The Academy Awards have celebrated the talents of the film industry for over 96 years, honoring outstanding performances and achievements. Many celebrities dream of winning an Oscar once they come into the Hollywood scene, and a lot of them do achieve it.
Some secure it at a very young age while others get the chance to hold the coveted trophy much later in their careers.
So, let’s look at some child prodigies and veterans who have achieved this incredible feat at an age that will leave you in shock.

Earning more than one Academy Award during a career is a surprising rarity for actors. Katharine Hepburn holds the record of four Oscars, while the rare feat of winning three rests with Jack Nicholson, Daniel Day-Lewis, Walter Brennan, Meryl Streep, Ingrid Bergman, and Frances McDormand. For filmmakers themselves, it is a bit of a different metric, as the ones behind the camera push all aspects of the production. A win for a film is often attributed, in part, to their work.
Steven Spielberg's work has been monumental in defining the modern face of cinema, and the success of his films at the Academy Awards reflects this unparalleled career over five decades, starting when Jaws became his first film to win an Oscar. Fifty years of excellence seem challenging to beat, yet one director's films won more Oscars within four decades: William Wyler. Let's compare the impressive records of the two cinema titans.

Everybody wants rom-coms to have a renaissance, but nobody seems to know how they should evolve to reflect the realities of the modern world. Few of the recent efforts to resurrect the form have been meaningfully successful, and most of those rare successes have used hot new stars to hide their reliance on dusty old tropes; no shade to the breezy appeal of “Anyone but You,” but no one would accuse that Shakespeare-inspired charmer of trying to move the genre forward.
The prevailing wisdom is that the unfettered wish fulfillment of movies like “Sleepless in Seattle” (or whatever) is a poor fit for the messiness of the digital age, even if it really had more to do with the fact that social media has made it hard to write a decent meet-cute, and the streaming boom gave Hollywood studios an excuse to stop trying. But wish fulfillment was always just...

For anyone who has ever swooned, laughed, or cried during a romcom, you’re in good company. And when you’re under the weather, there’s nothing quite like cosying up with one. A great romcom is chicken soup for the heart. The best of the genre brings a hope and optimism that everything’s going to be ok, even when the ending takes the bitter with the sweet.
In Falling in Love at the Movies: Rom-Coms from the Screwball Era to Today, a new volume from Turner Classic Movies (TCM), author and entertainment journalist Esther Zuckerman explores how the beloved genre has shaped cultural narratives and captured hearts at the box-office. The Oscars race for Best Actress was wholly reset at the Golden Globes when self-described "popcorn actress" Demi Moore (The Substance) prevailed and delivered a speech that was award-worthy in its own right. Suddenly, there was a new Oscar frontrunner. But then Mikey Madison (Anora) fought back at BAFTA, beating the odds to claim a come-from-behind victory. Let's break down this year's Best Actress category, which also includes their fellow nominees Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), and Fernanda Torres (I'm Still Here).

Charade is a film that almost defies categorization. It's part mystery, part suspense, part romantic comedy, and it's often mistakenly credited to one of Hollywood's most iconic directors: Alfred Hitchcock. But another Hollywood icon, Stanley Donen, led the film. It featured music by Henry Mancini and a title song with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. Anyone who's watched a Hitchcock film can see why it's often mistaken for one of his own. Its twists and turns and suspenseful style often mirror the horror front-runner's.
Following its release, the film garnered a handful of award nominations. It's leading cast members were also recognized for their performance with the same honor. Charade would mark a clear turning point in both Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn's acting careers. And it's...

The late humanitarian Audrey Hepburn starred in a number of motion picture hits in the 50s and 60s. Between My Fair Lady and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Hepburn solidified herself as a Hollywood household name. Hepburn is also known for the movie Roman Holiday starring opposite Gregory Peck, which came out in 1953. Now, Roman Holiday is coming to Paramount+ on February 1. The romcom follows Hepburn, a European princess who steals away to Rome tired of her life and all the pressures that come with it. The basic plot, timeless for a feel good rom com, with the trope being done again and again in movies and television over the last 70 years.

