Carnaval d'amour

This film, released in the series of Johannes Heesters movies - probably to celebrate his 100th (!) birthday, which will take place late in 2003 - could have been so much better. God only knows what went wrong. Perhaps it's too ambitious - it really tries to look like an American big budget musical, where showstopper chases showstopper and big production numbers seem to have swallowed a lot of money. But the storyline is weak, and Dora Komar, who might have been pretty good on the big stage, is incredibly tiresome to watch. The film stumbles under its own weight, and you won't miss much if you fail to see it - save some really good songs. But there are better entries in the series.

Just to let know that Mrs. Dora Kommar died the 21th of November of 2006 in Lisbon, Portugal, surrounded by the love and care of her beloved sons. Let her soul rest in peace. This movie is one of the best examples of German classics and her performance is simply great. I really can't understand what want wrong and why. I never had the chance to speak with her about her career in the movies but I believe that at the time many European movies were just obfuscated by the shinny glamor of the great Hollywood masters even if, like this one, the quality was just the same and compared to some other productions, even better. One of the most important points is the quality of the singers and the perfection in the performance of the dancers. The scenarios are very well designed and very accurately selected to fit the black and white restrictions of that time.
