Fox Had the Jones Family and Republic Had the Higgins Family

Nine little programmers about the Higgins family were made between 1938 and 1941 and seven of them starred James and Lucille Gleason as the father and mother. The amusing situation in this one is that after they have announced they are going to South America, the family finds they can't afford to (after all, there is still a Depression) so they take to the road in the grandfather's trailer to deceive the townspeople. To their embarrassment, the ship they were supposed to travel on originally then burns at sea. There are screwball type motifs but some of the outdoor comedy is just slapstick. Nice support from Maude Eburne as a pesky neighbor and Hobart Cavanaugh as Gleason's bank colleague who tries to doctor the books to make it look like Gleason is a crook.
