Is it "a madness to try to live on earth the total love"?

The film tales the birth, development and exhaustion of the "love dream" lived together by Franz Liszt and Marie d'Agoult, in spite of the social morals of their time and environment. Marie (Annie Ducaux), a rich Parisian young woman, bores herself nigh her prosaic husband (Louis Seigner) and "dreams of love". This comes to her under the person of Franz (Pierre Richard-Willm), a young virtuoso pianist whom she meets at the factory of Pierre Érard (André Varennes). They get involved in an intense sentimental relationship, under the complaisant look of George Sand (Mila Parély), and she gets ride of everything to flee with her musician and live plentifully their love dream. But she is going soon to discover that she has a very dangerous rival: the music itself. Her lover takes back his itinerant life throughout Europa, meeting glory as he gradually moves away from Marie. «As genius has more rights than love», «there is no more place for her in his glory.» But remains between them and for us the poetic music of their shared "Dreams of Love".
