Unwritten Code - A Different View of WW 2

WW 2 is viewed as a great victory of the US and its allies over the evil empire of Hiter and Japan. However, it is sometimes interesting to see the view from the loser's side of the equation in these circumstances. This film tries to accomplish that feat, and succeeds to varying degrees. A ship transporting German POWs is sunk by a U-Boat (o the irony), and three POW survivors make it to a rescue rowboat. What ensues is both introspective and tragic, and may or may not be believed or understood by members of the winning team. That result will be left to you, the viewer. Worth viewing.

    Escaped Nazis In America

A ship carrying POWs to America is torpedoed, and three men cling to a life raft: to pirsoners and an interpreter. Nazi Roland Varno kills the interpreter and pockets his papers, and when he wakes, lo! He's a Brit with a nice Trans-Atlantic accent. As he recuperates, he gets along with nurse Ann Savage, which doesn't please her boyfriend, Sergeant Tom Neal, but what can you do? Except that Varno goes around doing spy-like stuff.

It's the only directorial effort by dialogue director Herman Rotstein, and he does an adequate job on this Columbia B movie, aided by Burnett Guffey's camerawork and lighting. It's strictly B movie all the way through, but at 61 minutes, it doesn't have time to outstay its welcome. See if you can spot Blake Edwards.
