Barbara Stanwyck, Joel McCrea, Lynne Overman, Robert Preston, and Akim Tamiroff in Pacific Express (1939)

Union Pacific

Cecil B. DeMille delivers a satisfying western epic starring Barbara Stanwyck, Joel McCrea, Robert Preston, Brian Donlevy & Akim Tamiroff; the story of the building of a railroad is historically bogus but highly entertaining and action-filled. Joel McCrea is our favorite ethical frontier lawman; here he’s a troubleshooter keeping crooks, Indians and proto-Bolsheviks from delaying construction. The huge cast includes scores of favorite supporting actors — although the screen is so busy some of them will be hard to spot.

Review: Cecil B. Demille's "Union Pacific" (1939) Starring Joel McCrea, Barbara Stanwyck And Robert Preston; Kino Lorber Blu-ray Release
Image
By Fred Blosser

In “Union Pacific” (1939), an epic Western produced and directed by Cecil B. DeMille for Paramount Pictures in flavorful black-and-white, Union Army veteran Jeff Butler (Joel McCrea) is hired as a troubleshooter by the fledgling Union Pacific Railroad just after the end of the Civil War. In the 2021 corporate world, his job description probably would say “Head of Security.” Butler is an engineer by profession, but he’s traded his slide rule (or whatever engineers used in those days) for a pair of six-shooters. The Union Pacific is laying track westward from Nebraska to connect in Utah with the Central Pacific, as the latter proceeds eastward from California. Jeff’s duty is to make sure the Union Pacific stays on schedule, and that means no malingering or sabotage by the track crew. If the Union Pacific falls behind, the Central Pacific becomes top dog.

Jeff’s main problem...

In today’s film news roundup, “Bombshell” writer Charles Randolph and production designers William J. Creber and Roland Anderson are set for honors and Abrams Agency opens a London office.

Award Winners

Charles Randolph has been named the recipient of the Writers Guild of America West’s 2020 Paul Selvin Award in recognition of his script for “Bombshell.”

Randolph will be honored at the 2020 Writers Guild Awards West Coast ceremony on Feb. 1 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The Wgaw is proud to honor him for this outstanding script.”

“Bombshell” recaps the sexual harassment scandals at Fox News that led to the departure of Roger Ailes.

Star Wars Opening Crawl Creator Thinks Rogue One Made a Big Mistake
Anthony Daniels, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, James Earl Jones, David Prowse, and Kenny Baker in Star Wars: Épisode IV - Un nouvel espoir (1977)
While Disney and LucasFilm's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story couldn't break Star Wars: The Force Awakens' opening weekend box office record, it did make history in a few other ways. For one, this is the first live-action Star Wars movie since 1984's The Ewok Adventure and 1985's Ewok: The Battle for Endor that doesn't feature a score by John Williams, with Michael Giacchino taking over the composing duties on Rogue One. And it is also the first Star Wars movie since those Ewok spin-offs that doesn't begin with the iconic opening crawl, which immediately transports viewers to "a galaxy far, far away." In fairness, the theatrical Star Wars: Clone Wars movie also ditched some of these elements. But it's important here, because it sets a precedence for the new Star Wars standalone movies moving forward. Instead of an opening crawl, director Gareth Edwards opted for an opening prologue,...

Team Top Ten: The Best Cannes Winners of All Time
Amir here, to bring you this month’s edition of Team Top Ten, a monthly poll by all of our contributing team at The Film Experience. Cinephiles all around the world turn their attention to the south of France in May as the most prestigious film festival in the world gets underway in Cannes.

The festival’s history is a rich one, full of interesting cinematic and political narratives. It’s an event that has celebrated the best in cinema and operated as a launching pad for emerging artists as much as it has played games of politics and festival world favouritism. Still, when all is said and done, the list of Palme d’Or winners can rival any list of the best films ever made.

With this year’s edition of the festival just about to begin, we thought it would be a good time to revisit the past...

20. Easy Rider (1969)

Written by Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda, and Terry Southern

They’ll talk to ya and talk to ya and talk to ya about individual freedom. But they see a free individual, it’s gonna scare ‘em.

This portion’s “anybody can write a film” segment comes from 1969, with a landmark film that truly doesn’t have much weight. A road movie if there ever was one, Easy Rider follows Wyatt (Peter Fonda) and Billy (Dennis Hopper) as they ride their motorcycles across the country to New Orleans for Mardi Gras.