When 29-year-old Timothée Chalamet earned his second Oscar nomination for playing a young Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown,” he stepped into one of the most rarefied clubs in Academy Award history: Men who’ve received two leading actor nominations before they’ve turned 30.
As first noted by film journalist and historian Mark Harris on Bluesky, the last actor to achieve this feat was James Dean, who was posthumously nominated in back-to-back years for 1955’s period family drama “East of Eden” and 1956’s Western drama “Giant” after he died in a car accident at 24. Prior to Dean, the only other man to earn two nominations in the leading category in their 20s was Mickey Rooney, who was nominated for best actor at 19 for the 1939 Busby Berkeley musical “Babes in Arms,” and then again four years later at 23 for “The Human Comedy”.

Gossip Girl is one of the most iconic TV series from the 2000s. CW's take on the complicated socio-politics of the Upper East Side, the show follows Serena Van der Woodsen, a problematic girl who comes back to New York and inadvertently disrupts the lives of her family and group of friends.
What makes Gossip Girl such an outstanding TV series, even nowadays, is how it perfectly balances comedy, drama, and romance in a show with great visuals and amazing fashion. Mikey Madison has the potential to make history at the 2025 Oscars in Best Actress with Neon’s “Anora.” At the age of 25, she is receiving universal praise for her portrayal of the title character, a Brooklyn stripper who gets into a whirlwind, impetuous marriage. Sean Baker‘s wild romantic dramedy is continuing to gain massive buzz since winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and Madison is currently headlined at the top of the combined odds at Gold Derby to win Best Actress. Should it occur, she would be the ninth youngest Best Actress Oscar winner and the first since over a decade ago.

Before it became an Oscar-winning movie, My Fair Lady was a Broadway stage musical starring a young Julie Andrews. However, if Andrews had played Eliza Doolittle on screen, she might not have had the opportunity to take on one of her most iconic roles: Mary Poppins. When the musical was adapted into a movie, Andrews was passed over for the lead in favor of movie star Audrey Hepburn, even though Hepburns singing voice was dubbed over.
In the same year as her My Fair Lady disappointment, Walt Disney offered Andrews the chance to lead the cast of Mary Poppins, his upcoming musical project. My Fair Lady and Mary Poppins were both huge hits in 1964, competing against each other in major Oscar categories, although not Best Actress. Over time, Mary Poppins garnered a more lasting impact on pop culture, remaining one of Julie Andrews' best movies from her incredible career that would go on for decades.

Out of all the late John Waynes movies, Blood Alley is one of the least discussed in his filmography, barring some titles that are known as lost Wayne movies and his Dirty Harry "rip-offs." However, Blood Alley differs from many of these films, as it is not one of the many acclaimed Western movies Wayne starred in. Set during the Cold War, the movie depicts a voyage from Chiku Shan to Hong Kong via the Formosa Strait. Wayne was cast to play Captain Tom Wilder, but another actor was meant to star in the lead role.
Robert Mitchum was supposed to play Captain Tom Wilder in Blood Alley before he was fired from the movie at the request of director William A. Wellman. Romance movies are defined by their central couples, and when the actors' chemistry is believable, it elevates the project to a new level. While tension and physical chemistry are a huge part of what makes these dynamics work, there must be an underlying sense of friendship and a shared sense of humor that drives their banter and scenes together. In most cases, this kind of palpable attraction can't be faked and is something that two actors either have or don't. However, this gravitational pull between characters is helped by well-crafted writing and direction and a magnetic atmosphere in the film.
Movie couples with the worst chemistry can easily sour the film and make it difficult to watch for audiences. If two actors clearly don't like each other or simply don't seem attracted to each other, then the audience will have trouble becoming invested in their love story. This is why...

