One of gems right after WW2

The story is enriched with a multilayered web of human relationships, featuring Atsuko (played by Hideko Takamine), Kaji and Niheita (Ryo Ikebe), Ken-chan and his dog Peke, a mother named Kayo (Kuniko Miyake), who works as a maid in a detached inn in Hakone, and a housekeeper (Kumeko Urabe) who guards a mansion with a war-damaged ceiling. The depiction of female factory workers making dolls for the American market under harsh conditions and low wages further reflects the social realities of the time, resulting in a profound and high-quality work.

The simple yet compelling message that sincerity in both work and relationships with children and pets leads to happiness resonates even more powerfully in this era, where material abundance is taken for granted.

Ryo Ikebe stands out with his portrayal of a "useless employee" who still exudes an unpretentious charm and quiet integrity.
