films such as East of Eden and Rebel Without A Cause. The actor was extremely popular for a short time in this era, but his career abruptly ended when he tragically passed away in a car crash in 1955. He was only 24 years old.
Now, The Hollywood Reporter has announced that a James Dean biopic is in the works. The biopic will explore Dean's personal life, documenting a time when he was in college. The film will be based on the 2006 memoir Surviving James Dean by William Bast, wherein Bast chronicles his close friendship and later romantic relationship with the famous actor. The rights for Bast's memoir have been acquired by writer-director Guy Guido, who will work on the film.

A James Dean renaissance is happening this year. Following the news that Netflix is working on a series adaptation of one of Dean's most famous films, East of Eden, a movie about the iconic actor is also in the works. Contrary to the James Franco film of the same name, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the film will be a bit more personal. It will explore the alleged love story between Dean and William Bast, who claimed in his 2006 memoir that he had a romantic relationship with the actor. The movie is titled Surviving James Dean, just like the memoir. Guy Guido wrote the script after acquiring the rights to the book.

Late actor James Dean has been one of the most noted pop culture icons in Hollywood history. The actor was known for his roles in Rebel Without A Cause, Giant, and East of Eden, two of which were released posthumously. The actor became a symbol of rebellion and masculinity for a whole new generation after his untimely death at the age of 24.
One of the biggest mysteries surrounding Dean was his sexuality. Many have speculated that he was gay or even bisexual. Several biographers have made the claim, including some claiming that he and Marlon Brando had a s*xual relationship. However, one statement from an old interview with Dean can put all the rumors to rest.

The moniker of 'icon' is bandied about pretty readily in Hollywood these days, but when it comes to James Dean, the star of Giant, East Of Eden, and Rebel Without A Cause who tragically died at just 24 years of age in 1955, it's one that's well deserved. And as our cultural fascination with the actor continues to endure, so too do new works based on his life. Now, per THR's reporting, it looks like the latest is set to be Surviving James Dean, a movie from writer-director Guy Guido based on William Bast's eponymous 2006 memoir.
Bast's second book about Dean having already been his close friend's first biographer way back in 1956, Surviving James Dean offers a more personal insight into the duo's relationship. As you may or may not have noticed, Florence Pugh took a breather from acting this summer, a rare break for the self-described “work maniac.”
In an interview with British Vogue, the costar (with Andrew Garfield) of the soon-to-be-released romance-drama We Live In Time said she took a break from acting recently for the first time in a career that goes back to 2014’s The Falling and more recently included roles in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two.
The time-out marked the “first time ever in my career when I’ve actually asked for a summer break”, she tells the magazine. “I’m an absolute work maniac, [but] I can see I’m exhausted.”
Since 2023, Pugh has had on-screen or voice roles in The Trident, A Good Person, Human Resources, Oppenheimer, The Boy and the Heron, Dune: Part Two and We Live in Time. She’ll...

Netflix's East of Eden adaptation can fix the original film's main problem. The 1955 film adapted John Steinbeck's classic novel of the same name, with James Dean in the role of Caleb "Cal" Trask, for which he received a posthumous Academy Award nomination. Its story explores the Trask and Hamilton families over the course of multiple generations in an epic tale that serves as a retelling of the biblical story of Cain and Abel and as an exploration of the American Dream and free will.
In addition to Dean's posthumous nomination, Elia Kazan received an Academy Award nomination for Best Director and Jo Van Fleet, who played Cathy Ames, won for Best Supporting Actress. With that, there's a lot of expectation for its modern retelling. East of Eden is now being adapted as a Netflix limited series starring Florence Pugh as Cathy, while Poor Things star Christopher Abbott is...

A new limited series exploring the JonBenét Ramsey case is in the works at Paramount+, and will star Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen.
The JonBenét Ramsey case is one that has haunted Americans for nearly three decades. The six-year-old beauty queen was found dead in the family’s basement only hours after she had been reported missing, but the case has remained unsolved.
There have been quite a few documentaries on the subject, but Paramount+ has now landed the rights to the first fictional look at the infamous cold case. According to Deadline, the series has been looking for a home since March and has now been confirmed to air on Paramount+.
Furthermore, Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen (picture above in Gemini Man) have been cast as JonBenét’s parents, Patsy and John Ramsey. The series is currently titled simply JonBenét Ramsey and production is set to begin soon in Canada.

A John Steinbeck novel and classic James Dean film, East Of Eden is set for a Netflix TV adaptation starring Florence Pugh and Christopher Abbot.
James Dean famously only made three films, one of them being a film adaptation of East Of Eden. The original novel was by John Steinbeck, that giant of American literature, and his transplanting of the Adam, Eve, Cain and Abel Biblical tale into a sprawling early 20th Century Californian epic remains a wonderful read.
The 1955 film was responsible for building James Dean’s status as a Hollywood legend, a status that would be forever confirmed by his death the same year, shortly before the release of Rebel Without A Cause. Steinbeck’s book covers a significantly longer period than the 1955 film, so much in fact that it would take a TV series to do it justice. Rejoice then, because that’s exactly what we’re getting.

Editor’s note: this list was originally published in May 2024. It has since been updated in honor of Father’s Day.
Every family relationship is fertile material for any film, but none have been pillaged quite as extensively as the father/son dynamic. Blame the patriarchy, perhaps, for centering the male experience far more extensively in fiction, resulting in films where daughters and mothers tend to fall by the wayside in favor of drama between the men of the family.
Still, filmmakers and their work respond to the imperfect culture we all live in, and the relationship between a father and son can act as a vehicle to explore powerful ideas on screen. Familial expectations, pressures to uphold legacies, and the emotional repression that often defines heterosexual male relationships inform many of cinema’s greatest father stories, which can frequently be boiled down to the (somewhat reductive) label of “daddy issue” dramas.

Nicolas Cage was born into Hollywood royalty as Nicolas Coppola, grandson of Frances Ford Coppola. To avoid nepotism (and on-set The Godfather quotes directed at him), he changed his surname to Cage after a beloved comic character, Luke Cage. Cage credits James Dean in East of Eden as a pivotal influence, solidifying his decision to become an actor. The young performer set out to forge his own path, and in 1986, he starred opposite Kathleen Turner in the oddball comedy Peggy Sue Got Married, followed by the Coen Brothers' cult classic Raising Arizona.

But then Cage completes his thought. “And then I thought, well, wouldn’t it be interesting if this little family nucleus was contending with...