From the mid-1950s through the early 1970s, many lavish Broadway musicals were successfully adapted to film, from “The King and I” to “West Side Story” to “Cabaret.” One of the most successful and enduring of all time premiered on October 21, 1964, when “My Fair Lady” hit the theaters after much anticipation, drawing people to the box office in droves despite its lengthy near-three-hour run time. Read on for more about the “My Fair Lady” 60th anniversary.
The origin of “My Fair Lady” dates back farther than the 1956 Tony-winning play. Music collaborators Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe were inspired by George Bernard Shaw’s 1913 play “Pygmalion,” the tale of Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle who takes speech lessons from Professor Henry Higgins in order to pass as a “proper lady.” The two men thought it would be “loverly” to turn the story into a musical, and wrote the book for “My Fair Lady,...

“Lonely Planet” is a movie starring Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth. It is written and directed by Susannah Grant.
Romantic comedies set in exotic locations are a bit like holiday celebrations: they all share a similar structure with minor variations, yet somehow, year after year, they manage to keep us coming back for more. We find ourselves repeatedly indulging in the same familiar formula, film after film.
“Lonely Planet” fits this mold perfectly. It’s one of those movies that, due to its repetitive nature, won’t linger in our memories much beyond the viewing experience. It’s entirely formulaic, adhering faithfully to the conventions of the genre, featuring two well-known actors in a picturesque setting.
Let’s be honest: this formula has been repeated so many times that it has been refined to the point where it’s almost impossible to say anything new about it.
The plot transports us to a writers’ retreat,...

Known for her natural grace and elegant beauty, Audrey Hepburn was a fixture of many notable films throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Winning an Academy Award for Roman Holiday and starring opposite Henry Fonda and future husband Mel Ferrer in War and Peace, Audrey Hepburn established herself early on as the epitome of glamour and sophistication. In 1957, Hepburn was paired with the legendary Fred Astaire in Funny Face, a film that combined upbeat musical numbers and bold colors with a clever satire of the fashion industry.
While Funny Face is whimsical and pairs one of Hollywood's up-and-coming stars with a legendary leading man known for his roles alongside Ginger Rogers, there's also a substantial amount of depth. Funny Face, as was the case with many films of the Technicolor era, served as a focal point for current trends in fashion but also broke from the typical ways in which women...

A flighty caper is pinned down by the chemistry between its legendary leads: Hepburn has arguably never been funnier, with Grant in his silver fox era
Equal parts romcom, spy film and Givenchy showcase, Charade has remained one of cinema’s frothiest romantic thrillers for more than 60 years.
At its centre is a luminous Audrey Hepburn, cast against her typical onscreen persona in her first suspense film (though still draped in lavish custom outfits). No longer the wide-eyed ingenue introduced Roman Holiday (1953) and Sabrina (1954), she plays Regina “Reggie” Lambert, a jaded woman looking to end her loveless marriage – until her husband suddenly turns up dead, having taken a coveted $250,000 fortune (inflation!) to his grave. Reggie soon finds herself pursued across Paris by a gang of scenery-chewing ex-cronies, as well as Cary Grant’s Peter Joshua, a silver fox who offers a sturdy shoulder to cry on (and his own covert...

Lots of things make Ridley Scott grumpy. Critics of "Blade Runner" make him grumpy. All of those millennials not watching "The Last Duel" make him grumpy. The idea of making "wizard films" for Disney makes him grumpy. The world seems like one big inconvenience to the octogenarian, to the extent that it's not really accurate to say these things make him grumpy. Much like Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner in "The Avengers," the secret to Scott's remarkably durable crotchetiness is that he's always grumpy.
None of this, of course, takes away from the man's equally remarkable filmography. While there are several dubious entries on that list, anyone who made "Blade Runner" is, in my opinion, unimpeachably brilliant. Still, I implore you to take a quick peek at Scott's Wikipedia page and marvel at the sheer level of irascibility emanating from his photo in what is surely the most accurate visual...