America's love affair with the locomotive continues as AMC renews Hell On Wheels for another season
In an attempt to remind viewers that it still has original programming other than Mad Men and The Walking Dead (though one of those is on the way out soon), AMC has announced that it will be giving the railroad drama Hell On Wheels a fourth season. Deadline Hollywood reports that the upcoming season will bump up to 13 episodes—instead of the show’s usual 10—which will give the Union Pacific cowboys working on the Transcontinental Railroad three extra hours to realize that trains are a bit old-fashioned and that everyone should be driving cars by now. And Bohannon screwing over Thomas Durant (Colm Meaney), who files an injunction against the Union Pacific in this week’s episode of Hell on Wheels? It’s what the fans want.

'Hell on Wheels' Anson Mount thinks series is 'probably going to end one of two ways'
During a break in production on AMC's Saturday Western drama "Hell on Wheels," star Anson Mount has left behind the plains of Calgary, Alberta, where rain and massive flooding caused the entire show to be shut down a week before its scheduled hiatus in June.

On this July day, Mount spends his time off helping a friend build a cabin in the woods in the southern Catskills of upstate New York.

"We're soaking wet here," he tells Zap2it. "We're drilling holes in very wet wood, securing these deck braces, so it's not too bad. Where it needs to be dry is inside, and we've already got the roof on."

"Hell on Wheels" premiered its third season on Aug. 10, when it moved to its new Saturday time slot, which, as pointed out by Joel Stillerman, AMC's head of original programming, "has been the home of our Westerns very successfully for many years.

'Hell on Wheels' Common: 'Elam wants a home and a happy life'
Zap2it: This season, your character, Elam Ferguson -- a former slave now working for the Union Pacific, building the Transcontinental Railroad -- has reunited with his love, former Indian captive and prostitute Eva (Robin McLeavy), who may or may not be carrying his baby. What's it been like to play that?

Common: It's a strong [relationship], and it's a conflicted one. It's one that outside circumstances can affect; it's one that inner demons can affect. Obviously she was pregnant at the end of last season, so coming into this season and seeing when the baby arrives -- those things are part of his arc and challenges. It's really just building that home that he wants, just to have a home and live a happy life.

Zap2it: It seems that whatever fate or the railroad throws their way, they just can't quit each other. Why is that?

Common: They can't.

Anson Mount Talks Hell On Wheels Season 3, Shooting by Himself in a Blizzard, and Return of the Swede
Season 3 of the AMC drama series Hell on Wheels finds Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) leaving his vengeance-seeking ways behind and investing in the new American landscape. It is now 1867, the third year of the building of the transcontinental railroad, and Bohannon must not only contend with racism, greed and murder, as he leads the Union Pacific in its race across the country against the Central Pacific, but he now also has his former employer, Thomas “Doc” Durant (Colm Meaney), actively working to defeat him. During this recent exclusive interview with Collider, I sat down with actor Anson Mount, who is always insightful about his character and the show, to talk about how different things feel in Season 3, what it was like to shoot by himself in a blizzard, what’s motivating Cullen Bohannon now, what it’s like to be at odds with Durant this season, what role the Mormons will play,...

Hell on Wheels Season 3 Preview: A New War to Wage
Following the murder of Lily Bell in the season finale of Hell on Wheels, it's a safe bet that Cullen Bohannon will be all about revenge and/or spiraling out of control when we see him again on tonight's Hell on Wheels Season 3 premiere, right?

Not exactly.

While Cullen is deeply affected by the death of his love, star Anson Mount and new showrunner John Wirth sat down with me recently to for a preview of what to expect when the new season kicks off and, for Wirth, how he's handled taking over the job of after John Shiban departed the series at the end of last year...

-------------------------------------------

TV Fanatic: John, with you coming to take the reins, will we see a difference in season three?

John Wirth: I think we're taking the show in a slightly different direction, starting with putting Cullen Bohannon at the helm of the railroad.

'Hell on Wheels' Season 3: Watch Cullen and Elam take a beating, er, meeting
AMC's "Hell on Wheels" is shifting gears somewhat as it heads into its third season, but some things will remain the same. Cullen Bohannon and Elam Ferguson, for instance, would just as soon punch each other as say hello.