Actor Gregory Peck would become one of Hollywood's most recognizable faces, turning out iconic performances in cinema from the 1940s to the 1970s. From his role as Atticus Finch in Robin Mulligan's To Kill a Mocking Bird to his role as Joe Bradley across from Aubrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday, it isn't easy to pick the best or definitive role of Gregory Peck. However, there was one movie that the actor regretted deeply, being rushed into the role in a film he never wanted any part in.
We will examine Only The Valiant, the 1951 Western, how Peck came to the project, and why he regretted it. We will also see if it is as...

It's odd to think of stars like Audrey Hepburn within a modern context. The Egot winner seems to belong so perfectly to a bygone era of Hollywood — one characterized by a kind of romanticism and graceful dignity that just doesn't map on to the age of streaming and ubiquitous "content." Of course, in reality the Hollywood of the mid-20th century was often anything but a halcyon dream, with the star system still very much in operation, shackling actors to their respective studios to be traded off and sold like commodities. Still, it's just plain weird to think about these titans of Hollywood in the context of, for instance, Rotten Tomatoes — the great arbiter of our contemporary collective taste in cinema.
Imagine, if you will, the career of this Unicef Goodwill Ambassador, fashion icon, and legendary starlet summed up in a list of cartoon splats and tomatoes. It doesn't feel quite right does it?...

The Judge, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall, subtly references Duvall's feature film debut in To Kill A Mockingbird. Both The Judge and To Kill A Mockingbird share themes of corruption and murder, creating ethical dilemmas for the characters. Despite mixed reviews, The Judge gained popularity on Netflix for its powerful legal drama and strong cast performances.

Every decade has had its share of notable movies, but when it comes to the 1950s, there were countless films that were not only popular, but changed Hollywood as audiences knew it. The 1950s offered up movies from various different genres that were trailblazers for the films that came after them, creating new trends and tropes that have still persisted today. But most of all, the 1950s movie scene left audiences with a handful of incredible actors and directors that have remained as some of the most influential and iconic figures of Hollywood to this day.
Due to the volume of movies released in the ten years that made up the 1950s, it isn't always easy picking the films that defined the decade. For the most part, these films were chosen based on their lasting legacy and what they brought to the movie scene upon their release. If they introduced a new iconic actor,...

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains some spoilers for “The First Omen.”]
In the final act of Richard Donner’s iconic 1976 horror feature “The Omen,” star Gregory Peck — driven almost mad by the realization this his adopted son Damien is probably the Antichrist — heads to the Italian cemetery where Damien’s cursed biological mother is said to be buried. When he cracks open her grave, he’s not entirely surprised to find, not the skeleton of a young woman, but of a large jackal. After all, he’s already been told Damien is the product of a satanic breeding ritual between the devil himself and a willing female jackal.
What Arkasha Stevenson’s prequel feature “The First Omen” presupposes is: What if Damien’s mother wasn’t actually a jackal? In the pantheon of horror classic remakes and reimaginings — like “Halloween” and “The Exorcist,” to name some recent offerings — it’s a hell of a starting point. A smart one,...

Best Picture win eludes most exceptional comedies despite thoughtful themes and exceptional performances. Great directors like Kubrick and Chaplin lost out on Oscars for their comedy masterpieces. Comedies like Tootsie and Juno tackle deep themes but fall short of Best Picture wins.
It’s extremely rare for a comedy to take home the elusive Best Picture prize at the Academy Awards, although over the years there have been plenty of great comedies among the nominations. While there have been some exceptions, like when Annie Hall won Best Picture over Star Wars in 1977, for the most part, great comedies were beaten out by movies that were considered more serious and deserving than their light-hearted laugh-filled counterparts. Despite truly exceptional comedies always having something insightful and interesting to say, this has not always resulted in awards and accolades.

Case in point: O’Brian signed on to our Zoom interview a full five minutes early this week (practically unheard of!), and offered to spend our extra time “just chatting.” And O’Brian, whose pre-acting resumes includes everything from bodybuilding to a seven-year stint as a police officer in her native Indiana, is a very good conversationalist.

When reflecting on Gregory Peck's extensive career, a few films like Roman Holiday come instantly to mind. The biblical epic David and Bathsheba, the swashbuckling Moby Dick, both versions of Cape Fear, and the iconic horror film The Omen all made their mark in movie history. He's also played villains such as Nazi scientist Dr. Josef Mengele in The Boys in Brazil, and heroes like Catholic priest Hugh O'Flaherty in The Scarlet and The Black. Of course, his most famous role comes from the 1962 feature film adaptation of Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird, where he wowed audiences everywhere as Atticus Finch. His powerful performance has since been hailed as one of the greatest in cinema, and for good reason. In every way, Peck transforms himself into the physical embodiment of the ideals that Finch stood for, ripping the character straight from Lee's page and immortalizing him on screen.

Audrey Hepburn is the absolute definition of classic Hollywood. The star of beloved films such as "Roman Holiday" and the criminally underseen "Wait Until Dark," she became the embodiment of the term movie star for decades until her passing in 1993. Perhaps no single movie embodies the greatness of Hepburn more than 1961's "Breakfast at Tiffany's." Based on Truman Capote's novel of the same name, director Blake Edwards helped turn Hepburn's Holly Golightly into a cinematic icon. Yet, amazingly enough, it's a role that Hepburn very nearly passed on.
Speaking to The New York Times in 1960, the actress discussed her role as a New York City socialite who was looking to marry a rich man only to find herself smitten by a writer. In the interview, Hepburn, who was coming off of "The Nun's Story" and "The Unforgiven," explained that she didn't believe she was right for the part. It...

Although he has personally competed for the Best Picture Oscar as a qualifying producer of just four films, Martin Scorsese is responsible for directing 10 of the top Academy Award category’s nominees, including 2024 contender “Killers of the Flower Moon.” This recent improvement upon his total makes him only the third filmmaker in Oscars history to helm a double-digit amount of Best Picture nominees. There are films you watched every time they pop up on TCM or streaming services. It’s like visiting an old friend. These movies put a smile on your face and a song in your heart. And one such film is “Charade,” which celebrates its 60th anniversary on Dec. 5. Deftly directed by Stanley Donen from a fun and thrilling Peter Stone screenplay, “Charade” stars Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn who exude a William Powell/Myrna Loy style chemistry that leaps off the screen. And let’s not forget that gorgeous Henry Mancini score, the romantic Oscar-nominated title tune “Charade,” with lyrics by Johnny Mercer and the pulsating Saul Bass title sequence.
I saw “Charade” when it was released, and I’ve probably seen it at least 15 more times. And each time seems like the first. Not many films have that kind of power. A 2010 Criterion Collection article by film historian...

Audrey Hepburn's underrated films showcase her true talent and range beyond her most famous roles. Hepburn's performances in these films, such as "Wait Until Dark" and "How To Steal A Million," demonstrate her ability to go from comedy to drama easily. Hepburn's last leading role in "They All Laughed" may not have been commercially successful, but it is enjoyed for its dialogue and charm.
Audrey Hepburn, with a film career spanning 41 years, is recognizable to most audiences for her iconic role in Breakfast at Tiffany's, but her contribution to cinema includes other films worth spotlighting. Hepburn, a notable actress of Old Hollywood, is most often seen in roles portraying women with class and sophistication. Through her films and personal life, Audrey Hepburn was known to be highly fashionable, which can be noticed in how elegant most of her characters were.

If you ask people what their favorite movie endings are, they will most likely tell you an ending that has some sort of big twist, a big set piece, or a major display of emotional catharsis, be it the two lovers deciding to be together or them opting for a painful, tear-filled goodbye. However, sometimes it is the quietest endings that can be the most impactful, where restraint is the only way to properly convey what the filmmaker wants to get across. One of my favorite endings of all time — William Wyler's "Roman Holiday" — uses this tactic to perfection. It sets up with nearly two hours of a buoyant, lovely romance between Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck, and in the final scene, their separation cannot be addressed in the public forum in which it is set, meaning their bittersweet parting can only de done through glances and innuendo.