That's pretty much what happens in this clip -- which is exclusively on Zap2it -- from Saturday's (Aug. 10) season premiere. Cullen (Anson Mount) has scarcely stepped into a room before Elam (Common) greets him with a right hand to the face. Cullen responds in kind, and were it not for a knock on the door, who knows how much damage they would have done to one another?

About the Season 3 changes: "Hell on Wheels" has done away with the revenge story that drove its first two seasons and picks up with Cullen having become the chief engineer for Union Pacific as it races to build the transcontinental railroad. Elam is...

'Big Brother' contestant investigated after child porn comments
It’s not like Big Brother contestants are typically known for their contributions to society, but the season 15 cast has set the moral bar at an all-time low. (Is there a basement in the Bb house? Because the bar is buried beneath that.) Following a season of offhand racist and homophobic remarks, the latest attempt at a “joke” is Spencer Clawson’s riff on child porn.

While fellow contestant McCrae was in the shower, Spencer grabbed his microphone and, in an apparent attempt to make his housemate look bad, said into the mic, “I like to beat off to child porn.

The Next 'Big Brother' Controversy
Big Brother (2000)
"Big Brother" Season 15 contestant Spencer Clawson has traded in the hate speech for joking about child porn.

His comments, which seemingly were in jest, were captured on the "Big Brother" live feed on Monday, August 5. While fellow houseguest McCrae Olson was in the shower, it looked like Spencer took his microphone and said the following directly into it.

"I like to b*** off to child porn. Did I ever tell y'all about that?" he asked Andy Herren and Amanda Zuckerman. "Oh, I love it. B***ing off to child porn is my favorite thing there is. I love it when they're around 3 or 4 years old. My favorite ones are when you can tell they're filming in a basement somewhere in Minnesota."

This isn't the first time Spencer's comments have caused some controversy. He previously used gay slurs and praised Hitler's speaking abilities, according to Reality Blurred.

Spencer's employer...

Towards A Pure Fiction: Cecil B. DeMille
Like Night of the Hunter, Tod Browning’s Freaks or Leonard Kastle’s The Honeymoon Killers, The Road to Yesterday can be ranked among the UFOs of cinema. It’s place in the heart of Cecil B. DeMille’s work proves to be in itself very distinctive. We know that, during his entire life, DeMille had virtually only one producer—Paramount (the former Famous Players Lasky)—just like Minnelli was MGM’s man and Corman American International’s. Sixty-three of his films (out of seventy) were produced at Paramount. And, oddly enough, it is among the seven outsiders, situated within a brief period from 1925 to 1931, that his best activity is to be found (I’m thinking of Madam Satan, The Godless Girl, and The Road to Yesterday)–his most audacious undertakings. To top it off, for this uncontested king of the box office, his best films were his biggest commercial failures.

Portland, Ore. — Looking like punk gladiators, teams of young adults on junk bikes pulling chariots made of junk parts frenetically chased each other around a makeshift arena, slamming each other and swinging away with foam clubs.

Spectators tossed beer cans, flour and smoke grenades. Firecrackers popped and obscenities flew during the battle, called the "Ben Hurt Chariot Wars."

And then, toward sundown, the grown-ups arrived. Seven police cars pulled up and told all 400 or so people they had to leave because they were trespassing on railroad property. They complied. But the contest was over anyway.

Victors had already emerged: Jon Penfold and his teammate Nick Schlabach. Falls, collisions and smashed wheels eliminated the other teams. Penfold's and Schlabach's chariot, armored with a bubble-shaped metallic cage, was the last one still able to maneuver.

"You attack, and then run. Attack, and then run," said Penfold, 29. "It's a war of attrition."

HitFix Interview: Christopher Heyerdahl talks 'Hell on Wheels' and 'Breaking Dawn'
Anson Mount in Hell on Wheels: L'Enfer de l'Ouest (2011)
Christopher Heyerdahl wasn't in the premiere of AMC's "Hell on Wheels," but his initial appearance in this Sunday's (November 13) episode provides the period Western with a much-needed jolt of menace and danger.   Heyerdahl's The Swede arrives in Hell on Wheels as the head of security to Colm Meaney's Doc Durant and instantly turns his attentions (with good reason) to Cullen Bohannan (Anson Mount), who he sees as fly in the ointment of the Union Pacific's forward progress. The Swede (who isn't actually Swedish) is scary, tortured by his Civil War experiences and also oddly hilarious, the latest in a...
